Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship Practice Standard (Revised 2006)

Therapeutic Communication

  • Standard Statement: Nurses use effective communication strategies and skills to manage the nurse-client relationship.
  • Key Indicators:
    • Introduce self by name and category.
    • Allow clients to express themselves without diminishing feelings or giving immediate advice.
    • Inform clients about the care team role and information sharing.
    • Be aware of verbal and non-verbal communication styles.
      • Example: Arms crossed may appear disinterested.
    • Use communication resources as needed (e.g., translator, pamphlets).
    • Recognize all behavior has meaning; understand client behavior in context.
      • Example: Client refusing food may be fasting for religious reasons.
    • Engage client in discussions about post-relationship care (e.g., discharge planning).

Client-Centered Care

  • Standard Statement: Nurses ensure professional behaviors and actions align with the client's therapeutic needs.
  • Key Indicators:
    • Include clients and significant others as care partners.
    • Identify client goals, wishes, and preferences for the care plan.
    • Recognize the impact of the nurse's ability to maintain a therapeutic relationship.
    • Acknowledge biases and feelings, request care transfer if necessary.
