Lecture Notes: World Record Diamond Mining in Minecraft

Introduction

  • Speaker's goal: Beat the world record for most diamonds in Minecraft in a month.
  • Strategy: Use machines instead of traditional mining.

Phase 1: Building the Machines

  • Plan:
    • Use machines to mine diamonds instead of manual mining.
    • Aim to build 50 machines that can mine two stacks of diamonds per hour each.
  • Material Collection:
    • Spent hours gathering materials: redstone, observers, pistons.
    • Additional challenge: Collect 150 pieces of ancient debris.

Machine Assembly

  • Initial Setup:
    • Use TNT to clear space for machines.
    • Built 50 machines, worried about their functionality when scaled up.
  • Operational Test:
    • Faced issues with placing a sticky piston incorrectly which almost ruined the machine.
    • Corrected the mistake and machines began working as intended.

Phase 2: Diamond Mining

  • Initial Success:
    • Machines successfully mined diamonds, often yielding one to three diamond veins per operation.
    • Encountered a new problem with gravel potentially damaging machines.

Challenges

  • Technical Issues:
    • PC blue screen caused all minecarts to fall off machines, needed fixing.
    • After 5 hours of mining, collected 1848 diamonds, realizing it wasn't fast enough.

Expansion

  • More Machines:
    • Increased number to 70 machines, then considered building vertically.
    • Created a beacon to aid in manual clearing without TNT to avoid damage.
  • Materials and Construction:
    • Extensive resource gathering continued over several days.
    • Building second layer of 70 machines encountered mistakes causing explosions.

Phase 3: Advanced Machine

  • Research and Development:
    • Built 'The Big Machine 2000', a fully automatic device with 200 TNT dupers.
    • Required thousands of materials, took days to gather and assemble.

Operational Difficulties

  • Machine Malfunctions:
    • Various parts of the machine kept breaking, requiring constant repairs.
    • Eventually faced major breakdowns and needed to rebuild entire sections.

Conclusion

  • Outcome:
    • Decided to mine the remaining diamonds manually.
    • Successfully set a new world record after consistent manual effort over 1.5 months.
  • Credits:
    • Inspired by Wombo's previous record attempt.
