Battle of Medan Area Summary

And the crazy thing is that when they said it was their area, anyone who approached would be shot and killed without hesitation. A total call to all youth to unite and take up arms against the enemy. H. Oh, it gives me goosebumps when I say it. [Music] Hey, guys, it's Nessie and welcome back to his storytelling Red JZ. where we discuss history, but it's just right that in August we're discussing Indonesian history, of course. So make sure you subscribe to this channel. We will always have the most history telling discussions. This season, Jaz Mera, we are discussing the most ferocious, craziest, and toughest battles for the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Starting with the episode of the Medan Area battle in 1945. So it turns out to be true, Guys, what was said that to achieve independence there was a difficult path that had to be taken by the fighters and the Indonesian people. Even after the declaration of independence what does that mean? So when World War II ended with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan's weak position at that time provided an opportunity for several countries to take advantage and declare their independence. One of them is our beloved republic. After Japan surrendered unconditionally on August 15, 1945, the Indonesian people enthusiastically declared that we were an independent country on August 17, 1945. But at that time, it was not only Japan that was stopping over in Indonesia . Many countries, including the Netherlands, which at that time also had one foot in Indonesia, refused to recognize Indonesia's independence. For the Dutch, Indonesia was still the Dutch East Indies . The colony is rightfully theirs. Even from the Dutch perspective at that time, Indonesian independence was either a Japanese trick or even a power vacuum that had to be filled immediately by another country. It suits them. If you remember in World War II, there were two sides in this world. The allies and the axis parties. The allies, including the Netherlands, through the NICA . When Japan lost, they said to the Japanese, "Hey, please maintain your status in Indonesia until the allied forces arrive. Don't hand over power to their new government . Just hold on for now, we will soon come to control Indonesia." Of course, this was contrary to the wishes of the Indonesian people who at that time had proclaimed that we were independent. Finally, when these allies arrived, the people certainly didn't just stay silent, Guys. The heroes and warriors all took up arms. They will not stop fighting for the independence they have just so painstakingly proclaimed. And when the allies returned, several very fierce battles broke out in cities in Indonesia. One of them is in the city of Medan. And this is what is known as the Battle of Medan Area. According to historical and social comparisons, the allied forces who were fighting Japan, the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union at that time planned to manage the former Japanese colonial territories. One of them is Indonesia. Well, the Netherlands was one of the allied blocs. They know that Indonesia has long been ruled by the Netherlands. So, the allies created the Afnik Allied Forces Netherland East Indies whose task was to accept the unconditional surrender of power from the Japanese army. Freeing Allied prisoners of war, disarming and returning Japanese troops to Japan, establishing and maintaining a state of peace, and creating order and security. and finally collecting information about war criminals to then be tried according to applicable law. But it turns out that secretly on August 24, 1945, Britain and the Netherlands also made an agreement called the Civil Affairs Agreement, the contents of which were that Britain would regulate the handover of Indonesia back to the Netherlands, especially regarding the Sumatra region, and civil government affairs would also be handed over to NICA, the Netherlands Civil Administration, a Dutch institution that was originally formed to restore Dutch colonial power in Indonesia. In simple terms, they would help the Dutch to ensure that Indonesia was a country under Dutch colonial rule . Well, in Indonesia itself, without knowing all of this, on August 27, 1945, the people of Medan finally heard the news that Indonesia had become independent, Guys, or proclaimed its independence. The news was immediately conveyed by the Governor of Sumatra at that time. And as soon as the news spread, the field was in an uproar. Ugh, it gives me goosebumps just talking about it. People came out of their houses cheering and started waving red and white flags along the streets. The atmosphere of emotion and euphoria was felt throughout the city. Finally the Republic of Indonesia has become independent. But the feeling of happiness did not last too long because on September 29, 1945, allied troops arrived in Jakarta. They came as afne. They said that their goal was what we discussed earlier. All good goals. helping to repatriate Japanese soldiers, helping to maintain order, tranquility, etc. But it turns out that the allies didn't come alone, guys. They also secretly came with NICA, aka Dutch marriage. The Indonesian people at that time were quite suspicious and also defensive. Why did you come and say you wanted to help us, but you brought the Dutch with you? which we know as one of the countries that colonized several of our regions for decades, even centuries, said Soekarno. News of the arrival of the allies and the Dutch also finally spread to Medan and as a precaution the Indonesian Youth Front or BPEI and the TKR People's Security Army Division were formed in Medan. 