so if you want to make a living full-time online as a content creator or with a YouTube channel how long does it actually take well a study was done that reveals a surprising answer and in this video we're actually going to be covering the surprising follower count that you need to be a full-time Creator 10 different ways professional creators are earning money right now and the average startup cost that it takes to launch a Creator business business and this is actually from the most recent content entrepreneur Benchmark report from the Tilt which was done in the last six months or so I believe and they revealed how long does it take to build a successful Creator business and so um there's a couple things they talk about these figures apply to content creators who spend most or all of their time working on their content business so I think it's important to note here that this isn't if you're just dabbling this is if you're going into this with a mindset to dominate you're spending some serious time you might be doing it as a side Hustle but nevertheless you are actually focused putting out quality content you're doing this with purpose you're doing this zero months the first Benchmark is 4.9 months that they discovered and that was when you earn your first dollar I'm curious what your experience has been how long have you been in the content creation game um how long have you been posting content on YouTube have you started yet right around five months 4.9 is when the average person they surveyed earn their first dollar could be five months to get monetized but they actually in this report we're going to look at some of the other surprising findings and so that was kind of fascinating you got to be in it at least five months before you even earn a dollar from your content business uh then at 12.3 months Revenue exceeds expenses interesting okay there we go the next one's 12.3 months where Revenue exceeds expenses okay so at this point now you've been doing this for an entire year money has come in you've continued to have money go out that you're investing but right at one year there's a little bit of profit then at 12.7 months again right around a year switching to fulltime so someone goes into based on this report to creating content starting an online business and it takes an entire year before they go full-time Allin and as a solo Creator that's what they just would discovered here because then at 18.4 months they can fully support themselves and then at 18.8 they hire help for the first time so I'm curious we will link to this um PDF and study in the YouTube description um so you can look at this for yourself there's a lot of interesting findings but what are your thoughts on the journey to building a successful Creator business might be important for you to notice uh that they also in the Tilt which did this report broke down three categories of creators and was focusing in their studies on Expert creators so the three categories were maker creators people who create content about their craft or hobby they may monetize the content but they also sell things think Etsy so artists Crafts People chefs homesteaders the list is nearly endless they run a different type of business and they have raw materials and inventory and they ship physical Goods which of these three categories would you put yourself in let me know so that's maker creators then there's influencers I think we kind of all know the term but these is people who operate personality-driven businesses that publish content to monetize their popularity and celebrity they thrive on Pop popularity not necessarily skill or knowledge influencers in the center there would be entertainment maybe you're being followed because of Lifestyle um and it's not they say here it's not as much of a business because it can't really be sold because it's tied to one person but then the third category that they focus on at the Tilt the people who did this report is expert creators I would say that's who we focus on to think media as well it's people who create content about their area of expertise or passion they build media compan companies even small ones and they monetize their content some expert creators also sell a service coaching consulting or educating so when we go back now to our previous slide where they revealed how long does it take to build a successful Creator business this is what we're talking about and I think what's interesting about this timeline let me know if you think this is fast or slow based on your experience I think that going into this in fact there's five tips that they break down that I want to share with you in just a minute and then also on today's coffee with can show you can check out time codes and chapters because we have two coaching sessions and some other cool stuff happening but they are really talking about I I I think when you launch here you're not launching with total confusion I think you're launching with Clarity you're launching with strategy and you're you're going into this with a plan and even still it's taking a year and a half before you can fully support yourself switching to full-time fully you know having some margin on the money and then even the ability to hire a few people scale a little bit and so again they're talking about expert creators now what was surprising to me was a couple other highlights from this study was that the research showed most creators have relatively small audiences these are people doing this full-time in fact I'll show you the numbers they're earning in the behind the scenes of their business on the next slide but people who run their content business as a full-time Endeavor have an average of just 4,000 followers across all channels just 4,000 does that number surprise you you know there is this whole term of micro influencers and Nano influencers and I think it's an underestimated term again we're not talking about you just accumulated 4,000 subscribers because a random short about a random topic went viral we're talking about you've built an actual audience Community if you've been around think media for very long you're familiar with the a thousand true fans concept so I don't think 4,000 unique followers is that surprising for most it's not the size of the audience but how deeply engaged they are with the content and then they also say they have four unique channels then that two bring in direct Revenue one Creator explains it took me a few years to realize my time was best spent focusing on a few channels where my audience hangs out most once you narrow it in it takes persistence and patience and so trying to be everywhere is oftentimes a poor investment of your energy I think if we were talking about four channels what are your four channels me YouTube number one YouTube number two number three for me is YouTube and number four is Instagram no but uh my four channels would probably be YouTube first and foremost hands down Instagram would be a big second favorite I think your average YouTube Creator professional individual friend relationship and professional relationship seems to be on Instagram so it's just a good place to connect and take the conversation deeper and it obviously lends itself to Vertical video so for me if I'm ranking at this moment I'm saying YouTube I'm saying Instagram I'm saying Facebook next and then I'm saying my email list it's not is that a channel um I don't know you tell me okay now here's what's interesting how much do content creators make so this is of course hard to narrow in on but this is and you might find that these numbers are surprising because they're saying gross income of 108,000 a year but the creators they surveyed are those who spent most all of their time working on their content business so now they're talking about okay this person is a full-time Creator they might only have 4,000 followers there was like, 1500 people or so interviewed for this study but this is some fascinating numbers that you might want to wrap your head around so they discovered that it takes $10,700 to launch a Creator business hm what does that mean so if you're thinking about starting a channel from scratch of course you can just grab a smartphone and a laptop and start you know creating content but if you really sit down and you think I want to build a battle station and you think maybe I want to invest in a CRM email list I want to start finding a way to schedule appointments or do coaching or consulting or host my online course there's gonna be some online tools technical some software maybe it's a BD IQ thing maybe it's some other things you invest in right okay so they're saying it takes about $10,000 to Launch lach 1 to 2K a year in annual Tech expenses they said one 1K in year one through three and then 2K thereafter maybe that's maintenance of also software I'm not sure 108 Topline Revenue if you do this full-time 108 Topline revenue is pretty cool but that's that's not like the job you work at pays all the expenses and you just take your salary home and invest that how you want 108 gross 108 Topline Revenue means then all of your expenses come out of that and what do you have left well they tell you 62224 uh so 60k a year with take home after hey getting to have a Content business uh full-time there's a quote on here that say many people misunderstand uh being a content creator as they get rich quick scheme which means they're not playing the long game and that will eventually kill their business now how are they making money well there's 10 ways they list coaching and Consulting number one books number two now the Tilt and if you want to read this study we'll link to it in the description below but the Tilt is um focusing on content entrepreneurs and and to be clear you can do that as a podcaster you could do that as a writer blogger you could do that as a video creator so I think that books is a little bit higher on their list although I personally think that any serious personal brand Builder should seriously consider writing a book because it's one of the greatest powerups for a personal brand online courses and workshops affiliate marketing links advertising sponsored content how-to guides speaking fees paid membership Community online events and donations they also talk about the top five most profitable with coaching being number one books number two and it's interesting that even though paid memberships and communities were a little bit lower down the list and how often they were used it is listed as their fifth for most profitable so 10 so 10 different ways to earn money and uh in just a second I want to share with you the five tips they have for being for starting in launching a successful crater business and um I'm curious what your thoughts are on those and then we're going to dive into our coffee with canel show for today um but today's episode also is brought to you just heads up by Opus clip a little bit more on them later and by our Summit did you get your ticket to grow with video Summit yet let me know if you go to summit.in media.com you could see that uh we are super excited to have Patrick B David and Nikki Saunders and shelene Johnson and Dave Ramsey and Oli abdall and Cody Sanchez and Pat Flynn all at our three-day online event if you haven't got your ticket yet you could grab it at summit.in media.com and I'll tell you a little bit more about that later but what they said it takes about 18 months a year and a half half before going full-time and I should say not full-time actually earning enough Revenue to uh to what launch how long does it take to build a successful Creator business about a year and a half um if you know what you're doing and if you're an expert Creator and um that obviously experiences vary but what are some tips for actually making it this is all from a report from the tip number one you want to think like an entrepreneur think like an Entre ENT preneur so this is interesting we talk about this a lot at thick media um we it was summarized by Jay-Z the philosopher and profit right who said I'm not a businessman I am a business man and I think that one of the missing pieces for a lot of content creators are people who just are accidental entrepreneurs they come online they start creating content is they don't have a business mindset they don't have business Acumen they don't think necessarily like an entrepreneur they don't think like a business owner and I don't blame you because you just wanted to express your creativity and make videos nevertheless if you want to start run and benefit from a successful business got to ask yourself a question how do you run a business as opposed to just how do you make content that successful so think like an entrepreneur was number one and you know what's interesting is in this report they said that non-creative tasks take up nearly half half the time of professional creators what does that mean well if you've ever thought about it unless you partner with somebody which we'll link this up in the show notes if you haven't listened to my episode with Lila Hermos she shares probably the most valuable insights I have ever heard about partnership and with the advice that a lot of content creators