[Music] [Applause] [Music] Hello and welcome to the 18th edition of Standards Watch, a show that is your gateway to the world of standardization. I am Ganjali, your host for this edition. Here's a special edition of Sanders Watch, bringing to you the entire gamut of standards which are in place in our households. But before that, let's look at this week's quick updates. [Music] To strengthen quality ecosystem and standardization initiatives, 25 BIS corners have been established in the libraries of various premier MOU institutions. The latest ones are set up at IIT Patna and NIT Patna which were inaugurated by DGBIS Shri Praud Kumar Diwari on 6th and 7th August respectively. As part of its ongoing efforts to foster a culture of standardization in academic institutions, BIS has installed 46 digital display boards across various partner institutions. These dynamic boards serve as information hubs. keeping both faculty and students updated on the latest developments from BIS, including the latest additions of the standards watch. Continuing its effort to nurture quality conscious professionals, BIS has established 195 student chapters in itsou partner academic institutions. The student chapters will contribute significantly to the standards formulation process by taking up pre-standardization studies on new work items and case studies on the existing standards. BIS successfully organized its first workshop for the mentors of BIS student chapters on 30th July 2025 at NITS NOA with enthusiastic participation from over 95 delegates representing 38 MOU partner institutions. The workshop gave practical insights into BIA student chapters and demonstrated the essential role of academia in shaping India's future on a standardsoriented framework. BIS organized a startup meet at IIT Ruri on 8th August 2025 to encourage and inform new businesses about the importance of quality and standardization. Similarly, another startup meet is being held on 11th August 2025 at Sri Sairam College of Engineering, Chennai. On the occasion of its foundation day, IIT Patna established a BIS corner and also inaugurated eight BIA student chapters in the August presence of Shri Praud Kumar Tiwari, Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards. This initiative was aimed to create a direct link with BIS and foster a culture of standards and quality practices among future technologists and innovators. The Rayur branch office of BIS organized a 2-day capacity building program on 6th and 7th August 2025 for the engineers of the public works department Chhattisgarh. The program was inaugurated by honorable deputy chief minister Shri Arun Sao with key officials. The Permanu branch office of BIS organized a one-day capacity building program in Shimla for the officers and staff of the state government health department. The program was aimed to raise awareness and train participants on the effective implementation of standardization, quality management and safety standards in the healthcare sector. A firstofits-kind 3D advertisement campaign was launched on 7th August 2025 in Japur to popularize the BIS care app among the general public. The objective of this initiative was to inform consumers about quality and standardization. BIS issued 99 all India first licenses in just 4 months between the period April 2024 to August 2025. New licenses have been granted for a wide range of products including agriculture irrigation equipment, copper rods and bars, medical textiles, aluminium hardeners among others. BIS is organizing a monthly quiz for the students ofou partner institutions. A recent quiz on the topic international electrotechnical commission and electrotechnical standards witnessed participation of 1,772 students. Sam Mika moanti of NIT Jamshapur won the first prize of rupees 15,000. BIS continues to organize manak mantan programs across its branch offices. One such instance is the manak mantan conducted by coyatur branch office on neem based pesticides on 30th July 2025 with the participation of around 176 attendees. Similarly Hyderabad branch office in collaboration with the Telangana state road transport corporation conducted manak mantan on public bus transport services and relevant guidelines. Bhopal, Jharkhand and Hana branch offices also hosted manak mantan programs on sanitary napkins, continuous hot tip steel bars and hexagon head bolts, screws and nuts respectively aimed at strengthening consumer awareness. As part of BIS internship scheme, the associated 122 interns submitted 125 pre-standardization reports and 171 papers on review of standards. BIS has identified 25 best reports which are currently under review by a committee for award and recognition. [Music] As I mentioned in the beginning, there exists an array of standards that ensures safety, reliability and sustainability of products all around us. Let's now take a closer look at the Indian standards that are shaping and safeguarding our lives. There are many standards which are in use and are relevant for our households. For the ease of understanding, we have broadly categorized them as standards for construction, renovation and interior decor, electrical appliances, furnishing and fittings, kitchen wear, sanitary fittings and water supply, medical appliances and personal care, women and child care, stationary items, sports goods and pet care. So let's detail out these standards as per the mentioned categories with our experts. BIS has formulated important standards to provide you a safe home. Some of them are IS-269 covers ordinary Portland cement. IS-2572 for solid and hollow block. IS-2095 specifies requirements