[Music] when i was a little kid i had one hand-me-down toy that always eluded me it was a bright red almost evil looking robot with a crown of horns atop its head i enjoyed playing with the toy until my dog eventually ruined it it wouldn't be two years later that i would learn this was getter dragon a mech from a series i consider to be one of the greatest of all time penned by one of the greatest artists to ever live his name was kenishikawa and he created my personal favorite classic mecca series getter robo [Music] oh [Music] is a masterpiece first launching in 1974 and bringing with it the world's introduction to the concept of a combining transforming robot it would quickly become one of the most iconic and influential series in mecca's history millions of years ago a strange cosmic energy called ghetto rays pelted earth forcing the dinosaurs to hide in the earth's core and causing apes to begin their evolution into humans take that darwin you hack cut to the 1970s and an army of humanoid dinosaurs returns to the earth's surface hell-bent on humanity's destruction and reclaiming earth as their own japan's top scientist recruits three violent teenagers to pilot his unstoppable creation powered by those same ghetto rays the almighty ghetto robo the series would only grow from that basic premise with a constantly shifting cast of characters battling new armies of humanity threatening beings all while piloting new and increasingly terrifying ghetto robos kenny shikawa never stopped evolving his work which is fitting as evolution is the central theme of the franchise both in how it influences humanity's past present and future getter is an ambitious story that spans time and space itself it starts out with three rowdy teenagers beating down dinosaur mex and before you know it shifts into a tale of psychological and cosmic horror before capping it all off with an intergalactic war in which the very fate of the universe hangs in the balance the manga's greatest strength beyond its storytelling is its phenomenal cast of characters one of the strongest aspects of mecca in general is its ability to craft wonderful ensemble casts that really get you invested in the series and world and getter has one of the most batshit insane over the top yet surprisingly nuanced casts i've ever had the pleasure of spending time with each getter team is made up of a trio with each representing the body brain and heart of the team respectively the real selling point of getter's cast that keeps me so continuously engaged is that very few of them are actually good people on the surface ishikawa writes most of his characters as if they're modern day ronin violent wandering vagrants on the outskirts of society who through their strict personal code of honor and wild personalities always find a way to still do good for the world through a mutual sense of camaraderie ishikawa had a deep love of japanese history historical fiction and eastern religious philosophy he also loved pushing the boundary when it came to violence and sexual content in his work he implemented the essence of this into all of his work including getter he kept pushing the series forward over the following decades totaling out to five main manga entries that make up his ghetto robo saga on top of that there's also three toei animation tv series three incredible ovas by brains bass a strategy rpg and a ton of spin-offs getter is such a miracle and that ishikawa was able to keep it interesting for its entire run even after returning from a 15 year hiatus of working on other projects it's not often that an artist can end their most popular series go off and redefine their entire art and writing style only to return to that series over a decade later with its best entry yet hiroshikawa pulled that off cause he's honestly the goat the influence that he had on so many industry talents is palpable with guren lagan kill the kill and pro-mare creator and writer kazuki nakashima who actually worked as ishikawa's assistant in the early 2000s stating countless times that gutter robo is his favorite franchise of all time and the main inspiration for his work he even considers himself the number one getter robo fan hideakiano considers ishikawa to be one of the masters of the industry and refers to his work as a personal bible if you want to get into the series there's two very good entry points the original manga or the 1998 ova shouldn't get a robo armageddon armageddon was the first exposure to the series that many western fans had and it's a pretty great starting point but if you can i highly advise reading ishikawa's manga first as its unique twists on the characters and themes of the series are more appreciated this way armageddon is a standalone ova that takes disparate elements from many parts of the getter saga all of the ovas are excellent on their own right but they're even better as supplementary pieces to the manga after all ishikawa's manga is really where it's at if you want to get the full unrestrained get a robo experience it's really just a fantastic gateway to mecca as a whole kenny shikawa was an ambitious author who kept experimenting in storytelling and presentation in all of his work till he tragically passed away in 2006 leaving gedorobo's final entry get a robo arc on a cliffhanger that is until out of nowhere and sorry if i sound like i'm about to cry while saying this and this is really casual because it is i just came off of hearing this news ghetto arc is actually getting an anime in 2021 from director jin kawagoe who directed the other three ovas so i'm a little [ __ ] right now and i had to delay this video a bit because of this news i'll talk more about this in the final segment of the video but i'm losing my [ __ ] and i'm very emotional in spite of this it's still definitely a series that's worth experiencing not just because of its quality but out of respect for ishikawa's influence over manga and anime in general he's regarded as a legend for good reason and he's been honored time and again by his best friend and get her robo co-creator gonagai the franchise still receives many spin-offs to this day with the most recent get a robo-high concluding as recently as this year it's a massive incredible franchise that's been around for 45 years and this video is my personal love letter to it i'm gonna be covering every single entry spin-offs and anime included this is a complete retrospective of getaroba and the legacy of kanishikawa [Music] kenny shikawa was born on june 28 1948. he grew up in what's now the city of nasu karasu yama throughout his youth he didn't particularly have any interest in the manga industry it wouldn't be till 1969 that his manga career would formally begin you see ishikawa was good friends with a man you're probably familiar with a man by the name of gonogai nagai had recently started his own manga production company with his brothers called dynamic productions they specialized in essentially licensing deals and making sure that nagai was able to see a profit from his work his revolutionary echi manga harenshi gokwin was the number one series in weekly shonen jump at the time with the desire to work on other projects the guy was looking for a few assistants to help him on his work this is where ishikawa would come in and become gondagai's disciple and assist an artist he'd work on chapters of harenshi gakuen and the abashiri family in september of 1969 under dynamic productions ishikawa would launch the first manga of his own gaku and bangaichi a school echimanga in a similar vein to harenshi gakuen in 1970 he'd assist gonogai on his manga gaku and taikutsu otoko in 1971 after having developed a distinct art style of his own he'd leave dynamic productions to pursue an independent career from 71 to 73 during his independent run he put out a handful of series including the raunchy comedy dorori man the manga adaptation of shotaro ishinomori's henshin ninja arashi and most importantly an adaptation of suburaya's ultraman taro both of these tokusatsu adaptations were far more violent than their tv counterparts with ultramantaro being ishikawa's first time drawing massive city-destroying battles a skill that was about to come in handy during this independent run he freelanced as a monster designer and cleanup artist at dynamic productions still being very close friends with gonogai and the rest of the staff ishikawa would make his official return to dynamic productions in 1974. his first manga upon returning would be a collaboration with legendary anime writer masaki tsuji a historical drama called katsu kaichu based on the life of the naval commander of the same name this would be ishikawa's first time really showing his love of japanese history to the public aside from this collaborative effort with a great tv writer the real reason ishikawa returned was to help gona gai on an upcoming project a project that had stemmed from growing a guy basically becoming the hottest name in anime and manga you see from 72 to 73 he had done a little thing called changing the entire industry he had hit a four-piece combo of extremely influential series the very violent and boundary pushing devil man the juvenile magical girl series cutie honey the horror comedy enmokun and the biggest success of all both literally and figuratively a series that would revitalize a somewhat dormant genre the world's introduction to the first piloted mecca mazinger z all four of these series also coincided with extremely successful toe animation tv series but mazinger z was the biggest ratings hit of the bunch annihilating tv viewership records and receiving some very successful toy tie-ins from bandai and their subsidiary poppy specifically the mazinger toy from poppy's jumbo machinder line in fact this toy sold so well that poppy basically begged gonogai and toei to create another giant robot this time with its gimmick being transformation because what's better than one toy well how about a toy that can be three different toys at once that's like three times the money right there bro come on go make another series come on you know you wanna but he really didn't wanna cause at the time gonna guy was feeling some serious burnout and who could blame him after so many hits this is where ishikawa would get involved again the guy came up with a very basic bare bones outline and basically handed the idea off to ishikawa to work on ishikawa would try to come up with some basic designs for the robot in its multiple forms as well as its pilots but would struggle and by struggle i mean actually struggle because look at these early designs this is pretty goofy he asked a guy for some help who was also frankly stumped on what to do it wasn't until one day when a guy in ishikawa were at a car dealership doing a test drive that they would get into a mild collision this caused golden guy to have an epiphany bro yo what if we just made the car smash into each other and that's how the robot combined and then you could smash it another way and it would combine that way that's what we're gonna do that's the design all right ken good luck which left ishikawa thinking okay what the [ __ ] am i supposed to do with that i actually need your help like for real bro after much trial and error the two would decide that it would be three jets that would combine into an imposing silhouette a machine called getter robo and it would have three distinct transformations the three jets that would make up get a robot would be the eagle jaguar and bear get machines if eagle leads the pack it would take its default appearance of getter one designed by kenny shikawa jaguar leading would bring out getter two designed by gona gai with bear's leading form being the aptly named getter three also designed by nagai with the ideas finalized the guy would hand off the manga to ishikawa and go and help toei with the animated series the tv series would air its first episode on april 4th 1974 with the manga making its debut three days later and weekly shonen sunday [Music] despite the anime being what released first by a few days i want to talk about ishikawa's manga first after a 65 million year slumber the reptiloids of the dinosaur empire awaken now ready to wipe out humanity and take earth as their own using their army of mechasaurus when the man who discovered the ghetto rays that caused humanity to evolve dr sautome gets wind of this he recruits three young men to pilot his greatest creation ghetto robo these three pilots are the martial artist ryoma nagare the genius revolutionary hayato jin and the judo master musashi tomoe together the three of them pilot get a robo and partake in increasingly risky battles against the dinosaur empire all while furthering their bonds and increasing their skills as pilots the first couple of chapters consist of a bunch of mini arcs introducing each pilot and how they were recruited by the saotome research institute from there the story hops into a monster of the weak structure for a couple of chapters before everything gets capped off in a bombastic finale the original ghetto robo is really as basic as you can get when it comes to a story get a robo in general wouldn't really get narratively deep till the third entry get a robo go and this is a hundred percent fine for two reasons one it was 1974 and the mecca genre was still finding its footing remember geder was the first series to have a combining robot it pretty much invented the gatai as we know it secondly ishikawa compensates for a simple narrative with excellent character writing character writing that reinforces this entry's central point that point being that no matter where you come from no matter who you are your bonds with your fellow humans can only make you stronger being a lone wolf can only take you so far humans naturally evolve to work together and as long as we do that we'll be able to overcome any threat that comes our way the getter team and dr saotome make for my favorite cast of characters from mecca's early days all three of the getter pilots are distinct and bombastic in their own way being genuinely believable troubled children as opposed to a more stoic group of heroes saotome selected them due to their immense strength and unhinged behavior you need to be insane and physically very capable to pilot getter and have a chance of withstanding direct contact with the immense power of getter raise ryoma is a violent [ __ ] with generally good intentions his introduction has him nearly murder an entire tournament's worth of innocent fighters in a show of revenge for his deceased father to the organizers he carries on his father's martial art style nagare kempo which he uses to brutalize anyone who dares to challenge him this dude will tear the head of a dog that attacks him clean off and just casually wipe off the blood like he didn't do anything but despite this brutality he's still willing to put his life on the line and protect humanity from the dinosaur empire and often takes everything with a fist first think later approach he's a hot-headed bastard with little regard for safety but a genuine belief that human life is something worth protecting as long as you're not a villain he's also got a wicked sense of humor that keeps you nervously laughing along with him you don't want to piss a guy like this off cause if you stay on his good side you'll be safe but the moment he sees you as a villain he will beat you within an inch of your life he's honestly one of my favorite mecha pilots ever his non-stop balls to the wall hot-headed approach to every situation he's put in is honestly a beneficial one in a war against the dinosaur empire as long as he's saving humanity he'll go all out however he needs to this is why ryoma is the body of the getter team and the blueprint for what i'd call the ishikawa protagonist pretty much all of ishikawa's main characters share similar behavioral traits with ryoma he's also not stagnant in his characterization either the final arc of ghetto robo has him go through a massive character change and it's really welcome to see while ryoma is the body hayato is the brains hayato is a cult calculating fighter with equally violent tendencies to ryoma but refined into a cleaner more calculated approach when he's first introduced the first subordinate of his army to piss him off gets his face ripped apart in a surgical manner and it's just nasty as hell hayato is also the most sophisticated of the group a former terrorist who destabilized his school created his own private army of students and tried to head-hunt politicians he has a bit of a wild backstory he's a brilliant strategist and a crafty bastard who's always trying to think five steps ahead of both his enemies and his allies even taking a position as saotome's assistant to help combat the dinosaur empire on the field and off in spite of his calm and clever nature he's still able to crack jokes and never comes across as a boar but with a body and a brain you also need a heart to complete the person and that heart is the legend the one and only based musashi musashi is the lovable big man of the trio and out of the three feels the most human he's not as brutal as ryoma or as slick as hayato instead he's a kid with a heart of gold and a bit of an odd man out with the crux of his arc being the need to prove that he's a valuable member of the getter team going as far as to try to take on battles by himself and learning the severity of the situation he's really in his constant attempts to impress the other two pilots makes him genuinely sympathetic he just wants his homies to truly respect him for the man he is and not treat him as second fiddle he definitely brings the most joy and energy to the team while playing the part of the comic relief the best part of the ghetto team aside from its cohesively thought out structure is the interactions between them being a fairly short manga ghetto unfortunately made some cuts in time for character development in its early chapters one chapter hayato is having a panic attack and hates the idea of being involved in this conflict at all the next he's all chill and it's as if we're in a different universe entirely the story jumps forward in time quite a bit which means there's some occasional whiplash in character behavior but these concessions and pacing issues are rectified by the genuinely funny and believable banter and tangible bond that the trio forms roasting each other getting into fights and sleeping in the same bed like real homies do all while trying to hit on dr saotome's daughter michiru in one way or another they managed to feel real despite how ludicrous the story is together they make for a really likable group of heroes despite being so violent and aggressive compared to the typical protagonists after all they're pretty much all dirty street rats whose parents are either dead or not mentioned at all it's only natural they'll be a bit of a wild bunch as i mentioned earlier it's as if they're all modern day ronin with a similar brotherly coat of honor between them that prevents them from feeling completely inhuman ryoma is far closer to a miyamoto musashi-like figure than he is a typical superhero dr sautome is also great always common collected and serving as a strong leader whenever needed he's the glue that holds the entire operation together with a stern and commanding presence he's willing to risk it all to defeat the dinosaur empire even accepting the sacrifice of his own son as necessary for the greater good some of the side characters are pretty strong too with the weapons inventor dr shikishima in particular having some incredibly funny conversations with ryoma during a dinosaur empire raid on the lab and michiru dr satoma's daughter is also here too she's a she's a woman that's her role that's all she is in the story genki saotome sun also exists i guess while some of the side characters are hit or miss the villains are pretty strong emperor gore leader of the dinosaur empire has a really commanding crazy presence he's always talking a big game even when he's getting owned and you gotta give the guy credit where it's due despite always taking else he's always finding new crazy ass ways to attack humans from genetic experimentation to de-evolving us into monkeys to trying to burn the earth's surface with an artificial sun to kill every human to [ __ ] throwing out an army of mind controlling newts the methods him and the dinosaur empire use are more than brutal enough to make them feel like a very real threat and gore's slimy braggadocious nature helps compound this you really want to see these guys get crushed by the getter team gore is definitely one dastardly [ __ ] and he's a really great villain the back and forth trash talking between him and the getter team also makes for an amazing rivalry and it's not just gore who solid some of his generals are pretty fun too shouts out to the best of the generals the one and only general bat and of course i can't talk about the dinosaur empire without talking about their mechasaurus all the mechasauruses they deploy look pretty silly but come across as intimidating thanks to ishikawa's excellent presentation and that presentation in general is easily the best part of ghetto robo ishikawa's artwork action scenes and panel layout are to die for ishikawa's early artwork is deceptively simple it may be rough around the edges and have some odd angles on occasion but it's extremely expressive wild-ass facial expressions both comedic and serious punctuate every scene with a level of intensity that scratchy shading under character's eyes those thick intense outlines and those crazy spiral eyes are just gorgeous nobody at the time quite did facial expressions the way ishikawa did and still to this day they're pretty unmatched