How to Pick a Hockey Stick: Shooting Left or Right

hey guys it's Jeremy from how to hockey with the hockey movement and in this video series we're going to help you guys better pick a hockey stick there's a lot of questions when it comes to picking a stick so we hope to answer a lot of those questions in this little mini series so in the first video we're talking about if you should shoot left or right second video we're talking about how to hold the hockey stick third video we're going to talk about how tall the stick should be or how short the stick should be the proper height and in the videos after that we're going to talk about curve lie and the Flex of the stick so let's get right to it talking about if you should shoot left or right determining whether you shoot right or left isn't too hard as long as you follow these tips so I'm a right-handed shot now this can sound a little confusing because I shoot right that means my left hand goes on top of the stick now why is the right handed shot well that's because when I'm holding the stick the stick is on the right hand side my body and you can see the curve opens up towards the net so with that curve there that allows the puck to come off the ice a little bit easier so with a right handed shot your left hand is going to be on top and the stick is on the right hand side of your body and with a left handed shot your right hand is going to be on top but the stick blade will be on the left hand side of your body so how do you determine if you shoot left or you shoot right the simple answer is that your dominant hand should go on top of the hockey stick so for me I write with my left hand that means my left hand usually does all the fine motor movements that's the one that you want on top of the hockey stick because these little movements with your top hand is going to make a big impact on the bottom so you can see just twitching my hand a little bit here is cupping the blade turning the blade that allows me to better control the puck so a lot of the puck control comes from moving that top hand that's why you want the handed as you fine motor skills like writing or eating cereal on the top because that's going to allow you to easily adapt to stick handling so what about the people out there who are left and right-handed you feel comfortable with either here's a really simple test that you can do pick up a broom or better yet a snow shovel it's even a better test and hold it now you can see I put my left hand on top and my right hand is on bottom this is the same way you're going to hold a hockey stick because your left hand is manipulating the location of the shovel right hand is there for extra power almost the same as you're doing with a hockey stick left hand is moving the top moving around pointing right hand is there for your power for your flex or your back-end so that's a good way to check alright that's it we're determining if you shoot left or you shoot right if you guys are looking for more tips on hockey sticks or just how to improve your skills in general don't forget to subscribe to our channel we do new hockey videos every single week thanks for watching the video I'll see you in the next one