should consider partnering with somebody to run the business side because it's a whole another skill set but assuming you're going to do it by yourself no no if ANS or butts about it non-creative tasks take up nearly half the time of professional creators spending time doing business necessi such as federal state and local certifications and tax responsibilities these obligations will suck up your time and profits as far as you know could be meeting Logistics emailing all that kind of stuff so when you think like an entrepreneur it's not you're not just a content creator you're an entrepreneur you're a business Builder and there's a whole set of skill sets number two plan your budget and Runway if it's a 12 to 18 month Runway and remember in this study they were very clear the people that they were surveying spend the majority of their time creating the content so if you're like man I've been doing this 18 months and I am nowhere near you know full-time or anything well have you do you do it 40 plus hours a week or are you trying to do it when you have two jobs or kids or school or some other hustle or you know your business owner it's very hard time to find the extra content uh time to create content so when you're planning your budget and Runway the 12 to 18mth Runway is how much savings in some cases if you look at the report they did people who you know took a loan out or had some other way of getting money but a lot of times it was just kind of bootstrapped savings 12 to 18 months was the runway three uh three zero in on your audience remember the more Niche your audience and the more narrow your topic the better the odds of success number four start career consistency is one of the biggest challenges for creators you know if we go back to this whole timeline that it showed us this would I would think not only are you doing this the majority of your week but you're also consistent consistent quality content consistent Vision consistent Mission consistent message consistent content consistent brand consistent value building building building with with your whole plan your money plan all designed out and that takes a year and a half so again I I just sort kind of frame this up because I know that for some of us you're like I've been doing this for 18 months trying to figure out my thing great it's just we're at different places but that was that's very common 18 months trying to figure out what is even my Channel about or experimenting a little bit or what is you know that's a different path to be on I think that um if we think about consistency we want to be consistent with our Strate strategy our content our message our brand and if you don't know that stuff yet no no worries um it just that might even be like the precre that leads up to the launch of your strategic channel number five craft your monetization strategy early we we call it a money plan we call it a business plan and they say experiment with multiple revenue streams to see what your audience responds to and then build up the successful ones so um if you fail to plan you plan to fail and so if you're planning on having a successful financially successful Creator business what's the plan makes sense so some good tips from the Tilt that's where that uh report came from I think they've done it three or four times and so that's the most recent one I think towards the end of 2023 so in this recent era and U I'm curious your thoughts your takeaways and where are you out have you already made your first dollar online have you um just started how many videos have you posted and how many months or years into this thing are you what do you think about their idea that it takes about a year and a half 18 months to you know go full-time in a crater V accelerator program he's a YouTube genius really a business genius and social media genius and I'm super fired up to have Brian on the show Brian welcome hey hey Sean I am stoked too I'm like so excited for growth video Summit happening next week I my mind's blown I I one one really quick I saw somebody made a comment and I just want to say yes are live like this is actually live I think it was raie I'm trying to find your comment anyways yes this is live absolutely live and one thing that uh I you guys been walking around in the background it's 100% live this is my opportunity yeah we were pre-recorded with with Sean Bradley just walking around the room uh no but one of the things I wanted to talk about really briefly is we've had people asking this question at Summit like is it just going to be recordings of what happened at growth video live and the answer to that is no like it's not going to be just here's recordings and we're going to just push the live button and here we go like no it's going to be there's going to be an element of that for a few things but ultimately like Sean's teaching absolutely live uh our guests are are speaking live as well and so I'm I'm really excited about it like it's going to be an entirely different event and I couldn't be more excited about what's going to be happening uh next next week that's insane that's that's a good point it's probably about 15 20% because for example you you can't get access to Dave Ramsey session anywhere else or like our fireside chat with Cody Sanchez but even Pat Flynn's coming back live Nikki Saunders coming back teaching live I'm teaching all my sessions live you've got this brand new session from Gary Vander chuk only for the summit you've got you know Patrick M David uh Ali abdall doing like 45 minutes of Q&A after his hour session it's gonna be uh really really packed with value and I mean I think that right now tickets are like 47 so um anyways check it out summit. thinkink media.com but Brian with that I'm excited because today we have um Jules who is one of our V accelerator members and she is going to be jumping on we're going to do some Q&A with her uh juules welcome to the coffee with Kel Show good morning so tell us a little bit about your channel your vision what you've been up to and uh then we'll dive into your questions in a second but when did you and what are you up to on YouTube okay well totally first of all thank you so much I'm like on cloud n right now I'm super stoked thank you thank you thank you um my my channel is uh just very delicious I love having it in order to serve my community in the Arts and Crafts industry that I've been a part of for a really really long time and um and so I've been using it to educate people on my product line so I'm the inventor of the jewel loom which is a portable bead weaving loom it's all over Hobby Lobby Michaels um Amazon you can find it all over the world it's the blue one and uh and then I have developed and designed sustainable Baltic birch wood looms so I've been using it in this category to educate I've been going live um for gosh a couple of years now uh every Thursday at 4: we did talk about that yesterday and so that'll definitely be one of my questions about moving forward with that and then Dela and I have talked about what to do moving forward as well so I'm just yeah I just love being able to have that platform in order to really communicate uh because I is uh about the connection between um healing and creativity and you know I love the Lord so it's also a spot for me to just kind of interject that passion and yeah I love it awesome well yeah let's dive in so a couple things uh we'll go through your questions and then Circle back on that live question that you mentioned for us okay so your first question was do I need a welcome video right now the one that you have covered weaving only um our opinion is generally you do not need a welcome video okay for everybody watching if you're watching this live or on the replay if you do go to customization and you go to your channel there's two options there's a channel trailer for people who haven't subscribed and there's a video for uh returning subscribers if you actually notice what we just did with these on the think media channel is we have a promotion for our Summit which is coming up soon that's which indicates a couple things you can switch this out what is what video do you want to get views what video do you want to be promoted what video do you want people to see we've made both so whether you're new here on than or whether you've never been or whether you are already subscribe we want you to know about The Summit in other cases what I like to do is I like to just select one of my best performing videos that is most likely to give people a good um impression and so like which beaing Loom should you start with yeah I would probably make that the channel trailer okay and and that's not to say that having a channel trailer is bad I just think that your energy could be best invested in your next best video that would grow your channel okay um question two should I remove the videos from my channel where I use other talent to demonstrate my product and I am not in the video is it harmful uh is it no well yesterday in talking with Alex um we talked about removing those and so I and just putting them as unlisted so when I was super busy building the e-commerce shop in 20 2021 uh you know I had hired other talent to present and so there are there were like almost a 100 videos where I wasn't physically in the video and so yesterday um after you know being in Alex's chat uh I enlisted them and so yeah that I think that's that's great and that I think a good takeaway principle there is for everybody watching again is what is the brand and impression you want to make going forward exactly most extreme example is for some people they pivot their entire Niche and they have some old cooking video getting thousands of views when now their new Niche is weaving or crafts and in that case also private or unlisted is ideal because you just don't want videos that aren't building whatever your vision is for the future so I think that's a great tip number three I am working on my thumbnails and I've uh listened to some of Sam's course and for everybody listening Sam is one of our coaches at think media it's got a graphic design Channel as well so that's some really good information I'm not sure how to say three to four words but I'm trying okay that's a good that is a good um yeah question one of the ways if you're gonna if you're gonna put words on your thumbnail is think about when you think about three to four words think about phrases like try this so so that's two words and you have some powerful title like how to add a slide conector to your seed bead pendit made on beadloom you might have an arrow and it might say try this and that a lot of times can really enhance a thumbnail or this doesn't sound like your Vibe but if I rattle some off secret hack New Way um and those types of secret hack is a little click bait or little dramatic you know you could try something like that so um and and I think that uh a lot lot of times if you just make the final product the hero of the shot like some of these thumbnails here that you've done that's great um but that's what we would be talking about I think the anti is is something like juel Loom tips and tricks interview with Juliana you know inventer of the Jo there's just a lot of words and and that also in the context of that taking it an entirely different direction of can it just story tell without any words or can a few words reinforce what it is because we want thumbnails to be simple clear there's also the rule of three which was learned from how Netflix does thumbnails which was that oftentimes a Netflix thumbnail has maximum three things happening one character now there's going to be times where you see like the entire office cast in a Flying V but here's what's interesting about Netflix is they'll like split test thumbnails they show different thumbnails to different people they have different thumbnails they start figuring out that perhaps you're a you know female viewer who likes hallar and romance type videos and so that even the characters in the shows that they'll put in the thumbnails all of that would be based on psychology and so that's why we've all seen maybe the full cast Flying V of the office or one character just Jim and Dwight just Dwight anyways rule of three is keeping it as simple as possible what would be most uh effective there Brian when we look at the channel and just kind of look at some of the opportunities for jewels to grow that you're noticing yeah no absolutely and I second that on the Netflix thing I was watching a video the other day and it was a guy who he was like check this out and he he uh looked at his Netflix account and looked at all of the top 10 movies and then he's like see all these thumbnails and then he went to his wife's account looked at the top 10 movies same movies but it was the completely different like for him it was the wartime like epic you know like thumbnails and then for her was the the loving side the the seeing the women of the car of of the movies and stuff like that so it's really interesting um seeing that but nonetheless taking a look at your channel um there there are a few things one thing that I um am noticing when I go to your channel is scrolling