the Rhythmia Life Advancement Center. So welcome you two, So welcome you two, and I'm going to let you both take it from here and dive in. and I'm going to let you both take it from here and dive in.
All right. All right. All right, yeah, Yeah.
Excited to be here. excited to be here. Yeah. Thanks for having us.
You know, it's really interesting that the topic for today is empath strategies and what that means, you know, and I think what it means to be an empath is something that both Ben and I can relate to, you know, and I think that what happens is, you know, a lot of the guests that we have at Rhythmia, you know, there's people from all over the world and all walks of life. And, you know, sometimes what happens here is that people feel. that they're healers themselves and they come from a healing profession or they might be in the counselors or psychologists or therapists of some sort and they've always been the people in their lives that have helped everybody else around them and they've they're really good at it and they've been kind of even in their families they've been the ones that are kind of the rock and and everybody comes to them with their problems and they give good advice and they're well liked and they're usually very successful But they often neglect themselves and they don't take advantage of the same advice that they give to everybody else. They don't really use that for their own life. And so that's a theme we've noticed here at Rhythmia.
And I think it's important to address it, you know, because we feel that a lot of people that want to come here have these traits. And I think it's important to discuss this. Yeah, Yeah, absolutely.
absolutely. You know, You know, there are, there are, each week we have a new group and when we spend time with each of these groups, each week we have a new group and when we spend time with each of these groups, we get like a crash course in humanity. we get like a crash course in humanity. It's like a cross-section of all different kinds of people from all around the world, It's like a cross-section of all different kinds of people from all around the world, different walks of life.
different walks of life. And what we find is no matter what culture you're from, And what we find is no matter what culture you're from, no matter where in the world you're from, no matter where in the world you're from, there is this trend, there is this trend, there's this phenomena, there's this phenomena, this empath phenomena. this empath phenomena. Every person has a limbic system. Every person has a limbic system.
We all have mirror neurons, We all have mirror neurons, so we can all feel energy. so we can all... feel energy. We can all feel some of what's happening. We can all feel some of what's happening.
But some of us are hypersensitive to or hypervigilant to the emotional process of other people. But some of us are hypersensitive to, or hypervigilant to the emotional process of other people. Something that you do in the Something that you do in the Thursday classes is explain one of the Thursday classes is explain one of the reasons that that can come around. reasons that that can come around. That's right.
And I think that would be a really interesting thing. And I think that would be a really interesting thing to start with. Yeah, absolutely.
Now, I think what's interesting to just remind our audience tonight is that, you know, Rhythmia is a week-long program that focuses on helping you achieve what we call a miracle. And what that means is that we've given people here three intentions, and these intentions help someone connect with their true self and heal any sort of historical trauma or painful events or emotions they might have gone through. And so, you know, we're not, I wouldn't consider ourselves an ayahuasca center. You know, that's not what we lead with. While ayahuasca is our primary modality, we have a variety of other modalities we're using in a coordinated, very well thought out way that helps people connect with themselves and heal things and then become empowered to move forward in their life.
So, In this process of working with almost 17,000 people since we opened in 2016, we've noticed a theme that we're talking about right now is that there's some of the guests that have this empathic ability. And sometimes it can block this healing process. And I think what you were probably asking me, right, is like, well, how does that happen? Like, why? Why does that occur?
So you would think if you have someone that is very empathic, and very connected to other people and can feel emotions very well and can read people very well and they're, like you said, they're hypervigilant about their surroundings. Why would that be something that sometimes impedes them from getting their own healing? And I think what happens is we have to go way back to sort of the beginning of when this empathic ability started.
And so, you know, most of us that are empaths are it. People that, as kids, we had to take care of ourselves. You know, we might have been in a chaotic environment. We might have been in a...
We might have had caregivers that were not meeting our needs emotionally at the right moments, you know? Childhood is fragile. fragile and there's, there's developmental milestones.
And sometimes our parents or our caregivers are just not available. They're maybe they're abusive or they're just not around, you know, there's all these different things. Or you might've come from an amazing family who was very loving and you're connected to them, but your environment was chaotic. And what was around you was very unpredictable, maybe in your neighborhood or at your school or whatever.
So, so when you're a child and you, you realize that. It's you against the world, and that you have to really take care of yourself because your caregivers are not available for it. What can a child do, right? There's not a lot of options.
You're five years old, you know, so the one option that's at their disposal as a child is that they can what we call dissociate and unplug from their own emotional process and they can push their emotions off to the side. And then their body, as we say, becomes a vessel to pull in like a magnet or like a sponge and pull in the emotions of those around them. And then they feel those emotions. So if I'm in a situation where there's a stranger and I'm five years old and I'm walking down the street and I dissociate and I pull in this vibe and I feel danger, fear, anger, unpredictability, chaotic stuff like that, then I know, uh-oh, this is a...
this is a sketchy individual. I need to cross the street. I need to stay away from this person.
Or then I get to school and I'm thinking about when I was a kid, I walked to kindergarten, which they don't do now these days, right? But, but so in kindergarten, like you're sitting there and you're like, all right, I'm going to unplug. I'm going to, I'm going to connect with my kindergarten teacher.
Oh, she's loving. She's peaceful. She's patient.
She's calm. This is someone I can trust. I feel who she is and now I can relax. And this becomes a compass to navigate our environment.
And so what happens is a lifetime of doing this, you're picking up on everybody's emotions all the time. Your dads, your moms, your siblings, you're picking up on your neighborhood people, your classmates, everybody. And then you're pulling it in and you're holding it. And I always make a joke. It's a stupid joke.
But in my class, I make a joke and I say, well, why is it? that you guys just pull in and hold a motion. Why don't you redirect it back to who it belongs to, right? Because if you're pulling it in, you know it's not yours.
You're using it to diagnose people. Why don't you just redirect it? And the silly joke that I give is, well, when you were five years old, you weren't in a doctoral program in Freudian Model 3 psychodynamic behavioral observation strategies for therapy, right?
You weren't doing that at that age. You weren't learning about the projective identification, corrective emotional experiences, the objective. You weren't doing that because that's what therapists will use that are psychodynamically oriented to navigate the patient sessions in therapy.
But that's when you're a therapist. But you guys, right, you empaths are doing the first half of this. You're pulling in emotions. You're understanding. You're diagnosing.
And then you're just holding it. And you're not redirecting it because you learned this at age five for survival. You guys are all survival. You guys are fighters and you're survivalists and you're extremely streetwise and you're hypervigilant and you're very, very smart. But you cannot be fooled very easily.
You guys, you guys are all like on it. That's that's kind of the early steps of what creates an empath. Can I ask then, Can I ask then, Dr. Dr. Jeff, Jeff? so then would you say that that's kind of the key trait of an empath, So then would you say that that's kind of the key trait of an empath to be able to dissociate from my own emotional state?
to be able to dissociate from my own emotional state and then pull in and really feel the emotions of others? And then. pull in and really feel the emotions of others. So that's really what we're thinking is an empath.
So that's really what we're thinking is an empath. And then my second question would be just on that is, And then my second question would be. just on that is then what I'm hearing from you is that it's a learned thing to be an empath is a learned behavior.
then what I'm hearing from you is that it's a learned thing. To be an empath is a learned behavior. Well, there are two situations that occur to create an empath. One is what we just explained. The other is just your DNA lined up like that.
You have good luck or maybe bad luck, but you just... Your family culture created it. Your experiences in life created it. That's the more lesser version.
That's less people are empaths because of that. It's more the other one. What was your first question? If the just kind of being clear on what I'm hearing is your definition of an empath, Just kind of being clear on what I'm hearing is your definition of an empath, which is the ability to dissociate myself from my own emotional state and then pull in the emotions and the state of others and to really feel those emotions.
which is the ability to dissociate myself from my own emotional state and then pull in the emotions and the state of. others and to really feel those emotions. Yes, and the reason why that's an interesting sort of personality type is because if you're constantly avoiding yourself, not intentionally, but you're doing it because when you're dissociated, you're hypervigilant. And that's where you've become comfortable and you're familiar there and you can go anywhere and be safe. And that's a space where it's familiar.
So you're there all the time and it's like 24-7. It's hard to sleep well. It's hard to have intimate relationships. It's hard to trust other people.
It's hard to, you know, lower your guard and just be yourself. And it's hard to do therapy. It's impossible to do therapy. Like, that's a joke. Like, don't even bother.
If you're an empath, like, you got to connect with yourself. And that's not what empaths do. They want to connect with everybody else, you know? Right, Right.
and I just want to say, And I just want to say, you mentioned the word ability, you mentioned the word ability. it's the ability to dissociate. It's the ability to dissociate.
For most people, For most people, It doesn't feel like an ability so much as an automatic reaction to something. it doesn't feel like an ability so much as an automatic reaction to something. So even in both cases, So even in both cases, the case of a natural empath, the case of a natural empath, someone who is naturally very sensitive, someone who is naturally very sensitive, very intuitive to other people's feelings, very intuitive to other people's feelings, it's usually automatic.
it's usually automatic. And same with someone who has experienced the need for hypervigilance, And same with someone who has experienced the need for hypervigilance, it's usually an absolute survival tactic that is automatic, it's usually an absolute survival tactic that is automatic, natural. natural.