for gypsum board. IS-428 for washable distemper. IS-15489 for plastic imulsion paints. IS-1562 for ceramic tiles. IS-1423 part1 for granite. IS-17953 for doors and window frames. IS-27 for granite steel strips and sheets. IS-1286 for plastic translucent sheets by BI certified products and build safe homes. Here is a quick glance at the Indian standards applicable to these products. IS-16102 part one covers the requirements for LED bulb. IS-2418 part 1 and two is for the tube lights. IS- 368 ensures safety of gizers. IS-14155 for washing machines. IS- 374 specifies the requirement related to ceiling fans. IS-LE 5 is for the table fans. IS- 3315 lays down the specifications for air coolers. IS-1391 part one is for the windows AC and part two is for the split AC. Similarly, IS-17550 specifies safety requirement for refrigerators. Electrical appliances like kettles, jugs, electric iron, toasters are also standardized by BIS. Beside this, IS-4250 ensures the safety of your food mixtures. IS-5790 safeguards cooking ovens. Plug and sockets are regulated by IS-1293 and IS- 3854 lays down the specification for switches. Similarly, wires, cables, and energy meters have also been regulated as per the Indian standards. Next time you buy an electrical appliance, check for the BIS quality mark. It's a small symbol, but goes a long way to ensure your safety. [Music] When we think of beautiful interiors, what usually comes to our mind is elegant furnishings, soothing colors, and creative decor. But behind this aesthetic appeal lies a framework of safety, quality and durability governed by Indian standards. Central to many of these furniture items are engineered wood products like plywood. IS-30 covers generalpurpose plywood. Moreover, BIS has developed standards for various other significant furnishings for your home such as IS-1038 for steel doors, windows, ventilators, and fixed lights made from roll steel sections. IS-2202 part one for flush door shutters. IS-17631 for work chairs. IS-17632 ensures the safety of chairs and stools. IS-17633 specifies standards for tables and desks. IS-17634 covers storage units. IS-17635 and IS-17636 cover beds and bunk beds. Talking about safety in interiors for fabrics and wall coverings. BIS has developed standards such as IS-1246 for handloom cotton curtain cloth varieties. IS-15741 sets the standards for ignition resistant curtains and drapes. Equally important to the performance of doors and windows are their hinges. IS-12817 for stainless steel butt hinges. IS-362 CERS to parliament hinges. IS-18297 for cabinet hinges. Door fittings that are an intrinsic part of your home like door closures, door handles, handles for motus lock and curtain rail systems have also been standardized by BIS. Similarly, IS-15418 specifies requirements for wall coverings including wallpapers, venile and plastic finishes. So next time you think about furnishing or installing fitting in your home, don't forget to look for the BI certification to ensure the safety and reliability of these products. [Music] Kitchen is the heart and soul of your home. Every Indian kitchen includes products like pressure cookers, stoves, gas cylinders, stainless steel utensils, aluminium cookware, water purifier, etc. But are you sure about the safety of these products? Have they been tested for quality and durability? To protect public health and ensure the safety of everyday kitchen wear, the Bureau of Indian Standards has developed several Indian standards. Let's explore some of these standards and understand their importance for consumers. IS-14756 for stainless steel utensils and for rot and cast aluminium utensils. IS-1660 ensures the safety of utensils. IS- 4246 lays down safety and performance norms for domestic LPG gas stores. IS-17613 ensures safe and reliable use of aluminium gas cylinders. Domestic pressure cookers are regulated by IS-2347. Similarly, IS-17526 for stainless steel vacuum flasks and bottles and IS-17803 for portable water bottle non-insulated type. The standardization of casserols is regulated as per IS-17569. For spoons, IS-16286 and forks IS-16218 are regulated by Indian standards. On the other hand, for water purifiers, IS-16240 and IS-14724 ensures the safety, construction and performance of ARO and UV based water purifiers respectively. IS-1676 details electrical safety for domestic microwave ovens. Packaging of food is also important. Hence aluminum foil for food packaging is covered under IS-15392 aluminum foil for food packaging. For solar cooking devices, the standardization has also been carried out. Besides, IS-13983 has been developed for stainless steel sinks, ensuring kitchen sinks are durable, corrosion resistant and easy to install. So, BIS certified products help you make your kitchen safe and secure for your loved ones. [Music] Whether it's clean water for drinking, a proper bathroom setup, or drainage in our homes or offices, plumbing is something we all depend upon. But are the pipes and sanitary fittings we use actually safe? Are they tested for quality and durability? That's where BIS plays a crucial role. Let's look at some of the important Indian standards developed for toilets, wash basins, urinal, sinks to be strong and hygienic. There are standards such as IS-2556 part2 for western style water closets, IS-2556 part 3 for Indian style water closets, IS-7231 for flushing systems. These standards ensure the products can withstand heavy use, resist stains and chemicals and remain hygienic for years. Pipes and fittings are the veins of any water system. Now let's have a look at standards for plumbing and water supply. IS-1239 