down just a little bit more is um this this section so you have like that one with a thumbnail it's all blue and it's got a little bit of uh gradient on the right hand side part two building your base for the willow we beaded bracelet the thing that if I think about if I think about the titles and I think about the videos themselves one of the things that we we often try to go towards is treating every video as its own video um you can you can totally have part twos and part 3es and like they combined together but I would say it as you know if I want to click on this video it's because I I'm going to get the promise of whatever it is that this video is about right if I click on the video and I see it's part two it's almost like but what am I missing from part one or what's part three or how did I even search to get to this point which often you're not like nobody's going to be searching to get to part two or part three right so we want to see you know maybe it's the promise of the video right up front so like building your base uh for the willow beaded bracelet and so it sounds like a it's a brand or it sounds like an a specific tool and so it would be like tips for building your base or the willow beaded bracelet tips for building your base or something that's like more specific to here's where I'm gonna get the answer to my problem my question and then you know if you have three parts you can create a playlist out of that you can try to tie those things together so that then um at the end of part one uh we we we we uh transition to part number two and we would talk about this as like the perfect video recipe right where we have the big idea the topic the title and all that at the start get into the hook and get into the content and at they end it's almost like part two is the answered question to the end of part one right and so then we're transitioning to it through even a playlist or I mean connecting those videos together right so that that's one thing that I'm seeing um another thing that I I honestly so if I look at your channel you're um we're seeing discover the joy of creativity with my fun and easy DIY craft projects like that's your about section that's the top of the page and that's the first thing that we're looking at and so here this is just me getting a little bit of clarity here end of day you're hoping to create joy and or help people discover Joy through creativity um through really technically any DIY crafts But ultimately on your product right like that's kind of like end of end of the tunnel is your product but the beginning of the tunnel or beginning of the funnel is I'm just trying to help people experience joy and I'm hoping to do that through the product is that correct that would be most correct yeah and so the reason why I'm get Okay the reason why I'm getting there is because um it kind of opens up the types of videos that we can create too and so here here's what I mean if you're creating and you're crafting one thing that I love for anybody who is doing a crafts or a creation type or something that can be absolutely seasonal is look for tent pole opportunities and doing those throughout the year and so one example of that is let me see is if we go to Google Trends let me let me get this open too I can pull it up oh there you go yeah so if we go to Google Trends like we can start just pulling up different types of searches so we can do like Thanksgiving craft and see see what what comes up here um and then we can do probably another one like Christmas craft or like Mother's Day craft and start to see uh these tentpole opportunities so let's do yeah YouTube and then past 12 months and then compare to one other um yeah let's compare to one other let's do Christmas craft as well or let's do Mother's Day craft right so we're seeing at this point throughout the year we're seeing different opportunities of what people are searching for and when and so obviously Mother's Day craft we're going to see that shortly before Mother's Day coming up and so what that tells us is every year this is about the week or the two or three weeks where people are starting to create some intense search for these specific things so like Mother's Day craft happening looks like about the two to maybe three weeks before Mother's Day happens uh and that's like a tentpole opportunity and a tentpole opportunity is exactly like this right like you can see like hey this is a tent P it's the top of the tent and it comes down afterwards we're not going to see very many views afterwards but it's almost a yearly thing that people consistently come back to and so anytime we can find these tent pole opportunities for like a craft-based channel we're setting ourselves not just for this year but like next year the year after um and continuing to just just compound that growth over time so like that's that's another opportunity where I was looking at the channel and I don't know if I could find any that were like holidays are the easiest temples right you know we the same day every year the same thing that we can look for every single year um but then there's also events events that potentially could could uh be be brought up as well um right so is that helpful yeah I mean I that and that's exactly what Dela and I had talked about is that you know being I mean with 30 some years in the Arts and Crafts industry yeah I have literally done it all it just so happens that my product line you know evolved into into looms but you know I've made Japanese ribbon knots and I've taken dryer lint and made re you know masks and wreaths and I've done everything and so she and I talked about really kind of dabbling in those search related creative videos to kind of build the channel as the expert that I am in the Arts and Crafts industry who happens to also have the jewel loom right so it's kind of an interesting and if I'm hearing you correctly then then that is the right thinking and so you know an editorial calendar like I used to have in my other world and really kind of tapping into those searchable things absolutely absolutely yeah okay so good and a couple more things as we land the plane you mentioned um uh my interview with Sarah Renee Clark and would she be a good channel for you to learn some things from absolutely yeah so first we'll link up the interview I did in case anybody else uh watching this would want to watch my interview with Sarah Renee uh especially if you're doing art crafts there's many things she's done including really how she's built out her business and she's thought about you also already have that product as well too she's created different products as you're familiar with I think um whether that's um using kind of the trending Style versus the search based style she does both I think if we look at the search based style her most popular video of all time color theory Basics how you know use the color wheel to choose color so just kind of makes a kind of a hero video to own teaching around something like color theory that's a big lesson and then then the challenge model so that's when we think what is when we say challenge it could be confusing because like sometimes we always to a YouTube challenge or people do a fitness challenge it's sort of the same thing but the reason you the reason you do a 7-Day fitness challenge is like I want to lose 10 pounds in 10 days and you do a challenge well the YouTube challenge model is I tested every color pencil in the world that's a challenge to test 4,132 pencils obviously this is kind of a spectical and this is reminiscent of a Mr B situation I think what you also might notice here though look at the b-roll the spider shots time lapses production value it's kind of intimidating but we could think that maybe this is this might be phase two phase three on our creater Journey so being thoughtful about the type of energy editing skills team and uh Sarah I believe you know at this point was well established had been full-time for many years had been focusing had been you know kind of systems and getting more comfortable but all that to say many Clues on on a channel like this she's a very smart Creator so I would recommend uh doubling down on that you also asked about thumbnails should they be a combination of you wearing the Finish piece or just the Finish piece I want to um I I think either or but a big key would be good photography and a good point of view and a good I think that I've learned if I'm going to do good thumbnails I need to take 30 pictures to come up with one good one because getting the right light getting the right angle getting the right look getting the right where I've experienced this is on cameras like if the camera is a black camera with a black lens in a poorly lit room with a black background or a gray wall background it disappears so we start learning like okay actually I need a white desk to to do a photograph of this piece of tech I I've bought construction paper and different color paper to do photography of different Tech in different situations so that the thumbnails could pop now of course you could use AI to replace things and whatnot um but I found that product photography but then what I would think is you know related to your Niche and final tips as we land the plane and if you have a question remember four question marks before and after we'll do some Q&A on coffee with Kel as well for everybody watching here live but if you were to say like how to make a bead um as a reminder I we want you in VR to be going through some of the lowest hanging clearest desire of of the audience you want to help which could be some of the basic things we call it answer specific questions you could answer specific simple even stupid seeming meaning like that's maybe so simple or so obvious but like how to make a beaded bracelet all that to say is like if we go search what is the what are the clues the top rank videos give us I think the fact you see notice a couple we just talked about it earlier two words professional method little arrow final result fingers holding pretty simple very interesting yeah making simple bead bracelets um from a huge Channel we don't see the subs maybe they have the subs hidden but anyways very you window light kind of a nice lighting nice it's good lighting good angle of the light even though you can see the lights coming in from the left side again we've got similar to kind of what you might do you put your bracelets on on wood now what I would say is even like if I was coaching this Creator like that wood is pretty good but it it it doesn't make the bracelet pop as much as it could yeah that's why having some different color pieces of paper I believe that you could like notice the fact they put this on a probably a pink poster board helped so so this is just sort of thinking through some Basics and this one too that's kind of they had green felt or like seafoam felt that kind of doubles down on the seafoam beads of this particular so anyways I think um the answer is you could you could do either but I would all I I also like to make one two three four thumbnails and then once I look at them all be like okay which one pops most now that I'm looking at them side by side even though this one I kind of like it is it confusing is it as clear as the others those small tweaks I think can uh lead to Giant Peaks when it comes to getting more views and just improving your thumbnails well Jules have you got any uh insights or has this been a helpful conversation today yeah I'm I'm almost speechless but uh I'm so grateful I had the time of my life at your event it hands down was the best event I have ever been to the most kind generous giving loving delicious Souls ever and um I learned so much I have a bazillion notes and I'm super super stoked to just like add the whole create you know Creator content segment to my business um because I do believe that's the way to scale it and um and I'm just really excited and and hopefully you know my plan with the lives is to maybe take it to like once a month because it is a tremendous amount I don't want to let my community down so yes that's my only well you're you're in the right place we're here to help and so grateful for you and uh future is bright and thank you so much for coming out to Vegas and excited to watch your uh Channel continue to grow thank you guys so much thanks Jules thank you yes all right uh Frank said agree the event was amazing thanks for coming out Frank appreciate you um and uh couple questions are coming in here and we'll get into our next and we'll get into our next coaching session in just one second with um an okay so question though was advice for authors on how to best use YouTube um so a couple things I think the question maybe if you're still here let me know is is what are you trying to accomplish are you trying to the the initial question for me is Who Who Are You creating content for and is it B2B or B to C and for an author what does that mean this is an education channel to help other authors succeed as authors or to help them write books Market books figure out books you might be a fantasy teen fiction writer but your target audience is other writers now if your if your