you now clubing clubbing buts need to bring what you me my age I'm 52 no but Every Time in the World Cup you were just back at the hotel food you were I wasn't no he was there but he just doesn't there but he doesn't drink he don't drink he just I just can't imagine you clubing Gary can I Club pre seasion if we're bringing a preseason I still love pre-season every preseason I've come back six7 pound overweight I used to take the bike in the steam the day before we were back in the sh W George Graham had to go back for his daughter's wedding and he said no one out he left and I'm not joking by half night we were out paragliding I cannot imagine you paraglider you know about highlights on your career that's probably up there with the highlights of my career the ball's coming me and night going for the tackle put him out he out for eight weeks Steve mcan's on the pH yeah I'm just a bit worried about your preseason I was like offended that he would ring me like could have pull me to training Steve don't you worry about me I'll be ready for them games you worry about that welcome to stick to football brought to you by Sky and this week's episode is all about pre-season how hard it was how much we enjoyed it how much we didn't enjoy some of the great stories of preseason trips preseason tours and also how important it was for preparing you for a start of a new [Music] season well that's the episode this week right let's do it then pre-season m it's like you read the brid we're in pre-season no preseason was great like for night out when youed to go out we used to get one big night out on a tour in pre-season oh probably was was it Singapore was it Singapore was a great night great that was when you didn't turn up at the function I never forget Sweden covered for you the best Sweden's the best not turning up hold on a second Gary I hate we just stuff out there I I I didn't turn up for a function so what happened we went to the most famous bar in the world is the Long Bar in raffles in Singapore yeah and they throw the nuts on the floor they uh they crack the nuts they been it no no and you throw the and basically we went out in the afternoon and they do these yards of Ale yeah and we were on these yards of Ale look it up on honestly amazing is it one with the Bott the bottom yeah and um we had a few but then we had to be back for seven till like 9 and then we could go out again after and there was there was a bridge of s till 9 where we had to go to this event where's Keen he didn't come back I I thought I got back for it no I don't think so no I think I did get honestly I think I got back for did you do a yard I think I'd wanted to yeah I think I got back for some of the function I was a bit late don't think you quite made it did I not make it but I my intentions were there you know I mean I was going to try and get back oh well that's all right was I the only one who didn't make it back yeah what was the function yeah it was a it was a sponsor function it was a sponsor function that we had it was sponsor midle our day off so we were allowed one night out and on this day we had this charity function and then the day after we actually went remember that guy's house we went to with that was weird them little vodka jelly things he was jumping in the pool remember a couple of day remember the director magine director yeah was you in Seattle when um you went to the guy's house who everyone was made the glass no who put glass anywhere in it's like this glass guy who does everything from glass he made his a Premier League trophy and the ga tooker so he obviously we all have to go he made this Premier League trophy so as he's walked in he's got it he's dropped it no way shattered everywhere for the funniest thing none of us wanted to be there we' be dragged there but it's horrible you get dragged everywhere isn't it yes yeah but that's what preseason is about as well remember it's about like you going going there PR stuff and them when you a kid I loved it my first ever preseason tour was to Asia and it was to qual lumpo for two weeks remember next to Hard Rock Cafe You' have been there yeah and there was like a Brian Adams tribute act playing like every other night and we used to go in I thought it was one of the best the gaffa didn't go for some reason that's why he was so good yeah kiddo took us yeah well he didn't miss the whole trip though did he cuz sometimes he'd come out cuz when we went to South Africa remember my he came out a few days late he'd obviously be doing deals or whatever um but yeah I did help it thought us had all these trips I was at South Shields Beach to run it like sing to be fair we used to do that You' played local games as well the game has change over the last 50 we' played like games in Ireland local games obviously and that was great as well did you have to do really hard like training pre-season like runs I us to dread it I used to dread it my brother-in-law was in Portugal playing golf he sent me a picture oh I was running around the golf course have you seen it I've seen it in that Lobo yeah this week yeah that was so look there's there we all I look and then if you go right to the back he's right at the back right back he is let me see has to be at the back like sheering everybody let see R front Rio yeah Rio was a proper who who was at front the back there that was when Kos Kos came in that was Kos Kos came in and we used to have to go out and do a a 630 or 7:00 run in the morning for like I don't know' been about half an hour 45 minutes come back have breakfast and then we do training football training and then we do strength in the afternoon that was one of the hardest preseason that that was tough and that was a start of my little Fallout with people over yeah it was wasn't it that was where you I used I used to hate preseason I used to drive well running and stuff yeah what did you know I I needed it need know i' come back every pcon i' come back six seven pound over waight and so I knew that I had to put the work in to be did you do anything during the preseason like when the season finished enough W way I never no didn't didn't do anything no and you need CU you never had that long rest they tournament with England and stuff you had two three weeks off the reckon players are coming back almost too fit now but there's nowhere to go with them you know especially if clubs get you back you four weeks five weeks Lads are pretty fit now they're going to do them campel that they're in Dubai on holiday they see them doing the running and all lot of that's for the social media but I didn't like when we went to Port gum I didn't like when the families got involved you know when clubs are I know there was an issue because there was players only had two weeks off I kind of get it but I didn't like when they started bringing family situations into the football side of it that was one of the issues I had that was my first preseason with United um is that right were the families involved and the the families there yeah but that's where I had the hassle with Kos and fuson must be difficult it's difficult you know I could totally get when you know when the boxers don't want the family around I get it I totally get it because like the preseason for me it was the place to go so as I can just be that other person to just