10 days later, on October 9, 1945, the allied leader Brigadier Theodor, Edward Dudley Kelly from England and his troops landed in Medan as part of the avne. When they arrived, the Indonesian government in North Sumatra welcomed them well because again, their official intentions were good. Returning Japan to its home, helping to restore order, creating a calm atmosphere, and so on, right? But without knowing, it turned out that Afne's party who came also came with the wedding. And it turns out they were in cahoots, Guys. Have hidden intentions in Medan. They want to regain power in North Sumatra. One day after they arrived, the Afne team visited the camps on Bryan Island, Pematang Siantar, Scientist, Rantau Prapat, and Berastagi to free the prisoners. They were then sent to Medan with the approval of Governor Muhammad Hasan. Well, but it turns out that when SAS AF came to the prisoners, they released them, Guys, not to be returned to the Netherlands or sent back to their respective homes. Instead, they were reintegrated into the Dutch East Indies army. Well, these hidden bad intentions were gradually discovered. Why does it seem like these people are dishonest and have no good heart? Until October 13, 1945, meaning only a few days later on Jalan Bali Medan there was a headquarters belonging to Nika in the Pension Wilhamin building. Well, there was a married soldier who suddenly left his base. He saw an Indonesian youth passing by wearing a red and white badge on his chest. And suddenly this soldier out of nowhere the incident happened so fast. Snatching the plan from the young man's clothes, throwing it and trampling it. The Indonesian people who passed by and witnessed this were all angry. How dare he trample on the symbol of pride of a nation that had just fought for its independence. Finally, it got rowdy, Guys, people clashed and there was a commotion between the Indonesian youth and the marriage troops. The situation quickly escalated into open fighting. The battle ultimately resulted in seven young men being killed, seven married women being killed, and 96 other married soldiers being injured. News of the battle spread, and tensions rose. And it's as if their cover has just been opened. Some allied soldiers no longer cared about the lies they carried. They began to lower the Indonesian flags displayed on government buildings. In retaliation, Indonesian youths stormed the buildings and tried to violently stop those who were trying to remove the Indonesian flag. The battle also grew bigger and spread to surrounding cities like Pematang Siantar and Nasi Tagih. And on October 15, 1945, an armed incident occurred in Pematang Siantar. Famous by the name of the Siantar Hotel Event. In front of the Galung weighing school which was guarded by youths, allied soldiers and also Nika carried out armed provocation. Meanwhile, TKR troops, laskar, and other fighters began to attack the allied and Dutch troops at the Siantar Hotel. Victims are starting to fall, Guys. 17 teas people and 27 people were taken prisoner from the allies and the Dutch. Meanwhile, from the Indonesian side, two people died. MD Raja Guguk and Ismail Situmorang and dozens of other people were injured. The situation is getting more heated, Guys. 3 days later on October 18, 1945, Brick Jen Kelly issued an ultimatum. an ultimatum in the form of a pamphlet distributed by the Allied forces. In the ultimatum it was written that they prohibited Indonesians or citizens from owning firearms. All firearms must be immediately surrendered to the British army. Well, was it ignored? Certainly not. Apart from donors, it is prohibited to arrange the smell of manipulation from 100 km. In fact, Kasman Singo Mejo from the TKR headquarters issued an announcement to mobilize the public in the Medan area and its surroundings. A total invitation to all youth, all people in Medan to unite and take up arms against the enemy. H Singo in the corner. At that time, Guys, the people flocked to the city of Medan to fulfill the call until fighting broke out again. The British troops began to be overwhelmed. Not only did they have difficulty controlling North Sumatra, but they were also opposed by a large number of people who were called to fight for the Republic of Indonesia. From the interior areas everyone came down and the battle continued. As time went on, the Allied forces became more and more aware that the power of the Indonesian people was massive. The gong on December 1, 1945, the Dutch and the allies put up a sign that read Fixed Boundaries Madon Area. They placed them in several corners on the outskirts of Medan city, which they believe is their area of power. acting unilaterally, Guys. Without saying anything, they were suddenly like, "Oh, this is our area, by the way." And the crazy thing is that when they say it's their territory, anyone who approaches or goes beyond their territory will be shot and killed without hesitation. And from that decision the term field area began to be widely known. The fixed boundaries of the Medan Area seem to have been created by them as their military bases . And at that point the Allies and the Dutch were acting like colonizers on the battlefield. They raided youth homes, confiscated weapons, and seized government buildings. Republican officials were expelled from their own offices. Villages outside the Medan area were also hit by terror. Are the people of Medan just keeping quiet? Certainly not. They fought back. The employees refused to leave the TKR office and the people's army surrounded the buildings that had been taken by force and saw the people ready to fight. The British soldiers panicked and shot indiscriminately. The youth and TKR are not afraid either, Guys. They are not silent. Instead, they approached and threw bottle grenades, causing a huge fire. This incident killed several British soldiers and someone from the Indonesian side was injured. The next morning, December 2, 1945, Allied troops carried out a large-scale raid on the youth concentration points . But that night it was the TKR and the troops' turn to retaliate. They attacked the barracks of the married and British soldiers. Until the soldiers couldn't sleep for 3 nights. On the 10th, the allies and the marriage launched a large-scale military operation. They tried to destroy the TKR's power in the Trapes Medan area and started calling the independence fighters extremists, terrorists, etc. The audacity. The people did not remain silent. The youth fight back. They even managed to kidnap a British officer of quite a high rank. And this incident made General Ted Kelly super angry. He again threatened the people of Medan to hand over their weapons. But this time with an ultimatum anyone who doesn't follow the rules will be shot dead. Amazingly, guys, the threat didn't stop the resistance. The fighters were determined that they would retake the city of Medan. Even with the simple weapons that the TKR youth and fighters had, they tried to formulate a plan. In the end, because they know that they are