Disinfection and Cleaning of Suction Systems

Importance

  • The suction system is highly contaminated with germs and dental materials.
  • Contamination can lead to biofilm formation and reduced performance or failure.

Routine Cleaning and Disinfection

  • Daily Disinfection: Use Aurra Toll Plus from Der Dental.
  • Weekly Cleaning: Use MD 555 Cleaner from Der Dental.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear PPE and follow safety directives.

Pre-Cleaning Process

  • Rinse suction systems with 2 liters of cold water before cleaning/disinfecting.
  • Disinfect suction handpieces before attaching to Oro cups.

Spittoon Cleaning

  • Clean between patients or before cleaning/disinfection using MD 550.

Disinfection Process

  • Solution Preparation: Follow manufacturer’s instructions for dosing.
  • Prepare up to 2 liters of ready-to-use solution in the Oro cup care system.
  • Suction: Use 1 liter per treatment unit.
    • Position Oro cup upright for first liter, horizontally for second.
  • Spittoon Disinfection: Use at least 250 ml solution.
  • Exposure Time: Adhere to manufacturer’s specified exposure time.
    • Do not rinse with water during exposure time.
  • Post-Disinfection: Rinse with 2 liters cold water prior to first patient and after exposure time.

Cleaning Process

  • Acid Soluble Deposits: Use MD 555 cleaner to dissolve deposits like scale or prophy powder.
  • Cleaning should be done 1-2 times weekly, preferably during lunch breaks.
  • Solution Preparation: Follow manufacturer’s dosing information.
  • Suction: Use 1 liter of cleaning solution per unit.
  • Spittoon Cleaning: Use at least 250 ml solution.
  • Exposure Time: Essential to adhere to specified exposure times.
    • Do not rinse with water during exposure time.

Important Notes

  • Always rinse with 2 liters of cold water prior to any cleaning or disinfection.
  • Maintain a minimum interval of 2 hours between disinfection and cleaning to avoid neutralization of products.