get fit righty I I agree I wasn't one for I must I wasn't one for bringing families on preseason to that was was your time to work you've been with them for a month on holiday that you say about the the current players I went over to interview um Marcus rashford Last Summer in Portugal and he was over there but I saw about seven or eight Premier League players literally training over like like top top Premier League players like some the best in the league you Dean rice Phil folden Lads like that they're over there doing a week or two of training in this amazing little camp and gym and they're on they're on the pitch in the afternoon doing the sort of doing their own thing you mean well Fitness work in the morning and in the afternoon they do the football work technical work working on stuff with your teams are you on they're on holiday holiday with coaches like with personal coaches and I was like I thought I admired it quite a lot cuz I carried on go I did train during the summer I did carry on I didn't done Road I've done some Road running and that I would literally to do that Rocky kind of I I had I had 10 days off I had four weeks off every summer I had 10 days off and then I would do Monday Wednesday Friday I would do sessions to keep myself just there I could I us take the bike in the steam the day before we back in bike what bike in the Steam for one day before we back in for one day I'm not not eat the sh not eating until we how how long would you honestly seriously how long would you feel you have to stay in there because to sweat all that out to think that as honestly the night before we go in to get weighed i' sitting there for 90 minutes what fully clothed fully clothed I wouldn't eat a thing I wouldn't drink a thing go in I'd be like struggling to get in the build like so when did it kick in when did it kick in for you then in respects of right got get myself sharp and when I was back in when you that's what I used me training for yeah I was a bit like that I agree with when though like after tournaments I remember going to 2019 World Cup Phil was in charge we played seven games I played all seven games I think I R 7 25k I got 10 days off after the tournament went in with City the managers had 10 weeks completely off and I remember sitting down first day was Fitness testing and he's like we want to win the Champions League the FA Cup the league I literally cried that day honestly I got home I cried mentally and physically I was just they didn't give you extra time off no no extra time nothing it didn't go off how much you played not I was so I've never been so you change anything way in the way you you feel like you prepared in preseason cuz it didn't seem affect no because I always felt like I was throughout the season I was it last got in I was fifth I could I could run I could yeah so the rest is more important sometimes for me it was the mental side of feeling like I've got through the sessions what they're doing this is why when Wenger came like the Bruce R would do a session where you run right around Co in it's probably like 4 and a half kilometers and you have to run around that couple of times and then you feel right we're going to do three of these and then we're going to then you do you do you do three and then he says right you got to do another one now the last one and no one comes in in front of the in front of the goalkeepers so you know Alan it was Alan Miller and Dave Seaman at the time and no one's going to tell Dave Seaman to run any faster and you know what it's like when you have to run slow when you're not that person because when you're in preseason you have to be you're either at the front the middle or or the back and that and you You' got your own Tempo I cannot run that slow I I can't run that slow it was a nightmare and that was what I didn't like about the preseason where it turned into can you do it if you don't do it are you letting the team down and that no we've just done four you know what I mean you're going to do another one just to prove a point you know what I mean it it was back then all right it was a test of could they break you sometimes the coaches I think even our youth team coach we had players being sick in the youth team definitely our you team coach it was definitely a test of your character it wasn't just about this is why when Wenger came to the point I remember Wenger came and we we honestly it was crazy we had the balls on the first day just passing the balls around done a couple of Hoops stuff some stretching and then he went finished we was like what and that was for the whole preseason done a couple of things more couple of things that was a little bit more more professional them days anyway you want yeah but the thing is obviously we started we we changed totally but I I did miss the hitting the brick W five like yes I can get through this because that's what you do you think like ble test did you like the ble oh the bleed test I think what was my best 132 or something I used I used to drop out da all the time the next time you do it you need to do better I remember I like your tactics yeah I remember keep was to keep his come out know I remember Steve C the first time I done a bleep test you get the first time the first time I done a bleep test it was at Palace with Steve copper and Steve copper was very fit and Steve coupple wouldn't come out he he'd come out in and around 13 so you know you have to stay there at least but then you'd see and he'd say no one comes out before me and then bam the Terminator know that's how we used to speak sleep CLE no one comes out before me but then his his thing was he wants to see who as soon as he gives them the okay drops out straight away was amazing beex used to go to the he completed y yeah unbel we were still doing the bleep test at everon when I went back with kumman like on a regular once a week I reot of Club still use it once a week yes good the Beep Test I bumped into a couple of girls I played at Sunderland with literally a couple of weeks ago cuz we had this run down South shs Beach in sundland it was like 24 minutes and I said to them I was like can you remember that preseason run and I wasn't very good at kicking the ball but I could run so I was always at the front and they said that they used to stop halfway wait for me to go all the way around and then count to a minute and just leg it across the field to so they were doing 10 minutes and I was doing 24 and I never knew to this day that half of them were chea look you the jungle I couldn't kick a ball but good [Music] one Mo's preons were tough yeah we used to go to Austria and me first one I was 16 went out there and then you get up at like 6 6 in the morning do the run yeah do the session but Mo was so intense with it and remember Tommy graison and Lee Hasley had the head shave so I was 16 so I do anything to terms with he bck me head but it was like 100° so this be first ever preseason so then in the end I had to cut one of the bed sheets up and make a bandana so I'm going out I'm going out to tra as a 16y old a Big Ben with the whole Ben que sa was it did you find the preseason tough yeah and what about the the games with the games how did you the games I used to want to play F used to always play me in all the games not where he rest players and yeah cuz