What is Lymphedema?

  • A condition where fluid builds up causing swelling in body tissues.
  • Common areas affected:
    • Arms
    • Legs
    • Head and neck area

Mechanism

  • Blood circulates from heart through arteries and returns via veins.
  • Lymphatic fluid separates from blood, filtered by lymph nodes.
  • Lymph nodes located in head, neck, armpits, and groin.
  • Fluid is filtered for harmful substances before returning to the heart.

Causes of Lymphedema

  • Secondary Lymphedema: Damage to lymphatic system due to:
    • Surgery (e.g., cancer treatment)
    • Radiation
    • Infection
    • Trauma (e.g., fractures, severe injuries)
  • Primary Lymphedema: Congenital or genetic factors causing abnormal lymphatic system development.

Symptoms

  • Swelling in affected limb or body part.
  • Heaviness or tightness in affected area.
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion.
  • Skin changes (e.g., thickening or hardening aka fibrosis).
  • Recurrent infections due to increased risk.

Management and Treatment

  • Lymphedema is chronic with no cure but manageable.
  • Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard treatment:
    • Phase One: Reduction Phase
      • Aims to decrease fluid and congestion.
      • Includes compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, exercises, and skin care.
    • Phase Two: Maintenance Phase
      • Maintains control of swelling after reduction.
      • Uses compression garments/bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, exercises, and skin care.
      • Other options: pneumatic compression pumps, kinesiology tape.