So much so that we oftentimes find the empaths can't control it. So much so that we oftentimes find the empath can't control it. And so that's why we're talking about the strategies. And so that's why we're talking about the strategies. That's why we use that term empath strategies because the need to develop strategies is crucial.
That's why we use that term empath strategies, because the need to develop strategies is crucial. You want to be able to enjoy intimate relationships. You want to be able to enjoy intimate relationships. You want to be able to sleep well. You want to be able to sleep well.
You want to be able to go to a concert or an event and enjoy it without being completely at the effect of everyone else around you. You want to be able to go to a concert or an event and enjoy it without being completely at the effect of everyone else around you. Yes, absolutely. So it's an ability, So it's an ability, but it's also oftentimes a reflex or an automatic instinctual.
but it's also oftentimes... a reflex or an automatic instinctual. And so when you use the word flooded, And so when you use the word let it. this is that feeling of going into these spaces that you just mentioned and not being able to handle it. This is that feeling of going into these spaces that you just mentioned and not being able to handle it.
So what does that look like? So what does that look like? Yeah, well, you know, if you are constantly absorbing the energy around you from other people and environments, and you've been doing this since you were five years old, and now you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, whatever, you're holding a lot of emotion.
And everybody has a breaking point, depending on their own personality. and their own ability to hold emotion, that they get to the point where they're maxed out. What I've noticed, just kind of without doing official research on it, I've noticed right around the late 30s, early 40s, people start to notice this and it starts to become an issue.
And then by mid-40s, they're maxed out. They can't handle it anymore. And they start to isolate.
They start to resent people. They start to maybe take up drugs and alcohol when they weren't really drinkers or anything before. And they feel confused and they feel alone. And so that's kind of what it leads to, unfortunately, for a lot of the people. And so how does ayahuasca help then in that case?
And so how does ayahuasca help then in that case or how can it help? Or how can it help? Well, Well, ayahuasca is such a potent strong medicine. ayahuasca is such a potent, strong... medicine.
There are a lot of things that can support an empath, There are a lot of things that can that can support an empath but the the way that ayahuasca comes in is sort of like a full cleanse. but the way that ayahuasca comes in is sort of like a full cleanse. One of the things that we often talk about and emphasize with ayahuasca is the purgative component where we're releasing and cleansing things that have built up within us. One of the things that we often talk about and emphasize with ayahuasca is the purgative component, where we're releasing and cleansing things that have built up within us. So sometimes that's vomiting, So sometimes that's vomiting, going to the bathroom, going to the bathroom, crying, crying, sweating.
sweating, Yawning, yawning I believe is notoriously his favorite. I believe, is notoriously his favorite. My favorite, yawning. Yeah, Yeah.
I don't mind crying. I don't mind crying. That kind of feels like cathartic too.
That kind of feels like cathartic too. But, But they all have a lot of benefits. you know, they all have a lot of benefits. But the thing is, But the thing is, all of those things, all of those things are all of those purgative effects, all of those purgative effects, those ways that we purge, those ways that we purge. Especially, especially I think crying is something that we tend to repress.
I think, crying is something that we tend to repress. So throughout our lives, So throughout our lives, we have a lot of opportunities to release. we have a lot of opportunities to release and express and...
and express and let go of that energy, and let go of that energy, but socially we're often trained to hold that in. but socially we're often trained to hold that in. So not only is an empath taking on other people's energy, So not only is an empath taking on other people's energy, they're also not really feeling like it's okay to cry or okay to really feel those feelings.
they're also not really feeling like it's okay to cry or okay to really feel those feelings. Something that many people hear when they're really, Something that many people hear when they're really, really young is, really young is stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about. stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about. Right, Right, and it's sort of this threat where it's...
and it's sort of this threat where it's... I told my kids that. I told my kids that. No, No, don't do it.
don't do it. Yeah, Yeah, I mean, I mean, and the thing is, and the thing is, sometimes whether you're feeling your own emotions or someone else's, sometimes whether you're feeling your own emotions or someone else's, sometimes an actual healthy, sometimes an actual healthy, correct reaction is to cry. correct reaction is to cry. Imagine you're talking to someone that you really, Imagine you're talking to someone that you really, really love, really love, and they're sharing something that has been painful for them, and they're sharing something that has been painful for them.
and they start to cry. and they start to cry. A natural empathic response for any natural human, A natural empathic response for any natural human, even someone who doesn't identify as hypersensitive or as an empath, even someone who doesn't identify as...
hypersensitive or as an empath, a natural empathic response is to let out a few tears as well. a natural empathic response is to let out a few tears as well. Sometimes, Sometimes, not everybody does that, not everybody does that, but sometimes that's a natural response. but sometimes that's a natural response.
For an empath, For an empath, you start to take those feelings on, you start to take those feelings on, take those feelings on, take those feelings on, and if you aren't releasing those tears, and if you aren't releasing those tears, sometimes you can release those tears and it's good. sometimes you can release those tears and it's good. You let it go.
You let it go. You felt that purge. You felt that purge.
You felt that release. You felt that release. But most of us, But most of us, we usually hold in that energy and we try to be strong for someone or even if we're the ones having the feeling, we usually hold in that energy. And we try to be strong for someone or even if we're the ones having the feeling, we don't want to express that feeling.
we don't want to express that feeling. We learn that message that the world around us doesn't want to, We learn that message that the world around us doesn't want to, that basically doesn't care and wants us to suppress it. that basically doesn't care and wants us to suppress it. So not only is basically everybody being told that their feelings and that their emotions need to be suppressed within like a comfortable range, So not only is basically everybody being told that their feelings and that their emotions need to be suppressed within like a comfortable range.
Empaths, empaths, it's sort of compounded significantly more. it's sort of compounded significantly more. Yeah, and I think what's important to remember within that whole process is just what is ayahuasca even doing for anybody?
You know, when it's administered in a sacred setting that's intention-based and people are taking it seriously and there's the safety protocols around the people participating and they drink it. What happens, and for those that don't know, ayahuasca is an indigenous remedy from the Amazon basin of Latin America, mostly Colombia and Brazil, Peru. There's other countries where it grows. There's two plants that it's made up of.
And once people drink this blend of two plants, what happens is a lot of neurochemical reactions occur. And then the shamans who administer this talk a lot about the spiritual side of it, of course, because... Shamans are often connected to nature and to spirituality very deeply, and that's a very important part of this.
But what's happening for anybody who drinks ayahuasca that's intention-based and doing it with the right sort of desires that are for good, is that it helps you look at yourself. It helps you connect with who you are as a person. If you're stuck in life and you feel that you're at a crossroads, or you just feel like you can't break through this sort of resistance you have, And you always date the same type of person and they're never the right person, but it's always just the same thing.
And you're kind of in a rut. Ayahuasca will help in addition to the way that the intentions are set surrounding it to help you break through. So when someone that's empathic, that feels flooded, and they're not even sure why they feel this way, they're just, because a lot of the people that come to Rhythmia, their empaths don't even really know they're empaths.
They just kind of like, it goes, aha, my Thursday class. They go, oh my gosh, I am one. And so what we want to do by the purpose of this webinar is to kind of like point this out ahead of time for people. And then you can kind of start to think about it in your own life, like how this manifests for you.
Like if this is sort of aligning with who you are as a person, how this could be something that can be a beautiful gift to those around you. But it can also be a very much a burden for you. And so there's a way to manage this in a way that's more helpful and it doesn't put you like at the back. burner of priority for healing.
And so ayahuasca goes into the body and it finds these emotions that you're storing and it releases them as Ben was explaining through a purge. But the people that are empaths, they don't know that they are. They're very concerned about being connected to themselves.
They don't want to be. Empaths like being hypervigilant. That's where they're comfortable, like I mentioned.
So So ayahuasca is trying to help you connect with yourself. But if you have resistance there, then that's something to look at. And the way you can get past it is by seeing who you've become in your life, number one. And a lot of people have become who they've been dealing with, that they've been holding their emotions. So for example, if I'm five years old and I became an empath because I had a drunk, violent father, which thank God I did not.
My dad was amazing. But if I did. I'm likely have become a bit of that now. Like as an adult, I'm angry, I might drink too much, and I've kind of become what I'm holding.
And usually by the time somebody, you know, from five years old until they're 50-ish, they've evolved into, they're holding a lot of things. They might be holding their neighborhood's culture. Like I grew up in a part of Los Angeles that was a little rough. And so I was holding like all this like kind of tough guy vibe, like that was holding in me. And so.
That's what the ayahuasca will do. It will start to show you who you are, who you've become, and then the empath has to learn that it's okay to connect, and it's okay to connect and plug into themselves, and they don't have to be hypervigilant at all times. It's okay to be hypervigilant in new environments, meeting new people, working with people as a coach or a therapist or a counselor or a nurse.
It's okay, but you don't want to be in that mode 24-7 because it's exhausting. And so what happens then is after the hypervigilant empath lets down their guard and connects, that's where this emotional release occurs and they get the healing that they're looking for. And that emotional release looks like what didn't happen for them as kids. So if I'm five years old and I need to be an empath because nobody's taking care of me and I'm navigating my life based on my own emotional attunement, well, guess what?