he knew that I needed three or four games to get do you know what I think must be hard for players now when they go they come back preseason they obviously go to the States now and they end up playing The Real Madrid in the first few games Liverpool again play each other I always like four five against like lower league yeah I think it's you're almost straight into it I think it's the traveling now because we we used to do it after tournament year we wouldn't go to like the state or to Asia you'd have a break the International Players would get a break we get a break and need send to do the plays we being away but because obviously commercially and money was you literally come off the back of the tournament straight into another 3 we that that happened the first year that happen so we we would always get four weeks he was strict on four weeks I got a call I think it was in Malta and he said o it's free with United yeah got no Li me Beck Phil schy we were told we had to come out to America all the sponsors were kicking off in America about basically not having you mean needed vex vex needs company on the flight come on [Laughter] J I thought we were trying to make us less humble yeah this is where I get the complex in the Gage up with L patan bags what you doing serious he called us out literally after two and a half weeks and that's when from then on in you had to go back whenever it was oh you know what about your approach to the actual games as a as a forward it's the only time I can look back um as a forward and I wasn't bothered about scoring and and I was I was more worried about the link and the touch and this is where I had a massive argument with with riok because he didn't realize that this is how I'm building into the season to try and you don't want to be scoring five six goals in games against would you be worried if you hadn't scored for three or four games one bit not in preseason I would worry if I was making in preseason I'd be wor but this is what I didn't want to do I wanted to make sure that the the sharpness of that come because I was quite confident that you know you slip into Striker mode when it starts to happen and for him to dig me out for thinking like oh you're not taking it seriously to finishing I'm I'm trying to get fit I'm trying to be sharp we were playing at what St Orbin I think it was or or borm wood and I was just doing that stuff and I said this is how I do my preseason you must been getting chances them games you must have been scoring thing about it is yeah but you're scoring but it's not like the main thing on my mind to do that but it's the main thing was to try and get the the touch and the sharp and then that's what I was more involved with that's what I wanted to do we with van in the state honestly it was like every game was FA Final is that right yeah took it really seriously on it and then for the forwards if you're the penalty taker if you miss you're the back to que Jesus and then even in preseason if you took you if you miss a penalty I like that you go to like number seven or eight in the Q we got three penalties preseason the scored the first two the last game before we played sevill at Al stord I've hit the post so the first game of the season I was like number eight pen Phil Jones went into the game as the penal taker you've got me and Van persy oh my God pre season win but for Strikers it must be different for like we could even you could settle back and you know Defenders could settle back in Midfield you could but I think the strikers obviously is about sharpness isn't there some Strikers now there some Strikers it's all about scoring in preseason so they can go into the season scoring a bit of confidence maybe yeah that's what it is that's what it but we definitely had a few games so when they even when we started your first League game I still T took me six seven games to get up to speed did you not feel that it took me a lot of games to proper I think once you get into September you start of course yeah I think as a stri it's easier for a striker because for you guys I think it's hand of for Striker no because no you scored a couple of goals sharp sharpness yeah but if you scoring a couple of goals just you just feel like yeah I'm just in that FL there's one thing worse than preseason that is missing preseason you miss preas oh my God back catching I missed two or three towards the end and I never got back anywhere it's weird isn't it it's horrible you miss it oh my God you felt you feel like you're not part of the group yeah what were you like as a manager for preseason did you run them or not cuz I wonder like old school where they just running for the sake yeah like what right said everyone was with the B first day the balls were out but I used to do it differently in terms of what you said they do the football in the morning yeah and then the gym in the afternoon i' do the gym first in the morning and then do the football in the afternoon because I always think once you've done the football and then you think I've got the gym in the afternoon mentally so I flipped in on the gym stuff first got the football to look forward to in the afternoon so I don't know why he was just thought to be yeah again yeah but you say that it's like again with with um with George Graham Bruce R can even they the balls was last and it's what you want you want to feel the ball and like we do days without balls in the youth team I think you know it's almost like they're saying oh we want you to look forward to the ball but the ball is what it's about like when we started to have it with didn't make any difference we were fine with it yeah I that when you're fatigued and you're going out down like you say you join the gym in the morning you B fatigu you still as a coach you still want to see the sharpness I'd rather to be tired and not sharp doing the weights yeah you know what I mean I'd rather to see the sharpness in the football and then they're coming up in the afternoon going all right let's just get through it you know what I think that's for the first couple of weeks and then when you actually take that away from them you take the gym bit away from them and they're doing the football first then you see a massive difference in them do you think there's injuries involved why I would always do the football first because I if you're going to do the football second and that when you're you're tired anyway you're you're already fatigued then you're going to try and be sharp in a game if you think about itj 22 players are all at different levels of Fitness on day one that all of different types of Fitness they're all different players in different positions who rely upon different like a striker runs maybe 9 10K whereas a field and might run 13k they should all be doing I mean it's mad when you think we all did the same preseason yeah is that bringing the team together it is but like you can see why some get injured you know what I mean you wouldn't do the same in any other sport you wouldn't do the same preseason if it's an individual sport I think G 39 at Derby so you basically you've got to he has to be completely separate to you would manage your lord and each week one year definitely but I remember even when we would go can you remember when the warm-up started in the gym did you do warm-ups