and it's not just the main characters that get this treatment either ishikawa's background characters are something special everyone having a goofy ass face with some wild shapes big angular mouths weird thick drooling lips and other oddities they're all damn freaks and it contrasts really well to the handsome and deadly faces of the main trio unfortunately there is a short but very racist depiction of a black man featured for about five pages he's one of the first goon's ryoma fights and it looks terrible this was in no way okay and this was a big issue with ishikawa's early art as ishikawa evolved as an artist he would definitely put a stop to this though it wasn't perfect but it was still a huge improvement from what he was drawing in the 70s and frankly it's an unfortunate reality that in the 60s and 70s many manga artists based their illustrations on early american cartoons and we know how those looked so this wasn't something that was exclusive to ishikawa but thankfully again it's only five pages and it's something that ishikawa wouldn't repeat on the other hand a place where ishikawa had no issues is the background detail from lush forests to vehicles and machinery there's an immense amount of detail on some of these backgrounds that contrast really well to the getter ishikawa's extra thick line work prevents pages from feeling muddled everything is clear and very concise in its layout pages themselves also flow wonderfully with every panel smoothly transitioning to the next this is especially clear during the manga's action sequences watching getter open get and switched to another form at a moment's notice always keeps battles feeling fresh with endless potential for the getter team to try out a new strategy take for example this scene where getter 3 is stuck in a tornado watch how they quickly open get and start letting the tornado carry them there they quickly fuse into the speedy getter 2 and immediately loop around the enemy the getter team has an amazing sense of coordination and this is communicated through these battles ghetto robo is only able to reach its true potential when all three pilots are in sync if a pilot is off their a-game the entire fight could go south very quickly this goes back to this entry's main theme of camaraderie and teamwork being our biggest strength as humans and that strength can be immense especially when channeled into a machine like ghetto robo watching get a robo fight is brutal ryoma's getter 1 uses its fists and its getter tomahawk to tear apart and beat down any foes that come in its path it's also got its getter beam to turn enemies to ash emphasis on the impact every attack from it leaves really sells its brutality and wonderfully matches up with ryoma's style of combat outside of the cockpit hayato's getter too can move at untrackable speeds brought into focus by some insane shaky speed lines with its iconic drill arm it can shred enemies into a bloody mulch leaving nothing behind as for musashi's getter 3 it can go ham with brutal grabs and throws using its elastic arms all three forms are applied expertly by the getter team in battle and seeing gutter's imposing silhouette stand above its enemies with only its eyes visible on occasion really illustrates the sheer terror it must strike into the hearts of the dinosaur empire just imagine if this towering red devil was tearing you limb from limb the gutter team's creative application of these three forms keeps every fight in the series memorable and the excellent page layout present in these fights also carries over to casual conversations your eyes are always going to be engaged while taking in ishikawa's excellent dialogue gedorobo is just a really strong start to the series it's a simple story that stays true to its central theme never losing focus on telling the story it wants to like i said it's not particularly complex and that's okay the series laid the foundation for the combining mecca without it everything from golian to gravion likely wouldn't exist in the same form or at all and i can't even imagine what super sentai's combining mechs would look like without gutter's popularity ishikawa really knocked it out of the park with his first entry it's thoroughly entertaining through and through and a great start that lays the foundation for what would become a legendary franchise but despite my praise for it it wasn't really the manga that was the popular entry in this series at the time the real star of the show in terms of ratings was the toei animation tv series toy animations get a robot is pretty good there's a reason it was successful to begin with early 70s mecca anime in general is really fun though they often suffered from being toy tie-ins there's a lot of genuinely good concepts in this series that help build the groundwork for how the genre would change later remember this was an era before mechanical design really existed as a credited job that's just kind of how things were pre-okawara getter itself and a majority of the mechasaurus in the tv series were designed by ishikawa who i may add had direct contact with the show's four writers they passed ideas back and forth and actually helped shape each other's respective versions of getter the themes of brotherhood camaraderie and the burning passion of youth they're all present here but one thing that was certainly not shared between the two was the character writing being a series that was targeted at younger kids who would be asking for toys the cast was neutered quite a bit except for musashi who's pretty much the same character between the two virgins he's just as bombastic and lovable as he is in the manga though he is a tad more aggressive here he's really the best character in the show and he's a riot to watch the dude's also complete horndog in the show always trying to hit on michiru his general shenanigans just make him a great comic relief character too and he thankfully never gets overbearing his voice actor toku nishio also kills it in the role musashi is just so goddamn good here he was the show's most popular character for a good reason this popularity would push ishikawa to implement quirks from tv musashi into the manga including giving him the haircut that tv musashi had michiru is an actual character in the anime going through a bit of a personal struggle with her family as well as juggling her friendship with the getter team while also having a far more productive role by piloting a support unit around the battlefield normally be honest this [ __ ] is basically a participation trophy her presence in the anime is far more apparent than her background role in the manga and that's a really welcome change she's also got the same prominent pointy nipple pieces on her pilot gear like ryoma does cause why not hayato is a baller in the anime always being the quiet contemplative cool guy he's not the genius he was in the manga but he trades it out for one of the strongest jawlines in history and possibly the most smug face in all of anime his smile is one of my favorite things ever you so [ __ ] precious when you smile he actually gets arguably the best episodes of the show dedicated to him and he gets fleshed out reasonably well he's not quite as good as his manga counterpart but he's still pretty great when he's not being smug as [ __ ] or going through emotional turmoil he's playing his damn harmonica sometimes at the same time you're gonna be hearing this a lot ryoma is unfortunately a bit of a blank slate essentially just being an insert for the children watching his appearance and personality are the most far removed from his ishikawa iteration now he's just a toei man uh what's a toei man well basically any 70s toei protagonist designed by iconic character designer kazuoko matsubara or to make the explanation easier all these are pretty good what what is this segment two women look the same but honestly this is fine because komatsubara's men are beautiful peep realms fit right here and tell me he isn't the baddest [ __ ] you've ever seen i will say that ryoma's mother and father are actually alive in the tv series which makes for at least one interesting episode involving him it's really a shame he's so generic because he's played by akira kamia who definitely does his best with what he's working with satome's role in the show is far more subdued than it was in the manga he's basically science man who just explains what's going on to you and he's younger for some reason and has a dumb mustache the dinosaur empire is just kind of silly here they get the job done though their methods are far more pg than the manga which is to be expected and the mechasaurus in general definitely range in quality and design there's not much depth here but that's fine as it follows a pretty typical monster of the week structure everything has to return to the status quo for the next episode to feel normal though it still tries and succeeds with character development in quite a few places the ghetto team's bonds do grow throughout the show though their interactions aren't as strong as they were in the manga there are still some fun exchanges here and there but it's never quite as witty as ishikawa's writing straining the potential for development though is the comic relief chucklefuck trio of anime original characters manji joho and asatara they really don't add much to the show aside from some occasional funny hijinks with musashi but even with some of these lackluster elements the show is still a lot of fun the quality of the animation is pretty consistent and honestly fairly decent though of course there's some expected jank here and there looping crowds strange cuts characters just disappearing from existence and just look at musashi's face right here i love this so much wait watch this turn again oh look he's angry now he's happy oh boom now he's sad i love this dude so much you know what [ __ ] it the border for the rest of this segment is musashi cam the fights in the show are fun and flashy if a bit tedious and there's some cool original elements that the tv show would introduce to the fights like getter 3 being used as an underwater tank which would become a staple later on but honestly seeing ghetto's transformations animated is pretty silly in the manga when get a robo combines and open gets there's always a snappiness to it things feel like they're just popping in place as they should here the gatai sequence looks like the get machines are melting into each other it looks pretty silly but it fits the general design and look of the show aesthetically the show is quintessential 70s toei soft rounded appearances on every character and object cut through by thick line work and a beautiful color palette i just love how vibrant and welcoming these old toe shows looked the series clocks in at a full 51 episode so i wouldn't be surprised if you don't exactly feel like checking it out but if you do here's the 8 episodes that i suggest you check out if you want to feel out the show at its best the show maintains a consistent quality throughout its 51 episodes though which is very commendable toys getter robo has no official release in the west so you're gonna have to do the usual if you want to watch it it's got a kikuchi composed soundtrack too so that [ __ ] slaps iseo sasaki also sings the show's timeless opening theme this is one of the most iconic openings of the 70s so i'm sure you've already heard it the song is so well known on its own that hong kong director stephen chao used it in his film the mermaid [Music] gaduroba was doing really well as a series overall both its manga and tv show about halfway through its run though one of toei's writers shinichi kimura and gonogai who is still passing ideas to the staff on and off were becoming slightly fed up with the status quo formula of each episode in an attempt to keep the show from getting stale and tell a more serious story they went to ishikawa with a drastic proposal kill off ryoma in both the show and manga leaving audiences with the message that no one is invincible while ishikawa really dug the idea on a conceptual level he was hesitant that the heads of toei and poppy would enjoy losing profit after the death of the leading man and he was right because toei rejected that idea immediately toei felt that if they really wanted to kill off a character it would have to be the quote-unquote least important member of the trio with this yukimuro ishikawa and nagai would create one of the most memorable ambitious and expertly executed final acts of any manga from this era boilers of course are going to follow so you can skip here if you'd like to avoid them but note that this is such an important moment for the franchise that it's pretty impossible to talk about the rest without bringing it up the death of musashi tomoe was a bit of a watershed moment for the series and mecca in general not only did it feel yukimuro's goal to teach kids that these fictional characters were not in fact invincible but it also gave ishikawa an opportunity in the manga to create a bombastic all-out finale that begins with ryoma's seemingly sacrificing himself to damage the dinosaur empire from here the story is flowing into chaos as ryoma returns with amnesia things get even crazier as a mysterious new enemy faction is introduced the hiyaki empire a group of humans who have genetically modified themselves into oni their goals are the same as the dinosaur empire they want to take earth as their own and because of this we get three factions battling it out in a finale that goes completely off the wall with twist after twist ensuing the battle culminates in musashi taking one last stand using the getter's core as a mini nuke demolishing most of the dinosaur empire in the process but throwing his own life away happy that he at least proved himself to his brothers in a gorgeously rendered moment that hits emotionally with some of my favorite panels from ghetto's original run this launches the last few chapters into an all-out final battle between the getter team and what remains of emperor gore's forces in the midst of this battle dr saotome's newest creation ghetto robo-g is unveiled and with its power ryoma and hayato plan to stop the dinosaur empire once and for all but their efforts remain fruitless as the dinosaur empire under general bat's command flees back underground and emperor gore is left behind only to be spontaneously killed by the hiyaki empire leaving the getter team alone to face this new threat and setting up a sequel this final act does a lot right first it manages to pull off indonesia story correctly hitting ryomo with some real emotional baggage from the loss of his memories and his new inability to fight we get to see hayato and musashi push themselves to their limits and it leads to a beautiful send-off to musashi that wraps up his character arc really well with ryoma finally regaining his memories due to the death of musashi we get to see a new more vulnerable side to the character he's now more determined than ever to protect the earth he never wants to be faced with this kind of loss again killing off emperor gore in such an unsatisfying manner is also in my opinion a stroke of genius both the characters and the reader are left very unsatisfied and feel like that kill was stolen from them it further establishes the hijacking empire as a bunch of rat bastards and it puts you right up there if hayato and ryoma's need to see them crushed contrasting all this character development and great setup for the sequel is what the tv show does hey guys i'm musashi hayato and ryoma are out of action i'm gonna go drive the support unit into the dinosaur empire's base and blow myself up and that's it here's the hijacking empire they just kind of showed up they're not actually involved in the conflict but they're here now saying hey guys we're the villains now oh yeah by the way gore wasn't even the real villain in the anime it was the anime original guy this guy i don't even remember his name and i don't care to remember because he's boring so yeah unfortunately the show's finale is a bit on the rush side but getter had finally concluded its original tv and manga run with the manga concluding at four volumes from here there wasn't even a break ishikawa and toei would both immediately jump into the series sequel get her robo g [Music] show uses the same [ __ ] theme song but they added some seizure-inducing [ __ ] in the opening look at this ah ghetto robo g's manga and anime began only a week after the first axe conclusion in may of 1975 with the manga lasting for a measly volume and a half and the anime running for 39 episodes picking up some months after the originals finale ryoma and hayata were now joined by benki kuruma as a new third pilot this time the ghetto team goes up against the hiyaki empire led by emperor brai and their army of hiyaki beasts thankfully in this fight the getter team has the new ghetto robo g a mech far more powerful than the original ghetto robo made up of the three get machines dragon liger and poseidon together the three machines can make up the getter dragon get her liger or get her poseidon get her dragon is awesome and as i said at the start of the video was my first exposure to the franchise dragon's design is pretty great with a few caveats sporting a new sharp looking cape and spiked shoulder pads with a crown on its head it appears fierce without losing what made the original getter click the getter beam now fires from a crystal atop its head as opposed to the chest hole of the original the only issue with dragon's design is its pants section looks a bit like a yellow diaper this time which is a tad on the unfortunate side ghetterliger and poseidon are very similar in appearance together 2 and 3 respectively but with the same fresh redesign of dragon get her liger looking a tad bulkier than get her two and get her poseidon swapping out the tank wheels for legs ishikawa's designs in geturgy are pretty solid both geder and the hiyaki beasts look great though i will say i slightly prefer the designs of the previous mekosaurus they were just a tad more odd looking which i think gave them more personality some of the hiyaki beasts still look great of course i also generally prefer the more devilish look of the original ghetto robo like i said g is great but clown diaper thankfully ishikawa's artwork takes a subtle step up in g from dramatic pitch black shading far more intense line work sprawling cityscapes and more dynamic stark panels all around ghetto robo g's panels just have a sense of impact that passes up the original there's also some far less janky character faces and another welcome change is character proportions the boys are rocking more anatomically correct builds that are represented more consistently as for the hijacking empire bry's design is sick he looks rightfully intimidating with his big ass oxhorns and crazy mane and there's also general hitler ishikawa's writing in gedergy is about the same as the original he brings the same energy and wit to his writing that made the original such a fun read and once again he kills it on how he illustrates his fights switching things up with a focus on moment to moment set pieces as opposed to getter versus monster battles all the time with one of the highlights being a set piece in the tallest skyscraper in japan ending in ryoma pulling off one of the best stunts of his career ryoma and hayato haven't changed much as characters since the first series ryoma showed signs of physically recovering from the originals finale with the scars on his face though he stopped showing signs of any emotional pain the ending might have left him in hayato's backstory and relationship with his former army are elaborated on quite a bit which makes for a hell of an opening arc to g but it doesn't really flesh out hayato much more as a character it would have been great if we had gotten to see a more sensitive serious side to these characters though unfortunately that would have to wait till later entries there's one other missed opportunity in g and that's the team's new third member benkei benkei to put it bluntly lacks in the personality department he's a fun jokester but he doesn't have much of a speaking role which is strange for a member of the getter team he's got a few standout moments but you can tell ishikawa was really just using him as a cheaper way of filling in musashi's role he might be lacking in g itself but in later entries and adaptations he'd definitely be fleshed out quite a bit one place where g really pulls through though is in its phenomenal finale it goes all out in an explosive surprising and just batshit insane final act being built off of one big reference to crichton's andromeda strain and even stumbling its way into the lost city of atlantis g's final act really sells it for me and it's something i'm not gonna spoil in full as it's one hell of an experience that's worth seeing unfold on your own the only downside to it is it's all over a bit fast and the hijacking empire dips before you really get to know what their proper motivation was beyond we want the earth too thankfully these issues would be addressed in ghetto g's get a robo saga re-release which remastered and extended the final battle as well as added additional chapters that connected the hijacking empire better to future events ghetto robo g is a wild extremely short ride that sends off the story of get a robo in style though it unfortunately misses the mark in some aspects you could pretty much tell ishikawa was out of ideas for the series at this point and just wanted to wrap things up if this had actually ended up being the finale of getarobo like it was originally planned to the series would certainly still deserve its legacy