I was probably really scared back then. I was also probably angry at my parents. I was also probably concerned, confused, and worried. And I might have had a lot of guilt and shame as well.
And so all those emotions that created this flip for me to be an empath are still held in my consciousness, in my amygdala, in parts of my brain, the default mode network, all these areas. So that's what the release looks like. You bring out this stuff, okay? I'm pissed off at my dad. I'm mad at my neighborhood.
angry at my this one teacher it all comes out it all comes out and that's the release and that's what we're going for with the empaths so then they can use this as a tool which is the next probably step that we're probably going to talk about it how to use this as a tool right so anyway that's my two cents on why people become that And well, And, well, do you want to jump right in to how do we use it as a tool? do you want to jump right into how do we use it as a tool? Well, I want to ask Ben first. Like, Ben, do you think, do you think, like, in your practice with teaching people meditation, and Ben is really, really good at, you know, because when I think of meditation before I met Ben, I was kind of like, oh, my gosh, that's, like, so difficult. Like, I can't do that.
It's, I don't have the patience. I don't have, you know. Then I read one of his books.
I'm like, oh, I'm actually meditating all the time. I just wasn't thinking of it like that. And now I can do it intentionally, right? So that's a big part of like this empath talk is having the intentionality behind our actions, you know, and things that we're doing. Yeah, Yeah, I think that's really, I think that's really, really important.
really important. And what you said about ayahuasca in the context of the ayahuasca. And what you said about ayahuasca in the context of the ayahuasca. I love that you said rhythm is not an ayahuasca center. I love that you said Rhythmia is not an ayahuasca center.
That's why we don't call it rhythm ayahuasca center. That's why we don't call it Rhythmia Ayahuasca Center. It's Rhythmia Life Advancement Center.
It's rhythm a life advancement center. The ayahuasca is central to an entire system, The ayahuasca is central to entire system an entire program and each part is very intentional and so so meditation takes a lot of different forms and we sometimes call it mindfulness which means totally being totally present mindfulness is total awareness total presence within the the moment that you're living right now and an entire program. And each part is very intentional.
And so meditation takes a lot of different forms. And we sometimes call it mindfulness. Which means totally being totally present.
Mindfulness is total awareness, total presence within the moment that you're living right now. And for an empath, and for an empath that's a really really important thing to do and it's actually a really great strategy to practice in that's a really, really important thing to do. And it's actually a really great strategy to practice in an ayahuasca ceremony, in an ayahuasca ceremony, but in everyday life, but in everyday life.
mindfulness, Mindfulness, awareness of what you're experiencing. awareness of what you're experiencing. And the way we use it as a tool, And the The way we use it as a tool, well, well, it's one part of the entire system. it's one part of the entire system. So when you arrive to Rhythmia, So when you arrive to arrhythmia, when you meet empaths, when you meet empaths, and as an empath myself, and as an empath myself, when I first arrived to Rhythmia, when I first arrived to arrhythmia, I had no intention of doing ayahuasca.
I had no intention of doing ayahuasca. Did you know that? Did you know that? Yeah, no, I know because you're one of the guest speakers.
Yeah, yeah, Yeah, I was going to be a guest speaker and I was just going to come work and do my thing. I was gonna be a guest speaker and I was just gonna come work and do my thing and they were all gonna do that jungle, And they were all going to do that jungle, crazy jungle juice. crazy jungle juice.
And then as soon as I show up, And then as soon as I show up, this is the empath in me, this is the empath in me. As soon as I show up, as soon as I show up, I set foot on the ground and I'm like, I set foot on the ground and I'm like, whoa, whoa, this is a safe place. this is a safe place.
And And I had, I had at the time I had already been exposed to a lot of people working with different various different plant medicines. at the time, I had already been exposed to a lot of people working with different, various different plant medicines and I didn't always feel that way. And I didn't always feel that way.
I didn't always feel like this is safe. I didn't always feel like this is safe. That's a safe person. That's a safe person.
This is a safe situation. This is a safe situation. It's a safe environment.
It's a safe environment. As soon as I got here, As soon as I got here, my guard dropped naturally. my guard dropped naturally. And any empath listening knows that that is a rare event.
And any empath listening knows that that is a rare event. Yes. That doesn't happen.
That doesn't happen. And I went around the whole property. And I went around the whole property. And sometimes empaths have a hard time traveling.
And sometimes empaths have a hard time traveling. So they travel with a lot of anxieties. So they travel with a lot of anxieties. So a lot of times when you see people with anxiety at the airport, So a lot of times when you see people with anxiety at the airport, a lot of times they're empaths who are flooded. a lot of times they're empaths who are flooded.
Flooded is like... Flooded is like... overwhelmed with lots of different energies and so i could feel myself all that flooding as i walked around and interacted with people at rhythmia i could feel that flooding from all the international travel just melt away because it's because the whole team is overwhelmed with lots of different energies and so i could feel myself all that flooding as i walked around and interacted with people at rhythmia i could feel that flooding from all the international travel just melt away because it's because the whole team is informed the whole team is informed how to hold space how to create that positive safe energy to create that safe container so the the ayahuasca is is a informed the whole team is informed how to hold space how to create that positive safe energy to create that safe container so the the ayahuasca is is a is one of the really special tools that all line up so that each person feels connected to all the different parts of their body. is one of the really special tools that all line up so that each person feels connected to all the different parts of their body. We start every single day with yoga for example.
We start every single day with yoga for example. Yoga is one of my favorite practices and we started with a kind of a kind of a chill yoga kind of an easy not super strenuous not super intense definitely not heated yoga a very comfortable relaxing. Yoga is one of my favorite practices and we started with a kind of a kind of a chill yoga kind of an easy not super strenuous not super intense definitely not heated yoga a very comfortable relaxing. It's hot enough in Costa Rica. It's hot enough in Costa Rica.
Yeah it's hot enough. Yeah it's hot enough. There's fans and air conditioning on in the in the room where the yoga is happening. There's fans and air conditioning on in the in the room where the yoga is happening. And the idea with that is you start that day by connecting to your physical body.
And the idea with that is you start that day by connecting to your physical body. The yoga helps us begin that process of connecting the mind and the body and the breath and the intention. The yoga helps us begin that process of connecting the mind and the body and the breath and the intention. So every posture, So every posture, every movement is connected to an intention. every movement is connected to an intention.
It's connected to different energy channels in the body. It's connected to different energy channels in the body. And when the mind is connecting to different parts of the body, And when the mind is connecting to different parts of the body, you're...
anchoring back in yourself. anchoring back in yourself. You're settling back in, You're settling back in, you know?
you know? And so starting every single day like that, And so starting every single day like that, then going into healthy, then going into healthy, clean food is really, clean food is really, really important. really important.
So often we're eating toxic processed foods that heavily affect our anxiety, So often we're eating toxic processed foods that heavily affect our anxiety, our heart rate, our heart rate, our hormone levels, our hormone levels, our ability to process things mentally. our ability to process things mentally. And so you're going from one modality to the next And so you're going from one modality to the next.
all stacked up throughout the day so that you're connected to yourself. all stacked up throughout the day so that you're connected to yourself. You're a clean, You're a clean, pure vessel.
pure vessel. And we top the day off with the ayahuasca ceremonies that are held in a very, And we top the day off with the ayahuasca ceremonies that are held in a very, very safe container. very safe container.
People every single week say, People every single week. Say, oh, oh, your team, your team, your team in the ceremonies, your team in the ceremonies, they're angels. they're angels.
Every single one of them, Every single one of them, they're angels. they're angels. That's a word we hear every single week.
That's a word we hear every single week. And what that really means is that it's not about us. And what that really means is that it's not about us. We hold a space so that it can be about you.
We hold a space so that it can be about you. And for an empath, And for an empath, that can be crazy. that can be crazy. That can be something that's so unusual. That can be something that's so unusual.
Sometimes they'll even, Sometimes they'll even, we joke about it, we joke about it, but they start to try to help the helpers. but they start to try to help the helpers. They start to ask us about our lives and about what we've been going through and our childhood trauma. They start to ask us about our lives and about what we've been going through and our childhood trauma.
We've trained the staff not to take the bait. We've trained the staff not to take the bait. Yeah, Yeah, exactly. exactly. And so that's why they feel like angels.
And so that's why they feel like angels. Because there's that expression we hear a lot, Because we're... There's that expression we hear a lot, being trauma-informed.
being trauma-informed. We're empath-informed. We're empath-informed.
We know when we're dealing with an empath. We know when we're dealing with an empath. That's right. And we can help them reconnect back into themselves. And we can help them reconnect back into themselves.
The medicine naturally has qualities that have you reflect on yourself in some certain ways. The medicine naturally has qualities that... that have you reflect on yourself in some certain ways, but just like any tool, But just like any tool, it needs mastery around it. it needs mastery around it. It needs that real clarity and that mastery around it.
It needs that real clarity and that mastery around it. So people who are shamans from other traditions or have experienced plant medicine in other contexts, So people who are shamans from other traditions or have experienced plant medicine in other contexts, they can't just come here and apply to be one of the shamans. they can't just come here and apply to be one of the shamans.
