hey yo okay so are you still with me so let's talk about adverbs the angry Cowboy will probably meet his friends outside the Relevant Word here is probably okay is this word probably acting like an adverb okay what properties um does an adverb have okay here we go with the adverb distribution tests number one an adverb cannot follow seem or become on its own so like I said this is where adverbs and adjectives differ and so if you are not sure if something is an adjective or an adverb try this test okay so uh once again okay probably okay so like what is probably so once again like you want to think about like the original sentence you want to like turn this into subject seems adverb right and so that's the construction that you're shooting for so you want to stick to the original context as much as possible so I would probably think about like what that adverb is sort of modifying like what kind of event it is modifying in the original sentence probably what's happening probably uh meet his friends outside probably right is what we're talking about here so I would try to like change it somehow uh so that that becomes the subject of the sentence so for example the cowboy meeting his friends outside seems probably okay the cowboy meeting his friends outside seems probably okay and so I've made that sort of meeting event the subject of the sentence here um or the cowboy meeting his friends became probably question does that sound good or bad right descriptively in the English language the answer is that sounds pretty bad right and so scenes probably uh okay so this is good news if you want to show that this is an adverb okay in fact it tells you something which is that it's not an adjective it's an adverb here okay so one sort of advice about this test let's say that the example sentence was the plan seemed absolutely impossible the plan seemed absolutely impossible so you might look at this sentence and go oh absolutely does come after scene so this must be an adjective in this sentence is that correct or is that incorrect that is an incorrect conclusion because right and so you have to use the word in sort of uh the sentence final position right and so if you have something like the plan seemed absolutely the plan seemed absolutely okay that is the relevant test that is ungrammatical so therefore that's an adverb it's acting like an adverb in that particular case at least okay right so just because it comes after it doesn't necessarily mean uh that it is an adjective and so be careful okay um number two adverbs can often appear between the subject and an auxiliary it doesn't always work and so don't give up if it doesn't work it does often work and so uh original sentence the angry Cowboy will probably meet his friends outside okay so you want to move the word probably uh to the position between the subject and the auxiliary okay and so the subject is the angry catboy right he will do so right that's the he the subject right there so will is the auxiliary verb right and so what you want to do is move the probability between these two expressions the angry Cowboy probably will meet his friends outside that works okay um and so that's good news for us that is an adverb property number three um adverb cannot take a direct object okay so this is like um adjectives and nouns again and so verbs take direct objects prepositions take direct objects but not the other categories so let's just stick the it in here okay and so the angry Cowboy will probably it meet his friends outside no good and so that's good news and so this test should produce an ungrammatical sentence um if the word passes this test okay um number four is a pretty weak test but an adverb often contains the l y suffix and so the ly suffix for adverbs is a very productive affix in the English language it creates a lot of adverbs out of adjectives in English and so uh this is a freebie because uh it already has one in there right so probably meet his friends outside and so note that it often contains l y That's the test and so for this test look at the word that you're given ask yourself does it contain l y that's what you want to ask yourself the test is not you can add an l y you're not adding it you're looking at the word that you were given and asking yourself if it already contains an l y or not okay uh warning um there is anotherly in the English language that produces an adjective and so they seem friendly they seem friendly okay notice that friendly has the l y in there but it does follow the word seem indicating that this is an adjective right so a friend only is an adjective probably is an adverb okay so be careful about this so this is why it's important that you try the other test so I would say for number four like okay if your word contains l y start by trying some of the adverb tests okay and then if the rest of them work great right if the rest of them don't work um definitely try some of the other category tests for example the adjective ones okay so this is a good starting off point it's not a particularly strong test though in the next video let's talk about prepositions in their distribution tests okay see ya