status though it wouldn't be a masterpiece it would just be a fun very brief and creative mecha series that helped launch the genre forward and introduced one of his most important concepts gedergy is certainly the weakest entry of the manga despite still being entertaining ishikawa made small strides forward with his artwork here though in terms of story it's a somewhat abrupt finale that doesn't really challenge its cast or do anything particularly new this is all the more interesting when i say that toei's ghetto robo-g anime is actually pretty great and is a huge step up from its predecessor right from the first episode some immediate improvements are noticeable from characters actually having proper shading applied to them to everybody suddenly being buff look at these boys look at the size of these kings and most importantly the animation on display here is seriously fantastic a lot of the time this is mainly thanks to toei bringing on some of the ara's best animators to work on the show such as the monolith yoshinori kannada action sequences in g just pop and finally give the show some occasional chances to match up with ichikawa's fights outside of that episodes have far better pacing and make really good room for character development ryoma is still tragically boring here but kamiya gets a good chance to show off his strong ass yell with the new finishing attack shine spark [Applause] hayato continues to get some excellent character moments and episodes dedicated to him there's also been a really nice change in his characterization he's not a completely smug cool guy at all times anymore he shows a much wider range of emotions all the experiences he has both negative and positive leave a real impact on him g solidifies hayato is the most complex character in toei's anime michael also gets some really great play here with some equally cool moments of her own she really gets to show off her more empathetic side and she proves that she's a great member of the getter team but aside from the already existing cast the biggest star of ghetto g is benkei while his manga counterpart is a bit of a 50 50 musashi replacement anime benkei gets plenty of time to shine a ton of the episodes are even dedicated to him and actually give him a lot of development he's given plenty of dialogue and actually feels like a worthy presence here being the most genuinely lovable and down-to-earth guy in the show he provides a warm and relaxed presence that was seriously lacking this is a man who cruises through life and knows how to crack a few good jokes along the way he's a totally different beast than musashi and definitely earns his place his theme music also reflects his chill attitude and matches up with his baseball themed design it's pretty clear that ben kay was more of toei's baby as opposed to ishikawa's the fact that he's such a well-handled character in this show proves it g also features some way more interesting scenarios per episode thanks to a slightly switched up writing staff episodes dealing with topics of prejudice what friendship really means dealing with grief oh my god bro that damn dog episode and a [ __ ] clown episode bruh this [ __ ] is freaky there's even an episode that warns you about the dangers of simping and i'm not talking about the fake definition of symp that everybody just throws around for no damn reason i'm talking like the actual dictionary definition of simp do not settle for mediocre [ __ ] on top of a wider episode variety the show has stellar direction and genuinely beautiful shots the dialogue all around is just better too with some great conversations that almost match up with the quality of ishikawa's banter geturgy is just solid improving on the original show's formula without changing it up too hard for it to feel alien it's still a 70s toy commercial but that's not a bad thing at all like i said earlier especially when it has this much care put into it getuji has a rock-solid finale too that i think is even better than its manga counterpart it made me realize how much i actually cared about the anime's cast and it was kind of sad to say goodbye to them after all this time i've watched the entirety of both of the 70s getter shows and really this finale made it feel like a truly worthwhile experience i really think toei's getter g is the first truly great animated entry in the series but much like its predecessor it hasn't been subbed officially so once again you know what to do if you want to watch it beyond getter and get her g toei also animated three crossover films with other dynamic pro robots all three of them are basically just ultra refined tv episodes with way higher budgets and all three are worth checking out especially bigger and dizer movie which is a series that would get a huge visual shout out and get her of armageddon beyond its immediate success toei's getter g would find a mini legacy of its own nadesco featured the biggest love letter imaginable to it with its anime within an anime geeky ganger 3 which nails the look of 70s toei anime and perfectly recreates a lot of toei getter's quirks outside of japan ghetto robo g's anime would be the first entry in the series to be localized it would launch under the american version of the machinder toy line in the 70s titled shogun warriors even though getter g wouldn't be released under the name geter g instead the toys would just use slightly modified form names as opposed to the title of getter the shogun warrior's brand saw some success though it didn't last too long the series received some mediocre tie-in comics but the only form that really exists in nowadays is nostalgia baiting tie-ins like this shirt the brand was definitely a bit of a fumble but mattel's final attempt at making the series take off would happen in the early 80s when in collaboration with jim terry productions they would license five classic toei series grandizer dangard starzinger guy king and geter g as force five which would air on different tv stations on the east coast with ghetto g going by star avengers i have a vhs set of this [ __ ] and look at this mess first off this smells sus as hell so it's probably not a good thing i own it but spaced out japanimation come on that's classic obviously this is a repackaging from a later release but it's still the same show let me just pop in the star avengers tape to shove this off you know how it is you know what you don't know what's going on you already know there we go hey you guys are working hard huh we're getting ready for martial arts tournament at the end of the month well we'll see you there in the meantime narrow road for both of us you'll have to step aside bro they call bank a foul tip in this show the voice acting is also so quiet i can't even hear it half the time and they credit it as a go in a guy series with no mention of ishikawa this is a hilarious case of early localization but i gotta give it credit for being the [ __ ] i ever came to the west even in a butchered form like this shirt concluding in both its manga and tv series both taway and ishikawa would say well sure for the time being as both the studio and ishikawa moved on to other projects getter would receive a separate adaptation by mitsuru hiruta in 1974. aside from that ishikawa himself would pen more child friendly get a robo mini chapters called get a robo-juvenile alongside the run of the main manga ishikawa wasn't the only artist who provided for these juvenile chapters though aichi saito gosaku ota mitsuru hiruta steel jeg creator tatsui yasuda and akimoto shigeru would all provide their own getarobo juvenile chapters in other kids magazines though this would conclude alongside the manga as well with both ishikawa and toei moving on poppy and bandai would still produce toys in the series but for all intensive purposes ghetto robo was over the ihikawa's career was just getting [Music] started [Music] in the 15 years following ghetto robo's conclusion ishikawa would go through a bit of a personal renaissance completely overhauling his art style and creating his second biggest franchise and a ton of mini projects this renaissance would begin immediately after geturobo g in 1975 with the extremely violent maju sensen essentially ishikawa's take on devil man it follows the story of shinichi a young man on a quest for revenge against his scientist father and his 12 colleagues who five years ago tried to genetically modify shinichi and his mother into human animal hybrids with shinichi surviving and assimilating his mother's abilities he chases down these 13 scholars equipped with the soul of a lion bear and eagle melded to him the story from there unravels him to a conspiracy involving the resurrection of jesus and the coming armageddon this is a very very violent series of some of ishikawa's most striking artwork yet going even harder on how he renders character faces for some truly comedic and terrifying expressions some of the artwork on display in maju-sensen is downright abstract with the most impressive page as ishikawa rendered in the 70s the series is graphic as hell and treads into some pretty disturbing territory but the fantastic dynamic artwork in gorgeous backgrounds keeps you engaged and i would recommend machu sensing if it hadn't ended on a cliffhanger its run and shown in captain was cut very short leaving it only at two volumes and that's really a shame because visually it's the best thing ishikawa drew in the 70s but with that said major sensing is still pretty decent if you want a slightly more complete feeling version of the actual story there is a gorgeous three episode 1990 ova directed by shinji yoga that expands on certain elements from the manga and completely reworks the ending in a more complete feeling form and seeing shinichi's brutality rendered out in a beautifully animated form makes it a worthwhile watch but only the first episode has actually been subbed so you might be [ __ ] out of luck without reading the manga to give context anyway years later in 2003 kenshi meijimo would direct an anime original sequel called major sensing the apocalypse it's bad very bad do not watch the show nanamizuki is in it that does not make it good this show went in and out of my mind immediately i actually forget what happens and i watched all 13 episodes this is not an alternative for the manga it is a very bad original sequel ishikawa himself would actually pen his own sequel in 2004 called shinsetsu majisensen this sequel series has never been translated but you can find the scans online raw one day i hope to see it fully translated because some of the concepts here are quite wild after machu sensan's cancellation the late 70s and early 80s would see ishikawa take on a ton of mini projects a handful of these being collaborations with other writers from 5001 yakuza awards written by gongai's brother yasutaka nagai to southern cross kid written by dirty pair creator haruka takachiho to the slightly longer four volume semeden another collaboration with masaki tsuji and of course a ton of works written by gonagai in all of these cases ichikawa was the illustrator but he also got to do a few manga of his own such as orika soji a historical piece based on the life of the titular swordsman ishikawa even got to create a children's anime in the form of saibot robachi a series in which he did the original pitch and character designs for it's a cute little children's comedy series with some very dynamic pro designs but ishikawa's involvement ends there it actually got localized in america as robbie the rascal but with the 80s kicking into high gear and all of ishikawa's mini projects and collaborations coming and going he would shift his entire focus to creating a brand new original series that would entirely reshape his identity as an artist as well as exploring a far more ambitious interwoven narrative that spanned time space and beyond into the metaphysical this new saga would be an anthology series built off of the four main manga ishikawa wrote throughout the 80s made up of 1980s tiger of 5000 light years 1987's kyomu senshi miroku and jaki obakuretsu and 1990's horror mecha series skull killer jackie o a decade later in 1997 these four series would be re-released in a cohesive completed work aside from these four main series this new release would also include four additional side stories two of which were short stories ishikawa had written in the 80s and 90s the cosmic horror strange living dimension dogara and the dogura war chronicles as well as taking his 1994 manga new rasheman and its bonus chapter the black magic of koji kashin to go even further beyond this already immense effort ishikawa would write anthology exclusive bonus chapters that expanded the story even more this new ultimate release would go under the title kyomusenki the void war chronicles kyomusenki is kenishikawa's second biggest series behind getter and the strides ishikawa made in the 80s with these four respective works would feed directly into how he wrote the next chapter in the getter saga the finalized 1997 release of the series is considered the definitive way of experiencing it though for about five years only the first volume of the 2000s re-release had been fan translated the translations only started up again as recently as this january and it's going to be quite a while before the new translation is completed the rest is raw only and pretty hard to find it's far easier to find each of these manga and their separate original releases as opposed to the kyomusanki version though all of those releases also have not been translated and the short stories as well as the entirety of jakki obakuretsu aren't available anywhere online being a western ishikawa fan is true suffering because let me tell you the one volume available of kyoumusenki is [ __ ] incredible the first volume covers two of the 90s bonus chapters a little bit of tiger of 5000 light years and the first volume of kyomu senshi miroku as well as finding time to slip in a new rashuman interlude it follows the intergalactic conflict between the imperial buddhist army and a mysterious seemingly extraterrestrial threat this battle is set in confucian era 14276 aka the big future before cutting back to japan in 1615 the final year of the sengoku period where the story of kyomu senshi miroku begins miroku follows the story of well miroku a young ninja who must put a stop to the plans of the evil sanada yukimura and his 10 braves before they can resurrect a mysterious metallic beast called the dragon this setup and some of myroku's early training are all the first translated volume covers but leaving off at this incomplete point left me unsatisfied so to see it all through to the end i decided to import it from japan and while with my very very limited understanding of japanese i was only able to gather smidgens of the story i was still mostly able to piece together what the main themes of the narrative are by restructuring all these manga together as one story ishikawa tied the series into different buddhist doctrines specifically the more contemporary definition of dependent origination that events are always occurring in a parallel manner and all parts of our existence are constantly in flux the story takes this very literally as all of ishikawa's artwork through different time periods bleeds together on a single page remember this is 15 years of manga combined together with additional content added in the late 90s as well when his art was at its absolute peak i can't even begin to describe how incredible some of these pages are by reading kyomusenki you get to experience the growth in ishikawa's art style over time and it creates for a truly amazing experience tiger 5000 light years feels like a send-off to his 70s artwork but featuring the highest level of mechanical detail yet his style would then more throughout the 80s into something completely different but still somewhat recognizable thinning out his lines with a focus on finer detail and entirely redefining how he illustrates both faces mechanical objects and clothing ishikawa's artwork in the 80s shows a clear refinement and his ability to render brutal fight scenes improved tenfold conflicts remain intense and incredibly fast with fantastic panel layout that makes everything a breeze to follow he also got a lot better at rendering out graphic imagery here some of the shots in his 80s comics are brutal even more than the work seen in major sensing and getter he also experimented a lot in illustrating instances of assimilation and disturbing transformations ishikawa dove head first into body horror in this era humans melding and combining with machines melting into new and crazy shapes it's some really incredible stuff on both a conceptual and visual level and it would later be applied together to great effect i'm really happy that after years of being in limbo happy scans has picked up the scan nations again it's gonna be wonderful to finally read this series completed in english once it's finally done let me tell you for a fact it's absolutely going to be worth it to wait for this translation to be finished if you want to check out kyo museenki but if you can't wait there is an alternate complete way of experiencing miroku's story in its own form and that is a solid six episode ova from studio animate and jc staff directed by yoshio takaruchi titled kyomusenshi miroku and released in 1989. only the first three episodes of this ova follow the manga at all and sadly they cut out quite a few of the more disturbing and graphic moments some of the really ethereal stuff that goes down is just completely absent and the remaining three episodes of this ova just quickly dive into their own ninja action only slightly touching up on the buddhist-based themes of the original manga and by cutting the more interesting elements of the manga the ova is not perfect but it's still a quality short ova with some great music and fantastic animation it's just a lot of fun ninja action if you're looking for that and it is a complete story in this form it's just not the same story as the manga it just sucks that such a cool saga has never been brought over to the west officially it might be due to how aggressively eastern the core of its story is but hey i'm sure there's a ton of people who are down for experiencing one of ishikawa's most seminal works in full i know i am for sure ishikawa was killing it in this era with a bunch of original series of his own but his other biggest experiments throughout the 80s would be some crazy ambitious adaptations of very famous japanese novels with the first being the 1987 adaptation of chigoro kaionji's heaven and earth and the second being a very very loose adaptation of futara yamada's famous makai tensho the story of the famous warrior jube yagu battling an army of demons following the resurrection of amakusashiro ishikawa's version of this story would opt to remove a ton of characters from the novel and take a full shift into a dark action-packed samurai romp with some very grotesque body horror and some [ __ ] insane fight scenes i highly recommend reading this adaptation it's completely different from the novel but ishikawa's version of makai tensho is metal as [ __ ] if you want to see the resurrected demonic corpse of miyamoto musashi battle it out against a gunsword wielding jube yagyu this is the manga for you it's very clear that it was illustrated by ishikawa in the 80s through his artwork but it wouldn't actually see an official release till 1997. with the 80s wrapping up and ishikawa on a roll all on his own toei animation was busy working on a mazinger z reboot series with gona guy but this project was going through development hell at the time with the project seemingly going nowhere toei would switch lanes and decide that the series would be a new ghetto robo titled get a robo-j ishikawa would be asked to return to the franchise he left 15 years ago and write a coinciding manga entry he would agree after some thought and publish his manga and shonen captain ishikawa's manga would be a direct sequel to get a robo-g set 15 years after the amount of time this hiatus had lasted while toe animation's tv series was a full-on reboot that had nothing to do with the getter franchise beyond its name this would lead to an interesting situation where toei would create the black sheep of the franchise in a mixed bag of a show while ichikawa would create the best entry of the manga yet and what in my opinion is one of the greatest manga of all time the name would be finalized to get her robo go and toei's tv show will begin airing on february 11 1991 with ishikawa's manga following a few days later the next chapter of the getter saga was beginning and it would change the franchise forever [Music] in a change in order i'd like to discuss the get or go anime before i suck the manga's metaphorical dick dry i would describe toei's get her go as beautiful but a bit lacking go is in fact one of the best looking shows that toy animation has ever produced and it would serve as the second big mech series after ex-kaiser that legendary animator yutaka nakamura would work as key animator on and he has very little recollection of actually working on the show and wonders if it was good or not at all he forgets which is honestly pretty telling go follows a brand new trio of pilots go ichimanji shotachibana and guy he's got no last name in the show but his name is guy dido in the manga together the three of them pilot ghettorobo go in the fight against professor rando and his army of metal beasts get it like the metallic beasts of mazinger because this was supposed to be mazinger first off i've gotta say gergos design is fantastic with the only real difference between the show and manga variants