Wireless Network Types and Configurations

Wireless Mesh Networks

  • Popular in home-based environments.
  • Consists of multiple access points (APs) communicating with each other.
  • Devices outside the APs connect to a single AP to access the network.
  • New APs can be added to the existing mesh network seamlessly.
  • Mesh networks provide self-healing capabilities if a device disconnects.

Ad Hoc Connections

  • Connects two devices directly without an access point.
  • Utilizes 802.11 wireless functionality.
  • Also known as Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS).
  • Temporary or long-term connections possible.
  • Often used with IoT devices for initial configuration before connecting to a larger network.

Point-to-Point Mode

  • Connects two devices over a distance, often between buildings.
  • Requires compatible AP software and capable hardware.
  • Additional antennas may be needed for extended range.
  • Frequency and power output adjustments may be necessary.

Infrastructure Mode

  • Centralized access point model, common in homes and offices.
  • All wireless devices connect to a central AP to communicate.
  • Option to allow or restrict device-to-device communication within the network.
  • Ensures security configurations are properly set on the AP.
