Alpha-1 Blockers for BPH and Hypertension

hello visual Learners if you struggle with keeping the medications for a benign prostatic hyperplasia straight in your head I've got you today we'll be going over Alpha One blockers and memory Farms top 200 drugs made easy coloring books if you're ready let's color and learn [Music] alright guys if you've been on this channel for a minute you know I love to talk about receptors well guess what today we're going to talk about Alpha receptors knowing this will be a game changer for you and it's something they don't emphasize enough of in school first off there are two types of alpha receptors alpha 1 and Alpha 2 but we will focus on alpha-1 receptors today you need to know that alpha-1 receptors are located on vascular smooth muscles such as blood vessels pupils urinary sphincter and the prostate when activated they lead to smooth muscle contraction such as constriction of blood vessels the medications in this class all and in the suffix ocean such as doxazosin terazosin tamsulosin [Music] thank you here's how you can remember it with this visual think of the smug looking alpha-1 receptor saying oh sun which sounds similar to the suffix endings for this class osin you're looking at the number one alpha for Alpha One receptors this helps you connect that these medications are alpha 1 blockers the drugs in this class are all indicated for benign for static hyperplasia or BPH doxazosin prasosin and terazocin are also indicated in hypertension let's go over some fun branding tips as they will hint at the drugs indication for example Flomax helps maximize flow in BPH same goes with the medication rapid flow hydrant is the brand name for terrazosin and looks similar to hypertension mini press is the brand name for prazosin and helps minimize blood pressure some contraindications to keep in mind since these medications lead to vasodilation of blood vessels they can cause orthocytic hypotension and syncope especially with the first dose these medications may increase the risk of intraoperative floppy Iris syndrome in patients undergoing cataract surgery it is conditioned resulting from the loss of muscle tone in poor pupil dilation and billowing of the iris so how do these drugs work remember in the beginning I talked about how alpha receptors are located in the vascular smooth muscles including the blood vessels and prostate well in patients with hypertension alpha-1 blockers work to inhibit Alpha adrenergic receptors causing vasodilation or opening up the blood vessels and this helps to lower blood pressure in patients with BPH the prostate gland is enlarged which can lead to uncomfortable urinary symptoms due to the blockage of urine out of the bladder that's where these drugs come into play they block alpha-1 adrenergic receptors in the prostate and bladder neck tissues from restricting this causes a relaxation of smooth muscles alleviating urinary symptoms in patients with BPH alright moving on to side effects visualize this mnemonic the alpha one is saying my head feels weak well why because remember the most common side effects with alpha blockers is low blood pressure and dizziness especially when rising from a sitting or lying position too quickly as a result the first dose is often taken at bedtime so what does head stand for H is for headache e is for edema of fluid retention due to its vasodilatory effects A is for abnormal erection as these medications can cause pre-opism a painful and persistent erection D is for decreasing blood pressure or hypotension and W is for weakness or fatigue some counseling points to be aware of take these medications at bedtime to minimize side effects especially the first dose since this class of drugs can cause dizziness headache and drowsiness avoid activities requiring coordination until the drug effects are realized this means no late night trips to Wendy's after taking a dose of this medication also you want to remember to rise slowly from sitting online position due to the orthostatic hypotension report painful erections or pre-opism that do not go away to your health care provider all right guys let's take a minute to review because repetition is the key to success again for our visual anchor for Alpha One blockers think number one alpha he is very smug before but now he is sad because he has hypertension in the BPH which is no fun [Music] [Music] hope this helps you remember the indications for alpha-1 blockers now how do they work alpha-1 blockers inhibit postsynaptic Alpha algeenergic receptors in two ways the first way is in the prostate and the bladder neck tissues by blocking alpha-1 receptors here it leads to smooth muscle relaxation and alleviation of urinary symptoms in BPH the second way is that they block alpha-1 receptors and blood vessels leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure foreign [Music] because of their mechanism of action some of their side effects make sense remember our mnemonic for their side effect yep that's right head feels weak H is for headache e is for edema fluid retention A is for abnormal erection or priapism D is for what again you got it D is for decreasing blood pressure hypotension D can also be for dizziness W is for weakness or fatigue all right let's look over some of the main key points you want to counsel your patient to take this medication at what time of the day yes that's right take it at bedtime to minimize side effects especially the first dose you want to remind your patients to rise slowly from lying or sitting position as it can cause orthostatic hypotension and lastly you want to avoid abruptly discontinuing this medication as it can cause rebound hypertension all right guys that's it for today if you found this helpful click that coloring book I will leave a link to the product Below in the description and I will see you in the next video