being these goofy propellers on the back which i honestly quite like what else can i say they give the design a unique look get or go is one of ishikawa's best designs it's my third favorite in the whole series moving away from the silly mashed the ships together design of the first two getters and instead applying some actual contemporary mechanical design into it gutter go's three get machines actually look like jets instead of weird shapes that melt into each other with legitimate logic applied to the gatai sequence that brings getter into the world of contemporary mech design without any of its forms losing their distinctly getter attributes from its generally similar shapes to its wild three-piece color palette ishikawa did a bang-up job creating a new getter that fit into 90's mech design sensibility but i'll praise the overall design and why it works more when i get to the manga the other design work in the series be it from the metal beasts that the characters are also quite pleasant but the characters themselves appear a bit generic without much aside from their hair to set them apart character designer jojoshima certainly did a fine job these character designs could have looked far worse but the nonishikawa designs which is pretty much everything aside from getter itself and most of the villains don't really stand out all too well one of the stronger elements of the show is the direction especially during the action scenes hiroki shibata definitely did an all-around solid job directing the show fights have a solid punch to them and are usually very well animated the whole show also features a very pretty color palette everything pops out without getting too oversaturated though those naturally bright color palettes were typical of toei mecha series even all the way in the 90s also the show has some killer openings and endings which i can't play here for copyright reasons but with most of these positives out of the way i have to talk about what makes the show somewhat lackluster the story and characters here don't really do much for me everything is very plain be it from the fairly phoned and voice acting to the just standard situations they're put in akira kamiya returns to the series to voice guy and i couldn't even tell it was him everything is just that plain though on rare occasions in the show something [ __ ] insane might happen that catches you way off guard though it's almost hard to recommend sitting through it for these crazy moments because its opening act moves at a snail space this beginning segment is a drag and there isn't even a gata sequence till episode 11. yep episode 11 of this combining robot show is the first time they combine but thankfully the anime does pick up later with the introduction of the mid-season anime exclusive upgrade super getter go yeah it looks pretty good a nice changing color palette a cool ass chess piece it's cool it's a cool design this midway point also comes with the introduction of the new anime original villain naruki who fits the show far better than professor rondo does but even with its more interesting midway point the show is still sadly fairly boring set pieces certainly get better but the show always feels slightly off it's a very well made show that's for sure but it doesn't feel like it really has a personality of its own and that's honestly not really its fault as it can be chalked up to being a cobbled together hybrid of a scrap mazinger show in whatever designs ishikawa had prepared for the manga in general i still think getterable go is an alright show it's just a very forgettable one but it's still one of the major parts of this franchise so i still need to pay my respects to it get or go is only sub proper in italian i watched most of it raw for this video and that was honestly far easier to follow than the currently available english subtitles which are hilarious and give the show way more personality but they're also complete gibberish anonymous russian rippers really didn't give a [ __ ] about this one and they only subbed up to episode 10. also for some reason the show's international title is a gold bang i'm not making this [ __ ] up look although the anime was alright if forgettable the manga is really where getter shined as a series in this era get a robo ghost at the franchise on its path to truly being one of the greatest manga of all time and i don't say that lightly go took getter and everything it represented and flipped it on its head for its most mature beautifully crafted and daring entry yet that not only shook the foundations of the series but recontextualized all previous events set 16 years after the events of ghetto robo-g the series is set up with an immensely strong high school athlete and professional slacker go ichimonji being recruited by an older scarred hayato to battle against the evil professor rando and his army of metal beasts go is joined by the already skilled fighter shotachibana and the kind-hearted mechanic guy dido as the war to prevent rondo and his army from conquering the earth rages on the ghetto team hits alaska where the center of the battle is being waged here an army of super robots each representing a separate nation come together to take rondo out ghetto robo go is an intentional retread of previous ground in its first half for multiple reasons not only to make its eventual second half more surprising but also to serve as an excuse for ishikawa to flex on us with how much he'd evolved as an artist since getter's last outing the artwork in get a robo go is incredible i already praised getter go's design but to get more specific this robot isn't powered by ghetto rays it's powered by plasma energy it's an expensive piece of military equipment as opposed to an experimental metal superhero because of this it appears more grounded in its general design and how it's presented with its horns toned way down far cleaner mechanical seams and a general sense of weight previously unseen in the franchise the fights in go while still very fast paced have far more believable heft and impact to them getter go can get ripped to shreds far more easily than the previous two with every punch it throws or missile it shoots having a real sense of weight to it as well it's crazy special moves get thrown out far less than before and i love this about go it's able to keep fights intense in a totally new way by redirecting how action scenes work this more grounded militaristic approach to design is reflected on every other piece of equipment and robot in the series from massive ground treading battleships to jets and gargantuan aircrafts there's a clear focus ishikawa put in making every visible object and piece of machinery and getter go feel like it has a purpose despite the wacky sci-fi setting all the international robots have a distinct look to them too with a lot of personality packed in each one from the american silva being a giant stealth fighter that turns into a towering behemoth to the canadian t520 just being well a giant rolling log there's never a dull design present in go rondo's army of metal beasts also all look fantastic taking on a bio-organic look that melds flesh and metal together for some occasionally outright terrifying designs making them feel like actual threats as opposed to goofy cannon fodder and rondo's base the vega zone just look at this thing and that's nothing compared to the background details and smaller machinery detail is the word to use because pages and objects are packed with small touches from scratches to individual knobs and screws to every single employee in the military base scrambling to their stations at any given moment there's a real sense of tangibility in gergo that hasn't been seen in the series up to this point ishikawa had certainly taken the lessons he had taught himself while working on many of kyomusenki's entries and applied them here because when getergo is a looker it's really a looker the characters all look great too with ishikawa's new art style leading to far more detailed profiles and clothing while not treading away from his goofy ass facial expressions and of course there's plenty of his signature intense shading all over the place unfortunately with this style of rendering character faces in this era some things can get a little odd looking there's a few janky way out of whack faces in some panels and when it comes to characters physical builds sometimes their bodies will just change in size from page to page proportions on human characters are an issue here at times but as the manga goes on those issues begin to subside as he continues to adapt to his newer style but an element from his artwork and beyond that i love are these big wide open expressions that he renders out funny little uvula included but all this praise for the visual aspects are only half the story to really appreciate get her go we have to dig into its narrative strengths and man the writing and get her go is strong with a few very small exceptions goichimonji is arguably the best protagonist in the series going from an initially stubborn assat who thinks everyone involved with hayato is insane to someone who's willing to risk his own life and reputation in his country to do the right thing there's a slow believable evolution of his character as the horrors of the ongoing war and their emotional impact on everyone involved spurs him to action and pushes his good heart to the surface he's a naturally charismatic and loudest hell dude who's driven by doing what he feels is the right thing and speaking his mind whenever he sees fit he's still subject to fits of anger that cloud his judgment but his ability to win those around him over and grapple with traumatic situations in his own unique and very silly at times ways helps him stand out from ryoma before him he's all around a great protagonist and a perfect gateway back into getter's universe and he would say just great if it weren't for the incredible second half of get or go which elevates his character to a whole nother level and i'll get back to how this happens in a couple of minutes because next up i gotta talk about shotachi bana the daughter of getter goes co-creator dr tachibana and in many ways hayato's disciple show is one tough as nails fighter she's introduced as a commanding no-nonsense force who's dead set on stopping random no matter what the cost she serves us both go and the reader's introduction to this new era while undercutting her seemingly constantly serious vibe with a solid witty sense of humor knowing exactly how to flip between light and serious depending on the mood on top of all of this her past directly involves dr ronda giving her a personal vendetta in the fight aside from being the only woman to pilot get her in the manga she brings a lot to the table with her dedication to the battle at hand and her laser focus be it communication with her teammates to her combat prowess much like go show isn't without her own holdups she values her family and friends greatly so when she learns that her own dead brother has been resurrected as one of rondo's soldiers she begins to carry an emotional weight with her while still trying her damn this to fight in this war her struggle is serious and her ability to push through it gives her an immensely strong will that's very respectable though she unfortunately gets pretty shafted in the second half of the series with her character arc really beginning and ending in the first half guy dido is the sweetest boy alive i love this man he's a genuinely wonderful guy that channels a similar energy to that of toes benke but in his own unique way watching him geek out over machinery is wonderful and his ability to form quick friendships with pretty much anyone makes him the most pleasant character in the entire series but he's still a getter pilot and you know what that means if you [ __ ] with him he'll come for your ass and go book wild the getter team here is the most grounded in the series as they feel like real albeit unusually strong teens forced to fight in a war they may not even win they lose some fights show genuine vulnerability and come across even afraid at times they are not the superhuman freaks the original trio was and it makes them all the more distinct while occupying the same body brain and heart layout they even apply some real verbal communication which reinforces that military aesthetic aside from the getter team hayato is still very much himself but taking up the position sao toma used to hold even adopting the same victory at any cost mindset though it's created a palpable sense of exhaustion and even doubt in himself and his leadership skills which becomes all the more clear as we learn about his past involving rondo and eventually a far darker part of his life in the second half of the story he still rocks through every scene with the same level of skill and slight twinge of madness we're used to from him just in a slightly less self-assured package seeing him in this leadership role really feels earned but somewhat ironic this guy attempted murder on a politician and now he's a government man which causes him to grapple between the boy he once was and the man he now is will he fully let go of his old self and stay in this leadership role or keep at least the spirit of his youth get her go being the longest entry of the saga with a focus on international camaraderie means it gets filled to the brim with fun one note side characters from the regular frontline troops out there fighting the war to the international pilots who definitely don't get as much dialogue but what's there certainly sticks out most of them getting some great banter with go the big star of these side characters though has to be the comedically racist american schwartz this guy is ridiculous being written as the biggest bigoted [ __ ] imaginable those japs they feel pretty brave when they're on their island but as soon as they come out they're all cowards you really hate them huh damn right they're the ones i hate the most then it's the blacks then the mexicans there should only be whites we're the ones who created everything and then the japs stole everything i'll never forgive those bastards his rivalry with go is hilarious and makes for a solid subplot about him realizing hey maybe this racism thing is kind of bad what the hell even if this stems from the fact that he got horny for a japanese woman i guess ishikawa predicted andy twitter years in advance god damn he was a visionary i also love that he's not really treated as redeemable at all we only really get to see him slowly start to let go of his prejudices and not fully he remains an unlikable [ __ ] just one that's slowly realizing that his worldview might be entirely incorrect which is honestly way more realistic and believable than a character suddenly going i'm not racist anymore guys between pages rondo is still a bit lacking as a villain but the twisted methods he employs make him at least as fun as gorham bry before him the real star for me in terms of villains though is his right hand man the scheming recession a truly slimy and manipulative bastard that steals the show whenever he's on a page these are villains who don't hold back at all they'll threaten governments with blowing up half of their country in exchange for military supplies they bring a sense of immediate danger to the conflict and in general make for some solid villains and it's not just the characters writing all around and get her go has taken a massive step up especially in the dialogue department issue how will further sharpen the way he writes conversations to make for far more natural interactions go and hayato in particular have some solid exchanges the two clash ideologically on almost all fronts with go's desire to pull off risky maneuvers and help as many people as possible and hayato's hesitation and drive to play by his own rule book a rulebook that may cost many lives but one that he believes will lead to victory the japanese government is relying on him and he feels it's his duty to take care of the situation at any cost the conversations these two have are really amazing and feature some of my favorite dialogue in the entire franchise they have a great commander and troop dynamic that hasn't been seen in the series up to this point and it brings a sense of believable conflict to their relationship the interactions between the getter team are also very grounded and real feeling initially not being able to work with each other particularly well to evolving into a great group of friends it's a little fast pace compared to some series but with goal only being seven volumes there's only so much time that this trio really gets to know each other before the second half and the time used really fleshes them out quite well when i said that they feel like actual teenagers earlier i really meant it they're a group of kids that struggle to get along but eventually find common ground and as they begin to finally speak up for each other and back each other up it really feels like they've earned the bond that they've formed there's a real tension and drama to a lot of the conversations in the series so some comedic moments are needed to create breathing room and go is honestly hilarious i mentioned before how great schwartz and goes exchanges are as well as some of hayato's fantastic snarky dialogue but beyond even the dialogue every single comedic scene in get her go flows extremely well the getter goes first half is so so solid it's the perfect way to bring back a long dormant series with the most intense fights and best characters yet as well as detail in the machinery never before seen in the series it's a damn good sequel that then transforms into a perfect one once the second act hits i'm not going to spoil all the events that happen in the conclusion of get a robo go as it's something i think everybody needs to experience for themselves but the basic setup alone and some of the themes the series touches up on i will address here as they're what took getter robo from a cornerstone of early mecca to a masterpiece in its own right if you don't even want to hear that you can skip here after an intense and successful battle to push back rondo's army the ghetto team goes their separate ways with show leaving to help the american army and go and guy on route back to japan to assist hayata with a massive threat of bombs that rondo has placed around the country goh has recently had nightmares involving the ghetto robo this has put him on edge for weeks and it's beginning to affect his focus after meeting hayato's assistant kay bro why the [ __ ] do you look like that the two see firsthand the casualties japan has suffered since this battle started hayato is at his limit with the japanese government relying on him to finish this fight and save the country the methods he's had to employ to counter the enemy have drained his soul this leaves him with one final very risky option his plan is to introduce the two ghetto team members to the only weapon that has a chance of properly stopping this coming threat for good with this we finally returned to the saotome institute now in ruins and overgrown with foliage hyato introduces gogai and k to the machine that would change this franchise forever shin getter robo originally going by the title of true getter robo its name would be changed to shin gedorobo in all the following iterations thanks to its feature in the fourth super robot wars game a few years later shin getter is one of my favorite mecha designs ever with a simplistic cutback red and white color palette only cut through by the green glow of the ghetto rays powering it to its tall powerful shoulders to its flat threatening face to its giant bat wings and especially its soul-piercing eyes everything about shin getter is perfect it looks like a god damn demon and that's basically what it is with its introduction the story begins to take some incredible turns with us learning exactly why hayato opted to ditch getare's entirely on get her go she shin get a robo's getaway output is endless giving it an unlimited potential to utilize the very energy that caused humanity's evolution to begin in the first place and its use of that power is catastrophic shooting around at speeds unseen before and leveling entire mountain regions as it physically begins to evolve itself its power is terrifying and unmatched and ishikawa expertly communicates that power through some of the best panels he's ever drawn perfectly illustrating the impact and speed that shin getter has when it does something as simple as move but it's not only its combat prowess that makes it so special it's what it represents for the series itself with shin gutter's introduction we're introduced to the true power of the get arrays and the fact that they'll drive those who are over exposed to it to the mental brink for some that rink is far too much and for others it slowly erodes away at them but for some it brings them a sense of clarity as they achieve a sort of enlightenment giving themselves into the getter and letting go of any fear of mortality the series begins to ask the question of what exactly evolution is why are humans driven to cooperate and work with each other why do we fight and what's really our purpose on this planet why did the gatorade select humanity specifically to evolve the way it did just what kind of beings are the ghetto rays are they simply the energy source powering ghetto robo are they an entity all unto themselves giving a conscience to these machines shouldn't get a robo seemingly having a mind and personality of its own the final act of ghetto robo go brings everything full circle shocking revelations come one after another as the past present and future collide