target audience is um the consumers of your books and you want to sell your books then I think your approach can be a little bit different I think you could study David Green a little bit obviously a pretty big Legend not David green John Green uh and John Green uh Vlog Brothers YouTube legends I think just kind of the nature of building an audience building a community talking about different things and then also writing great books and I think the reason is books have spread is also on their own merits Word of Mouth Etc I think another angle to take is um you know if you take a a piece of YouTube strategy out of this current Drake Kendrick Lamar beef which are two hip-hop artists that are battling back and forth many winners and losers in this situation but some of the biggest winners are the content creators anybody that creates content on hip-hop culture on um you know music on rap freestyle is making not only getting tons of views but making tons of money and not only that I think it's fascinating that Kendrick Lamar decided to give over streaming rights and allow anybody to monetize reacting to his music or playing his music one of the things that hits react channels to music is they can never monetize because the labels pull back all that money so pretty cool move on Kendrick's part to not just let somebody like go make a 45 minute video playing through his song reacting line by line and then monetize the whole thing for themselves what's the point as I've kind of been paying attention to this conflict between Drake and Kendrick as well as the 20 V1 and everybody else that's in it I've noticed that some of the artists that have kind of hip-hop culture channels hip-hop news channels you know breaking down reaction type type channels are musicians themselves and I've noticed that even during their streams they've got a decent audience that they may promote their song they promote their their work within it I share that with you when you say as an author how could I best use YouTube My question is what kind of if you're if you're gonna go more entertainment you're not teaching other authors How To Succeed as authors then you need to find a way to have like an ongoing show in my opinion or just something you ongoingly talk about out I think that's the approach and then you can promote your own work in doing so my friend rouson KD who is actually one of our speakers at the upcoming grow with video Summit is um he does something similar he reacts to a lot of news reacts to Trends kind of does cultural commentary created a show essentially where he can use the react format but also promotes his own music and launches some of his own side projects I don't know if he still makes Beats but does other things like that um as well so if I'm an author perhaps it's a it's it's revie other books it's it's uh interviewing other authors um it's it's having something that the key is getting super clear on who your channels for in this case let's say fantasy fiction fans and then what would they want to listen to on a regular basis and you then wrap yourself up in that and you know one other example even if you take you could take like a Ryan holiday who has written ego is the enemy and obstacle the way and all these different books but he also built up a newsletter of people that that just love to read historical books he reads books himself he's a major reader not just a writer um in a review review books they talk a lot about stoicism and Marcus aelius and makes all these YouTube videos but then also when he promotes his own books he now has a platform and a place from which to that he's built trust that people are into his recommendations and the conversations around his recommendations he also does interviews with some different people um but it's figuring out your personal brand your themes and all of that deep question I hope some of those insights were were helpful and uh with that I'm excited for this next uh coffee with canel coaching session we're about to have but before we do today's episode is brought to you by summit. thinkink media.com did you get your ticket to the grow with video Summit yet let me know did you hear um we have a three-day online event and we've got a great lineup of speakers including Gary vaynerchuk Patrick B bet David Oli abdall Dave Ramsey Cody Sanchez Nikki Saunders John bra shelene Johnson Pat Flynn Christina Patterson Evan Dido Mary's Nest benaz ATI rouson simply Sherry Joseph Allen and and Brian Griffith all coming at you 3 days towards the end of May get a ticket summit. thinkink media.com let me know if you have any questions about the summit and um we're g to jump into our next coaching session with an an welcome to the show tell us a little bit about your channel hey Sean thanks for having me uh my channel is called catching ma simple and really it started because I was a infielder did you did of you guys play baseball I did you did okay nice um any of you catchers by no no I was not KN for it okay so I wasn't a catcher either and I was a middle infielder uh my whole life and then when I got to college uh my junior year I actually transitioned to a catcher and there was there there were like no resources available and it was really difficult and so anyways one of my buddies he now plays for this Savannah bananas um but he blew up super big on Tik Tok uh when he got signed as a free agent by the Nationals and he tells his dad and his dad like starts crying the super wholesome moment and so then he gained like 17 million followers like overnight from this one from this one Tik Tok and so he's like well I have this big audience he got released he started making Tik toks and then he taught me how to make them and then I blew up right away I got to like second video hit a million 10,000 followers in a week and then and have gone really hard on this since um so yeah my channel is all about catching and then we also started like a baseball camp called not your average baseball camp where we gain where where we really gathered all the other great content creator baseball coaches and we do a camp with them and we're gonna um take a lot of the coaching systems that I've built at catching made simple and scale that across the different positions for infield pitching hitting Etc that's incredible and um I'm excited to uh dive into your questions today where do you want to start so I think one of the things is always just trying to figure out like what is the right question to ask right um the main thing that I see and I'd be super open to hearing your thoughts on this but I really see two main goals for YouTube um I would love to see us get to 100,000 subscribers so and like I think in this last month week they're about 5,000 um and then I also am curious on the on the business side of how you drive traffic from YouTube um I'm I'm like primarily shorts that's where most of my traffic comes from so I like post a link in in the comment a lot of times but I'm driving to three different funnels you mentioned a challenge funnel earlier I have a 7-Day stance challenge that is awesome I've had a ton of people go through that um and then I'm also launching a Super Simple Guide to catching and then also like a low ticket um I'm calling it The Catching Made Simple method mini course and basically it has like my philosophy of how I coach plus a ton of the short form videos all in order because that's one of the things that is sometimes difficult they're like hey do you have a do you have a video on this and it's like well yes I do but it's way back um and you got to go search for it so that's uh that th those are the two questions driving more subscribers and and then driving traffic I love it you know would you agree with this do you think you're already the number one catching YouTube channel in the world yes I I I would say so um I think that there are other resources but no one from what I know of has put together the system like this and no one has gone this hard um on content and created as much and then the other cool thing too right is we have like all these other position specific coaches that are in this baseball um coaching like thing that we're doing together so um so yeah we're like really trying to own that category as a whole yeah you know I actually want to share um something that with think media podcast and coffee with can all that what we just said is really profound and this might be one of the biggest strategies that will surprise prise everybody listening it's kind of Hit It In Plain Sight but one of the things we just noted was that literally you are the number one and there's eight billion people on planet Earth and you run the number one catching YouTube channel for learning for mastering the art of you know catching as far as an important uh field position in baseball well the principle is this right and it's that you narrow down to such a point that you become the only and one of the reasons why I would say you're the number one is I don't think there's any other YouTube channels that have focused just on catching there might be one or two but they haven't stayed consistent so the opportunity for everybody listening to this is to create is to create a niche it's kind of the Blue Ocean strategy and you know I for example um wrote a book in 2014 I think and it was called uh YouTube for churches and all of a sudden when I wrote this book I can say with confidence can you still find it on the internet they don't they they suppress it on on Amazon I don't think you don't buy it let me just encourage you if you're watching this don't buy it what year did it come out so this came out it's 94 pages long came out in 202 2014 what happened though when I launched this book I became the number one expert in the world for YouTube for churches Sean that's arrogant especially as a Christian all right relax it's not arrogant there was Zero other people that even claimed to be the expert so who was number two nobody I was the one of only now I know there's other people doing catching but the the principle that is smart is that you're just you're owning a niche you're dominating a niche by coming all the way down to catching Made Simple I think that's smart smart I think the the thing to consider though is that it also I I 100% believe you get to 100,000 subscribers but the path you're on does have a list if you stay niched in Catching because it's so Niche one of the things that I looked up was like um catching drills which I'm sure you've done this many time and I noticed this paints a picture I think of what's possible you're ranked here um was it catching drills let's see here baseball catching drills you've probably seen uh this guy before I think the opportunity he has going for him is his his channel is baseball tips and advice which Co catching can live inside but it's bigger than just catching what are your thoughts on that by like how narrow you are right now yeah it's a really good question it's something that I've been thinking about a lot because I so I so we have the the nybc right not your average baseball camp and I see that as potentially encompassing all of that the the the only issue is that like all of these creators they all have their own channel and so it's like everyone's kind of like building their own thing but yet we have so you guys are like a collective of different creators that all work together with the same camp yes yeah Lo network of independent people or is there a leader uh it would be me and my buddy that's on the on the Savannah bananas um we we started it and then but then I'm really leading the charge when it comes to because because I've built this awesome atome training program that like I've coached cat catchers in Australia in Canada Puerto Rico like all around the world um through remote coaching and then the way that I've set it up they just progress really really quickly at home with video feedback and so everyone that's done it they're like do you have this for hitting do you have this for infield do you have this for pitching and so I've helped some of these guys build it but now we're really going to like actually build this really really well and I'm going to be much more Hands-On and we're going to run it through nybc um so that's like that that's where I I see that going um and then my buddy you should check his channel out too his name is coach rack um but he's grown extremely fast on YouTube and like last year he sent a screenshot in our little group chat the other day last year he was at like 3,000 subscribers around and this is coach track or no yeah kraak so this is one of my best friends now he's on the span and bananas but so yeah and he's much more Broad in baseball kind of entertaining broad that's makes sense the views can be much bigger right right and so we we collaborate on a lot of videos and stuff um but yeah he has a bigger like audience because he's baseball in general whereas I've kind of Niche to catching and so yeah that's something that I've thought about and I've thought too like eventually I want to do some business stuff as well because there's been a lot of people that have asked me like hey how did you do this how did you build this