serotonin antagonists serotonin affects emotions affects our motor skills it can also stimulate nausea okay so this particular class of medication is a serotonin antagonist so mechanism of action says blocks the five ht3 receptors in the gi tract and chemoreceptor zone um that's just a subtype of serotonin receptors okay therapeutic effects and indications so we look at this for prophylaxis of chemotherapy uh sorry prophylaxis for patient receiving chemotherapy because they're going to have related nausea due to it and vomiting also prophylactically in the treatment of just nausea and vomiting in virtually all settings but typically more you see it work really really well for the patient who is on chemotherapy and has that chemotherapy related nausea vomiting side effects could be headache dizziness diarrhea nursing actions we're going to assess therapeutic and side effects practice and patient education right so basically how they should be taking the medicine we have what's called ondansetron that's an orally disintegrating tablet the trade name to that is zofran what you're going to see here in our drug examples in a minute um so with that we want to talk to them about the packaging that they don't swallow this tablet it goes underneath the tongue and melts in the mouth okay so that's just education based upon the route that we're giving it and then the drug example you see is ondencetron the trade name is zofran so biggest thing i want you to remember important to remember ondensetron is your prototype and um it's used for nausea vomiting but specifically i want you to remember it for preventing nausea and vomiting for patients receiving chemo so this is the best class of drug the serotonin antagonist for patients receiving chemotherapy
