Using BD SafetyGlide Insulin Syringe with 8 mm Needle

Key Features

  • One-handed safety mechanism to prevent needlestick injuries.

Preparation Steps

  1. Remove the orange safety shield.
  2. Rotate the safety arm to ensure the unit scale is visible.
  3. Wipe the vial with an alcohol swab.

Preparing the Syringe

  1. Pull the insulin syringe plunger down to the desired units.
    • Ensure air in the syringe equals the insulin amount needed.
  2. Puncture the vial center at a 90° angle.
    • Prevents needle damage.
  3. Push the plunger down completely.
  4. Turn the needle and vial upside-down.
  5. Draw insulin by pulling the plunger to the desired unit mark.

Selecting an Injection Site

  • Recommended sites: abdomen, thigh, buttock, and upper arm.
  • Rotate between and within sites.
  • Ensure injections are a fingers width apart.

Administering the Injection

  1. Disinfect the selected skin area.
  2. Lift a skin fold for injection.
  3. Insert the needle at a 90° angle to the skin fold.
  4. Press the plunger slowly and steadily until injection is complete.
  5. Withdraw the needle maintaining a 90° angle.
  6. Release the skin fold.

Post-Injection Procedure

  1. Activate safety mechanism:
    • Use a one-handed technique to move the safety arm forward until extended.
    • Listen for a clicking sound to confirm activation.
  2. Dispose of the syringe in an approved sharps container following regulations and institutional policy.