business how did you set this up um so I want to do that but I'm also I also understand that like I I need to have focus and so um so yeah I don't know if that answers your question completely that's great so just a second I want to kick it to um Brian baby on some tactics for your channel we'll Niche down in your uh your channel a little bit but to to me I actually think a lot of where you're at right now starts with kind of some highle questions like I would say you're already you're you're already experiencing quite a bit of success yes like you got money coming in you're making impact you're transforming lives around the world in different countries you're already 56 like you've already reached viability and a level of stability correct and I have a team too yeah so it makes sense so that like speak so the advice then would would kind of meet you right where you're at for me I think one of the most important things for you to be thinking about right now is one word and that is strategy um there was a point in Napoleon the famous military General's life where he realized he got a little soft because he stopped being strategic and really thinking about man how am I thinking about my next few moves how am I thinking about how am I outsmarting the competition outthinking the competition outmaneuvering outflanking am I still thinking strategic I think you're thinking strategic right now it's the point of being this conversation but I think there's a lot of interesting things you have a chance to build and are already building a very powerful Network which is smart I'd be thinking about how I'm developing that in my mind I'm thinking about though what are some ways to maybe professionalize that having been through just different things in regards to Partnerships and relationships like if it's not written it's not real um you know sometimes contracts could feel like things get it's getting weird with his friends kind of a handshake deal but if you want to build something strong you want to make sure that it's built on a strong foundation with really clear expectations who does what by when I think though you've created a model you've created a system you've created some knowledge you've created IP you can bolt on what you know into one two 3 four five six seven other experts in regards to to baseball's thing that they're doing and help them but in doing so is it clear what the splits are or how that's going to be structured or how that's going to I think you're sitting on you already get it you're doing it something incredibly intelligent but I'd be thoughtful and what are the moves there to me that's you mean you're going Media company and Media company would be multiple channels I think bar stool Sports you know and that's more entertainment this is the education side although I guess you've got your friend who is more entertaining but bar stool Sports has got multiple different shows it's going to come with its own set of you know like playing mind sweeper your own set of like just looking ahead and being thoughtful about is it clear how we're doing this how this is set up and then maybe less is more like I would rather have three r or die really strong people in a network then seven and it was kind of shallow and I wasn't sure and I I didn't have good feelings you know that person's cool but so I mean just thinking through because of getting all that set up um does that make sense yeah yeah that does and we definitely have like a small group with with like a ton of trust because we've worked together a lot now and spend a lot of time in person um but would you see almost like the individual creators coming underneath that n yabc as a whole type of thing or I don't know if it needs to come underneath because in a way in some cases like that rack will be bigger right but but I think there needs to be there needs to be a leader there needs to be who's responsible I'm not a 5050 person I think that it should be at least who's 51 and what I mean by that is as soon as it's 5149 and in my opinion you're the 51 because and and I actually I'm less concerned with what that means financially the reason I'm saying that is what I mean what it means responsibility wise yeah who's the who's like leading it kind of figuring it out just being clear of what the expectations are and in doing so as a result of you saying it's on me I'm carrying the greater weight this is what it's expected of me this is what's respected of you then that should dictate terms um but what's interesting about that is we're also at this level if we're coming back to that one word strategy on this show we would talk about like views and we'll hit that with Brian in just a sec we talk about views and shorts and thumbnails and all this kind of stuff but like to me the biggest most important thing for you to be thinking at about right now is less your next YouTube video in my opinion and is more like the setup of like if we're thinking about true leverage well five people can make a lot bigger impact than one person and although we're nowhere near exhausting co uh catching and how deep you can go on catching that is not your biggest factor of scale I guess that's my point if it's if it's about scale it's going to scale bigger by being broad AEL baseball it's going to scale bigger probably from some other field positions it's going to scale bigger so therefore that's it that's that's kind of where the spotlight for me is if what am I trying to solve and is am I trying to solve 100,000 subscribers and catching the most well you just decide what your priorities are then that's making every possible video remaking the best ones more shorts more stuff being creative cool but the what you just brought up in this conversation was a level of you're like yo I could go Media Company baseball coaching Global multiple people involved that's not going to be any small Endeavor or easy Endeavor but you're already doing it you already have a circle to me it's being I think very strategic with that getting the relationships clear identifying who does what by when leaning into it and then it's a lot of the business op stuff in regards to yes clear call to actions and premiums I'll say one thing before we kick it to Brian you know shorts to me actually can the one way to convert quote unquote is to have a video and give a call to action to the related video because comments are not clickable okay so they made on shorts description links not clickable and links and comments not clickable so if you're trying to get an opt in or something like that off a short it's just difficult it really it it doesn't really work or somebody would have to copy paste it turn it in now let me take it this level deeper the related video doesn't get clicked that much it gets clicked more if you um give a call to action to it but even still it doesn't get clicked that much so like I did this video yesterday um I my related video was how to get 100 subscribers every every day and that's the related video side so it's just like one tactic I guess my bottom line point is though like to me I think of shorts as scale as if if I could just Reach people get some people to go to that related video but also just get awareness to the channel or if could seed in the content itself and do what like one of our um Summit speakers shelene Johnson teaches she teaches curiosity marketing sometimes things are not so on the nose in terms of how we Market meaning if you were doing a short and you're like one of the techniques we teach what's your baseball thing called uh catching M simple yeah one of the things we teach in Catching Made Simple is the concept of the fill in- the blank and let me show you and then it like seeds it and people go what is catching made simple you know um and and just kind of thinking about that top of funnel awareness thing that it doesn't always have to be about and go click a link and enter your email right now but just a lot more like not even really giving a call to action but curiosity marketing is creating curiosity someone goes what's catching Made Simple they click through to the channel they go through the links but if you make a really great short which you're already skilled at doing you get millions of views and what your most viewed short was what 2.5 million views so if you start thinking about or maybe 25 I don't remember but uh and you started thinking about okay if I can get 1% of people curious because some people are just going to watch it and swipe on by but 2.5 million and that's 25,000 people or whatever that that dig in you repeat that over and more and more people are led to your stuff so all of those little tactics we can continue to get to those and those matter a ton but what before we jump into this next phase as we land the plane with Brian is I I think having some exactly how you're thinking about strategy there's a book by Patrick B David called your next five moves like I would literally be thinking on paper what are my next five to 15 moves that is the action item in this conversation and that is and I would give yourself a half a day a day to think about that okay if I get this person signed up I want to make sure I have a clear contract with them okay clear contract clear terms okay what's expected of them and how is that going to and then if we do that is the platform fully ready and if if it's not fully ready can it handle the scale that we want to have okay how are we doing tracking actually that's a problem to solve are we doing tracking for this Channel and that channel okay how are we going to structure the deal are we thinking about how we'd actually exit these what does this look like to unwind this thing like if we if somebody wants out what what are the terms how do they get out of that okay cool um and then in light of that is catching made simple the main driver actually if I if I triple down on these channels then Top Line of the business might be better next 15 moves make sense yeah totally totally awesome um any uh Brian what are you noticing over here as we look at the channel any thoughts in this conversation no absolutely tons tons of thoughts um First Love Savannah bananas uh watch their stuff just like scrolling and I'm like this is so fun backflips and baseball is my thing uh here for it and so but back to your channel let me uh share really quick I'm looking at your channel and some of the things that are coming to mind for me is we have this idea of like how can we um it's kind of like a dart board dartboard analogy right and so like our ideal client our ideal person is going to be the person who searches for the exact video that we have the exact answer to and it and theoretically it leads to the end result like the catching Made Simple uh video right like that's exactly the bullseye but one one of the things that we can do is try to figure out how to expand that search a little bit more to maybe they're not necessarily searching exactly for that but are ideal clients searching for something right here here's what I mean by that I was doing a quick search and I did just like best catching glove just to see what would what would come up because they're they're searching this too they're searching for what's the best catching glove for teenagers or you know for for high school or Varsity or or they're searching for price ranges and like those kind of things as well so for instance like this one I I hadn't heard of this channel before but ball glove King 100,000 subscribers a lot of gear type things maybe you've seen them before but now I'm coming to the point where it's like oh yeah like having a $400 versus $40 video on best catching glove is your ideal client they are searching for that um likely depending on the age their parents searching for it too uh because they like do they really need the 400 do they really can they get away with the 40 and so the buying power is probably searching for this at the same time um and then the the other thing that kind of comes to mind with this is you have a great opportunity inside of these videos to then introduce catching made symol meaning meaning kind of like what we're doing at grow for for this is we're introducing growth video Summit to the entire audience throughout this and what does that mean we're doing placement ads you can do the same thing like this video is brought to you by catching made simple and a quick 20 second maybe 30 second ad of yourself like inside of this catching uh best catchers glove um video as well and so like thinking of Way's strategy right how can we go outside of the box of what we're currently doing to expand a little bit still on the target audience and then introduce some of these things that are very specific to um uh again your ideal audience which I I think that could be a good route like what are the other things they're searching for they're searching for specific gear uh they might be searching for um not just the glove right they're searching for all the equip potentially as well um you could go very educational you can go edutainment with these as well you could go Mr Beast wise and say will this glove stop a cannon like you just you could go like insane that way I