in the gym so we used to warm up in the gym then go on the pitch warm up and I remember timeing once it was 54 minutes and hadn't touched the ball and this was in season whereas as soon as you get out and you do the Rond doors the boxers I think the session's just so much faster yeah maybe yeah but there so session so much warm-ups but I do think in preseason when you say about Lorden and stuff like that I think you do have to like maybe do the football in the afternoon because you have to like when you say about injuries like break them a little bit sometimes with the younger players now they go oh they've done too much loading in pre-season but if they don't go through that then they're not going to get through the season it's like oh play them 60 minutes 50 minutes I went I went to the when I went to the MLS I done three the team were in La so I went out and I done three days running it was like 100° my face is like P rout and I could barely walk doing these runs could barely walk I remember walking down the street and think think what am I doing but then that was the same and like literally in agony and because I was there at the time on my own I loved it cuz I was going back to having a sleep in the afternoon yeah yeah and stuff and that was like the big best thing for me was preseason was having a sleep in the how old was you then 31 maybe how did so did you feel like when you was there with them as well being the MLS and it's Wayne Rooney coming did you feel that pressure of having to make sure that I got show them a certain level of not really preparation myself but I always thought the um obviously they're looking at you but just do me normal thing that's what I feel not time be the amount of players you obviously with your lad being over there yeah the amount of players who come over and they're completely separate to the team getting to getting their Fitness levels up you mean yeah but everything like even the flying F like sat in first class where the rest of the team that's fuing some of the players obviously all up TP players what so you be satting first class and the rest of the so do the offer me I said no I sit with the players and honestly the first flight I was sat there got two random people next to me what have I done here just I'm TI to like stay humble and be te players some players would be business class first class and some economy yeah why that's not good for team spirit at all just Chang that after a week no didn't to be fair but the travel L was horrible but a lot a lot of the players de like and I'm sure Beck did the players have a problem with that they just got them I love the American Lads do you you understand the American Lads to be fair get to see bad over there pretty poorly imagine you being in economy and Teddy shoving them in business class no problem no problem J whatever you would not sit in the economy of course I would Jesus I don't know who um if if I had to like my like the Arsenal te I don't know if any of them would would do that they wouldn't sit there and the rest of the lads are down there I can't even understand why they in a team did T do it J did he do that tiry I'm talking about my I know one player that definitely wouldn't have Dennis burkham well yeah Dennis flying the non-flying Dutchman what was your preseason like Roy manager did what did you have did you have influence or did you leave it to your coach oh yeah of course you would a bit of input but obviously you staff around you the fitness coaches to look after it yeah all bit what we've been discussing pretty straightforward little trips to Portugal then you'd have a training camp over there so yeah all the pretty the normal stuff and then you're on about results then you you might get bugged down by results preseason you're thinking we're not looking sharp like you said the other day before the warm-up United look sharp and the warm up and you're worried No you're constantly worried about our Lads looking fit I think the one I remember we done Portugal one time you we did training camp we took the players down the beach and you know I trying to mix things up and we had them running up on the beach and I was like it was great then getting the sea Lads have a swim I thought yeah listen we're we're ahead of everybody here you know what I mean nobody's doing this physio came to see me the next morning but about seven or eight of the players are proper feeling there like Achilles from running on the sand obviously that's clever is it yeah bit of a rest here today L yeah no problem just but yeah just the normal stuff and I put one of my players I night arish like most honest player ever met brilliant attitude run through brick wall um so in the preseason where said Jags have to pull Jags out to the 11v 11 we didn't have enough players so I joined in oh the ball's coming me and night got for the tackle put him out he was out for eight weeks Jesus what did you do it was just a tackle like a block tackle but obviously it kind of Jar him he his ankle he was out for eight weeks oh my oh my you can't join him you no you can't join him yeah I haven't I know but it's tempting when you're so young obviously I joined in a little bit with England you and there was a player of dropped out during the session I've done it I've done it yeah I don't know how you couldn't though if there was just a bid there opportunity the box is not so bad but I think when there's 11v 11 or 88 whatever might be going on you you can't get you have to get a young kid involved or play with the extra man you the preseason tours I didn't mind because it was all United have done that for 30 40 years before I think we joined I something maybe we Sol for this I don't get the week in Portugal or the week in Spain or the week yeah I'm witch I don't get it honestly I think actually they've just been away fourward on holiday they've probably done the preseason pre- preseason program where they've done a bit of running now actually having them in the training ground where you've got everything 100% you got training around with gyms or with like and go back to their own beds Gary go back to their own beds after pushing themselves I agree with you I I think that is particularly for clubs who maybe can't afford it they're spending fortunes to go to these training camps may maybe it's just obviously to get the lads around each other together a relax M mentally to go in I I always felt mentally to go into the training ground every day and two or three weeks it's only a couple of weeks do you think no well you preseason five or six weeks no but is that too long do we I look at I look at teams come back and to get get back really early but I think it's like a it but I look at Players if you came back from an injury and um and someone said you've got six weeks to get fit so players have what I'm saying is why why why are teams coming back so early why why would you need five six weeks to get fit off the manager as well in it to work tactically and but Roy so this I don't know whether I don't know whether uh Burnley Vincent would do the same again but I went to interview him what's the exact date that I went to interview Vincent company last year end of May so they they finished obviously Championship finishes early early May and they I think they' actually won the league like