Aug 8, 2024
NREMT Exam FAQ Overview
1. How to Study for the NREMT Exam
Understand the exam content areas:
EMR Breakdown
EMT Breakdown
Advanced EMT Breakdown
Paramedic Breakdown
Focus on the five main sections:
Airway, Respiration, Ventilation
Cardiology and Resuscitation
Trauma
Medical
OB/GYN
EMS Operations (smallest section)
Majority of questions are on adults; minority on pediatrics.
2. Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)
EMR, EMT, and Paramedic exams are CAT exams:
The computer evaluates answers in real-time.
It stops based on 95% confidence of passing or failing.
For Advanced EMT, there's a fixed number of questions to answer.
Example outcomes:
EMT exam: Pass or fail at 70 to hundreds of questions.
Paramedic exam: Pass or fail at around 80 to hundreds of questions.
3. Exam Difficulty and Results Timing
The difficulty arises from uncertainty of passing/failing.
Results typically received within 24 to 48 hours.
Possible delays during weekends or holidays.
If passed, congratulations message; if failed, a scaled score indicating performance in five categories.
4. Study Strategy
Many students fail due to rushing into the exam.
Importance of having a proper study plan:
Use effective study tools and follow the plan systematically.
Assess knowledge regularly.
Avoid rushing in after failing; take at least 20 to 40 days to prepare with a new study plan.
5. Use of Practice Tests
Practice tests should not be the sole study strategy:
They assess current knowledge but might not strengthen weak content areas.
Effective studying involves reviewing content areas specified by NREMT and then using practice questions for assessment.
6. Post-Exam Feedback and Improvement
NREMT provides feedback based on performance:
Categories: Above Passing, Near Passing, Below Passing.
Scores range from 100 (lowest) to 1500 (highest); 950 is the passing standard.
Use feedback to focus studies on weak areas and reinforce strengths.
