What are Cranial Nerves?

  • Definition: Nerves originating from the brain or brainstem.
  • Total Nerves: 12 pairs, present on both sides of the body.
  • Numbering: Roman numerals based on emergence from brainstem (front to back).

Function of Cranial Nerves

  • Communication: Relay information between head/neck and brain.
  • Neuron Types:
    • Afferent Neurons: Sensory, carry signals to the brain.
    • Efferent Neurons: Motor, carry signals from the brain.

Details of Each Cranial Nerve

  1. Cranial Nerve I - Olfactory

    • Color: Green
    • Origin: Cerebrum
    • Function: Sensory, responsible for smell.
  2. Cranial Nerve II - Optic

    • Color: Blue
    • Origin: Cerebrum
    • Function: Sensory, responsible for vision.
  3. Cranial Nerve III - Oculomotor

    • Color: Light Orange
    • Origin: Midbrain
    • Function: Motor, eye movement, autonomic functions (e.g., eyelid elevation, pupillary constriction).
  4. Cranial Nerve IV - Trochlear

    • Origin: Midbrain
    • Function: Motor, eye movement.
  5. Cranial Nerve V - Trigeminal

    • Origin: Pons
    • Function: Both sensory (facial sensation, anterior 2/3 tongue sensation) and motor (mastication).
  6. Cranial Nerve VI - Abducens

    • Color: Dark Orange
    • Origin: Ponta medullary region
    • Function: Motor, eye movement (abduction).
  7. Cranial Nerve VII - Facial

    • Origin: Ponta medullary region
    • Function: Both sensory (taste, anterior 2/3 tongue) and motor (facial expression, saliva and tear secretion).
  8. Cranial Nerve VIII - Vestibulocochlear

    • Origin: Ponta medullary region
    • Function: Sensory, balance and hearing.
  9. Cranial Nerve IX - Glossopharyngeal

    • Origin: Medulla oblongata
    • Function: Both sensory (taste, posterior 1/3 tongue, pharyngeal sensation) and motor (swallowing, salivation).
  10. Cranial Nerve X - Vagus

    • Origin: Medulla oblongata
    • Function: Both sensory (visceral sensation) and motor (swallowing, speech, parasympathetic effects).
  11. Cranial Nerve XI - Accessory

    • Origin: Medulla oblongata and cervical spinal cord
    • Function: Motor, shoulder shrugging, head turning.
  12. Cranial Nerve XII - Hypoglossal

    • Origin: Medulla oblongata
    • Function: Motor, tongue movement.
