How to Crochet for Absolute Beginners

Materials Needed

• Yarn: Any basic yarn (100% acrylic recommended)
• Crochet Hook: Aluminum hooks (variety of sizes), using 5.5 mm for this session

Steps

1. Making a Slip Knot

1. Hold yarn with index finger pointing downwards.
2. Twist yarn upwards, and put thumb through loop.
3. Grab tail with index finger and thumb, pull through to create a loop.
4. Insert crochet hook and pull yarn to tighten.

2. Holding the Crochet Hook and Yarn

• Crochet Hook: Hold with thumb and fingers on the indent, like holding a knife.
• Yarn:
  • Hold yarn with fingers as if pointing.
  • Wrap yarn around pointer finger.
  • Grab work with middle finger and thumb.

3. Crocheting a Chain

1. Hold crochet hook facing away, twist hook away from you.
2. Put hook on left side of string, turning it towards you and a bit more to the left, then pull through the loop on the hook.
3. Repeat to create a chain.
