What Does It Mean When Your OneDrive Account is Frozen?

Reason for Account Freezing

  • An "account frozen" message appears if:
    • You have exceeded your storage allowance.
    • You haven't signed in for a long time.
  • Files remain accessible but require you to get back under your storage quota to regain access.
  • Changes to storage policies effective from February 1, 2023.

Getting Back Under Your Storage Quota

  • Delete Files or Buy More Storage
    • It can take up to 24 hours for changes to be applied.
    • If the account is still frozen after 48 hours, contact support.

In OneDrive

  • Sign in to Manage your OneDrive storage.
  • Tips:
    • Use the account that received the frozen message.
    • Personal & Family subscribers can increase storage by up to 1TB.

In Outlook.com

Reasons for Receiving a OneDrive Account Frozen Message

  • Possible additional Microsoft account (e.g., created with Samsung Gallery).
  • Sign in with other account credentials to unfreeze.
  • Recover account details if forgotten.

Consequences of Inaction

  • Exceeding Microsoft Storage

    • Cannot upload, edit, or sync new files on OneDrive; existing files are read-only.
    • Cannot send/receive email in Outlook.com or Microsoft Teams messages with attachments.
    • Potential deletion of OneDrive account and files after 12 months.
  • Exceeding Email Storage

    • Unable to send/receive emails in Outlook.com.
