Body Cavities and Membranes

Introduction

  • Video focuses on simplifying body cavities and membranes.
  • Aim: By the end, understand a flow chart and table covering these topics.
  • Key Terms:
    • Body Cavity: Space or compartment in the body housing organs.

Main Body Cavities

1. Dorsal Cavity

  • Dorsal (Posterior): Back of the body.
  • Subdivided into:
    • Cranial Cavity:
      • Enclosed by the cranium (skull).
      • Houses the brain.
      • Contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
      • Lined by meninges (three layers: dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater).
    • Spinal Cavity (Vertebral Cavity):
      • Continuous with cranial cavity.
      • Enclosed by vertebral column.
      • Houses the spinal cord.
      • Contains CSF in subarachnoid space.

2. Ventral Cavity

  • Ventral (Anterior): Front of the body.
  • Subdivided into:
    • Thoracic Cavity:
      • Superior portion above the diaphragm.
      • Enclosed by rib cage, vertebral column, sternum.
      • Contains heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, great vessels.
      • Subdivisions:
        • Pleural Cavities (Right and Left):
          • Surround lungs.
          • Contain pleural fluid for lubrication.
          • Lined by pleura (visceral and parietal layers).
        • Mediastinum:
          • Middle portion; contains heart, thymus gland, great vessels.
          • Pericardial Cavity surrounds the heart, contains pericardial fluid.
    • Abdominopelvic Cavity:
      • Inferior portion below the diaphragm.
      • Subdivided into:
        • Abdominal Cavity:
          • Enclosed by rib cage, abdominal muscles, vertebral column.
          • Contains liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, intestines.
          • Lined by peritoneum (visceral and parietal layers).
          • Intraperitoneal organs: liver, stomach, spleen.
          • Retroperitoneal organs: kidneys, adrenal glands.
        • Pelvic Cavity:
          • Enclosed by pelvis and pelvic floor muscles.
          • Houses urinary bladder, reproductive organs.
          • Continuous with abdominal cavity.
          • Structures like bladder are subperitoneal.

Membranes and Fluids

  • Meninges: Protective layers around brain and spinal cord (cranial and spinal cavities).
  • Pleura: Double-layered membrane around lungs (thoracic cavity).
  • Pericardium: Double-layered membrane around heart (mediastinum).
  • Peritoneum: Double-layered membrane lining abdominal cavity.

Summary

  • The body cavities are structured to protect vital organs and allow for organ movement and function.
  • Understanding the subdivisions and membranes helps in comprehending the anatomy and functions of different systems in the body.
