[Music] hello my friends today i'm gonna be talking about disk partitioning and the differences between mbr and gpt disk partitioning allows you to separate one physical drive into multiple logical pieces this will help you organize your computer data and applications although it is quite useful to keep your data separated into multiple drives but obviously it is not necessary and for those of you who would like to have dual boot or even multi-boot systems partitioning would help you separate your operating systems into their designated drives separated from each other in a very simple explanation i would say disk is like a house and partitions are the rooms inside it keep in mind that commonly partitions are often referred to as volumes and finally there are two types of partition styles mpr and gpt that i'm gonna be talking about each in just a second mbr partition style or master boot record this style of partitioning is mostly used with old operating systems inside an mbr you can build two types of partitions primary partitions and extended partitions but first what is the primary partition a primary partition is in which an operating system can be installed and one mbr hard disk may contain a maximum of four primary partitions and any of the four primary partitions can be seen as an active partition you may wondering why do we actually need to set an active partition well here's the thing there can be times when four different operating systems are installed on all four primary partitions but one of the partitions that is marked as active is going to be used for the initial booting nvr comes with a limited maximum partition capacity which is 2 terabyte in addition to primary partitions there can also be an extended partition please note that there can only be one extended partition in a mbr hard disk style that single extended partition then can be subdivided into multiple logical partitions however these logical partitions inside an extended partition are not bootable for operating systems as you can see here the extended partition is bordered with dark green color and all logical drives inside it will be in bright blue color another disk partition style is gpt gpt is a modern partitioning standard that is gradually replacing mbr style it is called go it partition table because every partition on your drive will have a globally unique identifier windows operating systems allow up to 128 partitions on a gpt desk which is incredibly higher than mbr which was limited to only four partitions the question is how could i know what partition style is my desk for that open the desk management console right click on your disk and select properties then in properties select volumes and you will be able to see your disk partition style gpt has a mind blowing partition capacity which which can go up to nine point four zero bytes where one zeta byte is equal to one billion terabyte so here we're talking about nine billion terabyte partition capacity which at least for me that is unlimited capacity actually if you have a disc with gpt partition style then you should never be thinking about extended partitions or logical drives because you don't really need them anymore interesting to know that on a mbr disc the partitioning and boot data are stored in in one place if this data is overwritten or corrupted you are in a serious trouble gpt on the other hand stores multiple copies of this data across the disk so it is much more robust and you can recover if the data is corrupted the good news is that you can convert a mbr disk to a gpd style one of the ways you can accomplish this is prior to installing your operating system for that purpose go to your system bias and complete these two steps first select uefi as your boot mode and secondly disable secure boot and then install the operating system and yes you will have a task with gpt partition style [Music] you
