Sketchy Micro: Salmonella Lecture Notes

Presented by Andrew

Overview

  • Focus on Salmonella species: Salmonella typhi and Salmonella enteritidis.
  • Common sketch theme: Salmon Dinner

Common Features of Salmonella Species

  1. Motility
    • Salmon tail flopping
    • Salmonella is motile.
  2. H2S Positive
    • Black plate representing growth of black colonies on Hecto-inaugur plate.
  3. Encapsulation
    • Glass dome over salmon dish.
  4. Acid Labile
    • Needs high dose for infection.
    • Lemon slice to indicate acid sensitivity.

Salmonella enteritidis vs. Salmonella typhi

Salmonella enteritidis

  • Chicken (main reservoir)
  • Inflammatory Diarrhea
    • Shown by chicken lighting a candle.
  • Type 3 Secretion System
    • Represented by turkey baster near chicken.

Salmonella typhi

  • Seagull (represents gallbladder, place of chronic carrier state)
  • Typhoid Mary
    • Represented by seagull with apron, covered in red spots (rose spots on abdomen).
  • Osteomyelitis in Sick Cell Patients
    • Exposed salmon bones and sickle in seagull's hand.
  • Pea Soup Diarrhea
    • Bird droppings colored like pea soup.
  • Treatment
    • Fluoroquinolone (Flower on table).
  • Live Attenuated Vaccine
    • Syringe in the leg of the seagull.

Intracellular Lifestyle

  • Facultative Intracellular
    • Within macrophages (bird cages with doors open).
    • Macrophage association (M5 symbol).

Visual Memory Aids Review

  • Salmon for Salmonella
  • Motile (Flapping tail)
  • H2S Positive (Black plate)
  • Capsulated (Glass dome)
  • Acid Labile (Lemon slice)
  • Salmonella enteritidis (Chicken)
    • Inflammatory Diarrhea (Candle)
    • Type 3 Secretion System (Turkey baster)
  • Salmonella typhi (Seagull)
    • Rose spots, Typhoid Mary (Apron)
    • Osteomyelitis and Sickle Cell (Exposed fish bones, sickle)
    • Pea soup diarrhea (Pea soup droppings)
    • Vaccine (Syringe)
    • Fluoroquinolone (Flower)
  • Facultative Intracellular in Macrophages (Bird cages, M5)