These are all people who are trained within our own context and have been training and receiving and experiencing this process for years, These are all people who are trained within our own context and have been training and receiving and experiencing this process for years, mostly. mostly. Almost all of them were at least two or three years before ever serving the medicine.
Almost all of them were at least two or three years. Before ever serving the medicine. Correct.
You know? Yeah. And so the way it's used as a tool really is kind of hard to answer kind of quickly.
And so the way it's used as a tool really is kind of hard to answer kind of quickly because the way it's used as a tool is masterfully in the context of the entire program. Because the way it's used as a tool is masterfully in the context of the entire program. Yes, 100%.
And I think, you know, what ends up happening when people that are empaths come to Rhythmia and they see this shift in themselves and that they can see that they're holding all this information. baggage from all these people they've been with, you know, and dealt with their whole life. And it's been their identity, you know, and then when they release this emotional projection, then they're unsure about who they are as people. And so the next part is to, is to deal with the, the personality traits of the empath to not allow a flooded vibe to happen again.
And so what ends up happening is we teach the guests how to navigate this. sort of superpower, I think is what is a great way to say what it is. So those that have this empath strategy to them really have this edge over a lot of other people because they can read you, they can feel what you're going through, and it's a very powerful tool. However, how do you shift into not getting flooded again? So what I've come to understand and learn by working with all these people and my own studies and stuff and my psychology background is Empaths have a green light over their head.
They have this sort of signal to the world that they want you to project onto them. And this green light is based out of four traits that they have. Number one, they're very loving people.
Number two, they're all caregivers in some way. Number three, they are all perceived by the people around them to be emotionally stable. They might not feel that way all the time, but.
they definitely are perceived that way, emotionally stable. And those are good traits. We would never want anybody to change those traits.
Loving, caregiving, emotionally stable, very good. The fourth one, this is the trait that the empath can work on. And what it is, is that the boundaries that they have with themselves are unclear to themselves.
So let me explain, because that's a weird statement. What does it mean to have boundaries with myself? Well, we all know what it is to have boundaries with others. We all have boundaries with others.
Like we learned that in kindergarten, you know, don't, don't fight anybody and, you know, sit here and you sit there and when you talk, I talk, we all know what boundaries are with others. What does it mean to have boundaries with self? This is what it means. How much of my own emotional energy am I willing to invest in you to meet your needs?
I need to know about how much of my own, my own emotional energy I have that I'm willing to invest in you. So If I'm unclear about that, and the empath is always unclear about it, that green lights the people to project their baggage onto them. The empath is inviting it.
But if you don't want to invite it, because you're on your way to work, and I used to live in New York, and I'd be on the subway, I'd be on the 6 train coming out of Grand Central, heading to Soho, and I didn't want to pick up on everybody's vibe, right? So how did I turn off my magnet in my sponge of absorbing projection? How did I do it?
Well, I'm still a loving dude. I'm still a caregiver. I still hope I'm emotionally stable.
The staff will disagree. And number four, this is the one I worked on. I was clear about.
how much of my own emotional energy I was willing to invest in someone else. So the example I can give that explains this, I think, really clearly. Okay, I got five kids, right? And I got, my oldest daughter is 24. And she's, I think she's watching this right now. So, hi Marina.
So she does not need a lot of my emotional energy to meet her needs. Because she's an old, not old, she's a young adult. She's old enough to...
take care of herself. She has been for many years. She's very smart and she's been in grad school for a while and she graduated from college and she has a great job and she's doing all kinds of cool stuff. She doesn't need me to meet her emotional needs.
Now, does it mean I don't care? Of course I care. It doesn't mean I don't love her. No, of course it doesn't mean that.
It means that she doesn't need my energy to meet her needs. Now, I have a newborn who's seven months old, actually just turned eight and her name's Isla. Now, Isla...
needs a lot of my, all I can give her. She needs a ton of my emotional energy to meet her needs because she's an infant. She needs a ton of it.
And I know the difference between my oldest daughter, Marina, and my youngest daughter, Isla, who have the same birthday, by the way. Trippy. Okay, closed circle.
Okay, so anyway, because I can manage that, and I know that when I'm talking to my daughter on the phone, Marina, I'm like, hey. And I'm not trying to meet her needs emotionally because she'd be like, dad, you're being weird again. You're being like psychologist again.
Right. So she reminds me. Okay.
So I know that I don't need to do that. But my little baby, Isla, I give her as much as I can because I know the difference. They're different needs.
So for you guys as empaths, there's people that you're engaging with that need a lot of your emotional energy sometimes. Because maybe they're your closest friend. Or maybe they're a sibling that you're just going through a hard time. And you want to be there for them. But then.
You're in the grocery store and you're going through the produce department and you don't want to be that same vibe for the guy in produce department. But what does that guy in the produce department do every time you get there? Tells you his life story and tells you why he's going through a divorce and tells you all his. You didn't even ask for it. And so that's because your energy.
Your own emotional energy is unclear to yourself. You're meeting everybody's needs. You're like wide open at all times. You're in the grocery line and people turn around, strangers, and tell you their life story. And they say, they always say this, I don't know why I'm telling you this, but it's really therapeutic for me, right?
Okay, that's you, okay, that's you. So the ability to turn on and off and to turn down that emotional availability, that's the boundary. That's the on-off switch. So if I am in my office and I'm getting ready to go home and it's 5.30 in the evening and I'm going to walk to my car, I can walk to my car and get there in two minutes and drive home.
Or I can walk to my car and it'll take me an hour. And the difference is that when I'm in my office, I sit there for a minute by myself and I say, All right, how am I feeling? Where am I at?
I feel good. I'm tired. I'm excited to go home and cook dinner and see my family. I had a rough day today. It was hard with that guest or that guest, but I'm feeling overall okay.
I know where I'm at. Then I walk to my car and I'm connected to myself and nobody comes at me. magnet is not on. Or I'm in my office and I sit there and I'm just like busy and I don't really think to connect and I just start walking to the car.
Well, guess what? It takes me an hour because everybody senses it. And they're coming at me.
Oh, Dr. Jeff, I have a question. Oh, wait, one more thing. Can you help me?
Is there anything I can, I need to talk to you about something. And like, it takes me an hour, legit. So it's about connecting with yourself and being plugged into who you are because your body can hold, Ben's body can hold Ben's emotional state or Ben's body can hold the emotional state of someone else.
And so he makes the choice by being open. and available or being connected and plugged into himself. And that's the on off switch. And I love that it's not the difference between being open and available and closed, And I love that it's not the difference between being open and available and closed.
right? Right. So it doesn't mean that you're closed off. So it doesn't mean that you're closed off. So it's not like we have to close off from the world.
So it's not like we have to close off from the world. What we really need to do is to connect with ourselves. What we really need to do is to connect. with ourselves. And that's such a great distinction.
And that's such a great distinction. I love that, I love that, Dr. Jeff. Dr. Jeff. What people tend to think, Ben and I have heard this a million times, people that have known that they're empaths, they'll say, well, I went to a training and I was told that I need to build a force field around me of like block the projection. And I tell them, I say, well, okay, let's redefine that because that's against your nature as an empath.
That's like telling me to like, I can't go check the surf every morning because I'm a surfer. Like, I'm going to do it. It's who I am, right? And so that's not a good advice. The right advice is, no, you just recognize when you're pulling in someone's vibe and you know it's not yours.
You know the difference between your emotions and someone else's. And you don't have to put up a force field. You just are connected to yourself and you know who you are.
So really the key to this whole thing for empaths is self-realization. Knowing who you are, knowing what your triggers are, knowing what angers you or upsets you, knowing where you are in life with your own emotional process and what you're working on being you. And if you know that, if you have a strong sense of self, you're not going to get confused by this thought of suicidality that just came or this thought of like, I want to go drink alcohol right now, like all these different thoughts that might come to you.
You know it's these other people you're around, you're feeling that's not you. That's beautiful. That's beautiful.
That's beautiful. That's beautiful. And so I'm just looking at where we're at in the conversation. And so I'm just looking at where we're at in the conversation. And I think now we've understand what being flooded is and how it can happen, And I think now we've understand what being flooded is and how it can happen, what an empath is and how it's more likely to happen for empaths, what an empath is and how it's more likely to happen for empaths, how ayahuasca creates the opportunity for release.
how ayahuasca creates the opportunity for release. And Ben, And Ben, you had a great ad about how the Rhythmia program specifically. you had a great ad about how the Rhythmia program specifically. And I can just say that also as a guest, And I can just say that also as a guest, like as a guest first and now being here, like as a guest first and now being here, I feel very blessed to be in the space.
I feel very blessed to be in the space. And I remember as a guest, And I remember as a guest, I broke down. I broke down and and really had a huge cry in the conference room. really had a huge cry in the conference room. And then again, And then again at Roots where we serve the organic food.
at Roots where we serve the organic food. And I just felt like a safe, And I just felt like a safe, such a safe container to do that. such a safe container to do that. And that happens here every day.
