in this video I'm going to tell you which of these luxury SUVs is the best and to start off we're going to compare their prices the Porsche kayen range starts from £76,000 this is the E hybrid version and as tested with options this car cost £ 10,865 the BMW X5 starts from £ 7,685 the X Drive 30d M sport tested here with options actually cost $3,745 though thankfully through K you can save an average of £ 4,256 off a BMW X5 the Mercedes J starts from £77 360 though this one is the 450d AMG line premium plus and as tested with options this Mercedes is 91,9 the Audi Q7 range starts from £ 65,0 195 though this 50 TDI Quattro launch edition with options is £ 83,5 125 however through Kow you can save an average of £ 7,442 on a new Q7 finally we come to the Volkswagen tarig the range starts from £ 69,1 150 though this R plug-in hybrid as tested with options is £ 89,1 through carw you can save an average of £ 4747 of the twareg this Volkswagen tware R uses a v63 l turbocharged petrol engine M2 electric motor it's plug-in hybrid combined you've got 462 horsepower 700 Newt M of torque four-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic gearbox this Audi q750 TDI has a 3 l V6 turbo diesel which puts out 286 horsepower and 600 NTM of torque it drives all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox this J 4 450d has a 3 l straight 6 turbocharged diesel engine with a little electric motor which puts out 22 horsepower and combined you have 38 89 horsepower and 750 newm of torque it's got 9-speed automatic gearbox and of course four-wheel drive this BMW X5 30d has a 3 l straight 6 turbo diesel puts out 298 horsepower has 670 Newton M of torque drives all for Wheels 48 speeed automatic gearbox finally we come to the Porsche Ken e hybrid and like the Volkswagen it's a plug-in hybrid and it uses a petrol engine in this case it's A3 L turbocharged V6 just like in the twar m to electric motor in an 8-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel Drive however it has more power than the twareg because it's a Porsche of course 470 horsepower and 650 NM of torque now if you're finding all those numbers a little bit confusing don't worry I've got you covered so I've actually compiled a special page which explains all the cars different engines which is the best one according to me and which trim level to go for you can even compare the deals on different cars available through carw so if you want to check that out right now just click on the pop out Banner appearing in the top right hand corner of the screen or if you're watching on a smart TV just follow the QR code which is on the screen now that'll take you to the carb website and all your questions will be answered this Porsche has a Deployable tow hitch so if I press this button here sounds like it's grinding coffee there it is the speed of the tow hitch isn't very porsch like while you can get all the cars here with an electric tow hitch the BMW is the only car that gets a lovely split folding tailgate so if I press this the lower part comes down gives you a nice place to sit and I like the way when you close it by pressing this button again up here does the bottom part as well like that if you get the seven seater version of the Mercedes J to fold down the rear most seats you do it manually which doesn't feel very Mercedes like but at least you can fold down the middle row by pressing this button here in the boot go on it is not the fastest system in the world but elet why you what's going on why you coming back up it's also not the most obedient system in the world either don't know what that was about with the Audi the rear most seats are electrically operated look so press that and down they go look whereas the middle row isn't so you then have to going to a reach around to fold down the rear seats in the tware you pull these levers it's manual but it works apart from the fact that sometimes it doesn't if you don't grab it properly and look look at that you end up having to climb in anyway to put the buggers down what's that's an now with all these cars cuz they got air suspension you get a little button somewhere which allows you to change the ride height there so I can lower it down like that to make it easier to load things in and out or if you're old you know to get out of the car after you've been in it turn the boot there we go considering the prize and that this is the sportiest version of the TW eg it all just seems a little bit so what doesn't it and it's kind of highlighted by the design of the grill and way it goes around the lights sort of like a mask reminds me of Robin from Batman and Robin and as we all know Robin's just a little bit crap the ad Q7 just looks like a big fat hatchback it's like someone just drew the shape and the board signed it off so like oh it's okay it's full has the B joh front it will sell and they're right the car that I think would look best on your driveway is this Mercedes GL I really do like the look of it especially in the black works well with the Chrome just don't don't look at this bit don't look at that ignore that get out get out get get out of it get out of it just ignore it I can't quite make my mind up about the BMW there's a lot going on which is sort of interesting but at the same time it's a little bit awkward bit like me Porsche is the kind of company that comes up with a car design then likes to just kind of keep it the same evolving it slightly for each generation unfortunately with the knen they started off with a car that was very very ugly and so they've continued that theme and you know that's coming from someone who actually owns a knen they're not attractive and this one there's something a bit fish like about it question