Definition

  • Devices connected to the computer to output information provided by the CPU.
  • Known as output peripherals.
  • Outputs can be electronic display, printed materials, video, audio, and tactile forms.

Types of Output Peripherals

Monitors

  • Function: Provides electronic display.
  • Features:
    • Screen size (measured diagonally).
    • Resolution (measured in pixels).
    • Energy efficiency features (e.g., screen savers, low power standby).

Printers

  • Types:
    • Dot Matrix Printers (Impact Printers):
      • Prints by hitting paper through an ink ribbon.
      • Features: Slowest, cheap, low cost per copy, rare color printing, low quality.

      • Uses ink cartridges to print.
      • Features: Fast, medium cost, high cost per copy, color printing available, high quality.
    • Laser Printers:
      • Uses electric charge and toner to print.
      • Features: Fastest, expensive, medium cost per copy, color printing available, highest quality.
    • 3D Printers:
      • Creates models from digital designs by adding layers.
      • Time consuming.

Plotters

  • Draws high-quality drawings from digital designs.
  • Uses computer-aided design software.
  • Uses a pen to move on paper to create designs.
  • Used by designers, architects, engineers.

Data Projectors

  • Used in home entertainment and school presentations.
  • Features:
    • Light bulbs with various brightness levels.
    • Resolution quality varies.
    • Zoom functionality.
    • Portability varies (newer models are smaller and lighter).

Speakers

  • Outputs sound.
  • Often come in pairs for stereo or surround sound.
  • Common in home entertainment systems.