with the fate of the world itself riding in the balance and the cast of characters you come to know and love being pushed to a literal awakening to the truth of the universe itself and being forced to grapple with said awakenings taking elements from all of his previous work especially skull killer jackie o including its visual depictions of assimilation goes appearance and its hybrid between man and machine creating some seriously disturbing visuals at times ishikawa answers all questions as the story of ghetto robo concludes in an ambitious beautiful and terrifying all-out finale that will leave you thinking about it for days after the final three volumes of ghetto robo go make for one of my favorite conclusions in fiction reading this for the first time had me reflect on everything the series had been up to this point and turned gutter robo into one of my favorite manga period ghetto robo go is just incredible it takes the series central theme of camaraderie and human spirit and casts it in a far darker light while still being true to that core it's a perfect sequel that paved the way for all the amazing getter stories that were soon to come ghetto bogo actually would receive a western release in the form of viz media's old comic book releases of manga volumes it was called vengerobo over here and released in seven issues that covered up to the end of volume one yep that's it this is the one and only time an ishikawa manga would be localized in any capacity but despite no complete official release you should still really go ahead and read get a robo-go there's a reason it's debatably the best entry what makes this even more baffling is that ishikawa would keep improving beyond this point because even after go there were more getter stories for ishikawa to tell [Music] do all right here's some aggressive tonal whiplash ghetto robo go would again serve as the conclusion of the series and it was a beautiful note to end off on ishikawa would spend the rest of the early 90s cranking away at a ton of other side projects including two off-the-wall adaptations of snk's fatal fury and samurai spirits both of them are definitely worth reading if you're a fan of snk's characters though they only loosely follow the game's plots and just kind of do whatever they feel like but it's better that way because it lets ishikawa do his thing he'd even do the character designs for the ova adaptation of falcom's dragon slayer and of course he'd do some original manga too such as the alternate history mecha themed russo japanese war series gale beast machine corps 203 this series has just recently gotten its translation finished and it's definitely a fun quick read if you're looking for something light he'd also craft the hayen period epic makuhakenden which ran for five volumes making this another one of his longer series but much like a lot of his other work it has yet to be translated in any capacity when it came to collaborations around this time he'd worked with author baku yume makura to create the one-off action comic sukomuranzo ishikawa's artwork would continue to improve as he kept tackling new projects but after a period of contemplation on what he wanted to do next it hit him that he still had a desire to expand on ghetto robo's universe even further with the popularity of the super robot wars games at the time he looked to their iteration of get a robo this made him set his sights on a prequel to get a robo go set a few months after the events of get a robo-g explaining the origins of shin got a robo ryoma venkai and gheterjee's absence and the destruction of the saotome institute shin guetaroba would begin publication in 1996 and run for three years shouldn't get a robo is in many ways a borderline horror manga made up of a couple interconnecting anthology chapters covering short battles that the ghetto team has before eventually introducing the core conflict once an enemy seemingly from the future returns to earth in the past with its sights set on destroying the source of the ghetto robo in particular they oddly seem obsessed with destroying the getter dragon shin ghetto robo saotome's newest and strongest creation ends up at the center of this battle as shin gutter robo puts up a fight against this mysterious time travelling threat its insane getaway output begins to affect the ghetto team in saotome both physically and mentally shin guetarobo shows the former heroes of the series at their lowest exploring them from a brand new more nuanced lens it's a great way to have the g-trio back and thankfully time is taken here to improve benkei a lot by implementing some much-needed wit as well as elements of his personality from the toei version and addressing the elephant in the room that he really just is a musashi replacement this is done by giving him a somewhat modified version of musashi's initial character arc of i can prove myself but in a method that feels a little more cynical and desperate he feels deeply underappreciated by his colleagues and the methods he goes through to prove himself are quite extreme but unforgettable with his fate tying directly to the reason these mysterious invaders are so obsessed with the getter dragon he cements himself as a worthy character in the manga hayato throughout the series is beginning to forge his own path creating the first prototype of ghetto robo go and begin his journey down the path of the man he would become later in life but saotome here is honestly the most interesting part as his overexposure to the ghetto rays begins to deteriorate him both physically and mentally and it's quite upsetting to see the once proud genius scientist slowly become an off-putting scary and bumbling shell of his former self but the real focus of shin guetarobo and its downright cosmic horror story falls on ryoma as the ghetto rays begin to go wild and shin getter shows its true power ryoma starts to be haunted by visions of the future a future in which it getter in its most terrifying form yet has transformed into an army of machines on a quest to consume the universe itself with this force being led by the immensely powerful getter emperor a machine that shakes ryoma's fortitude and forces him on a journey of self-reflection this is a future he refuses to see become real and as the situation becomes more desperate he realizes that he needs to leave this automa institute for good separating himself from his friends and the getter to prevent this hell future from becoming reality he shows an immense level of growth and maturity here that adds a new layer of depth to his character that really proves how he's learned from his experience he's no longer the completely unhinged child he was in his past he's a grown man now and he's behaving as one with the specter of shin gutter robo haunting him at all times even outside of the cockpit he's driven to walk a new path in life shingerov's character writing is fantastic the conversations between ryoma hayato and saotome feel extremely personal with plenty of breathing room and some wonderfully laid out panels showing the growing distance between the once unshakeable bond this cast had hayato and ryoma's final conversation before the climax best reflects this reflecting on what their potential futures are and coming to an understanding of the different paths they're going to be walking in life the two wondering if the getter influenced these paths in the first place shouldn't getter's writing really is the most unique in tone asking questions if destiny is predetermined and if certain people are meant to drift apart it's beautifully written and contains a level of subtlety not seen in the series up to this point though the signature juvenile humor is still thrown in here for good measure on occasion alongside the fantastic writing is ishikawa's immaculate artwork shin is the most terrifying experimental entry in this regard as well wide shots and full page spreads filled the entire story with either massive sweeping shots of outer space filled with incredibly detailed planet dwarfing spaceships to the wide stunning vista of mount asama there's a level of spaciousness and breathing room in shin that wasn't present in any other entry of the series every single page of shin is beautiful with ishikawa's level of detail and machinery going even further than it did in go shouldn't get her 2 and 3 even get in on the action here both of which are basically sick as hell beefed up and far scarier redesigns of getter 2 and 3 respectively it's also just awesome to see the original ghetto robo and getter g get back in on the action seeing the old machines just duke it out in their classic style is an awesome throwback that leads to some fantastic fights and they look way more thick and sturdy in ishikawa's new art style everything here is just rendered with such a level of detail and focus that you want to drink in every single page character designs in ishikawa's work had also gone through another overhaul by this point with the shape of characters faces now being firm and rounded with detailed scratchy shading to give depth and small marks and imperfections everywhere adding a nice layer of grit all these little touches give his faces a strong mature look hair is also really damn detailed here and knowing how wild the hair in this series gets it must have been a pain to draw but man it paid off and yes even the funny little uvulas are here and way more often in humorous scenes he gives characters a very cartoonish appearance which contrasts super well with his new more detailed style the inconsistent proportions that were an issue in get or go have also faded away and somehow the cast got even more buff than they were in getter going g these are some beefy ass men who look like they can break you in a single punch but my favorite element in shin getter has to be its aforementioned panel layout beyond the shot composition i already praised there's plenty of pages that are just shin get a robo itself either just standing there or staring directly at you the reader it's as if schinger is a specter that even when not in the action is haunting and watching over every moment of the manga reinforcing the story's stressful bleak tone fights also reflect this now feeling more panicked and desperate than they ever have with shin gutter practically fighting with a mind of its own and sacrifices being made that adds some serious emotional weight to every moment shin getter is a story that's up for asking a lot of interesting questions in between its fight scenes how far there's a relationship between us and the machinery we've created actually go how much do our scientific advancements really matter if a giant machine god powered by the very energy that birthed us in the first place watches over our every move we are quite literally watching a machine consume and outgrow the humans that created it begging the question if humanity had any control over its own destiny in this universe at all it's an excellent companion piece to go's ending that expands upon the questions already asked there shin gurobo is a short but terrifying chapter of the saga and one that will push getter's ambitious ever-evolving nature even further it's an excellent read that's just as breathtaking as its predecessor and another knockout from ishikawa [Music] me [Music] [Music] in 1998 while shin ghettorobo was currently running for the 15th anniversary of bandai visual's emotion department bandai wanted to make a celebratory series as a bit of a cash blowout and guterroba would be chosen as the host for this celebration a bit of a retro throwback ova planned to celebrate the series at its best the series would be produced by the brand new animation studio brains base with giant robo and g gundam director yasuhiro imagawa set to write and direct the series the show would be a 13 episode ova and ishikawa would help promote the series with a prequel chapter a prequel radio drama would also be produced from this collaborative effort ghetto robo would receive its most popular adaptation to date and arguably still its best it would be titled change ghetto robo the last day of the world or shin get a robo armageddon in the west years ago a mysterious race of invaders called the invaders took over the moon in retaliation earth created the super robots with professor saltome's ghetto robo leading the pack after an intense battle the invaders were pushed back and all seemed well that was until a test drive of ghetto robo-g resulted in the death of saotome's daughter michiru driving the scientist to madness eventually in the midst of this madness satome would be found dead with ryoma being framed for his murder and arrested years later ryoma is set free when satome seemingly rises from the grave with the ambition to bring armageddon to humanity using his strongest creation yet shin get her dragon ghetto of armageddon takes no time for a drawn out setup and throws you right into the middle of the conflict following musashi and wait denke what's hiato doing over here why shikashima working with them what plan are they talking about what the hell is going on what's shin get her doing here why is that tommy back from the dead is that go in a test tube what the [ __ ] is happening this is the confusing but brilliant opening to get her of armageddon the first three episodes of the show are masterworks imagawa chose to write a story here that takes a ton of disparate narrative elements from the franchise and combine them into a hybrid story with plenty of its own original elements immediately confusing but intriguing long time fans as to what the hell is going on and throwing newcomers right into the frying pan all the dialogue remains cryptic from saotome and even hayato as the show practically taunts you to figure out the mysteries it's slowly setting up and as the concept of the earth itself de-evolving is brought into the fray it becomes even more complex the only thing cutting through all this confusion is ryoma and his constant screaming for answers as well as his journey to take revenge on saotome and those who framed him all while he pilots a beat up out of commission original getter robo this all comes to a head when two scientists named cohen and stinger come into the fray and cause a damn nuke to be launched in shin dragon's direction the resulting blast is so powerful that it covers nearly the entire earth then after these three episodes imagawa dipped from the production yielding his script for the series and taking any future plans with him we don't really know the details of the dispute that caused this and we likely never will imagawa refuses to talk about what actually happened but it sounds like it was a very unpleasant disagreement between him and the rest of the staff imagawa would later get to take his versions of these characters and put them in a manga it was titled guterrobo iboon try to remember hisashi matsumoto illustrated the series though the actual story of this three chapter series is unrelated to armageddon it's its own separate tale entirely featuring a new original getter unit called getter zero the problem with try to remember is it's very hard to find in any capacity it was never released as a tankobon or any alternate format it only ran as a series of bonus chapters in the super robot wars tribute magazine it's definitely one of the more obscure entries in the getter series but i still felt like it was worth a mention i guess that's a weird part of the getter franchise it really is something that you have to try to remember with imagawagon the project from episode four onwards was in uncertain condition this is when animator jun kawagoe would step up to the plate to direct the rest of the series with shinzo fujita and yoshifumi fukushima handling the new story for the remaining 10 episodes with kao going the director's seat and two new writers the series would carry on these remaining 10 episodes are set 13 years later in a post-apocalyptic future as we follow the new trio of benkei's adopted daughter k the artificial human go and guy who together pilot the recovered shin get a robo in an attempt to battle against the still kicking shin dragon before it triggers a final armageddon under kawagoe's direction a miracle had happened and this new storyline was able to pretty flawlessly meld itself into the setup imagawa had written the series is able to maintain a successfully told story despite a complete change in setting in focus though sadly some elements of imagawa story are lost forever the plot point of earth de-evolving and the initial true purpose of shin dragon and go's true origins are mysteries that are lost forever as well as the original origin of the invaders and the reason for hayato's betrayal of ryoma but fujita and fukushima were able to write a story that manages to answer most of these questions albeit in a way that was very different from what imagawa had planned the series ends up going back to the original 70s getters theme of camaraderie being our biggest strength in the face of all obstacles and honestly it works out far better than if the show had tried to squeeze in some of the more experimental concepts from later entries though smidgens of those elements are still here especially in the final act which creates its own interesting look at humanity's relation to the getter rays though it achieves this through a far more optimistic lens than ishikawa's work seeing the old gutter team torn apart by the dark past only for them to bounce back to that glorious brotherhood we know and love well accompanied by the story arc of a young new generation coming to terms with their own importance in securing humanity's future makes for a really engaging and fun ride the new wasteland setting also brings a very good opportunity to explore some of these new characters k was a pretty one-off character in the manga she definitely had some moments especially her interactions with go but she wasn't around long enough for us to really get to know her in armageddon she's basically the protagonist from episode four to thirteen a strong strong-willed slightly stubborn individual who's just as confused as the audience as to what the hell is going on k serves as our portal into the insanity unfolding on screen we're by her side through all the emotional beats and seeing her own backstory finally come into the picture is pretty satisfying if i'll admit a bit [ __ ] wild when it was actually revealed narumi hidaka brings a powerful but sweet inflection to her voice that helps emphasize all of her character traits as you can see she's close to her manga counterpart in name only she's totally her own character here which is the case with most of the cast in the ova benkei especially is completely different from every other iteration of him up to this point feeling like the most down to earth and normal human to ever hop into a getter he's a strong leader who's always pushing himself to do what's best for his troops and daughter his interactions with k haha get it k and ben k see it's actually clever why they did that show a real father-daughter connection that adds to both characters he's played by shozo izuku who emphasizes that strong fatherly aura i'd say this version of benkei is just as good as toei's seeing a more cynical older version of the character is really interesting but he still carries a kind loving undercurrent the man also goes all out when he needs to kicking as much ass as possible gohir is a tad quiet and reserved but certainly cares about the well-being of those around him his story really focuses on his direct ties to shin dragon and him connecting to the humans around him seeing their worth and learning that even if he's artificial he still has a good heart and he's still one of them and then he hops into shin getter and just goes buck [ __ ] wild with all out attacks and endless screaming again he's only really go in appearance and name and much like the rest of the cast works really well as his own original character tomoko suseki is an amazing voice actor and he kills it here bringing some amazing energy to every action scene but i'm pretty sure even if you've never seen the ova in full you know who the star is the character you've seen posted everywhere from screenshots to getter amvs or just a super robot worse ryoma nagare and armageddon is pretty much exactly the character you'd expect him to be bombastic and almighty this is exactly what 70s manga ryoma would look like on a quest for vengeance giving no shits at all and throwing himself at every obstacle it's the single most unrestrained version of the legendary mecca pilot yet just chewing the damn scenery every time he's on screen and carrying entire sequences on his back this version of ryoma is a [ __ ] blast that captures what makes the character so damn good in the first place just with his unstable nature cranked up another notch everything that works about ryoma is here and accounted for and god damn seeing a more manga accurate version of him finally animated is so so good his more human and emotional side is also highlighted here he's just a little bit too pissed at everything that's happened actually show it most of the time one of the coolest changes here is his design being directly based off of shinichi from maju sensen with some adjustments in color hell even some panels from maju-sensen are used as a direct basis for some of ryoma's amazing facial expressions hideo ishikawa is one of my favorite voice actors and he takes this role and just makes it there could not be a more perfect voice for the iconic pilot of getter ones [Music] [Applause] just a grade a performance that brings the character to life hayato here is also pretty manga accurate with an extra layer of slime and