in April so almost like they give their players like a couple of weeks off before the end of the season even then think brought them back they had two preseason so they came back in I think for two three week and then they had another two weeks off and then they brought him back in for another and and to be fair I thought the that's so or fourth they were in they were in weren't they now you think got pre fourth of June they were in the players were in so if you think about it players come back usually first week in July s of July the fourth of June they were in for two weeks two or three weeks it was too long to have eight weeks off and I looked at the time thought that's interesting I wonder I wonder whether we'd do the same thing again now in terms of that how long you get back before your first game that's that's the bit I'm looking at so you get back you with the game Lads in six weeks but if you just come back from an injury on the back of having two or three weeks off and someone said you need five or six weeks to get fit you go I'll be especially the modern players they are proper profession go I need weeks of training yeah I know you have to some you're taking boxes you got to get Lads back you want to be seen to be doing the right thing and playing games but for me to get these modern players back where you go our our first proper League game is in five six weeks that that's a long time especially if you've been bringing it back for a week or two it's not just about that first game though is it like I think pep does it so well that his team seem to hit momentum straight after Christmas but there's a foundation to a lot of these Lads anyway I think there's a foundation to their Fitness where you go these these Lads are proper when they're off eating properly sleeping properly so when they come back you don't need a fitness coach go like whes on I'd let myself go you would go Lads i' probably do need four or five weeks to get hey get back up really what you looking at now when you look at the levels of what you've got to do now what um the amount of points to actually win it when you're looking at how pep will probably prepare our klopp will prepare Mikel when saying about mikel's like in preseason he's like that is because of the levels that they've got to get to so straight from the straight from off the straight off the bat with preseason you you've got you got to be getting that right because you have to start the season winning and you have to be winning yeah you know what I mean it's like I don't I can't because like I didn't even start thinking of anything until you're getting towards Christmas that getting involved in anything I just wanted to play well score the goals keep yourself involved but now these players but these modern players would a lot of them the top LS would have chefs you're right A lot of them so if these boys are fueling up properly remember go come back to our day when you played you weren't really eatting you might eat something decent at the training ground but then you've got especially young sing Lads listen you eatting robish you be having your a few PS you remember remember my first preseason at United the first team do you remember Brucey wearing um was it so basically boiling like 25 he'd wear the wet top that you'd only wear like in and he'd wear the jumper and he'd literally sort of pack himself up so like to almost like to like you said about this the saer before to lose weight to on the runs he'd sweat more remember that was that was quite common back then used to do it as well would do that plastic bag on yeah the bin Lin underne is it true I once read this it's just got about the Premier League that did any managers ever work the players harder say if it was like back in the day I don't know like a lower team playing s the man united would they work them harder that week because they thinking we're not going to get anything at the weekend then it was when it was games that they thought they could get something kind of te them off a little bit I read something about that we did that so basically we in wasn't at the start of the Season it was in January he do like a little mini pre-season in sort of like first few weeks in January and around the FA Cup time I remember was playing Aston Villa at home on a Saturday like mid January and he said look you might struggle a little bit on Saturday you might feel a little bit you've worked too hard this week but we've got to push through this next couple of weeks and get this work into you for March April May and he sort of said I might have to sacrifice a bit of we won that game I think but I remember him saying that in January one year um around that time we do like a mini pre-season we did one um we did one year of the treble the year of the treble with Jim Ryan when so if you remember I always remember this Kido left and there was a period before Steve McLaren came in where Jim Ryan was the coach do you remember us doing the runs on Littleton Road where the gaffer had the stopwatch gaffer never came over and had the stopwatch in his and they were doing four we doing 200 meters and 400 meter runs for about two or three weeks wow always remember that in that January period you remember it no he was I can't I can't yeah honestly I that was that was we we used to do like a mini preseason yeah I remember every day we were doing that no in January we did like three lots of runs one week three lots of runs the next three lots of runs the week after it was like nine sets of runs and and strength work it was almost like a build a rebuild for the end of the season you think it's amazing way everyone talks about the international break the winter break but then obviously you're talking about doing actual preseason in January yeah yeah but you one the best trip we ever had we on about obviously when we went to Brazil for that trip remember the World Cup Championship that was a good trip not good for you obviously the man united FA Cup business yeah listen obviously it's another story but we came back we had to go to Brazil for the world club championships didn't we but it was like you pulled out the FA Cup that's the one yeah but we had AG great a couple of weeks over we had a bit of sun and obviously no we did we you laughing well you didn't play in the fa but the teams but the teams we were up against leads at the time we do but we did did a couple of bad results when we were away so we came back with a spring in our step it was like I was like a mini break we played who was it we played in the first game Gary you made a You made a couple of big mistakes didn't you so we Bally knocked out after about 20 minutes the Beast the Beast he admit it you two back passes I won I literally two back pass against Vasco de G was it the Beast was it the striker Ed Mundo andaro andario two of the best no he's a different he was the Beast right he was the Beast it was 2000 it was year after won the treble it was the year that we got the first it was like the inaugural World Cup championships and you were allow just pull out of the F but it wasn't Happ listen that went crazy for the everything was was that to get votes for what but we came back refreshed we had a bit of sun we got knocked out quickly so with a couple you see just just how you just kind of like just