CCNA Lecture Notes: DTP and VTP Overview
May 22, 2025
Jeremy's IT Lab: CCNA Lecture Notes
Overview
Free, complete course for CCNA
Focus on two Cisco proprietary protocols: Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
Not on exam topics list (200-301) but still relevant
Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP)
Key Features
Cisco proprietary protocol
Allows switches to negotiate switchport status (access or trunk) automatically
Enabled by default on Cisco switches
Operational Modes
Dynamic Desirable:
Actively tries to form a trunk with other Cisco switches
Forms trunk with: Trunk, Dynamic Desirable, Dynamic Auto
Dynamic Auto:
Does not actively try to form a trunk; forms trunk if the other end is trying
Configuration
Manual Configuration Recommended
Disable DTP for security purposes
Use
SWITCHPORT NONEGOTIATE
to stop DTP frames
Trunk Encapsulation Negotiation
Supports dot1q and ISL via DTP
Default mode: negotiate
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP)
Key Features
Allows VLAN configuration on a central switch (server) syncing with other switches (clients)
Three versions: 1, 2, and 3
Three modes: Server, Client, Transparent
VTP Modes
Server Mode:
Default mode
Can add, modify, delete VLANs
Stores VLAN database in NVRAM
Increases revision number with changes
Client Mode:
Cannot modify VLANs
Syncs to server with the highest revision number
Transparent Mode:
Does not sync with server
Forwards advertisements but maintains an independent VLAN database
Configuration and Risks
Change domain name using
VTP DOMAIN
Risks with high revision numbers
Can overwrite VLANs if an old switch with higher revision number is introduced
VTP and DTP in Practice
DTP should be disabled for security
Misconfiguration leads to network issues
Quiz Strategies
Understand operational outcomes based on configurations
Know how to reset VTP revision number
Tools and Resources
Practice with Packet Tracer
Use flashcard decks (Anki)
Boson's ExSim practice exams

Conclusion
Understanding DTP and VTP is crucial, even if not explicitly on the exam.
Ensure you can configure and manage VLANs effectively using these protocols.
Use practice exams and labs to reinforce learning.