is though is it a shark or a bottom feeder I really like the interior design of the Porsche kayen it's simplistic you still have physical buttons for the climate control well done Porsche well done quality is very good though you do have to spec the extended leather for £22,000 extra otherwise you get a cheap feeling polyurethane Dash which is just so wrong in this car another thing that's a bit wrong is the way that you have the start button over here hidden behind the steering wheel and then you have the gear select over here once again hidden behind the steering wheel they like that do like this though Drive select modes easy to get out cuz they are on the steering wheel driving change no problem as with the outside of the BMW there's a lot going on here on the inside as well though I do generally like it all apart from one thing the fact that you have to do too much stuff through this bluming touchscreen like the climate and everything ah loving the shape of the screen though looks cool material quality is very very good in here and I especially like the two-tone leather black and Brown is just working so well together I'm a little bit undecided by the interior design of the Mercedes so there's some things I like such as the general layout is all fine you've got separate climate control buttons there I love the gear selector here on the steering column but then there's other things I don't like such as the materials themselves in places just so cheap and horrendous for a car of this price massive bezels around these screens makes it feel oldfashioned but the worst thing of all is the leather here on the seats the way it's all wrinkled have they made it from scrotums the interior of the Audi is potentially the most Germanic it's kind of straight line simple decent there's not much to complain about really apart from some of the shiny bits of trim which seem to be like glaring in my eyes which is not good I think this has the worst seats though they're the least supportive as with the BMW there's a lot going on here on the inside of the Volkswagen tware though not so much in a good way also I don't like the touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel you get them in the Mercedes and they're annoying there but I think they're even worse here then some of the materials are a little bit cheap as well and why are they given it such a unnecessarily huge gear select look at the size of that it's almost like you're grabbing the alien's head look at the shape of it weird there's loads of room here in the back of the Porsche knee room head room stretch out you can slide and you can recline very very good in the BMW knee rooms easily sufficient head rooms really really good now you can't actually recline or slide the seat but it's not too much of a problem because the actual position is bang on anyway it's also really nice and comfy this deep bench the only issue I have is that you can't really slide your feet underneath the chair in front quite as far as I'd like to however I can let the car off that because I really really love the huge back windows this is the car that you get the best view out of in the back and kids will like up the Mercedes GLE has knee room for days head room is a little bit tighter though however I can recline the chair to give me more Headroom and I do it electrically any car the does it lies this out is just so practical knee room is fantastic head room is also fantastic and look slide yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and recline actually you can recline further than in the other cars and look stretch out under there this is luxury this is and it has something the other cars don't you can do the same with the middle row individually plus isopix isopix totally normal but also isopix and more isopix as well tegg okay head room really good knee room lots of foot space comfy seats reine and Slide m good what surprised me is that I think that the BMW is the least good in the back seats the Audi is the best closely followed by this tweg and the Porsche when it comes to caring three adults in the back at once the Audi was the clear winner thanks to its three separate seats all the other cars were much closer matched but if I was to order them though in terms of preference for K 3 in the back at once I'd go big BMW followed by the VW then the Porsche and finally the Mercedes there's enough room here in the third row in the Audi so come around operator Miguel over I love Miguel he's got himself comfortable he's moved the seat so he's absolutely fine aren't you Miguel yeah and you know I've just about got enough kneo I'm all right back here head room's all right as well and because the seats tumble forward there is enough space to actually climb through into the back it's quite impressive really oh and look even more isix here so 1 two 3 four five six if you have six toets po you but you you should get yourself an aq7 for sure cuz there is no other option really apart from a mini bus the Mercedes is just not as good in the third row as the Audi it's just not let's head room let's need room with him in his comfort position and I want to show you another problem hop out if you wouldn't mind Miguel so H Le we mind just running around and letting Miguel out because we sort of left the um child locks on hey fre okay so this is the issue now the Audi you just tumble the seats forward manually this is electric you know it feels more expensive but it also takes too long and the access as you can see isn't quite as good as it although this BMW doesn't have it the X5 does have an option of a third row of seats for an extra £1,650 however to have those extra seats being BMW forces you to add various other packs and