don't know if that's ideal but literally the the options are endless right like you can go very educational and solve people's problems on what's the price point on the gloves to entertaining a ton of people I think I the one that probably moves the needle most for you business-wise is probably going to be the educ entainment or education base and answering those those problems but um that yeah that's that's a route that I'd really consider going does that make sense to you totally yeah and so branching more into the equipment side to gain the traffic and then using those views to then say hey by the way if you're looking for this you're probably looking for coaching as well if you and if you are looking for coaching go check out our Channel where we look at all the different things that you need to know in order to be a varsity ready catcher exactly and so you're just like yes they're searching for it and you're introducing those things as well and I'm looking at like your you know your channel obviously you guys are posting a lot 39 videos in the last 30 days which is incredible and the the mere exposure like showing up in people's feeds very often I think even looking at like from the video perspective looks like maybe from like a Tik Tok perspective grabbing some of these videos posting him there and then bringing him over potentially uh which I think is great I think uh just introducing even more of maybe these long form searchable type things that are always going to be showing up um uh in the long run as well so it looks like about a month ago is probably the last I don't know exact month ago last post here on a long form I would love to see more long form um on top of the shorts that you are already doing and and it goes in with what Sean was talking about as well in a sense of those related videos they they need to be relate to something they need to be able to go to some place and what long form video can we try to get those people to uh at the same time as well so that makes so much sense Brian because that I mean that's really the newer funnel if you think about it rather than so like because I have like a blocking checklist and the 7-Day stance challenge as like my lead magnets but it almost makes more sense like what you're saying is instead of linking to the lead magnet link to the top five blocking mistakes um from like a blocking short to a long form video on that and then that links to the lead magnet have you seen lots of people do that uh Lots is probably relative of a word but I think they're the best people right like those are like the people that are starting at the top of the funnel and spend the most time with you like they're going to be the the mo ones most likely to purchase right we we do see when we say do related videos it's not going to make a break unless you have an incredibly viral video and it's like I wish I would have had that on there like I wish I would have been able to to add this to the to the video when it had 2 million views right then it becomes like I wish I would have done that um end of day for most of them they're just going to do average there's gonna be a few clicks may maybe 1% of the people end up going to the other video um and then watching that for the long term uh but for those ones that you're like really wish I would have is when you're like yeah I should I should just make it a point to relate to something at the end of the day yeah yeah cool absolutely thanks thanks Brian that's that's helpful and I like the push on long form too I think that's a good idea do you have a few takeaways and action items today I do so doing some more equipment review um as well as just other we've done some keyword research already in terms of what are the main things that we need to do for long form we just haven't done it yet so pushing go on that but then really uh thinking thinking through strategy that was super helpful Sean I I really appreciate that um maybe even picking up that Patrick B David book but um yeah I think I think the thing is really in my mind to figure out like what do what are the details look like of like how do you structure something because this will be the first time that I've really done that um in terms of like bringing other people in how do we talk about the splits all that kind of stuff we've talked about that a little bit but I do think that that's something that we need to uh get more clear on and I probably need to go find another resource to help me do that better that's that's probably one of my top action items coming out of this amazing such good way to uh unpack some of that and so much value in this conversation so we appreciate you coming on today and uh excited future is bright excited to see how your channel continues to grow and this whole movement that you're building as well well thank you Sean I appreciate it thanks Brian thank you all right Brian well we have some Q's coming in and we have some A's summit we're here to help speaking of questions the jockey box asks I want to start a weekly show almost like sports center but f focused around the automative world is The News Room style dead Brian is The Newsroom style dead that sounds like a no for me I mean honestly there's there's go to any gym and what's playing on all the TVs is The Newsroom style like Good Morning America all of the yes Good Morning America any sports center yes Sports all the shows it's I I would say it's not dead I think it's not a a a matter of does this work or not I think it it matters of are you going to work it like are you actually going to put into practice everything you need to in order to make it work right like you're doing the research ahead of time you are planning these things out ahead of time you have a good idea uh about it like you're not calling your Automotive show live stream that you end up doing the automotive show as the title you know like that's that's not going to make it work uh you're not going to do that you're going to figure out like what's the the it's a little bit different because a lot of things that we teach are going to be more like ranked uh are going to be more of how can we make this work this video work for us for the long term I do think on a newsroom style it's G to be more of a uh uh Trend surfing type content that you really have to build on it's not going to be the only thing but that's going to be the thing that really moves the needle most for a channel like this so is it dead no I just think you have to be really strategic about it and understand that you have to be strategic about it you can't just post a video and say sweet I did it I think that what I would also say here is one of the most important things content creators need and entrepreneurs need and maybe actually actually and your mother-in-law needs is self-awareness self-awareness is a super power self-awareness is so important we've all met somebody who's Maybe a little bit delusional and this is my conviction it's possible for anyone to succeed on YouTube but when you've got strong self-awareness it's going to determine your approach to how you succeed on YouTube are you going to try to be the influencer and because of your charisma and Beauty you're going to grow that way are you going to try to be the educator and resource and maybe you don't have the looks or the Charisma but you just have the knowledge and you know how you're going to be POS positioned are you people say I've got a face for radio is it going to be a faceless Channel you could still succeed is it going to be um and so I'd be thinking through self-awareness but in specifically The Newsroom style that is going to be predicated on entertainment value Charisma ability to juggle a conversation probably some humor probably the ability to go live maybe like what like communicate extemporaneously and here would be the bottom line I think what some people do is they're hard on themselves because they go why can't do what like Sean and briyan are doing right now well if you if you're not just being hard on yourself but that's true well you could still win you should just play according to your strengths so if you are incredibly patient you love researching like one of the most viral forms of content right now is mini documentaries or video essays and the superpower behind creating a strong video essay is curiosity about the subject willingness to invest 10 20 30 hours into it the footage and the stories in the b-roll and maybe add one skill and that is video editing and voiceover narration and all of a sudden you could be a viral success just are you willing to be self-aware and so it using the B baseball analy I think we brought this up on a previous coffee with CLE but I heard about you know the five tool player in baseball they call it five tool how many um five tool is someone who can do it all there's no weakness to their game five tool players are very rare and the five tools are hitting power hitting for average field ability throwing ability and running speed well what do I mean here well if you were going to do a News Room style do you have Charisma do you have super deep knowledge of the stats do you have um a lot of stories to tell and you're a good Storyteller do you have looks going for you and then when you also say like sports center who else is going to be on the show and now now this is where it gets a little little uncomfortable Brian because there's self-awareness but then you're also going to have to judge your friends or the other person on the show if you make an honest assessment of your co-host how where are they at right now or the other two people you're going to do it with because again I'm all for like starting no one's a 10 when they start we all start before we're ready we start messy but if you're like a two and like that person just is probably not a good Sports Center host the two's probably never going to be the seven they need to to actually make it work so just this is kind of the hard conversation of I think it will absolutely work and then what I would you know argue Brian is the flip side is if you assess how many tool of a content creator do you have where do you score in fact I'll kind of like look this up I I wrote down I never got to it but I wrote down some advanced advanced things to study as a communicator it's going to take me a second to look that up but what are your thoughts on like that self and then one other thing I want to throw out there is my my guess I don't know about this person my guess is who's the other person I don't think that I think the solo round is hard to pull off but if you look at a Brett Cooper daily wire you know you could say that that's Trend based which it is but I would say it's also very it's trend-based but it's search based in the sense of she talks about now content clearly trending but like searchable like searchable topics like everyone's looking for a particular thing and if you did this over certain plays or certain games or certain whatever I mean yes she's back by the daily wire but her rise to four million was meteoric and so the downfall of punk rock I mean that is a niche conversation like that is color analysis you've been dressing wrong this is interesting because that's three days ago but that that could get views for years actually so even whether it's the topics but by the way she is a solo individual so I think what this person is saying is like can I just get on and riff and react to like what's Newsroom style I and I think that sure what are your talent skills and abilities but I think making oneoff strategic topical videos as an individual related to sports would be a a better strategy in my opinion Brian what are your thoughts and I'm going to look up those uh advanced communication skills but but drop some thoughts on me yeah no I I I 100% agree I'm actually curious with Brett Cooper just as like a Insight because I haven't really watched much of her stuff if she's pulling if these are like literally one-off videos like I've made this video with the intent of color analysis and I've done the research study and I've done all this work or if it's a part of a live show segment where she talks about it and it's clips kind of like how we sometimes will do with with the coffee with candle show and so that that's another thing to consider too uh for all the those listening and and the person ask the question is is strategically thinking you could riff but I will tell you with the amount of Channel audits I've done and the amount of channels we've looked at nine times maybe 99 times out of a 100 those that do live shows or podcasts or videos and want to riff don't end up working out and it just it is what it is they just get to a point where I'm making the content I'm putting in the work people say I need to put post 300 times a week or 300 times a month and so I'm posting the content sure but was there intention behind it was there a goal behind it how strategic were you with that were you just talking and hoping that somebody was on the other side of the camera or did you like we were just talking about with with and he was saying I did I'm doing the keyword search like I'm doing the search on what keywords