manipulation added on top to give him a real slick presence in the show aside from that much like ryoma everything i've said about the character in past segments applies here the original boys are super manga accurate and it's so awesome to see these dudes animated in this quality with voice acting this good naoya uchida becomes the definitive voice of hayato in this ova bringing that level of calm calculated speech with the twinge of unstable madness from the pages of the manga to life even musashi for his brief time in the spotlight here is totally on point and played incredibly by shinpachi tsuji who also happens to be my favorite musashi voice noticing a pattern here i do enjoy toei's original voice cast but man armageddons is just too stellar also guy is here and he's just guy pretty much plucked directly from the pages of get or go and dropped here sao toma here is incredible pretty much matching up with ryoma for scenery chewing this mad undead version of the character with a wild redesign is so goddamn fun to root against every scene he's in is a riot especially when him and ryoma are face to face mugihito really nails this version of saotome with some wonderful cheese he's devilishly evil and the perfect villain for this ova the rest of the supporting cast is great too from the mysterious cohen and stinger both of whom borrow their designs from major senses shot and barbier respectively to the ova's version of schwartz who's honestly just an [ __ ] instead of a racist which you know is a lot more welcoming but makes him a little harder to root against he's just kind of a [ __ ] here hey there's even this dude with this goofy ass ashy skin his design is a reference to ishikawa's battle hawk manga weird little touches like that are just so good i love them there's even some neat references and background details like oh why did y'all bring him back the show was just so good about allocating screen time for its cast too juggling them in such a natural way that everybody's personal journey has wrapped up by the time we hit episode 12 and 13 for the big all-out finale leading the 13th and final episode to be a massive celebratory [ __ ] it throw all the money into this big ass space battle and you know what this show earns a finale like this outside of a fantastic cast pretty engaging story and great voice acting armageddon also features some stellar directing from kawagoe in his episodes while on the surface i prefer the darker more morose approach that imigawa took to his episodes only because it's slightly closer to the manga and tone i adore cowgirls episodes and even think the final four episodes of the series match up evenly in quality to the directing in the first three just from a more action focused standpoint that's more in line with getter 74 and getter g kalgooi really channeled the spirit of early ishikawa into his approach to direction and that's very appreciated especially that he still manages to match the pace of imagawa's episodes in episode in this show feels like it's ended right as you've started watching it there's not a dull moment here the action scenes in calgary's episodes all have a distinct sense of flash and speed to them bringing focus to the power and precision of this show's version of shin getter watching it rip through invaders at high speeds is amazing and its usage of its signature attacks is stunning to look at shin get her here fights with a scythe instead of a tomahawk and it's really refreshing to see a scythe used like an actual siphon in anime most shows even series i enjoy makes life look like fun flashy weapons that just spin around and just kind of slash people up with and while that's cool seeing shin get her [ __ ] slam this thing down with immense power and shred everything in its path up is perhaps the closest i've ever seen to this farming tool being used like an actual farming tool these crops about to get [ __ ] up shin getter 2 and 3 are also amazing to watch with 2's drill turning invaders into smoothies and three snapping dudes in two shin getter itself isn't the cosmic ever evolving terror of the manga here but its power is certainly represented and contrasting this is the action back in imagawa's early episodes with a far heavier dramatic approach to every attack from ryoma annihilating an entire army of ghetto g's while piloting a beat up get her one to hayato throwing out the drill on getter 2 and just check out getter 3 go to town everything has such a heavy impact to it that's not found in the later 10 episodes and hey would you look at that this sequence was animated by one hiroyuki imaishi between all that weighty action is just a sense of panic that really complements the first three episodes but i think both imigawa and kawagoe's episodes perfectly display the kind of action they're going for in the first place outside of its action scenes the art direction in this show is immaculate having one of my favorite aesthetics in any piece of media period brainspace opted to take an approach that emulated ishikawa's thick linework and general styling from his 70s manga but translated through contemporary late 90s sensibilities what you get is a drop dead gorgeous show that aside from some occasionally janky shots in the middle episodes is one of the most stunning looking anime i've ever had the pleasure of watching it's a show that animates incredibly and looks so goddamn beautiful while doing it and watching getter's ridiculous fusions rendered with a sense of internal logic not seen before is just another cherry on top the mechanical design in this series is on point with tatsuyo yamada handling the redesigns for all of ishikawa's famous mecca yamada took a fine tool and reworked all of the machines to fit into this new aesthetic getter 1 has a level of detail and weight to it unseen before with a far heftier build and a rusty damaged appearance that perfectly conveys the feeling of a machine that's far past its prime the cockpit is also hilarious too look at this mess shin ghetto robo's redesign is perhaps even more famous than ishikawa's original giving the machine a more angular exaggerated appearance with far larger shoulders and a slightly caved in face with its crazy eyes on almost all the time it still gives off the feeling of an imposing demonic machine but with its own very distinct look but the biggest achievement of yamato's work here is his anime original design black getter this thing is incredible just take a look at how creative it is built out of all those patched together parts strewn about it's got that unique mouthpiece and distinct color palette and a [ __ ] iron knuckle this is one of the most metal designs out there and it rocks yamata's work here is to die for it's no surprise that he'd take a similarly expert approach to his work on maz and kaiser three years later kenji hayama of tiger and bunny and so many other series handled the character designs here i've already praised his ryomashinichi hybrid design but everyone else here looks fantastic too capturing a mix of the toei series ishikawa's early manga and his own distinct look he really nailed the appearance of all these characters though i'll admit seeing as this is one of his slightly older works it's strange seeing character designs of his missing those big old dsls he gives everybody now he'd also move on later to work on maus and kaiser the invaders also all look phenomenal taking cues in their designs from ishikawa's work on kyomusenki specifically skullgiller jackie o but it pulls from all over when it comes to emulating his monster designs there's also some unique original designs here such as the very disturbing creature featured in episode 8. an episode that's basically one big send up to john carpenter's the thing along with the brilliant art direction animation and directing is of course an incredible soundtrack composed by yasunori iwasaki complementing every scene in tone from the darkness of imagawa's episodes being punctuated by a dramatic orchestra takaogoe's episode's getting some amazing rock tracks fused with a wonderful horn section you've been hearing parts of this ost for most of this video so you should already be able to tell how great it is the two opening themes of this show are also some of the best of all time with ichiro mizuki performing the powerful first opening imaga sono tokida the theme used for episodes two and three and i feel like pretty much every anime fan knows the second opening heats performed by hironobu kagayama the opening used for the rest of the show i [ __ ] with both songs heavy but i have a slight preference for the triumphant classic sound of mizuki's opening both the ending themes are also great with the nostalgic sadness heard in yakuzoku no okay satomi and chibachiyemi to the high hot blooded energy present in iwanaga masako's hurry up dream the sound design in the show also whips from the sound of ghetto launching into the sky to every single impact and punch general armageddon is just [ __ ] incredible it's a fantastic celebration of a great series that successfully tells its own story while still holding the spirit of the manga true if i was to make a minor complaint it's that the show lost some opportunities to go and explore the darker implications of the ghetto rays from the manga though visual elements from go and shin are certainly accounted for of course not all elements from shin are as both the manga and ova were running at the same time with less immediate feedback between the two than the original series and manga it's rare as hell for a series to dramatically switch up its director and writers and still manage to not just turn out successful but become one of the most popular entries in your respective genre that popularity is very well earned in japan and the rest of the world as armageddon was the first major piece of getter media to get a proper localization from adv films with a dub and all though that dub is a it's pretty funny you are the one that has to pay it's payback time and i'm here to collect i know but it's such a shame he had to become autistic hearing that last line in english is even funnier than reading it sub but regardless you should really stick to the subs when you watch this for the first time and then watch it dub the second time through for a laugh and that's a when not an if because the show is available on blu-ray over here from discotheque it comes with the adv dub and all go watch this brilliant show if you haven't already it's one of the most lavish celebratory adaptations you could ever get for such a cornerstone manga so how do you make a follow-up to an ova that good [Music] because of armageddon's success another ova from brain's base was a given and with getters newfound popularity and constant appearances in super robot wars it was a mystery why the series didn't have a standalone video game of its own that's where ghettorobo daikasen comes in developed by technosoft the studio behind the thunderforce series and released on september 9th 1999 ghetto robo would hit the ps1 in an alright game i'm not the best person to discuss srpgs in general as it's not my favorite genre yeah super robot wars is good fun and has some occasionally neat mechanics but come on you pretty much play that for character interactions and animated attacks but i took the dive anyway because man this game is a cool love letter to the series the story of daikicen is basically okay every single era and continuity of ghetto robo is mashed together which means all your favorite heroes and villains are here to duke it out all appearing as they do in their original ishikawa art style which is awesome ryoma looks like 70s ryoma and he's even voiced by kamiya again gol also looks really close to his manga counterpart for example scenes from the manga itself are even shown here and it's awesome to see them fully animated for the first time brainspace handled these cutscenes once again and they look well they look great but you know how ps1 fmvs can be so they're crunchy as [ __ ] despite how amazing they are you're not gonna ever get to see them in full quality because this is a [ __ ] ps1 game the cutscene you're seeing right now is extracted directly from the ps1 disc this is what it looks like in-game without a line doubler or upscaler the reason the rest of the scenes in this segment are hd is because i decided to use ai upscaling to boost their resolution the results are far from perfect but i think they work well enough for what i'm talking about here there's also the game's own original protagonist who you get to name and pick the appearance of there's two options either alien k looking ass or ishikawa male but the big game original element here is getter zan a pink getter piloted by three women akane mizuki tsubaki yakiyama and kaede shibasaki this thing looks pretty silly with its bunny ears but it's a neat idea that's pulled off pretty well and i'm honestly really sad these three have never shown up in anything beyond the game and the thai and manga released alongside it that chronicles the adventures of original character as for the gameplay here it's a pretty standard srpg units upgrades battles and all of some unique getter spice thrown in the stats of each unit are based on what pilots are assigned to them which is a really neat way of having all of your favorite pilots from the series and being able to put them in any robot want high auto to pilot the gustav you can do that if you want the game also has a pretty cool gatai system that lets you do things like only putting two get machines together to get whatever [ __ ] that is but i love this there's even a get or change mini game set in first person that's really cool i will say the game is pretty difficult at times you're gonna get your ass beat on occasion but as long as you sign your pilots to the right getter you'll be good the optimal is to just keep putting ryoma and i auto and whatever the recent strongest unit you get is hey even michirou's support vehicle is here that's how dedicated this game is to getting every single part of the franchise packed in here i honestly don't have much to say about the game beyond that it's a really neat piece of the series history of some amazing animated cutscenes and decent gameplay and there's also some not so amazing but still kind of cool i guess cg cutscenes seeing the internal workings of getter one are really cool but it's a ps1 cutscene you take what you can get this is the last game technosoft would make before closing and that's pretty sad honestly but hey this ain't a bad way to go out and the opening song by masaaki endo is one of my favorite getter tracks iwonaga masako's ending say goodbye loneliness is also really good by the way the game has no english fan patch so good luck [Music] so [Music] with ishikawa off writing a ton of other series and still being done with getter for the time bandai visual and brain space went ahead and said yeah we're gonna make another ova that last one was fire hey kawagoe you're directing again from here we got the short but very sweet shin ghetto robo versus neo get a robo set years after a brutal fight with the dinosaur empire that resulted in the death of musashi as well as manhattan being blown off the map hayato recruits a young new generation of ghetto pilots to battle a resurrected mechanical emperor gore and that's basically it that's the whole story no i'm actually serious you see shin versus neo is only four episodes long so brains base decided to say [ __ ] it and make the entire thing a big action blowout without much in the way of narrative the show certainly throws fans a few bones here and there in both references and even some hints at the truth of ghetto rays though practically all of these references are visual as opposed to narrative and you know what that's fine because shin vs neo knows exactly what it is it's here to bring you four episodes of non-stop robot action without taking a moment to dwell on anything else this show is like taking your action figures and bashing them together kawagoe's directing here is just as strong as it was in armageddon with the action scenes matching up pretty well in quality with what was already present in that series one advantage to short length gives is that the show looks gorgeous at all times any of the slightly jank moments in armageddon are absent here everything looks perfect and the series uses a very similar art style as well meaning it looks damn beautiful both still and in motion in a strange way this ova feels like a weird boss rush expansion to armageddon giving you the same great fights but only really the fights of course the show isn't entirely void of character it focuses on the getter team from the go manga and it's so good to see these guys fully animated and in widescreen this time going this series is tragically not entirely the same character he is in the manga shin versus neo really takes his battle ready side and makes it his entire personality while that's a little disappointing with this show basically being a movie in length i don't expect the depth present in the manga or in a 13 episode show so it's not really a problem it really takes one note elements of each character from the series and caps that off as their personality which again totally fine knowing the series focus and length it plays up its strengths though i will say guy and show don't really uh talk much here and that's a bummer at least it gives us the most laid back and calm version of hayato a lot of individual scenes are pulled and recreated from all over the series too just like daikusen it's really great to see some iconic shots recreated under a new context fujiosuzuki handled the character and mech design here and honestly he killed it giving everyone a slightly softer more welcoming look that fits the show's style far better than hayama's armageddon style would have everyone looks great with special shout outs to the resurrected gore who just looks incredible neogetter also looks great taking getter goes design and reworking it with some unique touches in its armor and face giving it a sharper less militaristic appearance shin getter is here too in a form factor closer to ishikawa's design but the best part of this ova is the fantastic texas mac in the original toy series jack and mary king were a one-off duo of american siblings who piloted a very silly looking texas mac and duked it out with getter this ova brought the king siblings and texas mac back and they are [Music] just the best every line these two say is hilarious i love some good ass broken english and jack king is up there with some of the greats when it comes to that texas max redesign is also killer a big towering mech that just screams the stereotype of america whenever it's on screen it's even got a giant sniper rifle that it pulls up from underground located in a casket this [ __ ] is so dumb and it rocks also they have a robot horse called pasture king shin vs neo is a fun ass ova that you can basically watch as a movie it's short sweet and extremely fun if a bit light on the side of story and character the soundtrack but kazuo nobuta is just as great as armageddon's it features my favorite opening and jam project storm and one of the best endings in rising also by jam project shin versus neo is available from disco tech on blu-ray in the west there's also an untranslated novel adaptation by aki noriendo it's a damn good time with some killer set pieces a crazy finale and a great soundtrack watch it if you just want a good time [Music] so through the late 90s and early 2000s ishikawa would continue to pump out other works from the dimensional traveling battles present in ammon saga based on the shinji oga and yoshitaka amano ova this manga was written by the ova's writer bakuyume makura though really the only thing the two works share is the name this is a completely different story than the fantasy-themed ova instead it's set in heian period japan and features some stunning artwork from ishikawa to some more wild buddhist space combat in naga no relation and of course he'd continue to write some historical pieces such as samurai tachi and omeiji ishin a story exploring the samurai's slow erosion caused by the meiji restoration it's a great comedic look at how one of japan's most interesting eras affected the famous samurai he also created a baffling hentai manga called blueberry doll ken was horny horny while writing this thing it's thoroughly insane and features nightmare vagina portals giant growing [ __ ] and bdsm nazis it's some serious d [ __ ] and it's a trip in 1997 the same year's blueberry doll ishikawa put out the yakuza sci-fi manga gokudoheki the story of a yakuza named shoza waging war against pretty much all the bigwigs in japan with a gatling gun arm which i guess was just hot in 97 and a leg that can shoot rockets the manga would receive a film adaptation in 2011 that got localized as yakuza weapon it was written and directed by tak sakaguchi who also stars in it and it's a film that needs to be seen to be believed the whole joint was filmed in 12 days and it clearly shows but despite that it's a really entertaining action movie with some insane set pieces including two very impressive one-shot fight scenes and what i can only describe as vagina rocket kata sakaguchi is known really well for his stunts so this film was a perfect fit for him he really manages to capture the feeling of ichikawa's characters and style translating the unhinged feeling of his manga to the silver screen ishikawa would also pan a chapter for the devilman anthology manga neodevilman his chapter goes hand in hand with the chapter written by gonagai and ishikawa has an amazing take on the world of devilman my favorite work of ishikawa's