And that happens here every day. And again, And again, I'm just here helping operate it. I'm just here helping operate it. I didn't create it, I didn't create it, but it's a, but it's a really blessed place. it's a really blessed place.
So we've kind of gone through the main three parts of what we're looking to communicate. So we've kind of gone through the main three parts of what we're looking to communicate, Unless you guys want to add something else, unless you guys want to add something else. Maybe we can switch over to the questions. maybe we can switch over to the questions. We've got quite a few from the group.
We've got quite a few from the group. How does that sound? How does that sound? That sounds good to me.
Yes, let's do it. Bring on bring on the questions. OK, Okay, so I'm going to so I'm going to ask a few questions that we've had. I'm going to ask a few questions that we've got in here. Okay, So one question we've had here is what's the difference between empathy and sympathy?
so one question we've had here is, what's the difference between empathy and sympathy. OK, I like that one. Good one. Sympathy.
The example I give for this is, okay, I grew up in Los Angeles and there's quite a few homeless people, unfortunately, in Los Angeles right now and there always has been and there's a lot right now. And if I have sympathy and I see a homeless guy, I can see him and go, oh man, that's really tough, that sucks. Here's five bucks and I go about my day and I intellectually understand and know that that's hard and that must be tough.
And that's sympathy. I can relate intellectually to that person. Empathy. I see the same homeless guy and I'm being empathic and I take on his despair. I take on his hopelessness.
I might take on his anger or his sadness and it definitely ruins my day. I might cry even and it throws me off for several hours. So that's the difference between sympathy and empathy.
It's intellectual versus emotional. Awesome. Awesome.
And I have a few people that are in the chat as well, And I have a few people that are in the chat as well. I'll ask them if they really want to learn more and talk to the team. ask that really want to learn more and talk to the team.
a few people looking to learn more about coming to Rhythmia. A few people looking to looking to learn more about coming to Rhythmia. I just wanted to point out, I just wanted to point out, I think we're going to put a link to the to to our team, I think we're going to put a link to our team. You can reach out to our team.
you can reach out to our team, They're all trained in the Rhythmia way. they're all trained in the Rhythmia way. Just had another training session with Dr. Just had another training session with Dr. Jeff last week. Jeff last week. And so you can reach out to our team at Rhythmia at any time.
And so you can reach out to our team at Rhythmia. at any time, Give us a call, give us a call, go to the website. go to the website.
And I think And I think uh chad my team members are going to put a link in the chat for you all so please don't hesitate to reach out to us we're here to consult if you're thinking about comment or if you just want to learn more about this please reach out to us okay i'm gonna i'm gonna get on to the next question um Chad, my team members are going to put a link in the chat for you all. So please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to consult. If you're thinking about coming or if you just want to learn more about this, please reach out to us. Okay.
I'm going to get on to the next question. Okay. okay so i think you kind of answered this one maybe we can go a little bit more but how do i tell when i'm feeling something that is mine So I think you kind of answered this one, but maybe we can go a little bit more, but how do I tell when I'm feeling something that is mine versus someone else's.
versus someone else's and you kind of just touched on this at the end but maybe we can dive a little more in it And you kind of just touched on this at the end, but maybe we can dive a little more in it. Well, Well, a lot of times, a lot of times one of the ways that you can tell whether what you're feeling is yours or someone else's is if it makes sense for your life. one of the ways that you can tell whether what you're feeling is yours or someone else's is if it makes sense for your life. If it sounds simple, If it sounds simple, but if you're feeling good, but if you're feeling good, work's pretty much going well, work's pretty much going well, thinking your relationships are going pretty well, thinking your relationships are going pretty well, you're in pretty much good health, you're in pretty much good health, and you go for a morning jog through LA, and you go for a morning jog through LA. and you're listening to music, You know, and you know, you're listening to music and you come home and you start to kind of feel like crap, and you come home and you start to kind of feel like crap, kind of not feel so good, kind of not feel so good.
maybe feel a little depressed or all of a sudden feel flooded with some other kind of emotion, maybe feel a little depressed or all of a sudden feel, you know, feel flooded with some other kind of emotion. You can pretty much have an idea that, you can pretty much have an idea that, okay, okay, that was probably from some of the different things that I saw along the way. that was probably from some of the different things that I saw along the way. That's a good way. You know, what are some other?
Well, it's something that I had to learn as an intern. I empathically could feel that he had another thing right there. Perfect.
So I was like, let's go. Yes, yes, yes. Good. Very good. We communicate telepathically, Ben and I.
So, I had to learn this as an intern in psychology because we naturally have breaks in between therapy sessions for like 5 or 10 minutes. And what I'm trained to do, what I was trained to do during that 5 to 10 minutes was make a progress note and check in with myself. And the reason to check in with myself was because during the previous therapy session, I was wide open and pulling in projection to diagnose and understand my client. And then after that was over and they went about their day and I'm getting ready for the next one, I had to regroup and figure out how am I feeling. And it didn't have to be that I was feeling good.
I could have felt like, well, I'm stressed out or I'm hungry or I'm tired or I'm, or I'm happy or I'm excited. It doesn't matter, but I'm, I'm connecting with myself and then I can start the next session. And then I had, I would do that all day and I'd have, you know, 15 people in a day, sometimes back in Los Angeles. And I, in every, and I'm checking on myself constantly.
So what happened? after I learned that is that I would do that all the time throughout the day, all the time, 50 times in a day, I'm checking in with myself. How am I feeling?
Where am I at? What's going through my mind? And I'm being present with myself. And at first I had to be really mindful about it and kind of like make myself do it because it wasn't like natural. I was always like on in the past.
But when I learned this, I had to kind of regroup and then, and then understand and regroup and then connect and regroup. Then then now it's become routine. Now I just do it all the time.
And so now I can just walk around and like, Oh, I feel something. I'm like, I know that's not me because I've been checking in with myself all morning. And I know that this sadness I just felt is not me, but what is it? What's a human thing to do?
If I feel sadness, I might think, well, I miss my older kids. They don't live in Costa Rica. I'm sad about something, but no, see, that's not the way that it has to be.
That could be a true statement, but you weren't sad five minutes ago. You were fine. So if you investigate that feeling, you're going to see it around you.
Like, oh, look, there's that person from last night. They're crying about something they figured out or, you know, they're sad about something. And then you can redirect that emotion.
So it's very important to check in with yourself all the time. And then after that, it becomes routine and the empath doesn't have to think about it as much. Yeah, Yeah, it's exercising that particular skill.
it's exercising that particular skill. Just like we were saying at the beginning that the empath is an instinctual automatic response, Just like we were saying at the beginning that the empath is an instinctual automatic response, there has to be that entrainment toward mindfulness. there has to be that entrainment toward mindfulness.
So that was, So that was, by the way, by the way, what he's talking about by meditating all day, what he's talking about by meditating all day, that. that. Yes, yes.
And for those that are, you know, it's interesting too, like we get our fair share of musicians and actors and performers that come to Rhythmia and... They are all empaths, at least the ones that are good are, all of them. Because if you're a performer, what are you doing with your audience, right? You're feeling your audience and you're providing them something that elevates their mood.
And so in order for a performer, an actor, a musician, anybody on a stage, they're pulling in the vibe of the audience and they're understanding what the audience needs and they're giving it to them. through music or through acting or singing or whatever it might be. And that's why after a performance, usually the people are exhausted and they're drained.
Or even a person who gives lectures. Same thing, when you're lecturing to a group of people, they're empaths too. And they're pulling in the audience and they can sense like, oh, that guy is not on board with what I'm saying. And oh, look, they're totally down with this. Cool.
And like, oh, I can see that person in the back's a little nervous about something. I might ask them a question. And then that's why at the end of that.
lecture, you're always drained, you know? So that's something to be aware of. Like if that's you, you're definitely doing this and it leads to great success, but you have to be aware that that's what you're doing and you have to be able to rejuvenate yourself after an experience like that. Like when I give my class on Thursday, I'm doing that the whole time. I know when it's over, I will be exhausted for 15 minutes.
I've, I know this. So I go to my office and I just go, Whoa. And I just relax.
And I just sit there and I. drink some water and I just try to like chill. And then, then after that, I'm good because I, I know that I was doing that the whole time on purpose.
And what are some other ways to do that? And what are some other ways to do that? We have a few people asking questions about ways to recharge or release.
We have a few people asking questions about ways to recharge or release. Uh, We know. we know, Yeah. yeah. What are what are some other ways that we can suggest for people to do that, What are, what are some other ways that we, we can suggest for people to do that?
to connect to themselves and really process all that stuff that's coming up during the day? to connect to themselves and really process all that stuff that's coming at them during the day well there are a lot of different tools and exercises but every single tool and exercise to do that is really designed to get you back to yourself to do that check-in so jeff is just sharing about how he Well, there are a lot of different tools and exercises, but every single tool and exercise to do that is really designed to get you back to yourself to do that check in. So Jeff is just sharing about how he does those check-ins and was trained to do them and got better and better at them.
does those check-ins and was trained to do them and got better and better at them and now they're second nature for him it's really uh you know you can you can practice And now they're second nature for him. It's really, you know, you can practice becoming aware of your sensory experience in subtle different ways. Becoming aware of your sensory experience in subtle different ways through seated meditation, Through seated meditation, a body scan meditation where you lay down and bring your awareness to different parts of your body, a body scan meditation where you lay down and bring your awareness to different parts of your body, one part of the body at a time. one part of the body at a time.
