1. Clean hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer. 2. Before handling the PN bag. 3. Before and after cleaning work area and PN mat. 4. Before and after gathering supplies. 5. Before starting infusion. 6. Whenever hands may be contaminated.

Do not use the PN bag and contact your healthcare provider or pharmacy for guidance.

Improper handling can lead to contamination, resulting in infections or other complications for the patient.

To check for particles, cloudiness, discoloration, or leaks which could indicate contamination or instability of the solution.

Check the name, volume, ingredients, and expiration date.

The work area should be uncluttered and cleaned with warm soapy water or antimicrobial cleaner.

TPN refers to Total Parenteral Nutrition, typically administered in a clinical setting, whereas HPN stands for Home Parenteral Nutrition, designed for use at home.

Dispose of the used syringe in the sharps container and gently rotate the PN bag to mix.

To ensure all additives are mixed thoroughly with the PN solution.

To disinfect the port and prevent contamination when injecting additives.

To prevent contamination of supplies and maintain a sterile field for the PN preparation process.

The solution should be milky if it contains lipids.

Connect the PN bag to the infusion pump and watch the instructional video for Kerlin or CAD infusion pumps.

IV tubing with filter, flush syringes, alcohol wipes, syringes with needles, infusion pump, sharps and trash containers.

1. Remove caps from vitamin vials, wipe rubber stoppers with alcohol wipes, air dry. 2. Attach needle to syringe, draw air into syringe to 2 ml mark. 3. Inject air into the vial, withdraw contents into syringe. 4. Inject vitamins into PN bag after cleaning the injection port.