thinking about that the fa we weren't happy to miss it was a nightmare it was but was DEC unbelievable us more less just don't he played all the kids didn't he when they went to the club World Cup yeah he yeah I can't believe we weren't happy not listen we weren't happy about it we weren't happy about it I don't think even the manager was about it to be honest with you time but the point was it was a good trip wasn't it Brazil was a good trip I personally didn't enjoy it Ro yeah you a disaster yeah it was a nightmare for you but we a great trip we bonded we a couple of night old we came back we freshed yeah cuz what you about January is it January cuz when we came back Leeds had had played two or three games certainly played two games when we were away and they were obviously one of the and they all both the teams slipped up when we were away so we came back like would have spring nice little break like Aral this year unbel hey what a crack we had didn't we we had a great crack interesting so paragliding he couple of nights imagine paraglider the paraglide hey you don't about highlights in your career that's probably up there with the highlights in my career parag parag over the pool where all the lads were done below us and the manager me honestly it was me B who else Teddy Ted so crazy that can't imagine you paragliding over the pool BR was the mobile phones back then then what the be any footage no I think so but we were told before obviously you're banned and then you have to land on the beach and I remember thinking I hope my Cru sh was brilliant honestly I done I done a bunge in Norway in Norway I'm not sure because you know when you go out I remember what happened with our is that we was in Norway and George Graham had to go back for his daughter's wedding and then St houon was involved and I remember George Graham he done a meeting cuz he to leave I think his flight was late he done the meeting at probably about 700 and we're all sitting there and he said no one out you know when I've gone I'll be back Stuart you're in charge of this and that no one out like he left and I'm not joking by half night everybody we were out we were out it was a nightmare cuz when we got back I done a bungee done my thigh muscle and's ander's done ander's done it as well I think ander's done his ankle or something it was like Carnage but like what was good about that particular one is that it was we were so together it was so good and we had that little break and and like George Graham weren't there we could relax started the season pretty well it was pretty would you go out for a drink a lot with Arsenal was there a big drinking culture when you first got to Arsenal yeah when you any like anything like that as well you know what I mean I thought that the guys were very disciplined there certain times in the preseason you're not drinking at all but then that time like when you get the day it was it was it was really good but like I'm not a great drinker but I like being amongst it but I I just slip off I slip off I pour drink down the side never that right you see my little move and then they play these Chistmas you know they play them them drink games Fizz bang and you're like so when it's Fizz it goes to you when it's bang it goes across there and that and I'm playing the game I don't understand it getting hammered you Steve M you remember coaches coming in Char remember Steve one of his first few month well his first preseason at United he cut me out I remember thinking the first few days it'll be steady but Steve came in I think he had just doing the bleep test on the first day and I got caught up with I dropped out cuz you was you ham had a kind of good few days before pre I remember thinking I'm going to have a good blast before preseason the first few days can be late but Steve got it Tru I think the first M we' have bleach he must known and I dropped up very early and then a couple of days later I had blisters and I kind of missed a run in the afternoon and I was at home again a week into preseason Steve was still new to the club and um I got a pH I'm back at my house in Manchester my wife and Steve McLaren's under pH I'm steeve am we CL Steve what is it anyway yeah I'm just a bit worried about your preseason you know you you dropped out early with the bleep test and uh blisters and you blisters I went [ __ ] Steve I was like I was like I was like offended that he would ring me like could have pull me to training I went Steve don't you worry about me I'll be [ __ ] ready for them games don't you worry about that I was but Steve was certainly looking at me I don't know what he was trying to challenge me or he was thinking I'll take he's taking me out whatever it might be but I was I was yeah did you feel bad about the fact that you weren't you weren't In Those runs or was you no because it was was the bleep test I was caught up but this was the first day I went don't worry I've got four or five weeks to get up the speed and I did have blisters you can't do anything about blisters loot of players have missed blisters I blisters from whatever I Tred new boots or new trainers I can't imagine you missing training cuz just a run thing in the afternoon I never I never got I I wore my boots Big so I think never well even when all the time mine had to be big what size are you and what did you wear so um as we half size bigger on what your size eight so no so I'm a nine on my right foot and N half on my left foot seriously see so I'd wear a 10 on me left and 9 half on me right is that normal must cost your fortune buying boots did you have to buy two different Siz boots that's not don't buy the bo when he was younger when he was younger my boots I could get me fingers all the way around me while you foot that's I couldn't wear them I couldn't wear them honestly feet are broke my feet almost everyone so they so sensitive so we have to let to wear them bigger God I should have went half a size bigger I might have scored some goals yeah I remember buty in Milan once and he had blisters on the pitch and kiddo shouted on to me buty go down he said he said uh what's up I've got blisters get you have to come off I'll run it off I'll run it off it did you ever go in the bath with your boots on when you got your new boots yeah that used to help put newspaper in them and everything yeah Lords of Vaseline on the back of your heels tape your tongue down exactly yeah Fair the one the one the one was Vaseline one it putting Vaseline around love looking forward to wearing my new boots cuz they were boot they were lovely at the time not like you look at the boots now but like I say you're smart yeah M I'm size seven so I used to wear six and a half no that when I was PR I thought his feet tiny John three Bo a game three players Bo a game it's not right new for training every day and three pairs a game remember the K man at England and he had a full skip just with JT I used to go through two season I hated my boots I hat I'd we the same boot until it literally gave up on I did as well we were deodora we we were if you had a boot that you comfy in that you like abely you winning in that you're playing in I had a match Boot and a training Boot and I'd go until how much were you get from the door at the time were you are more than me probably you and Phil Double Deal