Imagery in Literature

Hello! Today, we're going to talk about imagery. Imagery (and this is also in both poetry and prose) but imagery is the use of the description of things in a poem, of concrete things you can see smell, touch, taste, hear. That’s imagery. Sometimes imagery is just imagery. It’s describing a tree. It just wants to set the scene. Sometimes, images can also be symbols, because remember a symbol is a concrete image-- a concrete thing in a work that represents an abstraction. So, when we talk about imagery, we're just talking about the things that you can detect using your five senses in a poem or piece of prose. But, when we step to the next level--those things can just be by themselves—but, remember they can also represent something else abstract, then they also become symbols. Have a good day!