am I searching for or people searching for what am I trying to rank for and that that goes with shows as well like Newsroom type shows um even if it's I'm going to spend the next hour and a half and I'm going to Riff on different subjects if if you haven't done the research or put in the the leg work to try to find the topics that that you actually want to talk about uh I don't know if the video is going to do well or even if the content afterwards is going to do well it has to be really thought through you have to think through with the end in mind from the very beginning I even think about when you did with Patrick P David and those interviews it could have been Rift like you know like you could have been like here's some questions that we could ask or we think with the end in mind of what are the topics we want to talk about how can I ask them in a clear way and have that as content that works even after this video is posted on different types of content later so um yeah I think strategy is really important and thinking with the end in mind um not riffing for riff sake 100% And competition is highest for low effort content and I I I hear a little bit of that when people want to do Newsroom style or react style is like I just love WWE or I love sports or I love movies and I I just want to talk for an hour and so like to get the authority that you could build a big audience for people to just listen to your thoughts there just a big gap I know that's appealing the flip side is to your point Brian the research I mean doing the seven r like starting with the nmi and reverse engineer actually doing research outlining your video actually recording it putting it all together releasing it the right way it takes a way more work it's not it's not low effort it's it's the opposite of low effort it's intentional effort it's strategic effort and I think that it looks like Brett is doing some new type of content like this is an actual different style than I think she normally does here there's clearly a higher production value there um but what I think is also interesting is rather than than just being like Today's show today's the today in sports like you're going to gather an audience that just watch his Sports Center because it's Sports Center sniper topics gives you such a better opportunity and so like she's jumping on they took the boy out of Boy Scouts and that's good that's polarizing it's triggering it's got people divided it's got stuff happening so that's and and if you're a variety show or you're not cutting out Clips in some way and she's making these one-off videos as that that's a big opportunity as opposed to like today in media could have been the title and she could have covered a bunch of things so it's a very specific thing even though and it's a now this would be more trending again this might get viewed for a while who knows anyways uh I will say this I promised I wrote down what are what are Mastery level on camera skills Mastery level on camera skills we mentioned being a five tool player there's probably some overlap in these but in baseball if you're good at hitting and you're average in hitting and you're fielding and your throwing and you're running if you stack it all up very few of us have all these skills but if you're committed to the content creation game a couple things I wrote down Charisma likeability camera presence confident delivery humor V verbal skills body language you're being interesting not boring complex Things Are Made Simple in your teaching style you're entertaining you're adaptable you have have improval skills improvisational skills teleprompter script reading if you were to use a teleprompter your naturalness and using it curiosity and passion enthusiasm enthusiasm thick skin and acting ability there's a few overlap in there but remember Mastery level skills sharing all that wasn't meant to overwhelm because someone might be like I suck at all those like what's the hope for me remember self-awareness is like well if you just it's not about charisma but it's about finding the right topic teaching a practical video staying in your current ability and adding value according to the level that you're out I really think you could dominate right now but if you were asking me Sean what are some types of skills I could read on get coaching on and improve on I think if you uplevel your charisma if you uplevel your likeability your camera presence your content delivery your humor your verbal skills your body language if you uplevel any of those things it's like Vanessa van Edwards there's another episode we could link up in um in the uh show notes is Vanessa van Edwards for example talked about verbal cues psychological tricks to instantly boost YouTube views and be more charismatic on camera this is the work that content creators should be doing is be thinking about okay how can I start today start before I'm ready get 1% better start uncomfortable you know your first videos are your worst videos yes but how can I also commit to improving and getting 1% better and this is that other I feel like this is the unspoken side that there's not a lot of stuff out there about on camera Mastery it's about titles and tags which is important as well but how you're showing up on camera Brian any final thoughts on that before the next question yeah I think the last thing that that even comes to mind is if you're hearing all of this and you want to do it but you're unsure just post videos like just get better at the skill don't let anything that we're talking about here vent you from giving it a shot trying it out getting messy starting where you're at and just level up your skills pick one thing and that's the next thing right so if you're if you're whatever whatever it is if it's like I need to figure out how to be funny on camera maybe pick that as the next thing or charismatic or I need to figure out um any of the other ones that Sean just mentioned just pick the one thing figure out whatever it is that you need to figure out work on that as your next thing don't get overwhelmed by the 16 that go for that next one that's good Brian way to bring it home way to bring it back all right a couple uh rapid fire questions as we are laying the plane today uh when wanting to start a business is it good to start a YouTube channel even if you don't have a product to build your personal brand or should you wait till you have a product Ryan it's kind of entirely up to you does the chicken come first or does the egg come first only God knows did God create a chicken or did God create an egg we don't know maybe we do what's the theology there but um so if you want to start a business back to self-awareness self-awareness is a superpower what's your current income Ryan what's your day job what's your current priorities do you have a family do you have kids how much time do you have for your side hustle what's your ambition for your channel how much money do you want it to earn a year how much time do you want to spend investing in it what are you willing to sacrifice to build your YouTube channel and grow your your YouTube channel um if you if we were having this conversation Ryan you and I three years from now and everything in your professional life and your personal life was 10 out of 10 like you just you hit every single goal and objective in three years what would be happening what would you be feeling and what would you be experiencing what's funny is sometimes we want YouTube success but would you take you YouTube success if you had Mr BEAST's schedule would you really well I don't know what Mr B's schedule is you know he's kind of known to work nonstop to work until burnout then recover for a few days and get back to it to obviously do things like I you know like I don't want to be buried alive ever let alone for a video would I do it one time would I keep doing it there just good questions that sometimes we don't ask the hard questions so if it comes down to both is the answer I think do you want to start building the following first do you want to actually build the product first I would say that all things being equal Ryan the people who I've noticed that win have a propensity for action and they don't just get stuck in analysis paralysis or overanalyzing they do continue to learn and get advice and get coaching and get wisdom but they do it while taking rapid action so I think it's it's good to start because also one of the reasons if you have kind of a generally clear North Star to some of the questions I answered like I would like to make this much a year this is the niche I want to be in this is what I want to be doing then you start and as soon as you start you can start getting feedback as soon as you have a few subscribers you have a community Tab and your community can give you feedback you want product feedback you want insights um for example our YouTube course called video ranking Academy was started in 1.0 video ranking Academy was started in 2016 so eight years ago I recorded I realized I had ranked videos meaning I create search based content that when people type in a search they find the video connected to ways of earning passive income namely affiliate marketing at the start as a backgrounded video tech YouTuber and I built a six-figure income ranking videos understanding how to find video topics how to create and optimize videos I came up with seven steps of how I did this all seven of those steps are actually have existed since video ring Academy 1.0 but there was no pretty graphic like this there was no pretty graphic I wasn't even on camera the original course area I just used this software called Camtasia I recorded a PowerPoint PowerPoint slides and I taught through the first version of video ranking Academy I got it the point was I got a messy product to market now when I say messy it was people were pumped it was also it was about uh 30% it was about 70% cheaper than it is now it was like an early you know get in and grow with me like you get lifetime access that doesn't there's some people locked into lifetime access but you it's now a membership that doesn't have lifetime access because I keep updating it you know right and our team does so what's the point was I'm just glad I I started it I got it to Market and in entrepreneurship we call this MVP minimum viable product so that's I think a big key it needs to be the minimum viable product when I say get it get it to Market wasn't on camera but the information was still solid I wasn't it wasn't pretty but it was a real framework that really worked that I had really tested and built out for many years and it the slides and the look and the the the Facebook group and the sport and Brian and everybody else that's a part of it now they they weren't here also like so there was also like it was solo Creator season so just in answer your question I think a propensity towards action a propensity towards get something to Market and here's my point fast forward to today it's you could no longer we don't use numbers anymore but it it's probably video R Academy 4.0 it's been re-recorded rebuilt a a workbook this didn't exist at first there was no workbook now there's an 80-page workbook now the framework looks and by the way what's fascinating about actually having a framework is even up on our upcoming Summit my way of teaching V right now it's the same seven hours but the levels of insight maybe my ability to teach it some of the new angles on it it's actually always improving and getting better and I'm teaching through all seven of the steps in my sessions live during the summit as well Gary Vee and some of those other guys are kind of cool but honestly this will probably be the best stuff I mean Brian will tell you it's pretty good I had a friend I mean it was a friend so of course he gonna be biased but he was like bro out of everyone that spoke your stuff well and mind you obviously some stuff is inspiration and some stuff is tactics but some stuff is strategy and I think the fact that you're actually getting getting a seven-step unbreakable framework that you can apply not just to YouTube but to any channel anyways what's the point Ryan point is um the the sooner and and before I launched video R Academy I started my YouTube channel I started building my email list I started growing my following I started building my personal brand should I have waited I don't think in a way I don't know I don't know if it matters although what I will say matters is I think if you're waiting until you're ready ready you're going to be waiting your entire life because you'll never feel ready you'll never be ready you got to just take the minimum viable product take action punch fear in the face punch perfectionism in the face and press record and then improve as you go that's the nature of Entrepreneurship Ian asked do you have any advice for a family Vlog Channel with a terminal medical diagnosis and I did ask Ian what the medical diagnosis was and he got back to me reason I asked is I think think what I would do is lean in on the medical diagnosis um Ian said it's uh let's see muscular it's specifically Duan muscular dis distr distrophy DND so if you if you