“We set sail from the port of Saltes at 8:00 on Friday, August 3rd, 1492. We sailed southward with strong variable winds behind us until sunset; We then headed southwest, the route to the Canaries.” Christopher Columbus wrote these words on the first day of his famous journey. He noted down, day by day, everything that happened to him during his journey across the Atlantic Ocean. They set sail on Friday, look what happened to them 3 days later, on Monday, August 6th: “Pinta's rudder broke down. We think it's a trick by the ship's owner. Because he was not very happy about going on this journey.” The drama begins on day 3. We can take our snacks and continue reading this Captain's logbook. "See you in 500 years, Picard." "I'll see you too… in a few minutes." Picard, the captain of the Enterprise ship in Star Trek, whose story takes place in space in the 24th century, also has a logbook. Captain's Logbook, stardate: 46271.5. As you can see, this "Captain's Logbook" concept existed in the 15th Century and will continue to exist in the 24th Century... So what about in the 21st century that we live in? Today is indeed a great day to start writing our logbook! A Logbook for 21st Century Talents Do you know why we should keep such a logbook? Because Christopher Columbus, who was trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean, did not have a school to go to learn how to do this task. He wrote while doing, he understood while writing. He learned actively. He wasn't even aware of it at the time, but today it's called "project-based learning." In the project-based learning method, you do not start with knowledge. You act with the question, the problem, the scenario, and as you find your own answers, you write them down. If you are trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean, you look at the stars and take note; You listen to the winds, take notes, and a wealth of information is created in your logbook accordingly. Look, Columbus added this diagram to his logbook on Sunday, September 30rd, 1492... It shows how to calculate what time it is on that date by looking at Polaris, the pole star. Of course, we no longer want to make a star clock like this; We don't need to learn how to use a compass or a rudder. So, what could be the skill set we need to be successful in the 21st Century? A lot of research has been done on this subject and all of them are collected in an article here. "21st Century Skills". Here it says, here are the skills needed to be successful in the 21st Century and he lists them in detail. Unfortunately, it does not have a Turkish version, but we will develop it together now, don't worry. The most memorable thing in this entire article and the thing I want to emphasize the most is the 4C rule. There are 4 skills listed in English, all of which start with the letter C: Create, Circulate, Connect, Ve Collaborate. I translated these into 4 Turkish concepts, all of which start with the letter Y. Create… Yes, let's do it this way. Instead of create, we can say “yaratmak” or “yazmak”. Whatever skill we want to develop, we start it by writing in some way, right? Even the most creative works, such as painting and music, emerge by first putting ideas into writing. Then we have to "circulate" it, that is, put it into circulation, spread it. Publish it. It was not easy for me to translate the third C, the word “Connect”, because it means connection. But if we use our first skill, creativity, we can say “Yeniden bağlamak”. Bringing two different concepts together again. Creating a new connection. Just like the synapses in our brain. I translated our fourth skill into Turkish as "Yardımlaşmak" which means "collaboration". Thus, it was easier to remember. And to be successful in the 21st Century, we need to develop these 4 skills, all of which start with Y. So, how about developing a “summer project” for this? Okay, I promise from now on, I won't say anything that starts with "Y" anymore. Well! What if... It says here that one third of young people already share content on the internet. Instead of doing this sporadically, It recommends methods such as keeping a podcast or a blog to circulate regularly. We will do this too. And using my two favorite words in Turkish: Here and now! Now that we have locked the place and time, we can get to work immediately. Actually, we have already done a lot of things. Since the beginning of the video, I've been reconnecting what I read and what I watched. Meanwhile, I was writing these. So now I can start publishing immediately. Notion, which I have been using for a long time for my writings and notes, has a new feature. You can now publish any page or pages as a website. It was already possible to share any page with the "Share" button in the upper right corner. But with “Notion Sites” which is a new feature, it is possible to personalizing the site, ensuring that it is indexed by search engines, or connecting your own web address to your domain name. For now, I have started publishing only from a public address assigned by Notion. Now, I think the trick here is to be able to create and update our website with a tool we already use to take notes. Now, I will continue to show you the important steps of this, but at the end of the video, I will also share with you the template of this website that I have already prepared, you can move forward by making changes on it, so relax, just sit back and watch for now. In this project, I would like to introduce myself first. This will be a “landing page” for me, so it's like a business card in a way. So I want to add my picture, let's find something handsome like this. I can select any