One it my deal was 75 grand I think 50 or 75 yeah a week never can seen any kind of advert or picture of you in diodoro so we ruined the worldwide brand never saw it I was I was with L when I first come through and um reason didn't sound because she and Mike with them that's why they L had no money left how much were you asking 2 million want pay me under quid a gameo for the U team so when I was like 14 brilliant wow getting but then the problem was is that paying for your side your siggies just taking care of wor the side side is on me I was P 15 but was from the England first team I play for the England first team yeah you got 100 quid for you I'm sure you made there around did you yeah you signed like a a contract with Knight was it like eight years or seven years or 10 years or something stupid no did you 10 year Jesus do you still have now I think I got to eight of them me I love I love the fact that a beer M like when you're 14 that I was buing me I was I was lending how did they give they didn't give you cash obviously it's just like oh you put in parent account yeah I'll be getting an an advance of me dad ni some people get lifelong deals though don't they like nich sponsor them for like yeah he stay with them beex must be with adid yeah I think he is but I think n Clon all the players now 30 yeah are they saw they so they're not they're not giving contracts to anyone above 30 wow I don't get that I don't get it like har Kane now that's why he's changed oh yeah is it har probably be with him forever is he with Ronaldo SK oh with Sketch it probably that would be like properly a long deal for AR that'll be a lifelong deal surely surely it'll be wearing sketches when he's 70 it would have to have been a lifelong deal to do that deal I think it would have to been a big one one yeah not if if if after 30 or not they're not really signing people you got to go somewhere else yeah I saw that night let who did they let go night a few weeks ago I I'm not sure I think probably the only one need Keepers Chris there's nothing like though getting like gay was there from like new gay if you if you don't you don't matter what money you're on if you don't get excited buy some a free droper GI everybody so excited even that best was the Cagers um when what tournament was it that's been 2004 something then all the families come around for the afternoon everyone Sat by the pool I just see this group of carers walking in all in all the England gear it was honestly remember it was so quiet by the pill was like players at the kids there the wives girls whatever and the next thing all these C just run into a big bombing the best I've seen good hilarious I love [Music] that right there's been some Community questions coming in if you could swap lives with someone for the day who would you choose swap lives swap lives wow it's deep it's deep that is quite deep never think how deep we go in there because how deep I quite like my life oh good answer probably would SW with you actually you okay not my three hour even even when you're late I'm going Bruce Springsteen cuz I'm seeing him next week I'd love to go out on that stage in front of 45 50,000 people and support you yeah yeah yeah that's a good one um get no AB I'm going Bruce yeah right you'll have a good answer I don't know Denzel no Bruce if you're watching can I come have a photograph with you next week I bet you come on here with a sh guitar who would I'm trying to think who would cuz like we would have like to you know when you see them perform sing a sport I probably you know I probably go I'll probably go mck Jagger what life mck Jagger mck Jagger Jesus definitely mck Jagger think so yeah MC Jagger probably just off the top of my head he's the one that's com into my head as the kind of life you think wow that's an amazing he's still doing it man yeah still doing still cranking out unbelievable songs I honestly I remember Bruce you see with um with with Mick Jag as well I remember doing the 98 World Cup when I got injured out of it I remember I got a called did I tell you about this that you missed the World Cup no no no all right did you got a called right no no no I got a call from someone and they were saying listen I rep represent Mick Jagged he wants to give you a call and I said yeah it's fine and so the person called back and it sounded like mck Jagger and I was like stop [ __ ] so I put the phone down and then it came back and then the person said Ian honestly seriously M he wants to speak to you about something he's got to have a word with a French TV company and he wants to he wants to just have a couple of like couple of lines and I said yeah fine so he came on and then he said I said to him listen just just say listen I'm just really excited about the youngster you know he's in the team he's just coming to team Michel lo you know hopefully and viously M he said that on French TV Michael Owen goes and does that and I remember we was on a motorbike trip me and the boys on the Harley to Barcelona and Mick Jagger was staying next door um and and he he he knew I was staying next door and then he came across with me and my mates in there knock the door what's that nice hotel in um in Barcelona the really the top one he was at the we were both on the top yes yeah and we're both on the top mck Jagger knocked the [ __ ] door bro what and said listen all of you invited to the to the concert come to the concert man and like I couldn't believe it like mck Jag is like my friend off of the back of that and so since then you get on there you know something so Mick probably wouldn't come on simply because he doesn't know but it's it's I can still make a call but like since then he's been somebody that's always been Forefront of my mind in the way that he's just like the way he just like rememberer now I probably could get I probably could get in touch with samik right Ro who would you who would you start with you know what maybe Jesus Bob Dylan yes just cuz amazing singer great writer like your Bob Dylan Bob Dylan I'd have to have a good think about not jumping straight in if we're going Singers I'll go Adele just cuz imagine your voice coming out like that she's a good singer she is amazing no but the thing is again Mick with Mick it's just the performance all right let it go we get it seen amazing thank you yeah amazing have you ever bought anything at a charity event that you regret a yeah I bought a um I mention I bought a six iron somebody said it was someone said it was Bobby Moos six iron it's really strange how so strange how why have you only got his six you think to yourself give me all of these clubs give but like I bought a six I think I must have paid like four grand for a six iron right and every time I look at it I feel like I've been robbed because it just could be any six yeah but was charity though wasn't it you yeah but like the thing is I genuinely thought yeah I'm going to buy Bobby Mo was it for Bobby's charity oh was oh that's fair enough so I'm hoping that it was his but it's always weird that it's you had to UNICEF do would I bought them conquer tickets maybe yeah I was was you guilty buying them was it a guilty no that was charity listen was up against someone else it was was B with you I was up against a a striker at the club from London oh Teddy yeah I was you he