Introduction

  • Five effective note taking systems discussed
  • Each system represented by Street Fighter characters

1. Outline Method (Ryu)

  • Characteristics:
    • Straightforward and hierarchical
    • Simple structure
  • How to Use:
    • Create top-level bullet points for main lecture points
    • Use lower-level bullet points for details
    • On paper: space out main bullet points or summarize at the top
    • On computer: easy to add and format bullet points (ex: Evernote, Byword)

2. Cornell Method (Chun-Li)

  • Characteristics:
    • Developed by Walter Pauk in the 1950s
    • Divided into three sections
  • How to Use:
    • Divide paper into cue column (left) and note taking column (right)
    • Add a summary box below
    • Take notes in the right column during class
    • After class, fill in questions in the cue column and write a summary
    • Designed for reviewable notes without reworking

3. Mind Map Method (Dhalsim)

  • Characteristics:
    • Represents thoughts and connections visually
  • How to Use:
    • Start with a main topic in a circle at the center of the page
    • Branch out with subtopics in a tree structure
    • Useful for organizing ideas (e.g., blogging)

4. Flow Method (Blanka)

  • Characteristics:
    • Holistic approach to learning
    • Opposed to rigid transcription styles
  • How to Use:
    • Focus on understanding and representing the material in your own way
    • Not focused on recording verbatim notes
    • Use arrows, branches, and sketches to visualize connections
    • Aim to learn and document in a single pass

5. Write on the Slides Method (Zangief)

  • Characteristics:
    • Simplistic and convenient
  • How to Use:
    • Print lecture slides and write notes directly on them
    • Slides mirror the lecture flow, providing a timeline view
    • Less writing needed since slides contain key information
