Components of Cytoskeleton

1. Microtubules

  • Largest filament (25 nm in diameter).
  • Made of tubulin proteins (alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin).
  • Forms from dimers creating protofilaments, which group into tubes.
  • Functions:
    • Maintains cell shape.
    • Aids in cellular transport via motor proteins (kinesins and dyneins).
    • Forms spindle fibers for chromosome separation during cell division.
    • Integral in flagella and cilia movement.
      • Cilia: Keep lungs free from dirt.
      • Flagella: Aid in bacterial movement.

2. Intermediate Filaments (IFs)

  • Intermediate size (10 nm in diameter).
  • Most stable component of the cytoskeleton.
  • Composed of various proteins, providing structural support.
  • Types of IFs:
    • Keratins: Found in epithelial cells.
    • Desmin and Vimentin: Support and regulate muscle cells.
    • Neurofilaments: Present in motor neurons.
    • Lamins: Help with protein binding and cell stability.
  • Maintain structural integrity and position of organelles.

3. Microfilaments

  • Smallest filament (7 nm in diameter), also called actin filaments.
  • Composed of actin monomers forming a double helix structure.
  • ATP powers assembly and function of actin.
  • Functions:
    • Maintain cell shape.
    • Assist in muscle contraction.
    • Guide white blood cells to infection sites.
