Mindset Battle: Fixed vs Growth

Welcome to this match of legend! Today we have two strong opponents. To my left, Miss fixed. How would you describe Ms Fixed in two sentences ? Ms Fixed is convinced that she can learn new things but she doesn’t really want to change her level of intelligence. Her level in maths is B+ To my right, Miss Growth! Ms Growth thinks that no matter her level of intelligence, we can still increase it a little. Her level in maths is B+ as well. The crowd is unleashed ! This fight is gonna be epic… The two opponents have a similar level in maths and that’s fine because the next tests are maths tests. Come on, let’s go. Our two opponents are beginning their studies… Stop, it’s time for the 1st semester exams. According to you, who will get the best score in mathematics ? Miss Fixed, Miss Growth, or draw? Ms Growth gets the best score in math but it was tight? ! Without further ado, our two opponents are going back to training for the second round… Their coaches are there ! They are encouragning them : Ms fixed’s coach : « Come on Ms Fixed, you’re the best, you are gifted in math and you know it!! » Ms Growth’s coach : « Come on Ms Growth, you made a lot of efforts this year to pass this examand you’ve used good learning strategies, you’re gonna make it ! » And stop, it’s time for the second semester’s exams. Who will be the best in maths this time? Miss Fixed, Miss Growth or draw? Miss Growth again, incredible! two winning rounds in a row, eventhough they had a similar level in maths in the beginning. Will Ms Fixed invert the trend in the last round? And stop, It’s time for second semester exams. Who will get the best results in maths for this final round? Miss Fixed, Miss Growth or draw? Ms Growth again and again !!!!! This is madness? ! Really, I don’t get it. The two opponents had the same level in maths. They used the same learning techniques. Why such a surge of Ms Growth ? Let’s ask a kicklearning camp coach to better understand. Coach, explain us why Mrs Growth won the three rounds hands down? To begin with, we know today that our brain has the capacity to change its neuronal connections throughout its entire life, in other words, it has the capcity to constantly learn. This is what we call cerebral neuroplasticity. Ms Fixed and Ms Growth then both have the capacity to learn and progress in maths. Then why does Ms Growth seem to progress so quickly ? The explanation is simple but essential : everything comes from the mind, from the state of mind of the two opponents. Let’s first analyse Ms Fixed. How does she think? She's convinced that she can learn new things but she cannot change her level of intelligence. She has a "fixed" mind. She thinks that her level of intelligence is fixed. A priori, her success in maths depends on that level of intelligence that she can’t control. When she’s training and makes mistakes, she will tend to think « I’m making mistakes because I don’t have a good level in maths, I never had good skills in maths, I cannot do anything about it » On the other side, what does Ms Growth think? She thinks that no matter your level of intelligence, we can always increase it. She has a "dynamic" mindset. She thinks that her level of intelligence can increase. She controls what can make her learn and progress. She controls the level of effort she’s making. She controls the learning techniques she’s using. If she makes a mistake, she would rather tell herself, I made this mistake, it means that I can improve. Her brain is more active. It can sound unbelievable but this difference of mindset influence your ability and motivation to learn. But then, if we start with a fixed mindset can we change it later? Of course! Firstly, you don’t have a completely fixed or dynamic mindset. Your mindset often lies between the two. The good news is that this cursor can move at any moment. If you had a rather fixed mindset before watching this match but my explanations have convinced you, then your curso has already moved. You’re reassuring me coach! Practically, do you have techniques to develop my dynamic mindset ? Here are 3 techniques but formidably effective to develop your dynamic mindset : Make mistakes, Each learning mistake is a source of potential learning growth. Mistake is not an option. you need to make mistakes to learn. And above all you need to learn out of these mistakes. Your relation to mistakes has to change. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They are beneficial for learning if you analyse them you will get something out of them. Assign your success to what you can control. What can you control ? The hard work part. You control your efforts, for example your studying time, your studiousness in class etc. And the smart worker part. you control the learning strategies you use, for example memory retrieval techniques, or "segmented learning" Avoid assessing your success or your colleagues' success to an innate talent that you can't control. Consider yourself like a student throughout your whole life. The dynamic mindset is not all. You’ll need to study and use efficient learning techniques. You will surely select few disciplines which will interest you in order to increase your expertise. But developing a dynamic mindset your whole life, means giving yourself the possibility to learn It’s cultivating your curiosity. Your brain has the capacity to learn throughout its whole life. No matter of your age, you can learn new things and develop new skills. Thank you coach, a dynamic mindset it’s a must!