options so if you really want the seats you have to pay an extra £6,000 into o all now we're going to do a luxury test and to do that I'm going to rank how nice the doors are to open and close on each of these cars last place is the BMW front door sounds okay but the back door is just next place is the Mercedes the handle's a bit front door sounds [Music] solid back door's a bit of a let down next is the Porsche it's let down by a really cheap sounding handle because otherwise that is nice handle again is bad but the back door listen it's okay surprisingly the twar IG handle is good and oh that sounds good too even the back door is satisfying the only thing that lets it down is look no soft clothes whereas the Audi and all the other cars have satisfying soft close but overall yes it is the Audi that wins because handle is good and the door oh it's just so well insulated same with the back door oh yeah feels nice sounds nice it's nice are you a company car driver if you are I can save you the bother of watching this entire video just get this Porsche Ken plug-in hybrid reason being if you compare all the plug-in hybrid versions of these cars the porsch actually works out the cheapest per month in benefi in kind tax so why wouldn't you get it it's the most expensive car to buy outright but the cheapest foring Min car drivers you'll be mad not to however if you're buying the car with your own money the outcome could be different so keep watching want to sell your it before 2016 and back then I was oh my god what have they done with this car it's just comfy it handles well it's quiet they've nailed it and obviously over the years they've like honed it and improved it ever so slightly and it still feels just as good do you know what if you to just get in this drive it you go you know what we'll take it it's great love it really is a good all round capable car thing is though I've got to do my job so I'm going to pull some bits of it apart first will be the engine and gearbox slight delay when you put your foot down it's not the quickest to respond you also get a little bit of from the diesel engine but that's about it handling wise I can't really fault it this one's got rear axle steering and you notice that when you go into a turn it just starts turning quicker than you'd imagine not in a sort of frisky what's it doing kind of way but more in a oh just helps it get around the corner kind of way it feels just as capable as it did back there the only problem is that today it's got some serious serious competition in much newer Vehicles so this twg shows its basic platform with the Audi Q7 so you think they'd be pretty identical to drive and in some ways they are and in some ways they're not you see this is the plug-in hybrid version of the twareg and as result it's quite a bit heavier 2.5 tons as opposed to 2.1 for the diesel Audi that's quite a difference and you notice it just feels heavier and a bit more cumbersome you also feel it in the brakes as well they're just squigger because you also have that whole regen effect blending in with the brakes as well it's just not as good so everything feels a little bit more DED and slower even though this has a turbocharged V6 petrol engine not a diesel like in the Audi when it's going though it seems to pull pretty strong and obviously being a petrol engine it's smoother though there's definitely a bit more of a delay with things happening because you've got the gearbox Engine with that bit of Turbo lag and the electric motor all having to like figure out what each other's doing to work in harmony but it actually drives pretty well comfy quiet it's very hard to split them you know if this was the diesel the Dynamics would be very very similar however there is one thing something about just being s in this just feels like I'm in a slightly taller golf I'm not feeling the specialness that you get with the Audi so while you might go and drive this think yeah it's not bad I quite like it if you back to back it with the Audi that car just makes you feel a little bit more what should I say successful like you've achieved something I mean that does sort of come down to Brand perceptions but it's it's just the design it's just the materials it's just everything about this the whole Volkswagen ethos comes through in this product you know Volkswagen car the people at this kind of price point and in this kind of class you need a vehicle that makes you feel slightly elevated above the people and this car doesn't quite do that the weird thing about the Mercedes is that I think it proves that sometimes better isn't always better worse can actually be better you see in many ways the suspension on this car they all have air suspension by the way feels a little less composed than in the other two cars I've driven so far but that gentle kind of rocking and movement is ever so slightly soothing and it actually gives this car quality a feeling expensive however the floors actually give it a certain quality of heft not actual weight like you get from that tweg because it is so darn heavy because of the hybrid system more just a feeling that you are driving a substantial vehicle something that's expensive if I put this car sport mode and I've done this with the other two cars to just check the handling I would say it is the least Dynamic of the ones I've driven so far just leans a little bit more I don't feel so confident in pushing it as fast even though it's not quite as heavy as that teg but I can easily go way faster than the speed limit so no one is ever going to drive it like this so when you put it back into Comfort which is where this car belongs and you drive it like you're going to drive on the road it just feels like a Mercedes