And that helps you direct your attention, And that helps you direct your attention, helps you become aware. helps you become aware, Okay? okay, Oh, oh, I didn't realize there was actually tension in that part of my body. I didn't realize there was actually tension in that part of my body.
Oh, Oh, I didn't realize I was clenching my fists. I didn't realize I was clenching my fists. I didn't realize I didn't realize I was clenching my teeth or grinding my teeth. I was clenching my teeth or grinding my teeth. You know, so a body scan meditation, So a body scan meditation.
mindful walking. mindful walking. So a lot of times when we're walking or jogging, So a lot of times when we're walking or jogging, we want to be listening to our favorite music, we want to be listening to our favorite music, something like that. something like that.
Something that's really great to do is not be listening to any music. Something that's really great to do is not be listening to any music. Go for a walk. Go for a walk.
Take a few deep breaths if you can be in nature. Take a few deep breaths if you can be in nature. If you're in like a city environment where it's really chaotic and it's more relaxing to have some music in, If you're in like a city environment where it's really chaotic and it's more relaxing to have some music in, pop some nature sounds in, pop some nature sounds in, something that's going to be relaxing, something that's going to be relaxing. So you can actually tune your awareness into yourself. so you can actually tune your awareness into yourself.
More than anything, More than anything, bringing the awareness to yourself, bringing the awareness to yourself, having that knowledge of what you're actually experiencing is really the first step, having that knowledge of what you're actually experiencing is really the first step, I would say, I would say, in being able to release the experience of being flooded. in being able to release the experience of being flooded. You said another really important thing. You said another really important thing.
Knowing yourself, Knowing yourself, knowing your life, knowing your life, knowing that, knowing that, okay, okay, so this thing that I have to do, so this thing that I have to do, I'm gonna be exhausted after. I'm going to be exhausted after. So I need to budget So I need to budget.
10-15 minutes. 10, 15 minutes. Every time we have private sessions, Every time we have private sessions, we have five, we have 5-10 minutes between every single one. 10 minutes between every single one. And that's not five, And that's not 5-10 minutes of scrolling on Instagram.
10 minutes of scrolling on Instagram, It's 5-10 minutes of breathing deeply, it's five, 10 minutes of breathing deeply, drinking some water, drinking some water, walking around, walking around, taking it easy, taking it easy, letting ourselves decompress. letting ourselves decompress. So slowing yourself down, So slowing yourself down, slowing your life down, slowing your life down, becoming a little bit more mindful, becoming a little bit more mindful.
and it doesn't always have to be that way long term. And it doesn't always have to be that way long term. Long term, Long term you get better and better at it and it doesn't have to become an entire ritualistic practice.
you get better and better at it, and it doesn't have to become an entire ritualistic practice. But there are... But there are, Yoga is really, yoga is really really good. really good. Any kind of resistance training, Any kind of resistance training, fitness, fitness exercises, exercises, those are excellent ways to release energy and bring your attention back in your body.
those are... excellent ways to release energy and bring your attention back in your body. If you're doing a bench press and you're pressing some heavy weight, If you're doing a bench press and you're pressing some heavy weight, you are not thinking about something else. you are not thinking about something else. Your mind and body are focused on pressing that weight up.
Your mind and body are... focused on pressing that weight up. And if you've ever worked with a trainer or, And if you've ever worked with a trainer or had any extensive athletic training, or, or had any extensive athletic training, you're not going to train as well if you're not focusing, you're not going to train as well if you're not focusing. Right, right? you know, You know, so, so having a physical fitness practice is also a great way to...
so having a, a physical fitness practice is also a great way to, That's, that's, you read my mind again on that one. you read my mind again on that one because that's a huge, Telepathic. Yeah, yeah, that's a huge one.
that's a huge one. Like, Like I learned this, I learned this... um, almost on accident about the fitness one because I, I grew up. paddling Hawaiian outrigger canoes.
And my family has intermarried with a Hawaiian family that's very famous in Oahu. And they have a club in LA. And so I grew up paddling these canoes. And what we would do every year is we'd go to Molokai and paddle to Oahu, which is like a 50-mile race.
And it's this crazy thing. It takes like eight hours. And it's grueling.
And during that race, I've done it almost 20 times in my life. And during that race... At the end, it was this therapeutic release, and I felt like I reset my year every time I would do that race in October of every year. I felt like it was a reset for me.
And then when I got into school and for psychology, I saw that there was what Ben was talking about, the physical component to mindfulness practice is super important. And so what I would tell my family who would laugh at me because this training for this race took everything from you. It was a lot of months of training. I would tell them, if I don't do it, I'm going to go nuts.
I have to do this because that's my practice. That's my therapeutic release. So I've learned since then that if I do this daily and I run 10K every day, that's my release. That's my practice. That's where I get this out.
I don't have to go paddle from Molokai to Oahu every year, even though I'd love to still, but I don't do that anymore as much because I now can do it daily and I've learned. So a physical practice is super, super important. to connect with self. And there's two ways to do it, like Ben said, mindfully or just haphazardly.
And if I'm just jogging and I'm not thinking about anything, you're wasting an opportunity to connect with self and think about who am I, what am I here for, what am I holding on to, what do I need to release. And your one hour workout, the first 10 minutes will be that, and then you'll be back to normal. So it's not like your whole workout has to be that.
So use that as a tool in the fitness side. I thank you so much, I thank you so much, both of you. both of you. I have, I have, I think we have time for a few more questions.
I think we have time for a few more questions. I think there's two here that we can maybe put together. I think there's two here that we can maybe put together.
Okay. Okay. So first one is someone asked that we mentioned three intentions when it comes to arrhythmia and they didn't quite get what those were. So first one is someone's someone asked that we mentioned three intentions when it comes to Rhythmia and they didn't quite get what those were. Okay.
Okay. And then we have another person here that understands the strategies of self-care, And then we have another person here that understands the strategies of self care, setting boundaries, setting boundaries, meditating. meditating.
But there's an aspect of guilt for this person that seems to be part of it. But there's an aspect of guilt for this person that seems to be part of it. and that even if we're looking at things happening across the world. And even if we're looking at things happening across the world.
And so And so I just wonder if there's something there for either or both of you to speak to. I just wonder if there's something there for either or both of you to speak to. Do you want to speak to the three intentions and I'll talk about the guilt thing and then we can add to each other's?
Yeah. Okay. Okay, cool. So the three intentions, So the three intentions, a lot of times what the shaman will say is, a lot of times what the shaman will say is. even though we present them as our intentions, Even though we present them as our intentions, a lot of times a shaman will say this is the intention that the medicine has for you.
a lot of times the shaman will say this is the intention that the medicine has for you. So it's in some ways an intention, So it's in some ways an intention, but in other ways something that's almost like the natural process of the particular kind of healing that's provided in this program. but in other ways something that's almost like the natural process of the particular kind of healing that's provided in this program. And that first one is show me who I have become. And that first one is, show me who I have become.
This is really crucial. This is really crucial. It's not show me who I am because who you are is...
It's not show me who I am, because who you are is perfect, Perfect, pure, pure, loving, loving, totally innocent. totally innocent. Ding! Ding! Look at you, Look at you.
Look how beautiful you are. look how beautiful you are. That's who you really are, That's who you really are, you know.
you know. it says show me who I have become, It says show me who I have become, which means show me all of the distortions where I'm operating in ways that are inauthentic toward my true nature. which means show me all of the distortions where I'm operating in ways that are inauthentic toward my true nature.
So a lot of times that's the first thing that happens with plant medicine. So a lot of times that's the first thing that happens with plant medicine. Not always the first thing, Not always the first thing, but a lot of times it really is. but a lot of times it really is.
And what it does, And what it does, it will amplify those different areas in our lives where we are not ourselves. it will amplify. those different areas in our lives where we are not ourselves.
I'm controlling or I'm controlling or I've become, I've become, you know, you know, even if you, even if you... you know, even if you are an empath, Even if you are an empath, you know, you sort of become your drunk, you sort of become your drunk violent dad or your bipolar mom or whatever it is, violent dad or your bipolar mom or whatever it is. you know, Show me who I have become. show me who I have become.
So that's that first intention. So that's that first intention. The second intention is merge me back with my soul at all costs. The second intention is merge me back with my soul at all costs. Now, Now, this is based on the universally recognized notion that this is based on the universally recognized notion that at some point in our lives, At some point in our lives, usually very, usually very, very young, very young, between ages 3 and 5, between ages three and five, 3 to 7 maybe, three to seven maybe, we have a split from our authentic nature, we have a split from our authentic nature.
Where instead of operating out of pure innocence and pure openness into our lives, where instead of operating out of pure innocence and pure openness into our lives, we start to learn control patterns or strategies unconsciously, we start to learn control patterns or strategies unconsciously, automatically conditioned by the world. automatically conditioned by the world. So merge me back with my soul at all costs means bring me back to you. So merge me back with my soul at all costs means bring me back to my authentic self.
