some of our major donors are some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world like Netflix and bik dance there's no traditional campus at manura University I would encourage people to take some risks stay motivated things that you are very curious about and passionate about I think tend to be the things you're good at and I think taking those risks often lead to much greater successes in life [Music] I'm Mike McGee the President of manura University well I I think we are very selective at the moment we're a small University and we get many many applications so we only take a few of the people who apply to manura University but we're growing so I hope many more students will be able to come to manur University soon and I think for some of for some students around the world we probably are better than Harvard University we are very interested in young people who want to be problem solvers and Entre entrepreneurs and Future Leaders yes some of our major donors we're lucky to have are some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world and they have founded companies like Netflix and bike dance I think they're inspired by the idea that we're building the world's Premier Global University where students from over a hundred Nations come to learn together and where the best future ideas for new companies and products and inventions can emerge from a university set setting well I was very happy that we the last 2 years have been ranked as the most Innovative University in the world I think what we've done is create three integrated innovations that make us totally unique we have a new kind of pedagogy an active learning pedagogy where you learn in small seminars that are dialogue based you come to class prepared and you engage in discussions that actually help you remember more information but also help you build skills secondly you take all of that information and skills and immediately apply those skills to projects that you're working on that you're passionate about in cities all over the world and thirdly you're living in the world's most Global undergraduate community and you are living in cities all over the world where you are immersed in the culture so the combination of those three things excellent classroom learning project based learning and culturally immersive experiential learning is what makes minurva University un our headquarters is in San Francisco but our students live all over the world all of our students spend their first year in San Francisco where they take our Core Curriculum and then they spend semesters in cities all over the world in Soul and Berlin buenos Iris hydrabad taipe we want them to have that experience of living in some of the world's most culturally and economically vibrant cities no we have small seminars every one of our classes is under 20 students and all of our faculty are trained to teach the way that we think is the best um and we only have our seminars on a virtual learning platform that was designed for our University so if you're living in learning in Soul you can get on our virtual platform and take classes with your classmates who are living in Berlin or buenos Iris and then you will take all of that classroom learning and apply them to projects that are taking place in Soul that are supported by our faculty and staff it's not like typical online learning because every class is taking place live every class is discussion based and so our students actually build stronger bonds with their classmates and with their professors than they do at typical universities where they might be taking lecture classes with a 100 or 200 or 500 students one of the things that all of our students say is that when they graduate from manura University they've actually built lifelong bonds with their professors I it sounds like it means that feeling of fulfillment and euphoria that you get when you're working on something that you love to do I love my work I wake up every day excited to go to work well I would say I find my work very inspiring because it's something that I've been very passionate about my whole life I have always loved the way that schools can bring young people together from many different backgrounds and help them to feel a strong sense of belonging and community and be excited to learn and manura University is doing that on a global scale so I find that very inspiring and I like working on the problems that we need to solve at manura University to grow our model and create opportunity for more students but I also believe in work life balance so I have hobbies I like to spend time with my children and sometimes I do things away from work so that I can recharge and come back to work with a great deal of energy you yes of course I've I've failed I think all good leaders have experienced failure and had to learn from failure when I was about 44 years old I was only sleeping 4 hours a night I got very very sick and I know now and I tell this to young people all the time every bad decision I've ever made as a leader I made when I was exhausted so I try not to be exhausted anymore I try to make sure I sleep enough that I eat well that I I exercise I have routines even when I'm traveling around the world that I've built over the years to make sure that I stay healthy I love building things that's when I feel most fulfilled as a worker so when I left my academic position as a professor to lead my first nonprofit organization the first thing I did was build a school I I built the building I hired the principal and one of my favorite days in my whole career was when 76 kindergarteners 76 5-year-olds walked into that building for the first time that made me feel very very good about what we had accomplished sure I would say I I made a big career change when I was 36 years old I left my academic job which at the time I wasn't finding very fulfilling to start a brand new organization and there were many things I didn't know how to do I didn't know how to finance and build school facilities for instance and I could have been full of self-doubt and thought to myself I don't know how to do this I shouldn't take this risk um but instead I took quite a big risk um and it changed the course of my career so I would encourage people to take some risks in the direction of the things that they're passionate about because I think that it usually works out quite well you stay motivated things that you are very curious about and passionate about I think tend to be the things you're good at and I think taking those risks often lead to much greater successes in life so if there's something you would like to do especially at a young age go and try it and usually good things will come from that yes well we can all always learn more you should go to manura doedu and explore and make sure that we are the right University for you we'll tell you everything you need to know about how to apply [Music]
