ibxabien in this course like reading articles or writing essays s for this session we will discuss language used in academic texts in various disciplines and language specifically english before we begin let us first define some keywords we will meet along the way first is academic writing it is a kind of writing that is used in school divisibility manga papers or babasahin the guinea government into schools like articles books journals even newspapers second is the subject which is the topic of the text next is stone this pertains to the attitude of the author towards the topic or towards the texts heavenly discuss [Music] or whatsoever and we will see this through the word choice of the writer another fundamental word zombie villain yet to discuss the topic next is purpose this is the information that the writer aims to relay to the audience next is language language is the words used by the writer in discussing the topic since we are dealing with academic texts the language is expected to be formal then we have the audience it refers to the readers of the text see no asinis inuban expected the mukbang it is how the writer does the information now first person point of view second person or the third person remember in academic writing we always use the third person point of view next is style it refers to how a writer arranges his or her writing techniques and strategies in explaining the topic next is knowledge which is the amount of information the writer knows about his or her topic expert or knowledgeable young writer the readers can identify this based on the amount of information the writer has given in the paper finally explicit which means the information should be precise and exact meaning since academic writing it all that but the author's language is exact when i'm direct to the point now let's begin discussing academic writing as we have said academic writing is the kind of writing being used in schools guyana journals researches newspapers essays and others [Music] formal language language colloquial or jargon words or mana slayton make specific groups of people and of course all the information given by the author in the academic writing should be backed up with valid evidences from credible sources now let's talk about the four features of language capacity navigating features they mean the prominent characteristics of a tamiya and four main characteristics language first is formality formality reflects your dignified stance in writing as a member of an academic community this means that in your writing you should avoid colloquial words or expressions on formalities about one way is using expanded forms over contracted forms in contracted or shortened versions of filipino [Music] expanded forms so instead of using don't say do not in business shouldn't use should not another way to achieve formality is to choose one word verbs over two word verbs for example in this negative mess up you can just say ruin or damage look at the sample sentences with two word verbs and see the more appropriate verb you can use [Music] also to achieve formality we should avoid using abbreviations these are like contractions they are shorter versions of words for example do not use the word tom to mean tomorrow write the expanded word tomorrow another example is using asap to achieve formality we should avoid using this and just write the expanded form as soon as possible finally you should avoid using colloquial or idiomatic expressions since gusto nati machiva formality hindi tamas are very conversational sort of versorda ghana or gatta the second feature of language is objectivity it means that the focus of the information is on the topic and not on the writer him or herself academic paper and gamete netting point of view a third person greeting classic pronouns in business we need to follow instructions and about the meeting i the researchers need to follow instructions not the researchers second is avoid rhetorical questions because in academic writing we assume that the readers do not know the answer yet as i said earlier one purpose of academic writing is to inform us avoid a modern language that shows biases language for example in business and meeting the police investigators were shocked to see the results of the test unless objectiveness the police investigators did not expect the results in our second statement no emotional signal was implied about the police investigators the third language feature is explicitness it is the clarity of your writing structure eviks look at this example whose hope to provide quality education to learners having discovery 19 pandemic requires a lot of effort to reach out to students there are two statements here but the two are contrasting to one another so you need a clear connector to join these statements together explicitly can aggregate you know however it is [Music] the fourth feature of language is caution it refers to the careful attention to avoid sweeping general decisions look at this example government officials are corrupt this statement is not completely true government official statement we need to use some devices like modal verbs adverbs or even other verbs to improve the statement and avoid hasty generalization look at these improved versions some government officials may be corrupt corruption is commonly linked to some key government officials once again the four features of language are formality objectivity explicitness and caution at this point let's talk briefly about the types of writing styles how do you explain the topic are you telling a story are you describing it are you providing factual information to explain it or are you trying to convince your readers to stand with you about an argument about that topic for main writing stats narrative expository descriptive and persuasive to explain your topic in your paper similarly and narrative writing simply it is a writing style in which an author does a story be it fictional or non-fiction is again that's the narrative writing the second is the expository writing from the root word expose this style means you expose the topic by providing facts to [Music] a sense of sight smell hearing taste and touch i am persuasive writing about being argumentative writing this writing style is used when you want to give an opinion about a topic and you try to make your readers agree with you nonpersuasive writing research and arguments evidences once again the four writing styles are narrative descriptive expository and persuasive and that's it that's our first lesson for this quarter please make sure to subscribe to our channel so you would be updated of our every upload once again i am