from this era though has to be 2001's juba yagyu dies an adaptation of another futari yamada novel this time being an even looser adaptation juba yagyu dies he's the titular historical figure travel to an alternate timeline where the shinobi ruled japan instead of the shogun it's out of its damn mind with some insane very inspired imagery and a lightning fast pace and i highly recommend reading this i will say that it gets cut off on a cliffhanger ending but this is just kind of a trend with ishikawa's work a lot of his series got cancelled before they could finish their run so it ain't exactly new for him 2002 would see a neat crossover manga focusing on the robots of dynamic pro called super robot retsudin it's a fun quick read that feels like a few episodes of the old toei shows just rendered out in ishikawa's gorgeous contemporary style he'd also put out eurasia 1274. a totally very historically accurate version of the mongolian invasion of japan no the last three pages are not one of the greatest swerves i've ever seen in a comic book period what are you talking about it's a totally real history book no what do you mean korean batman isn't in this in 2002 kazuki nakashima would take all the existing primary ghettorobo manga written by ishikawa and assemble it into an ultimate collection adding all the bonus chapters and retcons ishikawa had penned throughout the years and getting ishikawa to remaster and extend certain sequences this collection was the getarobo saga the definitive release of the series this release from ishikawa and nakashima would coincide with the final entry of the getter robo series in super robot magazine starting in 2001 ghetto robo arc would begin its run ghetto robo arc picks up 10 years after the conclusion of ghetto robo go the world is in a constant state of war against the same time traveling beings that attack the saotome institute in shin getter hayato continues to lead humanity in battle working from the now refurbished institute with his own army of getters and pilots he plans to cooperate with the reptiloids of the now rebuilding dinosaur empire in an attempt to stop the constant invasion of earth by this time traveling threat on top of this hayato plans to unleash his trump card the new getter robo getter robo arc piloted by takuma nagare ryoma's son kamui show who's half human half reptiloid and the monk baku yamagishi it's up to these three young men to pilot ghetto arc and put a stop to the insect-like andromeda country giroba arc takes the saga to its largest scale conflict yet weaving together a story of betrayal time travel and intergalactic conflict in which the fate of existence itself hangs in the balance the story actually takes us to the future ryoma dreamed of in shin where we saw the mysterious getter emperor here emperor is a force unlike any other a machine of pure ghetto race that pushes humanity to a new evolutionary front as humans began to colonize and move out to space ghetto emperor appeared seemingly from nowhere one day convincing humanity of its destiny to consume the very galaxy itself a being that seeks to assimilate every living being in the universe an unstoppable force that endlessly evolves increasing in size with the one goal of domination this is where the andromeda countries goals finally come into focus a group of multiple races that's had their worlds consumed by the might of the getter emperor seeking to undo emperor and humanity's unstoppable campaign by going back and destroying the getter at its source the moral dilemma of this creates begs the question of humanity's motives have they been doing right all this time by defending themselves from threats or have they only been feeding into the inevitable terrifying end goals of the destructive ghetto rays it takes questions already asked and go and chin to their natural conclusion by throwing us directly into the terrifying future that only benefits the getter it twists the series core concepts of evolution and human camaraderie to ask the question to its characters what will your future truly be this also almost paints the seemingly evil andromeda country as in the right for wanting to snuff out this hell early this is a dilemma that hits every character leading to some of the best morally grey character writing ishikawa had ever experimented with but before i discuss those characters i've gotta say the artwork and arc is stunning ishikawa ups the ante yet again with even greater scale than what was present in shin getter packing every panel with as much detail as possible while still keeping everything very legible the shots of space are especially stunning and provide a fitting sense of scope for this story the sense of scale really just reflecting how small humanity is on a universal measuring stick is a sobering fact that fits the themes of the story ishikawa was weaving here perfectly the fact that humanity made it to a point where it was dwarfing these galaxies is truly a terrifying idea and sing getter emperor completely dwarf entire enemy fleets is chilling he also gives us some of the best looking fights in the series getter arc or ah depending on the pronunciation is the most organic looking getter with practically nothing about it feeling mechanical from its predator-like mouth to its twisting blade arms to the machine rocking a six-pack this thing feels more organic than any getter prior to it the same applies to its alternate forms get her kirik and get her con both of which give off an equally menacing monstrous aura ripping through enemies with a level of brutality even further than shin getter and straight up eating some of them tearing through them with its devilish mouth in every panel it terrifies and brutalizes foes with ease and it's both terrifying and fun to watch this thing pull off some of these wonderful stunts and attacks it has perhaps the widest variety of moves of a getter arc's three forms are also all based on buddhist deities that actually tell us something about each character's personality arc piloted by takuma is virokana the universe in its truest energy and form kamui's kirik is amitabha the buddha of endless life who serves as a savior to guide others to nirvana and baku's khan is akala the fire deity that protects on the journey towards enlightenment along with art comes some very inspired designs for the andromeda country being based around insects they have a pretty creepy presence and a set of abilities that lets them pull off some truly nasty [ __ ] from laying eggs that brutally transform humans into these giant cronenberg freaks to using their giant battleships to blast away as much of space as they can other factions inside the andromeda country are based on ancient china which creates for some very welcome visual variety and honestly makes me think that ishikawa was on a bit of a romance of the three kingdoms kick and now on to the characters takuma is a man who's been overexposed to get a raise from birth giving him a natural strength and ability to withstand the getter's power and making him predisposed to being batshit insane this guy is even more balls out than his father was in his youth while also flipping on a dime to being a complete goofball his goal in being involved in this battle is to get revenge on the american scientists who murdered his mother who by the way is a goddamn queen for somehow getting ryoma nagare to reproduce these scientists now working alongside the andromeda country towards an unknown goal history repeats itself here with him and his father starting off their journey on a similar quest for revenge takuma's fun all-out fighting style gives him a new kind of presence he's the least restrained getter pilot yet and pulls some of the most insane power plays imaginable he's also hilarious knowing exactly what buttons to push to get people infuriated with him a total douchebag but a respectable one that still has a sense of empathy for others though he's even more boneheaded than his father was letting his empathetic side get snuffed out by the need for revenge a trait that creates conflict with the rest of the cast and even comes close to painting him as being in the wrong most of the time as the situation in arc unravels and the truth of the getaways is explained to him you can slowly see his resolve even his goal for revenge begin to shake it almost feels like every character ishikawa had written up to this point was fed into takuma he's the truest most refined version of an ishikawa protagonist baku is another big nice guy there's unfortunately not a lot to say about him beyond some interesting relationships to some of the characters from the latter half of get or go we're not given much time with him and any of the potential time we could have had is cut short though what we do see of him paints him as a bit of a guiding light he surfaces both takuma and the audience's anchor back to reality as the situation continues to become more dire hayato continues down the dark path go set him on now more cold and disconnected than ever he's a man who set himself aside with the goal of leaving the future and its fate into the hands of the three young men he's entrusted with getter watching the battle carefully from a distance you can really tell this is a man who's truly reached what he feels is the end of his life he's prepared himself for anything and seeing him in this content but rugged state is beautiful if a bit chilling the once violent passionate genius is now a quiet thinker sitting atop his tower waiting for the world to reach its destiny but through the actions of the new generation the spark in him begins to reawaken sadly this aspect of the story would never come to fruition hayato's story would end here pretty much every character in ghetto arc is phenomenal but the real star is kamui sho being half human and half reptiloid he's torn between two factions that are only cooperating for their own end goals he's a man who wants to help save humanity for the sake of his human mother who the dinosaur empire is holding prisoner till he truly proves loyal to them with the intent to backstab humanity once the andromeda country is out of the picture this conflict leads to many excellent moments of introspection into who he is and what his thought process is through all of this with this impossible weight slapped on his back once the getter team learns the truth of the ghetto raise and sees the nightmare future that awaits this debate only becomes more painful for him as he must make a choice to defend or destroy humanity not just for the dinosaur empire but for the galaxy and life itself his relationship with takuma is an intense rivalry the human lead pilot with a headstrong straightforward view clashes hard with kamui's contemplative mature nature the aforementioned references to buddhist deities make themselves quite clear what each dd represents files neatly under each character's profile with the exception of baku who only really shows hints of this it's pretty clear what each of these pilots represents for humanity's future but sadly this trio's battle and the conclusion to the getter saga would never arrive right as the narrative of ghetto arc is coming to a head with some jaw-dropping plot twists and every previous event in the series seeming like it was funneling into this one specific point it ends on a brutal cliffhanger as super robot magazine was cancelled in 2003. from here the existing ghettoroba arc chapters would be compiled into two ghettorobo saga volumes featuring a very fun mazinger z bonus chapter that ishikawa wrote as well as a regular three volume tankobon release that just covered arc itself ishikawa now left with no outlet to complete getter arc left the story on a cliffhanger for the time being shelving his potential plans for the time but still intending to finish arc one day oh [Music] as 2004 rolled around and the anime industry was finally entering the digital animation age brains base would produce one final ghetto robo ova with ishikawa's oversight with jun kawagoe stepping up to the plate to direct once again the final animated ghetto robo series would release in 2004 with 13 episodes new getter robo new on the surface is a remake of the original gedorobo manga set in 2004 instead of 1974. some immediate changes that set it apart are the enemies being the only of japanese mythology instead of the dinosaur empire and the characters all being young adults as opposed to teenagers ryoma is a vagrant fighter picking wars with the local yakuza and hayato leads an actual militia performing raids on military bases instead of just having musashi or benkei both are replaced by the original character musashibo benkei named after the actual historical figure getter is probably the only franchise big brained enough to pull something like this off instead of trying to pick either of the two original pilots they fuse them together to make one original character musashibo is totally unique from either musashi or benkei he's a former mountain wandering criminal turned monk who finds himself wrapped up in the insanity of the battle between the saotome institute and the oni threat he's a complete horndog too which leads to some of the most abrasively sexual content in the franchise they even show this man's nut sack his whole nutsack and [ __ ] he's not the only major change new getter makes though that initial pull of being a modern day adaptation of the first manga only stays true for about the first third of the show before it swerves on you completely and shows its true hand this series is a massive celebration of the career of kanye shikawa and throws in elements from all across his career under the lens of a getter series it takes elements in particular from his manga juba yagyu dies and makuha kenden in fact the show's central antagonist is pulled straight from that manga and of course plenty of kyomusenki is pulled from as well the middle act of the show is so crazy and out of left field that i don't want to spoil it as this shows non-stop pace and constant setting shifts make it a real treat to experience the show covers so many separate mini stories that adapt different parts of the getter saga as well as ishikawa's other work that it sort of creates this issue where the show feels like it has adhd it packs more into 13 episodes than most shows can in 50 and it's really quite a lot to take in it may sound like a complaint to say that but it's really not new getter is a non-stop onslaught from word go and never has a dull moment it's also the only getter anime that really comes close to taking the concepts presented in the later parts of the manga which is very welcome and it somehow manages to juggle all the stories it's covering with surprising tact both hayato and ryoma here are pretty manga accurate feeling like hybrids between their 70s selves and their shin selves it's even cranked up a bit in both cases where ryoma is about as batshit as he was in armageddon even more here at times spitting out some of the best lines in fiction period we also finally get to see an animated ryoma get at least some of the emotional development present in shin which leads to some fantastic scenes hayato instead of being an assistant to saotome starts researching ghetto rays on his own to find the truth of the odd happenings around the institute and within the ghetto robo throughout the entire series he's really trying to piece together reality on his own this is the strongest reinforcement that he really is the brains of the team yet and it's awesome saotomo here is aloof and cryptic most of the time hiding in the shadows and analyzing the situation at hand and it works quite well as michiru in this series is actually a fleshed-out character now she's the realist of the series essentially filling in saotome's role of a proper leader and researcher a lot of the side characters in this series are quite fun but to actually discuss them i'd have to talk about that middle act that i don't really want to spoil so i'll leave it be musashibo is really entertaining definitely the most vulgar and cruel of the big men in the series but i'd be lying if i said his characterization was particularly good outside of a few scenes he's definitely a great comic relief and does have some strong exchanges with the rest of the team but he's never given the same level of focus as ryoma and hayato as for the voice acting most of the cast from armageddon returns with hideo ishikawa honestly giving what i consider to be the best performance of his career he goes even beyond what he did in armageddon further solidifying him as the ideal voice for ryoma that getter tomahawk call is burnt into my head forever naoya uchira is also equally as solid as hayato here but with a slightly softer spoken tone as the younger version of this character kiyoyuki inada is fantastic as musashibo benkei bringing what's there of the character to life kinryu arimoto is also incredible as saotome carrying each scene with a chilling aura and with that excellent voice acting also comes a killer soundtrack from the returning kazuo nobuta who composes every track with an eastern sounding twist that particularly complements the series twists and turns and japanese history influence jam project also goes way too hard on both the opening and ending themes but comes packing even more heat in the form of some incredible insert songs that punctuate key fights in the series really bringing the hype there's a whole damn album of these intersongs that even comes with a few bonus tracks from non-jam project members like akira kushida this soundtrack kicks ass all around it's probably my favorite getter soundtrack but my favorite track has to be masaaki endo saga jin kawgo's directing in the show is exceptional at this point this dude has guterroba's action sequences down to his science every fight is just long enough without overstaying its welcome and the sheer power of getter is represented here in full force this show does have one major flaw though that being that it's a somewhat janky early 2000s digipaint series and as is the case it looks pretty smudged and has some strange dull coloring going on most of the time early digipaint shows also aren't exactly known for animating particularly well and that's the case here too while kawagoe's direction is strong like i said the movement itself is rather stiff throughout the show and only really gets going in small bursts i definitely understand why this show was done in digipaint but it sadly doesn't look even close to as good as the last two ovas the art style does help carry a lot of this weight as brainspace went for a style that emulates the later days of ishikawa strong rounded character faces and little scratch marks well accounted for only thing really missing here is the little uvulas fujiosuzuki returns his character designer and really does a great job capturing the stature of ishikawa's characters while putting in his own little twists everywhere to keep things fresh ryotanaka handles the mechanical design and his getter reimagining modernizes the iconic original robot while slipping in plenty of elements of shin with an extra sharpness to the whole design giving it an entirely distinct look that fits the show's all-around aesthetic and gives all of its forms a real big imposing presence also its dual getter tomahawks being little balls that shoot out of its shoulders and then morph into the tomahawks is pretty genius the oni also looks sick and are pretty much lifted right from the pages of ishikawa's other manga though some do look a tad odd at times new getter is a fantastic show by opting to be a career tribute to ishikawa instead of a full-on remake of ghetto robo it carves its own path feeling like a perfect crossroads of everything ishikawa has done throughout his life all centered around his mechanical magnum opus it also has a finale that comes pretty close to surpassing the blowout present in armageddon new getter's brilliant tribute to kenichikawa himself honestly makes it my favorite of the three getter ovas visually it can be a little rough in places but this is one of the most densely packed well executed and fun rides you can ever go on and a perfect tribute to the father of ghetto robo new getter is available on blu-ray from discotek it was originally licensed by genion but their dvds are long out of print thankfully this new blu-ray release also comes with jenny on dub which honestly ain't half bad lex lang makes her a pretty good ryoma the show is also available on retro crush but only dubbed and come on this is ghetto robo you're gonna want to watch this one sub new getter is just a show that gets better with time and the more of kenishikawa's work you read the better the soviet gets a true victory lap if i've ever seen one after the big career tribute and victory lap that was nugetta robo kanye shikaw would continue to pen a few other works including an insane mega man one shot with all the ishikawa isms present it's only eight pages so go and read that right now because it's a trip he'd also start writing a few more manga including cho goro food and haruka a sainan golf battle manga that concept [ __ ] rocks but i can't even find digital scans of this thing ishikaw was still riding high but then november 15th 2006 came during a dinner party after a night of golfing with his friends including gonogai ishikawa would suddenly collapse after being rushed to the hospital he was declared dead kenny shikawa passed away at age 58 leaving behind a legacy as one of the founding fathers of the mecca genre and a fantastic writer and artist who was cherished to this day as one of the all-time greats a title that is beyond deserved ishikawa's passing ghetto robo arc would be put on a