Surgical Hand Washing and PPE Protocol

Hand Washing Procedure

  • Perform surgical hand washing from hand to elbow for 20 seconds.
    • Purpose: Eliminate bacteria and microorganisms that cause diseases.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  1. Air Net: Wear to prevent hair contamination.
  2. Face Mask: Protects from respiratory droplets (COVID-19).
  3. Face Shield: Additional protection from contaminants.
  4. Gloves: Protect both the client and the healthcare provider.

Preparation of Materials

  • Gather all materials needed to save time and energy.
  • Use a plastic bag to prevent contamination of cleaners.
    • Place cleaners inside the bag.
  • Put dirty linens in the hamper to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Sanitize the mattress before handling clean linens.
  • Sanitize hands before touching clean linens.

Handling Linens

  • Bottom Sheet: Ensure cleanliness by tapping noisier to confirm it's filled correctly.
  • Main Road: Be aware of the area to maintain cleanliness.
  • Sprinkling linen straight to avoid irritation that could lead to bed sores.
  • Ensure that the opening of the pillowcase faces away from the door to prevent contamination.

Bed Preparation

  • Understand the difference between a closed bed and an open bed.
  • Perform aftercare after bed preparation:
    1. Remove PPE in the following order:
      • Neck Air Net
      • Face Shield
      • Face Mask
      • Gloves
    2. Perform hand washing after removing PPE.