part1 covers galvanized iron GI pipes commonly used in internal plumbing and outdoor water lines. IS-4984 for HDP pipes strong, flexible and corrosion resistant. IS-4985 for PVC pipes, lightweight and easy to install. IS-15778 for CPVC pipes, ideal for hot water lines. IS-15450 for multi-layer composite pipes used in modern high-rise buildings. IS-12701 for plastic overhead water storage tanks ensures they are safe and leak proof. And don't forget IS-779, the standard for domestic water meters, ensuring accurate and reliable measurement of your household water uses. Even appliances that use water are covered under BIS standards. So now we can say choosing ISIM mark products ensures safety reliability and long-term performance. Safe water, clean sanitation, trusted standards. [Music] We all use medical devices at home like we use clinical thermometer for checking the fever, glucometer for measuring the blood sugar level if we have diabetes, spagnometer or in other words the blood pressure machine for measuring the blood pressure level and so on. Homeused medical devices make it easier to monitor and manage our health conditions. Using a substandard medical device can lead to misdiagnosis and thereby wrong treatment. But don't worry, standards have been laid down by BS for home use medical devices which address the aspects of safety, performance and usability. Indian standards like IS-305 for clinical thermometer, ISIC 800601 part 2 section 30 for blood pressure monitoring machine, ISIS 80601 part 2 section 61 for pulse oxyter specify various mechanical and electrical safety requirements. These standards also specify performance requirements which are crucial for the device for correct and reputable results. Besides this, BIS has also formulated standards for personal care products such as toothpaste, shaving cream, after shave lotion, surgical face masks, footwear and hell bits. So next time always check the products for compliance to the Indian standards. [Music] From the soaps you use everyday to the baby products for your little ones, quality matters because when it comes to self-care and your child's well-being, there should be no compromise. BIS ensures that personal hygiene and child wellness products meet the highest benchmarks of safety and performance. BIS has an array of standards in the category of personal care such as sanitary napkin, soaps. If we talk about cosmetics, BIS has also formulated standards like skin care and powder, lipstick, kajel, nail polish, hina, liquid bindis for child care. Wellness begins with nutrition, hygiene and safety. So let us now have a look at some important standards in this category. baby diaper, feeding bottles, toys, skin powders for infants, hair shampoo, cereal based complimentary food. So remember to always look for BIS quality mark whenever you buy any personal and child care product. [Music] From academics and promotional settings to artistic endeavors, stationary items serve as essential tools. Standardizing these items is crucial for quality, consistency and safety of these products. Did you know that some quality benchmarks have been set up by BIS for stationary items? Let us explore them together. IS-989 for scissors. IS-5348 to ensure safety while using staples. IS-642 and IS-6421 for single and double hole paper perforators. For file fastener, IS-7671 lays down the quality parameters. IS-1848 part one and two for writing and printing paper. IS-1490 for photocopy paper. IS-1276 for printing paper for computer printers. IS-257 covers paper adives, liquid gum, and office paste. and IS-1028 for school bags. Quality stationary begins with standards. [Music] Whether it's a Kashmir villow cricket bat or a precision engineered javelin, every piece of sports equipment plays a vital role in ensuring performance, protection and trust. But what ensures these products meet global quality benchmarks? The answer lies in Indian standards. BIS has published over 50 standards for sports goods covering everything from design and safety to durability and performance. Here are just a few of them. IS-828 part one for cricket bats used with leather ball. IS- 417 part one for footballs covering material and construction. IS- 415 for shuttle ensuring flight and balance. IS- 417 part 3 for basketballs ensuring size, bounce and resilience. IS-3785 wicket keeping gloves for safety and comfort. IS-3800 batting gloves for protection during impact. IS-3923 leg guards for batsmen and wicket keepers. IS-17800 for tennis rackets covering frame properties and string tension. IS-11974 are metallic badminton racket frames designed for precision and strength. IS- 3345 sports nets for badminton and tennis. These standards are more than just technical documents. They are the backbone of every sporting moment, helping athletes perform at their best safely and consistently. [Music] When it comes to your pet's health, there should be no room for compromise. From the food they eat to the accessories they use, every product should reflect the love and the care they deserve. That's why BIS ensures quality and safety through Indian standards tailored for pet care items. Let's discover some of them together. IS-11968 covers the quality parameters for pet foods for dogs and cats. Also to safeguard the health of the livestock like cattle, poultry, pigs etc. BIS has formulated Indian standards like IS-2052 for compounded feeds for cattle. IS-1374 for poultry feeds and IS-7472 covers the pig feeds. IS-16150 part one for fish cow feed while part two covers the fish catfish feed and IS- 2154 covers the coconut oil cake as livestock feed ingredient.
