Antifungal Medications Overview

  • Purpose: Treat Candida fungal infections.

Common Antifungals

Azoles

  • Examples: Fluconazole, Ketoconazole
  • Treatment: Nail and skin candida fungal infections.
  • Key Point: Azole - think nail (N for Nail fungus).
  • Administration Duration: 2-6 weeks.
  • Side Effects: Very liver toxic (avoid in liver disease).
  • Note: Azoles do not treat STI infections.
  • Contrasts:
    • Azole treats nail fungus.
    • Dazole treats gut bacteria (e.g., Metronidazole).

Amphotericin B

  • Usage: For serious fungal infections.
  • Side Effects: Causes significant side effects (especially renal injury).
  • Important Notes:
    • Creatinine over 1.3 indicates poor kidney function.
    • Urine output of 30 mL/hr or less indicates renal distress.
    • Oliguria is another term for low urine output.