look that up I think understanding that YouTube is a search engine um I think that I would lean in on the diagnosis itself we've never done it my wife and I but I've thought about this a lot and that is her chronic illness called gastroparesis and I've thought about it being this this actually might sound really funny to say but this is why you're here is I'm like I mean it's a way to turn lemons into lemonade is like and and this this could get taken out of context but like I I I think you should take this bad situation and and make something good out of it and even specifically I think you should profit from your pain in an ethical way there's the quote you should profit from your pain in an ethical way make sure to quote the whole thing when we think about Cody Sanchez had a quote at our event and it was we're not in the vitamin B business we're in the painkiller business she means business own period that a lot of times what people want is they want to be alleviated from pain as opposed to like getting pleasure this is what is why we sell more painkillers than we sell a vitamins okay well I am not minimizing very serious illnesses but if you have an illness let's think about this thousands hundreds of thousands or millions of other people around the world also suffer from that illness that illness becomes an opportunity to be used ethically meaning if you can provide support resources like like so for example you could take gastroparesis which is the chronic illness my wife has let me take one that I have tentis tenos repetitive stress injury repetitive strain injury especially my right arm I've been on an eight-year Journey dealing with chronic pain at levels as high as 10 and these days thank God levels at zero one two or three because of a whole journey I have been on in regards to my personal health I also am not comparing tendon and myof fash issues with some of the other stuff out there not that anyone thought I was but here's my point is that if you just think about like gastroparesis which is what my wife has if you think about feeding tubes recipes blog like recipes for example there's whole there's 56,000 views on this best tips to manage and live with it Friendly Foods and diet so what's interesting is again you can monetize your pain in the sense of it could be brand deals affiliate links but we we trying to help I think media purpose-- driven people that just also understand that it's possible to make a living and make a difference because the views that you get on your videos the um brand deals that could lead to the Medical Solutions it could lead to and and I think the key word here is you're not trying to exploit this you're just trying to see this is how entrepreneurs think entrepreneurs see problem is opportunities and understand that that's the only way people do business in general is is they solve problems for a profit so what's a problem a medical problem a health problem and what are the problems that chronic illnesses or medical diagnosises also start how does this affect your marriage it's unlimited stuff to talk about so having a gastroparesis show or having a chronic illness show or having specific videos so I guess a couple things Ian as I land the plane when I go family Vlog channel the stuff we're looking at though is is a lot more searchable like the like to do an ing a a smoothie ingredient is not a vlog or what I eat in a day with gastro pris is kind of a vlog um but it's a little bit more specific in search based and that's where I would go if I was you and and to try to be full circle on this thought if I shut down think media and I shut down think media podcast if you wonder like what is Sean going to do next um one of the honestly businesses I've thought of starting is an RSI business repetitive stress injury why because it's been my own experience I've I've probably invested 20,000 hours already in RSI the I got red light therapy behind me which scientifically proven does actually penetrate beneath your skin into your muscles not just for recovery but to some level of nerve repair um you know check me on that but just different things is why Ben is AI and different video or Academy students again what's my point I think that when you have been given something that's like uh you know a challenge a setback I think it's an invitation from God to keep praying keep searching for answers to do the research and then what I realize is legitimately and I know that I want to tread lightly because I know that different diseases or different things have different ramifications how hard they are but bottom line is I've been a journey where I've been at slathering my arms at with CBD Menthol lotions because I was in a level 8910 pain and laying in bed for two hours in the middle of my workday to now being sometimes at a zero that's serious progress and that right there is what literally entrepreneurship is like if you could help someone's pain in starting a YouTube channel and figuring out how the algorithm works and take their pain from a 10 to a three and like I get it now two totally different things but it's still the thing like how do we move people away from Pain towards a solution and then what are some things that you could do so anyways you could tie it into your story as a vlogger but I I'm not the biggest fan of family Vlogs in general don't get me wrong like they're cool but I think if you're trying to bring people around in your journey some of the best Vlogs are IVF Journeys like different people having trying to go through pregnancy and get pregnant people do like following those if there's a narrative there I think you can build an audience I think the other side is literally you build a brand around around advice wisdom diets supplements you might be able to have interviews with doctors interviews with different people that are working best recommended books best recommended resources and talk about being Mission driven another example is Dr Andrea ferland one of our VRA students quite literally helps people with chronic pain and her exercises that she does online too she doesn't do a vlog has tutorials on exercises and how to you know uh deal with nerve entrapment and carpal tunnel and all this different stuff so anyways I hope some of those thoughts um were helpful smash like if you're um getting some value today you know one of I was at our uh event at our Platinum Party and someone told me they came to grow ay live 2022 they took 17 pages of notes they had a business helping people f fial myalgia they're doing about 50k a month which is might sound like a lot which it is but if you have like a business and a team and they actually did some like in-person therapy and different stuff for fibromy they did these Retreats anyways since Grow video live they did 1.6 million um in their business uh with some of the stuff that they learned from there but anyways it just made me think of fibromyalgia which is something that my wife's mom has as well good morning morning Trevor always good to see you um we've ranked the videos as they don't exist outside of the big farm world world I like that I also think uh yeah that's that's great I think looking into adjacencies of what other things because maybe certain I know for gastrus is not huge I think five million Americans have it so you also are sort of thinking about the Tam the total addressable Market of it all and things like that as well well listen we are coming up on the top of our 2hour stream today today's episode is brought to you by summit.in media.com did you get your ticket for the summit yet if not why not that's a legitimate question um what is your what's your objection H like I'm getting like getting like what's your objection huh um I'm like yo patri B David brand new no Patrick B David hasn't spoken on content that I know of this year let alone and is at a all-time high in terms of the impact he's making Gary vaynerchuk's new book is out by the way uh it's not quite out yet but you can actually get a copy of Gary vaynerchuk's book at the VIP level and Cody Sanchez's so imagine getting a copy of Gary's book mailed to you and a copy of Cody Sanchez book mailed to you and 30 days of replays and some other cool bonuses that's the VIP level if you also want to go super uh you know or the general mission level you could do that as well at 47 bucks so summit. thinkink media.com what are you thinking did you already get your ticket you on the fence you busy already know it all your YouTube channel is too big you have too much money like let me know what the biggest problems are that you have uh what kind of Parts would you suggest me as a carard channel do as a showcase I mean to put it in affiliate parts so yeah when I'm doing affiliate marketing I actually one place I like to start you could start on Amazon and I'm curious like if you start with the end in mind I think the power here is to start with like the end product in mind so the ideation is coming from Amazon and I'm curious like what's best selling but also I think if yeah if you go car parts it's interesting because it's going to be more rare for there to be something that is you know very specific for a wide enough amount of cars still good like if you could find like you know I don't know Budget Car Parts online that's still going to be broad that might be like the best place to buy there's that's interesting the best place to buy car parts mechanic secret that's a fascinating but anyways what I like to think about is what is Broad like it this could be I actually bought this guy I'm pretty sure I have this exact thing I use it for my uh Tulie double stroller for my boys and jogging stroller because it's got pretty sick Wheels but yeah you know you take something like this best um portable air compressor if I want to earn money with affiliate marketing I want to be on Niche but also have some level of a of a uh broad appeal and like this is going to apply to anybody with a vehicle and like globally so not only did this video looks like it did pretty good I also wonder it's kind of like a faceless video so this this world is ripe for disruption meaning it's mainly faceless channels like this looks a little bit more it's still it's doing good so is this one okay this one makes more sense so like just if we look at what we're finding here this top video is probably made by some who doesn't own any of these air compressors just to be clear they use other people's content OPC they use Boll they use the manufacturers pictures the manufacturers videos they just link through they edit the video well they write a script they affiliate link it up they don't even affiliate link it up I guess they kind of tie in like YouTube shopping this is an interesting strategy they tie in YouTube shopping which isn't very helpful because the items are out of stock but you can still get this from Home Depot I'm guessing that's a YouTube shopping affiliate link and maybe this person is getting 10 or 12% let's see here Home Depot YouTube shopping YouTube shopping percentage affiliate program um somewhere on here is the Affiliates and they'll tell you how much some of them are kind of are are pretty good you can get 10% 15% however I it's still not I still like Amazon a lot better because these are out of stock it's only Walmart and Home Depot it's no I don't think Amazon even does it and Amazon's where everybody wants to shop come on Jeff Bezos what okay what's the point anyways um yeah so as far as car parts I was gonna say and by the way close to a million views compared to this this is the one though there's a long way of saying that humans the biggest threat to AI is humans and what people are going to want is these faceless videos especially related to product reviews they're going to want like actual people who reviewed the product so if you could this video I can't even imagine how lucrative this video is so this video hits a couple different compressors there's all our affiliate links products tested in the video ranking like crazy broke down the different things and and this is what we all want don't we this is what you want this is what I want we want to know the person who actually tested it out and not some faceless video without I'm not I'm not even disrespecting these faceless videos it's literally the top rank video and this person didn't have to buy any compressors but at the same time I understand that other people's reviews can make a good final video but just nothing beats experience and for your reference as we land the plane today if you haven't watched the video um that I did a while back on coffee with canel the the new Google Formula it explains why what I'm talking about is so critical so if you go into the thick media podcast Channel which you're on right now and you go to like the video shorts live tab the first 30 minutes of this is critical this Google reveals ranking formula every YouTuber needs to know and it just kind of reinforces why humans are the biggest threat to AI while at the same time you got to master AI as well if you know what I'm saying and if you're saying what I'm knowing um and so awesome I'm glad you're getting value Swedish Car Guy appreciate you for