should do and then there's the engine this diesel engine is absolutely brilliant loads of power very responsive the gearbox is on point all these hybrid systems and stuff no really in this kind of car all you want is a good solid Diesel and this is one of the very very best diesel engine automatic gearbox combinations so far uh the cars I've driven the one that I'd like to drive home is this one but maybe that could be about to change one thing that surprises me right away with this BMW is that I thought I'd prefer its engine and gearbox combination than the Mercedes granted it's really good the Mercedes is slightly better where this winds out though is that you get very similar levels of comfort to the Mercedes you know the way it just feels solid expensive yet it doesn't quite have the imperfections I think it's more composed so the way it goes down the road is better than the Mercedes although I don't massively prefer it but if I'm trying to judge the car for how well they've been set up this is slightly better and it does handle better as well I'm in just a normal driving mode here I want to go into sport that'll make it a bit sharper stop it leaning so much in the bz and it definitely feels sportier than the Mercedes oh I really like that Mark and I thought you know that's the one I'd have but in terms of the drive I'm now preferring this it feels like a big chunky SUV which is what you want yet it has added agility compared to the Mercedes so you can do both things and yeah I know you're not going to drive as quick as this but there is just something super sophisticated the way this thing goes down the road really really like it and so now this is my favorite of the lot to drive but there is one more to test finally then the Porsche kayen being the hybrid immediately you can sense the weight of it 22 tons the suspension feels good it feels like solid it feels nice I tell you what I don't like which is odd in a Porsche the brakes it's the hybrid system though you know cuz the regen blending with the normal brakes just feels inconsistent though it's quite surprising how it grips and goes around corners despite all that weight feels quite Dynamic the way it turns and I'm just in like the normal hybrid mode what's it going to be like if I go into sport good thing about this car it's so easy to just whack it into sport let's go Sport Plus this is interesting so despite all that weight when you have this car in its sportiest setting it really does change the character of it completely and the way it drives like if you want to go quickly this is by far and away the best the composure of the car when you're just throwing it through some bends the way it puts its power down you can feel the tire are scrabbling for grip the noise from the engine being a petrol is obviously just nicer and you got some revs to play with doesn't feel like there's any like miscommunication between the hybrid system the gearbox and all that kind of stuff like I got from the Volkswagen from a motoring journalist point of view this is the most fun to drive by far but it's all a load of nonsense because you're not driving like that you're with your family you're in hybrid mode and this is how you drive it and then it just feels slightly lumpier than the BMW because of the weight and I don't know really at these speeds whether I actually would prefer the normal petrol version than the BMW so for just normal driving I think I preferred the BMW and in some ways that Mercedes had a slightly more luxurious feel to it even though it was nowhere near as composed when you want this thing to drive like a Porsche it drives like a Porsche and it's incredible when you want it to drive like a smooth comfy relxing SUV it can do that but it's not really any better than the others with big luxury SUVs performance does matter so to compare these cars we're going to do some drag racing we going to do it in two races first the Diesels then the plug-in hybrids I'm in the BMW 3 2 1 oh the BMW shot off but now the Mercedes is coming because it has more horsepower and it's absolutely pulling past now to be fair you can get a faster version of the BMW diesel that is the quickest version of the Mercedes diesel but this BMW is definitely ahead of the Audi o la la so round two with the hybrids but we thought we'd put the fast this diesel in just as a benchmark here we go 3 2 1 wow that tar was off the line like you would not believe but now this Porche she going past where is the diesel in all of this dered okay so the hybrids may be heavier but they be quicker so then what exactly happened well the Porsche one it completed the standing quarter mile in 12.9 seconds the Volkswagen took 13.1 seconds the Mercedes 14 seconds the BMW 14.2 seconds and the Audi was last with a time of 14.4 seconds so then what's my final verdict well in last place is the Volkswagon don't get it as this plug-in hybrid it's too expensive get the diesel but even then it doesn't feel premium enough considering how much it costs speaking of which the Porsche it's just too expensive and you can't get a diesel which is what you want with one of these SUVs unless of course you're a company car driver now objectively the Audi is the best car overall but subjectively it's not because it just looks too me whereas the Mercedes objectively isn't quite as good as the Audi but it's just got the I wanted Factor however so does the BMW and overall it's a better car than the Mercedes and that's why it wins this test I hope you enjoyed the video if you did give it a like click on the video Windows to watch some more videos and if you want to find out the best deal on one of these cars I've configured it myself then just click on the car while logo
