Components of the Malpighian body:
Glomerulus
: Capillary network
Bowman's capsule
: Collects filtrate
Function: Filters blood to create filtrate, which then travels through the nephron
Structure of Malpighian Body
Glomerulus
Made of a network of blood capillaries
Increases surface area for filtration
Afferent and Efferent Arterioles
Afferent arteriole
: Brings blood into the glomerulus (wider)
Maintains high blood pressure
Efferent arteriole
: Takes blood away from the glomerulus (narrower)
Increases hydrostatic pressure, facilitating filtration
Filtration Process
High blood pressure from the afferent to efferent arteriole enables filtration
Two layers of filtration:
Endothelium
: Thin capillary lining
Podocytes
: Specialized cells in Bowman's capsule with slit openings
Sieve analogy
: Filtration similar to using a sieve to separate particles
