Understanding Copy Command in AutoCAD

Hello, my name is Randy Dobson. I'm an instructor here in the Houston, Texas area. In this video, we'll be covering the copy command in AutoCAD.

A fairly simple command, but still... has its little things that we need to know. Obviously, the copy is just to leave the original there and make copies of it. So I'm going to start the copy command. And, of course, down here it says that the command line selects.

objects and let's just say I'm going to select this rectangle if that's the only thing I'm going to select and now it's asking for a base point which I will go over in more detail but I'm just going to click right up here that's where I'm grabbing it from and I copy it to here and the copy command will keep going until you know if I just this is all I want to do I hit escape and I'm done okay fairly simple but you can copy more exact if you use your ortho. I want to go to copy again, select object, hit enter, and now when I turn my ortho on with F8, if I want to come straight down and I want to do it 48 inches, then I've copied it exactly 48 inches. Then if I want to go this way and type in 48 inches, that really wasn't enough let me go 72 inches get rid of that so I can copy exactly if I'm using ortho to go straight up and down and where your base point is this will become a very important thing in your move command, your rotate command, your mirror command. Different commands will refer back to a base point or rotation point. But the copy is one of the commands that also continues I'm going to start it again let's just do this line and hit enter turn my ortho off and see I can just sit here and select I'm just copying it'll keep copying as many as I want to do okay and I'm just I can go on forever and ever I just hit escape and that takes care of copying for that line when you get into your object snaps if you haven't already you can copy something to an exact point I'm going to start the copy command and I'm going to grab this rectangle and then I'm going to go to the end of the corner of this and then it's asking for the second point I'm going to go to this corner so there I've copied it exactly to those corners and I will tell you on older versions of AutoCAD when you copied it would only copy once and stop stop but the more recent ones the copy command continues and continues again if you start the copy command and I'm going to grab this circle say I grab it from the center point if I come over here and I'm just I want to put five of them and then I'm done you can't just move to the next command you have to stop this command so you just hit escape and then that takes care of the the the copy command this This is all empty down here, and you can start your next command.

And that concludes this video on copy. Thank you.