permanent hiatus the answers to all the questions posed would never come the final outcome of the saga would never arrive and the character's story arcs would remain incomplete forever the getaroba manga would never be continued out of respect for ishikawa's legacy kenishikawa deserved to rest both as an artist and as a man who impacted the industry in far too many ways to even count but even with the legend gone much like the getaways themselves ghetto robo would always persist [Music] ghetto robo's main manga will never return but since ishikawa's passing the franchise itself has continued receiving a handful of spin-offs by other artists and plenty of cameos in super robot wars and in other shows under the approval of gonogai and dynamic productions and with the upcoming ghetto robo arc anime now set for this summer the franchise shows no signs of slowing down but before i talk about that series and why i'm so excited for it i've gotta talk about all those spin-offs knowing just how many of these there are i can't give full 10 minute reviews like i did for the rest of the stuff in this video so i'll just do slightly truncated rundowns of all of them going over which ones are good and which ones are best avoided or approached with caution if there's one thing i can say to all of these side manga it's that they have their own distinct approach to get her which is a net positive geturobohyen the earth suicide dropped in 2007 from artist naoto tsushima who's best known now for his transformers manga taking some of ishikawa's unused ideas that were left behind tsushima crafted what i personally feel is the best of the non-ishikawa getter manga set sometime in between get her go and get her arc the story follows surugi ryuga dan amakusa and goki todoroki recruited once again by hayato as they battle against professor jakkov and his army of ghetto ray-powered plants getter hyen was released at first as a webcomic before its eventual tankobon release so it's pretty short in length sitting at only three volumes and it takes great advantage of that short length all the pilots stand out with the same hot-blooded attitude of a proper getter team and they've got some decent chemistry going for them with all three bound together with the desire to avenge their families and that's really the main team of ghetto can family and what defines it there's some decent writing going on here as we get shown how each of these characters backstories fed into the boys they've become though when this familial theme is flipped to the villains it gets pretty incestuous though considering that naotosushima wrote the manga for fighting foodons before this i'm not very surprised that he has some weird ideas the plant beasts here are really neat assimilating the people they come into contact with creating some really terrifying abominations this series is pretty damn graphic at times which certainly isn't out of the ordinary forgetter but hein can definitely go the extra mile with it tsushima's artwork here is really fun and dynamic he's got these pleasant frumpy looking character designs and he's a pretty excellent mecha designer which really isn't surprising getter hyun borrows a lot of elements off shin getter especially the armageddon iteration and remixes it with its own design tendencies from big expressive eyes to cool kanji and another touch i love here is that getter 3 rocks these sick looking big chunky metallic teeth but my favorite design here is the statue of liberty head wielding american mecha excalibur a design that looks exceptionally capcom if you know what i mean the only issue i have in the artwork department here is that panels can sometimes have elements melding into each other making some shots a tad muddy but it's not often so pages read pretty well overall with a finale that's right at home with the rest of the series and its crazy scale and twists give this one a read once you finish the saga it makes for a nice little bonus chapter 2008 would see the ghetto robo anthology release a collection of mini chapters set in the getter universe by a ton of artists who came together for this project you've got a fittingly pervy and humorous gonogai chapter a chapter from tsushima which is just a bonus chapter from his volume release of hyen and a really neat chapter by masakazu oi creator of okusan that chose to get our emperor in an even further evolution the best chapter here though is the final chapter by dancing the vampire bund mangaka nozomu tamaki that shows musashi's final moments and a premonition of the future he receives at that time it's a really emotional heart-rending tribute to the character and hey look at that hiroyuki imaishi drew an awesome spread of getter goes first half none of the chapters here are bad some just stick out far more than others and how they experiment with the elements of getter's universe definitely worth checking this one out too oh lord have mercy here we go in the later half of 2008 hideaki nishikawa mangaka of the series z-man and the march comes like a lion spin-off series shakunetsu no toki would begin writing his own adaptation of ghetto robo titled gisho get a robo dash that would run for only a few chapters in magazine z prior to that magazine's publication ceasing nishikawa would then have his series re-engineered where it would start its new run in young animal arashi as gisho ghetto robo darkness in 2009 i hate to say this but ghetto robo darkness is the most unpleasant experience i've had reading a manga in a long ass time with a few decent elements that i will bring up to be fair to it darkness is set eight years after an explosion poisoned the world with ghetto rays and tore japan apart since that time saotome has seemingly risen from the dead and with a personal army of getter-powered beasts he plans to bring about the world's end hm that setup sounds just a tiny bit familiar can't put my finger on it though yes [ __ ] it i don't even care anymore the series opens up with a group of women being raped and torn limb from limb and that just kind of sets the whole tone for this mess the term is overused and is often applied incorrectly but it's needed here ghetto robo darkness is edgy not the fun kind of edgy needlessly edgy it's an intensely graphic series which is not an issue for a getter manga but this series is just unclean no pun intended in its execution every other page someone is being torn apart with shocking levels of detail i've never wanted to see a man vomit out blood clots before but here we are and it's just not right the series overdoes it on the gore getter was always graphic but never on this level the series is just so goddamn horny too but none of the designs that try to be sexy look good at all nishikawa is not an untalented artist far from it but he went for this stretched out gangly look to every character here that's just so goddamn unpleasant ryoma gets a [ __ ] and nuts in the first volume oh yeah this [ __ ] twerp right here is supposed to be this series version of ryoma and his character is that he's a nice boy who gets into mad edgy mode sometimes but he's a sweet boy guys he's really nice i don't mind alternative iterations of a character shifting their personality a lot the ghetto ova certainly cranked up ryoma's less stable elements but here it just does not work with this little kid flip-flopping in mood all the time any attempts at making him relatable or sympathetic fall flat hayato here is addicted to drugs that hold back his violent urges and i'll admit his backstory with his army here fits a bit better as the world is in ruins with jack [ __ ] in the way of government it makes sense that a revolutionary militia would be working to fix things he's not a high school student with a private army in this iteration but at the same time there's a literal needle in his body called the needle of revolution and bro it makes him go crazy when he activates it bro he's nuts look at that musashi is a frankenstein's monster constructed out of body parts of women from all over the world to make the perfect woman whoa and it was around this point that i really stopped caring but i guess shikishima and tatsuhiro in this version are cool oh yeah tatsuhiro is here he's actually the commander and it works well enough at times i guess he looks like hayato which is a pretty nice choice on nishikawa's part oh yeah the enemy faction here is called the idea because they are the idea of the getter of light saotome if it sounds like i'm getting rambly and hard to follow guess what take a look at these [ __ ] pages look at all this needless text that just spews onto the page at all times panel layout i don't know what the [ __ ] that is look at all these lines no i'm not bullshitting this series is really hard to read half the time because pages are just full everything is full getter looks like a damn todd mcfarland design here it's a mess did i mention the heroes are powered by dark ghetto rays this one ain't great a few cool ideas here and there do not make up for this horny ultra graphic almost unreadable mess again like i said nishikawa is not untalented going by his other manga he is a good artist i don't know about writer because i haven't read his other work i just don't think he had a very good approach to what he was doing here it's just super gross and unpleasant and it ends on a cliffhanger as nishikawa got sick at the time and dropped the series it was officially canceled at 4 volumes in 2012. nishikawa would never return to the series he worked on a few original series after and honestly that is the right call in my opinion stay far away from darkness it is the one legitimate stain on this franchise read it if you're morbidly curious i guess you might disagree with me in 2010 and 2011 uncle goh and dynamic pro would put out two crossover manga devilman versus ghetto robo in 2010 and mao dante versus getter robo g in 2011. both being one volume outing showing the getter team working with characters from gona guys manga there's really not much substance in these as they're fun gag manga that harkened back to 70's dynamic pro both in juvenile sexual humor and some very old school feeling action scenes what is really cool is seeing a guy draw a her one seeing him illustrate the iconic mecha in a manga of his own is awesome these two are fun but mind you mao dante vs ghetto g is untranslated 2014 would see a new line of ghetto figures called dino getter and this toy line would get a manga tie-in by hoshi kazumi of dynamic productions just like the two previous manga it's a fun one volume romp that's pretty much focused only on action and the twist of a getter story set in a prehistoric world ruled by the dinosaur empire is a cool setup and the dino getter itself is a pretty cool design 2014 would also see the release of robot girl z a comedy series based around the idea of the dynamic pro robots as magical girls and of course that means getter has to be here in the form of get chan voiced by maya uchida her performance and getter's appearance here are hilarious and she pretty much steals the show whenever she's on screen [Music] 2015 would bring ghetto robo its first full series immediately following the cancellation of ghetto robo darkness achi shimizu and tomohiroshimaguchi the duo behind the recent ultraman manga and line barrels of iron would get a shot at creating a full five volume ghetto robo manga of their own ghetto robodevolution would begin at the tail end of 2015 in wasatsu shonen champion and would conclude its run in june of 2019. devolution is a huge mixed bag for me i know quite a few people who really digged evolution and i can respect that i also deeply respect the duo of shimizu and shimaguchi they have a love for ghetto robo deeper than most and it shows many times throughout the manga my issues mainly come in the form of the themes present and evolution and its general execution of its ideas see gettered evolution is both a modern reboot of the series and an alternative meta sequel and this kind of story can either work out really well or backfire quite hard and get it evolution is definitely a 5050 in its attempt to give gedorobo this kind of story and while i respect it a ton i've got more than a few issues first the positives with the biggest being shimaguchi's beautiful artwork and panel layout with pages that have a speed and focus to them that keeps everything engaging even in the lesser moments of the series his mecha design is also fantastic with gettered evolution in all three of its forms taking on a particularly heavy metallic beastial appearance getter here has a massive imposing presence with a lot of wide hefty tanker-like body parts from the massive turbine shoulders of getter 1 to the huge tank wheels of getter 3 and all the enemy designs are also on point with plenty of them being visual references to ishikawa nagai's original unused getter design which is so so cool characters unfortunately all look fairly bog standard pretty anime boy which is a real bummer for me personally everything here has a toned down more realistic art style and while some may like it i can't fully dig these designs i do not [ __ ] with twinkayato i'm sorry this dude definitely has his own cryptocurrency but the art overall is strong and the pages are wonderfully rendered the problems with the evolution that i have arise from its story i want to try and avoid comparing it to other works that slightly reminded me of at first because it took many twists and turns over the course of its five volumes unfortunately those twists ended up backfiring bad for me and removed any vested interest i had in the story it begins with ryoma a recently orphaned high school student having his school demolished by an evolving monster called the devolved a being that seemingly arrived from an alternate reality he's then recruited by dr saotome to pilot ghetto robo along with hayato jin and musashi tomoe as the three continue to fight through the valve the mystery behind their mysterious evolving power and their constant random appearances begins to unravel and it's unsatisfying to say the least i'm slightly hesitant to go into further detail on this one as i could probably write a whole half hour video alone on it and this video is long enough so i'll just bring up what disappointed me about it in its final act for the first three volumes and half of the fourth the mystery surrounding all the strange happenings has a logical through line there's a great sense of focus and the way the story remixes elements from the getter saga is excellent then suddenly halfway through volume 4 it just shits the bed completely fumbling into a pile of grown-worthy fanservice and straying far from the path that made this an interesting meta sequel to begin with and again that's all i can really say without getting into spoilers because i do think evolution is worth reading i'd honestly love to discuss different interpretations of devolution as personal friends of mine who have finished it feel the same way as me so i'd really love to hear a different point of view 7cs published a pretty solid official release of the series too all five volumes are available now to order from pretty much any online bookstore being the only ghetto manga of any sort to be fully localized i feel encouraged to recommend you pick it up for that reason alone because this really feels like the only way to show that there is a market for the getauroba manga in the west devolution isn't the most recent ghetto manga to begin and conclude though that is 2016's ghetto robo high which wrapped up in late 2019. it's written by devil may cry blazblue and dragon's dogma scenario writer bingo morihashi and it's illustrated by drill jill who's a hentai artist that's actually pretty well known for his own series of ghetto robo doujins that have all the characters as big dick women piloting thicked out getters with a lot of [ __ ] and gore thrown in which is to be expected or at least i think that's what's happening half the time because some of these pages are impossible to parse out what's actually going on which makes me happy to say that when drill joe was given a chance to illustrate an official getter manga he made sure his panels were comprehensive and easy to follow his artwork here is great super expressive and high energy with some great heavy impacts and attacks and movement sadly the series hasn't been translated beyond the first two chapters and i wasn't able to get a raw rip of the third volume so i can't speak on its conclusion but what i can't speak on is its protagonist bonko benimaru is an appropriate level of high-energy tomfoolery watching her dash around pages with her big shit-eating grin is frankly a lot of fun and did i mention that the main form of battle in this manga is super powered mahjong matches i [ __ ] with this one heavy and i hope to see it scanned and translated fully one day cause damn getter one is thick as [ __ ] here this mech is cheeked up get her high is horny in the right way where you can tell this whole thing was a fun passion project for the two people involved the getter high crew even recently made their way into that mediocre super robot wars mobile game when i started working on this video i felt like that was it for the franchise we would keep getting new figures and cool spin-offs now and then but we would never actually get a continuation of ishikawa's own story which is a heartbreaking fact that pretty much every ghetto fan had already come to terms with ishikawa was gone and the man needed to be respected gonogai and dynamic productions were treating the series really well it was in good hands even if the fact that it would never get a conclusion was heartbreaking that was until november 1st 2020 [Music] [Applause] foreign ghetto robo arc is airing this summer from studio b media with jun kawagoe back in the [ __ ] director's seat i am beyond excited to watch the series even if this adaptation ends up cutting off at the cliffhanger of the manga i'll still be happy i do really hope that this is the way we get to see the conclusion to ishikawa's story but even if it's not this is a brand new ghetto robo anime in 2021 that's insane to me this is such a massive year for ghetto robo and it's a fitting coincidence that all this got announced while i was working on this video even if the mechs in the show are primarily cg they look pretty spectacular and have shown clear improvements in the most recent preview compared to the original trailer i trust june kawagoe and b media to knock it out of the park and with nayo uchida returning to play hayato and jam project returning to do the opening and updated versions of all their old openings this is clearly a passion project in every way this is also going to be the first ghetto robo series that's not an ova but a tv show since get or go that's incredible yuma uchida the younger brother of maya uchida which is a pretty funny coincidence let's be honest is going to be voicing takuma nagare and i'm ecstatic to see what he brings to the table with this performance our hino mukano will be voicing kamui show as their debut role and i wish them the best of luck with this it's a huge role to start with with kazuhiro sinseki playing baku the cast is looking solid and everything is honestly going in this show's favor and i'm beyond ecstatic for however the show ends up i straight up cried real tears when the series got announced and it just further made me reflect on how much i love this franchise even while i was working on this already massive video thank you for watching this incredibly long project that i've worked for over a year on it's pretty obvious at this point that i adore getter robo it's my favorite classic mecha franchise period no series is truly able to last 45 years without doing something right and ghetto robo does a lot right getter has such a wonderfully written expressive cast of modern day warriors who despite all the conflicts between them and around them hell even the conflicts they cause themselves still represent humanity at its best by coming together as one powerful force united by an unstoppable evolutionary energy it's a series that states that regardless of how bad a person you may seem if you can find a greater purpose by realizing that you're part of one big hole instead of just an individual you can do anything it has a cast that grows and evolves naturally as it dives into progressively darker concepts and explores some terrifying realities it's a phenomenal work of science fiction that's consistent in its own rules with a pantheon of legendary mecca under its belt and many of its adaptations and alternate continuities are also extremely good kenishikawa in general beyond just getter crafted a very well earned legacy as one of the greatest manga artists to ever live he evolved endlessly as an artist and a writer just like the metallic gods he created there was no stopping the guy really he was one of the brightest stars in this huge industry a star that tragically burnt out far too early but from one star many others are born and the wide reaching impact ishikawa and his work have had is something that can never truly be repaid ishikawa was a monolith of mecca and sci-fi manga and if there's one thing i hope to accomplish in this video it's that i paid proper homage to an artist that i consider to be one of my favorites i hope this video convinces people who have never experienced geduroba to go and read it and even dig beyond get her to experience his other works and i hope longtime ishikawa fans had fun going on this journey too kenishikawa will live on forever because he gave us something to believe in believe in getter we're getting the new [Music] [Music] italian without you [Music] [Music] you