My authentic self. Bring me back to my original nature before I was abused. Bring me back to my original nature before I was abused and started to have to lie in order to... and started to have to lie in order to protect myself to be abused. protect myself to be abused.
Before I started to feel like I have to completely control everything in my life in order to feel safe. Before I started to feel like I have to completely control everything in my life in order to feel safe. Before I started to become narcissistic in order to feel like I'm even barely good enough to function in the world. Before I started to become narcissistic in order to feel like I'm even barely good enough to function in the world, you know. So the second intention, So the second intention, merge me back with my soul at all costs.
merge me back with my soul at all costs. And then the third intention is heal my heart. And then the third intention is heal my heart.
And a lot of times this takes a lot of different forms, And a lot of times, this takes a lot of different forms, but essentially you find that something inside clicks. but essentially, You find that something inside clicks and you feel almost like your broken heart is whole again. And you feel almost like your broken heart is whole again.
And oftentimes there's forgiveness associated with it, And oftentimes there's forgiveness associated with it, forgiveness of yourself, forgiveness of yourself, forgiveness of other people, forgiveness of other people, forgiveness of not meeting your own expectations, forgiveness of not meeting your own expectations, forgiveness of past mistakes that you've made. forgiveness of past mistakes that you've made. And even sometimes just a total, And even sometimes just a total... you know, Some people actually have visions of their heart actually being healed. some people actually have visions of their heart actually being healed.
So those are the three intentions. So those are the three intentions. Show me who I have become. Show me who I have become.
merge me back with my soul at all costs and heal my heart. Merge me back with my soul at all costs. and heal my heart.
And of course a lot of people come to And of course a lot of people come to Rhythmia with a lot of different intentions a lot of different things that they're working on and all of those work out within these three intentions. Rhythmia with a lot of different intentions, a lot of different things that they're working on, and all of those work out within these three intentions. If you're following these three core intentions, If you're following these three core intentions, that's why at the beginning we were talking about it's not just ayahuasca, that's why at the beginning we were talking about it's not just ayahuasca, it's ayahuasca served within a context.
it's ayahuasca served within a context and this is that mindful context. And this is that mindful context that's taking you through the journey throughout the week, that's taking you through the journey throughout the week is those three intentions. is those three intentions. Show me who I have become, Show me who I have become, merge me back with my soul at all costs, merge me back with my soul at all costs, and heal my heart. and heal my heart.
That was awesome. Dude, that was awesome. That's the best explanation I've ever heard of the three intentions. Good job. I'm glad we're recording this.
It's my job. I'm going to watch that again. That was awesome, man. That's exactly what's going on here.
Exactly. So, very good, man. Wow.
That got me emotional. Okay, it's good. So, now the guilt. component is the second part of the question, right?
That people might feel that are empaths that have to set up boundaries and be connected to themselves and not meet everybody's needs. And maybe, you know, redirect emotional pain to those it belongs to and all that. And that might make them feel bad. They might feel a little guilty about it or feel that that's their job somehow, right? So, okay, so that's fair enough to feel that way.
But this is the thing you have to remember. What kind of person believes that you should hold their pain? Right? Like, what kind of person? Like, it's not somebody that is grounded in themselves.
It's not somebody that has your best intentions. It's not somebody that is going to improve their lives by doing that. This is somebody that usually... has what we call a personality disorder. There are people that are struggling in their life with all kinds of different emotion containment issues and all kinds of pain.
Now, those people deserve to be healed and healthy and happy. you've realized that you have a knack for making those people feel better. However, if you hold somebody's pain, they don't improve themselves.
They have a temporary reprieve of 10 minutes because you're holding their pain. They haven't learned anything about their pain. They haven't processed their own pain. They haven't done anything.
They've just given it off to you and you've held it for them in a very loving way. You've done this. However, You have to really think about it.
What kind of person is giving you their pain? Well, they're abusive, period. They're abusive people.
Now, there's exceptions, obviously. In therapy, if you're a therapist, you want them to project. onto you if you're a psychodynamic-oriented therapist.
And you want this, but you know it's happening, and you're pulling for it because you have tools that you're using with that client to redirect them and to correct their emotional experience and heal some things, and you go back and forth, and it's this reciprocal interchange that's going on in therapy. But empaths in the world outside of therapy... are not doing this. They're just holding pain and giving people a little break. They're holding pain and giving people a little break.
And if somebody has developed this pattern with you and all the empaths watching this are thinking, oh my gosh, all my friends do this or maybe not all, but most of them. And my family does this. And how do I not upset them?
Because I'm connected to them. Like my sister does this. Oh my gosh. Like for example, right?
And my best friend does this. There's a way to do it that's gentle, that makes them sit with their own emotions. You still can be yourself, but you connect with yourself when you're engaging with them and you're present-minded with you. That's the first step. And then what happens is they'll say this to you.
Are you okay? You're not yourself right now. There's something going on that you seem different. That means in code, that means you're not present for me right now.
I can tell you're connected to yourself. You have really clear boundaries with you. You're not open like you usually are pulling from my emotions. What's wrong? How come?
I need you to be in that space. So get out of your way and be available for me. That's what that means. Now, you have a choice there.
You can do it knowingly that you're doing it. And that's up to you. That's your purpose.
personal choice. Or if you're sick of it and you're not, it's a, it's become just this monotonous, almost abusive, emotional thing. Then you can just sit with yourself and say, I'm actually doing really good. Thank you very much.
I'm fine. And what will happen at that point is that person has a choice to make. They either abandon the relationship or they get better themselves and they use their own tools that they've developed in therapy or with their life, or they're forced to sit. sit with themselves. And if they leave, they're looking for another target.
So you're, you're a long line of targets that they've burned bridges with. So that's something you can. Understand to hopefully remedy the guilt because it's not your job to hold anybody else's emotional pain.
It's not your job and it doesn't help them anyway. What's better to do is instead of catch everybody fish for them to eat, you teach them how to fish. That's better, right? Because then they can fish for themselves.
You can teach them, but so you're still involved. You're still loving, but you're not doing it for them. Don't do the work for them.
That's what arrhythmia. We do not do the work for the people. The guests do the work for themselves.
And that's why this program works. And that's why it sticks. And that's why there's no sacred cows here. There's no rock star staff.
Everybody's on the same vibe. And the rock star are the guests because they do this work for themselves and they heal themselves. Nailed it. All right.
All right. Yeah. Yeah.
So I want to balance respecting everyone's time, So I want to balance respecting everyone's time, but also people are still hanging in and I'm loving this. but also people are still hanging in and I'm loving this. I want to ask for sure one more question. I want to ask for sure one more question.
This may, This may, this might be the last one. this might be the last one. Okay. Okay. Cause a few people have asked this.
Cause a few people have asked this. So holding all of this, So holding all of this, okay. okay. Can it manifest physically? Can it manifest physically?
And if so, And if so, what would it mean? what What have we seen in any physical healings that can occur at Rhythmia while going through this process? What have we seen in physical, any physical healings that can occur at Rhythmia while going through this process?
I would like Ben to answer that if you can, but before Ben does, I just want to say this. As staff of Rhythmia, we cannot, and as a facility, we cannot make medical claims that this program will heal XYZ things. But what we can talk about is what guests have reported to us that's happened for them.
And we have a million stories of this. And the answer is yes, it does heal physical things according to our guests reporting their own experiences. Right.
Right. Well, Well, especially in the context of this conversation for empaths, especially in the context of this conversation for empaths, there are many cases of psychosomatic empathic illnesses where you're around somebody who has a chronic illness and you start to adopt some of their symptoms. there are many cases of psychosomatic empathic illnesses where you're around somebody who has a chronic illness and you start to adopt some of their symptoms.
And so that's one of the first things. And so that's one of the first things. So in the context of this conversation, So in the context of this conversation, absolutely, absolutely, the program here, the program here, working with the plant medicine and the other aspects of the system, working with the plant medicine and the other aspects of the...
of this system will definitely help you clear out the things that are not yours. will definitely help you clear out the things that are not yours. And the other main area that I can see is that so many, And the other main area that I can see is that so many, every single physical ailment, every single physical ailment, every single physical illness is either caused or exacerbated by stress. every single physical illness, is either caused or exacerbated by stress. And and we hold so much stress in our fascia, And we hold so much stress in our fascia, in our body, in our body, in our minds, in our minds, in our physical brains, in our physical brains, and throughout all of our entire system, and throughout all of our, throughout our entire system, all the layers of our physical system, all the layers of our of our physical system our experience and when we start to go into this process we start to gradually sort of like open up and break up all of that rigidity you know and start to allow the you know we in the you our experience.
And when we start to go into this process, we start to gradually sort of like open up and break up all of that rigidity, you know, and start to allow the, you know, we in the, you know, know chinese energy work systems of like acupuncture the meridians of energy they're like rivers of energy that move through the body your body wants to be whole your body wants to be really healthy your body wants to operate at like an optimal state Chinese energy work systems of like acupuncture, the meridians of energy. They're like rivers of energy that move through the body. Your body wants to be whole. Your body wants to be really healthy. Your body wants to operate at like an optimal state.