command I want in the menu that opens with the / sign. For example, as soon as I started typing the word "image" to add a picture, the relevant option appeared as soon as I typed "i" and I uploaded my picture. Now let me write my own information on the side. Yes... Blah blah blah, it's pretty good. Notion is not just a word processing program like Word. You can also create databases like in Excel. That's why I place such a dynamic blog structure in the middle of the page. Now, those who follow my channel will remember, I keep a database of even the t-shirts I wear. And I even created a workflow with it, but I imagined this - my landing page / website - as a logbook. I will write down what I read and watched here, as it is. Now the secret to the success of such a project is its simplicity. I know that much more complex systems and content production systems can also be used for a website, but after a while it becomes a little difficult for people to update such a complex structure. Things like where did we get into this, how did we organize it, etc... Therefore, psychologically, it pushes you towards constant procrastination. For example, I have now entered some information about this book that I mentioned in this video for the blog. Now let me take a nice photo of it. And let me add that. As soon as we did this, the small thumbnail on our home page appeared automatically. Because Notion does this automatically when you add photos to a detail page. If a new article or note you have written does not fit into the categories you have previously found, you can immediately create a relevant category here and assign to it. You can create a travel diary this way. You can note the recipes you like and then share them with the world. Or you can even create a portfolio website using your designs. Now, for example, my son volunteers at the library during the winter months. He puts the books in their places or when little children comes, he takes care of them and reads books to them. As a summer project, we asked him to write one review a week about the books he read and liked. He happily accepted, and now he is writing a somewhat meticulous review about his favorite book he read that week and publishing it online. So, this is what we call "Project-based learning". First of all, the project has a definition: Book review article. It has a duration: July and August, 2 months. It has a frequency: One article per week. And most importantly, he publishes it. In other words, he has a promise that he announces to everyone all over the world. It's a little harder to give up on it, or, to escape from it. So what's the reward? While doing all this, he acquires the skills and skill set required for the 21st Century. So yes, not everyone may have that much time, but especially my student friends, it is not a good thing to be idle for such a long time during summer vacation. "I voiced Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers". "As it is written there, students should not stay away from classes for too long during the long summer period." Experts say that giving such long breaks to learning tasks is not very beneficial. "He has to attend classes from here because the hotel has the best internet connection here." But sometimes you find or hear a very nice saying somewhere. There is no need to write a detailed page about it. Therefore, when I find such expressions worth underlining, I can create a section like this on my website instead of making such a detailed page for them. Now, maybe you will use the website you will create yourself as a CV when applying for a job, so let's add a CV-like section here. Let me place the important moments I experienced within my life route. This is nice too. Now let's put our contact information at the bottom of the page, so our rough draft site is complete right? No wrong. This is the biggest problem of websites. Which means once it is prepared, it is not updated afterwards. It remains like a brochure and is not dynamic. Because there are such complex tools that people do not know how to use them. As I said before, you can forget. However, this is part of my notebook. Therefore, I can update it whenever I want, from anywhere, from my mobile phone or any device. As I said, I published this website as a template. You can start using it for free right now from the link in the descriptions section. By using the link of Notion, with whom we have collaborated in this video and other videos, you can get more information about these Notion sites, and those who wish can upgrade their plans/free plans to use more features and experience other more advanced tools. If you want, let's take it a little more seriously for those who want to develop this skill set that is necessary in the 21st century. Let's set a deadline for those who want to participate in this summer project. Now this video will be released on Sunday, July 14, 2024. You have exactly 2 weeks. During this time, think carefully, move, write down what you see, read, hear to create your own notebook, your "logbook". Write, draw, erase, download my template, personalize, modify. Make it suitable for you. Create a concept. Let our Deadline be Friday, August 3rd! In other words, the anniversary of the first day Christopher Columbus set out on the journey that would eventually discover America. As you navigate the digital seas, look at the stars and take notes. Listen to the winds (i.e. trends), take notes. And when you reconnect all these notes, you will have created something brand new. Spread these, help your friends who are on that journey with you. Because this is the best way to explore in the 21st century.