would have lost Teddy could have had all his money off him that night I was encouraged by the people on my table to keep going who was who was encouraging you I think it was buy how did don't him beat you don't let beat you two tickets to Concord to New York and it was for Unicef listen I'm only having a bit of fun with it but it was 10 12 14 16,000 I think Teddy went to about I think Teddy went to 24 and I went I'll go one more and then he can have them and I went 26,000 and Teddy went you can have them so was it a return return yeah yeah yeah people do do that don't charity yeah I'm always the other person like I'll donate a shirt and I'm there at the auction and there's like three people bidding and they'll all be like near each other and they're live at the auction and they go Jill can you get another two shirts and I'm I always and you can't say knowing the no I can't sometimes you do you try and do your bit with a chart you're you're trying to get the bids up listen I've done that done charity Lancer Cricket I think was Bobby Moore's um fund and Clyde tsy got involved it was a quiz and it was a program program 1966 World Cup program signed by all the players and I'm sit I don't want to get involved in the biding and they couldn't get to fee up they were like 800 a th000 they got Bobby Moore's wife and they said we've actually got insured for 4,000 we can't sell it for anything Lord that so I'm sitting and I'm really embarrassed when I was like so I went I'll go four th to together WR and the guy went so I I was only just trying to get it going grand for a program honestly have you still got it yeah you know I don't think I have it I've just thoughted do what you said about D so we me uh Phil buty skulls gigy we we've probably over the last 10 12 years I reckon probably like 750 800 Grand has been raised by playing Five aside against do so we if we said donate a a charity prize we' say at the fivers will play you for half an hour w or whatever and people would pay seriousy charties we should little five side team I go my KNE my my but seriously that's that's good serious people pay a lot you know that you my brother my brother went to your hotel bar uh the hotel um after the the Arsenal game the weekend and you give a pound to go in or something you know that yeah for charity yeah and then you matched so yeah all good stuff he didn't go in he left he said a pound forget that no he goes in and obviously you're give that for Char so good stuff you do that five side side he'll probably have blisters he'll drop out yeah remember the last game we had with him you two were good actually that game he wasn't he was been out drinking no I thought no the first game was all right second game play that game heyit we'll go to the game play oh you can in you get my we're run away to the game in the mini M came actually from BBC to play Mah played didn't not the first game M played in one of the games no I think he played must the first no I think he played the first I did he come yeah definitely came but we R to the game you'd been old or something he was a and I I was in the front of the Mini Bus we were going he's going I don't feel good You' had obviously two PS I but you were eating a donut we're on the way to the e a donut he was eating a donut G I don't figure it I went [ __ ] dropped the donut [ __ ] hell he was eating a donut on the way to the game anyway I I didn't feel too good we're playing talk sport right ITV be talk G yeah the first oneor he competitive was the first time I'd met him I give him a bad pass he was like Jill that was [ __ ] you were my get tuck in remember I kept said no but you took it so seriously I was like this is this is meant to be a bit of fun this is why I was ONN do you know the guy I went up for a header smashed a guy with my elbow in the back of the head he's not my agent he only the other day how many agents have you got one Jes right last question what's your favorite piece of memorabilia what you mean from your own career I don't know it's just a question it can be anything something that you think do you know what good question it's good question I'm going to say that when um I played my 50th cap for England in Holland at Amsterdam Arena I don't know if you were playing and all the players signed me a big Montage of my career and I've got I've got that you know what the thing I look back I mess on like the one thing I really look back and I and I I have them and I look at it I do I like enjoy me International caps there something nice about isn't there yeah I like I like it's probably yeah I'm going to probably stay on that because like first cap against Cameroon you know what I mean that's probably the one when I look at that that brings back the best memories cuz the journey was tough bro but then you get there then you feel then when you get there you realize you got to go again but like that is probably the first cap yeah you get a gold for your H hundredth did you get a Gold Cup yeah that's special how many times you play when um 120 you play Jesus W yes I've got all the cups you see give me Mom Dad I've got my first one then course I went to his house a couple week he's got this hexagonal glass display I'll call it with every cap like sort of oh my God that's brilliant man man's probably to give me a boot when I got the record right gold gold boot for England uh was it 7even and a half oh you got your a boot every record every obviously the United one still there but every record I got got broke so quickly like har I got the youngest youngest youngest player at the Autos yes the week later a guy from Switzerland got a youngest scorer a week later way much way muching records are there far broken come youngest Premier League goal scer two months later James Miler yeah I remember do you hold any record at all want the United one that won't go for how many goals United 253 that ain't going you're going to have that for Life Who The Who that ain't going for a minute you think about it now that is at the moment I'm saying who's but Roy that's not going for a minimum now of 15 someone would have to come in now and play for like 15 Seasons they or 14 season he's got that for life that one's you've got that for 15 years what's rashford got what's rashford got uh go Marcus got would he be near 100 yeah he's over 100 1 31 he's got to score another 130 he get fit have a chance yeah well he's near it you I mean probably probably the gold cap cuz you got in a box and that engraved all the teams you played on it although when it first arrived it had Fragile on and it was smashed into a million pieces so to get another one but I think that that gold C what about your jungle thing you is that what did you get for that just like a crown I left it there yeah yeah I left it there although the other day I was in an olympic boat with the eight Olympic roarers that are going to the Olympics I'll tell the quick version my all the put in the boat to Roar with them my all hit the water snapped this 90 grand boat the side of the B come off and I got the piece it snapped in half and all the guys signed it but if they lose the Olympics because I bought the bo piece of a boat Jes ni One Christ and on that note we finished another episode of stick to [Music] football involed in that way bought a gigsy top you know when you