inferior, for example, if we compare their weapons. But they will not be defeated by their knowledge. They are the people of Medan. They will use the darkness of the night to move silently. They knew the ins and outs of their city and they were determined to totally conquer the invaders. And the strategy turned out to work. Since March 1946, the British troops could barely get out of the trapped city of Medan and the Indonesian troops continued to attack even though attack after attack began to push them back. By April 1946 the Allies had succeeded in taking over the city of Medan. The British army even forced the Indonesian government to leave Medan. Finally, the governor of the TKR division headquarters and the Mayor of the Republic of Indonesia were moved to Pematang Siantar. This fight, Guys, has been going on for months. Both sides attacked each other . By November 1, 1946, defenses in various areas of Medan had been strengthened. The Allies and Nika at that time tried to penetrate the defense line, but were unsuccessful because they were continuously blocked. Because they were furious, at 11.00 am the marriage troops burned down almost the entire orange village in the Padang Bulan area, Medan City. This caused the Indonesian people to suffer quite large losses. November 3rd at 10.00 am. As a result of the fighting that has been going on for months and is getting worse, there are plans for ceasefire negotiations. But at that time the Republic of Indonesia troops were on alert. They lined up behind the barricades that protected the city of Medan full of hope. But stay prepared if it turns out that the Dutch allies or the marriage party cannot be trusted again and stabs them in the back. The intention is good, right, to have a ceasefire after months of fighting, both sides need it. But the fighters' suspicions were right, Guys. At 0935 before the negotiations could begin, gunfire erupted. The fish troops in West Medan violated the ceasefire by firing machine guns from the direction of Jalan Binjai. And that's not the only one. Until the afternoon, violation after violation. So they just keep attacking up to seven times a day. Rifle shots, cannon booms, and other weapon explosions colored the sky of Medan city. On that day, five civilians and a people's lakska fighter fell as victims. And just like a frog that cannot be negotiated with, in the end the negotiations between Indonesia and the Netherlands regarding a ceasefire were never realized. Both parties are adamant about their respective positions, neither willing to give in. And because there was no agreement, the fighting flared up again. The ongoing gun battles in Indonesia at that time, not only in Medan, but also in other places, resulted in the loss of many lives. Until finally on February 12, 1947, through RRI Yogyakarta, the central government of the Republic of Indonesia announced an order to all corners of the country that starting February 15 at 00:00 all army, navy, air force, as well as all troops and fighting groups were to stop the shooting. And on February 15, 1947 at 00, the fighting in the Medan Area finally stopped. It was at that time that the Medan and Dutch parties held negotiations again to determine the boundaries of the area around Medan. March 10, 1947, negotiations continued and finally the boundary lines surrounding Medan City and the Medan Belawan corridor, the route connecting Medan City with Belawan Port, were determined. This is the moment that marked the end of the battle in Medan Area. On March 14, 1947, the installation of markers or boundary lines began to separate the territories under Indonesian and Dutch control. Even though the agreement still causes fights between the two parties. Until July 21, 1947, the Netherlands carried out another Dutch military aggression 1. This was followed by the second Dutch military aggression. And can you imagine, Guys, how long this battle lasted until finally the UN had to intervene and ask the Netherlands to stop. Until finally the Netherlands officially recognized the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia on December 27, 1949 during the Round Table Conference. a very long war and struggle until finally Indonesia's independence was truly recognized . So we can imagine what we had to fight for in Medan. And to commemorate the history of the Medan Area battle, a monument was built to mark the struggle, namely the Medan Area battle monument or the Apollo Monument. You can find the Apollo Monument on Jalan Somo or Jalan Veteran Medan. For those of you who want to pay to see the symbols of the struggle of the people's troops and the heroes who fought to defend Indonesia's independence. Apart from that, there is also the Trepes struggle monument in Kota Tengah Village, Medan. The monument is the building where the TKRB headquarters was located, which was eventually taken over by the Dutch, and it is said that there are several points in Medan as relics called Tatengger. Is it true that Tatenger said that? Please correct me below, Medan friends. These Tatengger are stones that contain inscriptions about certain events, such as the start of the battle, the number of victims, and so on, which are related to the Medan Area battle. And with our discussion today, Guys, hopefully this will be a very fitting reminder in August that the independence of the Republic of Indonesia that we feel today was not easy to obtain. Many lives were lost and our independence was born from the sacrifices and hard work of the fighters together with the people from 1945 to 1949. And hopefully it's not only us who are reminded, guys, as the people, but also the people up there. Those who sit in important government positions should be reminded that their positions carry an enormous responsibility. Not only for the people today, but also for the fighters who lost their lives defending the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Thank you to all of you. I hope you like this season. Allied troops, they said, Guys. Raining Maryam's fire on the city. Explosion after explosion forced the TKR troops to retreat to defend their positions. But that doesn't mean they gave up. Guess what? Try commenting below. [Music] MDA Raja Guguk and Ismail Simutor Siumang. Mda Rajo Mda Emda Raja Guguk and Ismail the Tumorang. Emda Raja Guguk and Ismail's names are really difficult.
