14th Grammar Lesson: Prepositions

Introduction

  • 6th part of speech from the 8 parts of speech.
  • Previous parts discussed: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb.
  • Prepositions link noun or pronoun with other words in the sentence to show relationships.

Definition

  • Preposition: A word that links nouns or pronouns with other words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) in a sentence.

Example

  • Without Preposition: The cat is sitting the table.
  • With Preposition: The cat is sitting under the table.

Types of Prepositions

1. Prepositions of Time

  • Describe when an event happened.
  • Examples: in, on, at, before, after.

Sentence Examples

  • My birthday falls in January.
  • My vacation ends on Monday.
  • It gets cold at night.

2. Prepositions of Place

  • Describe where something is in context to other.
  • Examples: under, above, in, on, at.
  • Note: 'in', 'on', 'at' can also be prepositions of time depending on context.

Sentence Examples

  • The books are on the table.
  • The plane is just below the cloud.

3. Prepositions of Direction

  • Describe where to go or place something.
  • Examples: to, into, of, from.

Sentence Examples

  • We went to London last week.
  • He went up the hill.

Prepositional Phrases

  • Phrase: Group of words.
  • Prepositional Phrase: Group of words containing a preposition.

Examples

  • The rabbit hopped through the garden.
  • The balloon drifted up the stairs.
  • The tiger crept slowly over the grass.