It would love that if we provided the right conditions for it. It would love that if we provided the right conditions for it. It's sort of like a plant. It's sort of like a plant. You know, If there's a problem with your plant, if there's a problem with your plant, we don't say, we don't say, oh man, oh man, this plant, this plant.
there's something inherently wrong with this plant. There's like something inherently wrong with this plant. This plant sucks.
This plant sucks. We change the situation around that plant. We change the situation around that plant. We make sure that the plant's getting the light that it needs, We make sure the plant's getting the light that it needs, that it's getting the nutrients that it needs, that it's getting the nutrients that it needs, that it's getting even the temperature, that it's getting even the temperature, all the different contexts around that plant.
all the different contexts around that plant. And what the medicine will do is help us realize the psychological and energetic context that we're living in. And what the medicine will do is help us realize the psychological...
and energetic context that we're living in that has caused all these different problems. that has caused all these different problems. And it'll purge it from the system.
And it'll purge it from the system, It'll clear it out. it'll clear it out, and it'll help you have the realizations to know the next steps you gotta take in order to prevent going back to the things that made you sick in the first place. And it'll help you have the realizations to know the next steps you've got to take in order to prevent going back to the things that made you sick in the first place.
Yeah, one of my best friends called me a year ago and said he just got diagnosed with lupus. And the first thing in my mind, and this dude is super athletic, fit, amazing athlete, runs marathons, Boston Marathon. He's a super fit dude, played football, amazing. And I immediately thought, it's because you're stressed, right?
And he said, yeah, my stress levels have been way too high. My cortisol levels, everything. Like the doctor said, it's stress-related.
Now, there's exceptions for autoimmune disorders, of course. But if you're holding anxiety in your body, it's going to manifest physically. If you're holding other people's emotions, it's going to manifest physically.
Sometimes it manifests in weight issues. Sometimes it manifests in depression, all kinds of like insomnia. All kinds of things, physical symptoms, you know, like all kinds of arthritis and just all the autoimmune things are related to this.
And so just in your own life, And so just in your own life next time you feel stressed or anxious do a do a quick check-in check-in with your body next time you feel stressed or anxious, do a quick check-in, check in with your body. What are you doing? What are you doing?
A lot of times when we're stressed where we're clenching the jaw A lot of times when we're stressed, we're clenching the jaw, Where where we have we have tightness in different parts of the body and that restricts that energy flow we have tightness in different parts of the body, and that restricts that energy flow from what the body wants to be doing. from what the body wants to be doing. The body wants to be, The body wants to be... the body loves to resistance.
The body loves resistance. The body loves workout, The body loves workout, working out, working out, loves athletic activity. loves athletic activity.
And that's why after we work out, And that's why after we work out, we feel great. we feel great. You know, You know, your body loves doing all that, your body loves doing all that, but the body doesn't like to be in chronic tension.
but the body doesn't like to. be in chronic tension. If you're afraid of something or something startles you or scares you or you don't like it, If you're afraid of something or something startles you or scares you, or you don't like it, you withdraw.
you withdraw. We recoil from something we don't like. We recoil from something we don't like. And so if we have like a sort of like anxiety, And so if we have like a sort of like anxiety, it's sort of like having a low-grade fever.
it's sort of like having a low grade. Fever of tension in the body and that anxiety causes the nervous system just sort of like start to curl up and clench up a little bit. of tension in the body.
And that anxiety causes the nervous system just sort of like start to curl up and clench up a little bit. And so when what we find is people who come to arrhythmia, And so when what we find is people who come to arrhythmia, especially at the beginning of the week, especially at the beginning of the week, we'll see that if there's frustration or anxiety or stress, we'll see that if there's frustration or anxiety or stress, that kind of thing, that kind of thing, it starts to open up in their body. it starts to open up in their body. There was one gentleman a few years ago, There was one gentleman a few years ago, I was the guest speaker before I was working here full time, I was the guest speaker before I was working here full time, and he was in his and he was in his 80s.
80s. He sat next to me at breakfast. He sat next to me at breakfast and he was and he and he was he had a little bit of a hunchback and he had a little bit of a hunchback. I don't know the politically correct word for that, I don't know the politically correct word for that But but he was sort of like hunched over like this but he was sort of hunched over like this, and he was a really nice guy, And he was a really nice guy and he was talking to me like this and and I met him and I definitely had a lovely Conversation with him and it was super sweet.
and he was talking to me like this, and I met him, and I definitely had a lovely conversation with him, and it was super sweet. He went into one ayahuasca ceremony. We went into one ayahuasca ceremony, and this is a real true story.
This is a real true story The next morning, The next morning I sat in the same place for breakfast, I sat in the same place for breakfast and he sat next to me again and he sat next to me again, And I introduced myself to him as if I had never met him because after one ceremony and I introduced myself to him as if I had never met him. Because after one ceremony he opened up and he went from this to this He opened up and he went from this to this Sitting up like this and he was like are you joking? Sitting up like this and he was like are you joking? I was I was with you next yesterday and I was like I was I was with you next yesterday and I was like, Dude, dude, dude, dude What happened last night and he was he was like I I haven't been able to roll my shoulders like this And I don't know how long so and that's not the only case of arthritis specifically having like a visible what happened last night?
And he was like, I haven't been able to roll my shoulders like this in I don't know how long. And that's not the only case of arthritis specifically having like a visible and almost immediate adjustment. And almost immediate adjustment. Absolutely, yeah.
Ayahuasca is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and antifungal. So it's clearing out the body, it's detoxing the body. There's a lot of medical components to this that we're finding.
And there's some new research that's been out lately, not from Rhythmia, but from other places like scientific research, peer-reviewed journal articles. They're showing that it's really helping with certain health conditions, certain cancers in some people. A lot of autoimmune issues and especially the mental health issues, depression, anxiety, trauma, some addiction history, like all that kind of stuff.
It's really, really good for all those things. So So I think I think it's about time to wrap up. I think it's about time to wrap up.
Thank you so much, Thank you so much, both of you, both of you, for your time. for your time. I wanted to ask, I wanted to ask, is there anything else you wanted to offer our guests tonight before we sign off?
is there anything else you wanted to offer our guests tonight before we sign off? Well. Everybody right now in the world is thinking, how can the world come back from where it's at?
Like, there's so much going on. There's so much war and turmoil and pain and suffering. And the internet allows everybody to see it all. And it's just like, it's just so much, right?
And everybody thinks, well, what can I do? What can I do, just one person, to change any of this? Like, we're on a collision course for disaster. That's what people think, right?
What we believe at Rhythmia is that the first thing you gotta do is you have to heal yourself. And when you connect with... yourself and you have empathy and love for yourself and you truly connect, that allows you to be empathic with other people in a true way and feel what they're going through.
And if you can feel what someone's going through, you don't want that person to go through pain and suffering. So you will do everything that you can within your realm of responsibility to help heal the people around you by your own energy. And that's how the world changes one person at a time.
Over and over through this and 17,000 people through it through arrhythmia up until now is Making a huge change in the world through ripple effects that are happening And so this is a big important part of changing the world is what we're trying to do here arrhythmia And you know, And you know just to piggyback that when we are just to piggyback that, when we are connected to ourselves, Connected to ourselves. we're connected to the nature, We're connected to the nature connected back to a natural rhythm connected back to a natural rhythm. And so many of these huge challenges that happen in the world are based on limitations, And so many of these huge challenges that happen in the world are based on limitations, frustrations, frustrations, things that are total distortions, things that are total distortions, disconnections from nature. disconnections from nature. When we are connected to ourselves, When we are connected to ourselves, all you empaths out there, all you empaths out there, when you do this work to come back to yourself, when you do this work to come back to yourself, you know what to do.
you know what to do. When you are yourself and you're happy to be yourself and you're back in your body and you're aware of what you need, When you are yourself, and you're happy to be yourself, and you're back in your body, and you're aware of what you need, it becomes a lot clearer what other people need. it becomes a lot clearer what other people need. And so many empaths, And so many empaths, like we've said throughout this whole thing, like we've said throughout this whole thing, they're people helpers, they're people helpers, they're healers, they're healers, they're of service to other people. they're of service to other people.
What happens when you are trying to be of service to other people but you're not really connected to yourself is a lot of projection. What happens when you are trying to be of service to other people, but you're not really connected to yourself is a lot of projection. And so we find that even though there's good intentions, And so we find that even though there's good intentions, there's ineffective impact to the things that we're doing in the world. there's ineffective impact to the things that we're doing in the world. So there's a lot of us who have great intentions, So there's a lot of us who have great intentions, big wide open hearts.
big, wide open hearts, We see these things that are happening in the world. We see these things that are happening in the world. We wanna do something good to help.
We want to do something good to help and then we do something that has meaningless impact or even negative detrimental impact. And then we do something that has meaningless impact or even negative detrimental impact. And so always coming back to ourselves, And so always coming back to ourselves, knowing what's really real for us helps us get real about the ways we can make legitimate change.
knowing what's really real for us helps us get real about the ways we can make legitimate change. And so we have quite a few people asking about how they can come down. And so we have quite a few people asking about how they can come down.
