all right everybody welcome to our saturday special you know we get asked a lot of questions who's going to win the game this week is cone really six foot seven yes is blaine's mustache sentient yet but a question we get asked a ton is please explain betting to us we're going to do a very simple rundown of what it is because the booster club we know the booster bet shout out draftkings who we just announced the sponsorship deal with we want you to know that when you're making your bets we don't want you just out there just willy-nilly going about it we want you to understand where you're putting your money why you're putting your money and how you can win or get your heart broken and lose your money which is gonna happen both of those things the longer you bet so before we go any further make sure you hit that like button that subscribe button check us out on all platforms tick tock you can follow us at crane company on twitter instagram as well i'm gonna pass it over to our friend here david cohn to kick us off tony as someone who was told that math was my weak point in high school how dare they being a part of this i feel like i made it do you remember the time i mess up make fun of us for playing with those little toy cars in school yeah and now i'm like who's the dummy now here you go that's exactly right when they started putting letters in math that's what i was like you have english you have math keep them separate that's exactly right it's like we don't need them to break this down all right so let's start with betting odds obviously betting odds reflect the implied chance of an outcome in monetary terms american odds fractional odds and decimal odds but we're in america so we're going to marry let's say blaine and jake are playing a little one-on-one basketball on the fence we set that line at minus 120 thank you and plus 100 let's say that's a fair line i think you got it i think that line low-key kind of sucks what does that mean though if elaine beats jake at minus 120 you're gonna have a minus on one side and a plus on one side right yes so the minus is always the favorite yes the plus is always the underdog correct obviously by following pythagorean's theorem and common sense that if you bet on the favorite you are going to have to spend more money to win less money if that makes sense correct if you bet a hundred dollars on something minus 120 you are not going to win a hundred dollars back but there's a higher chance of that happening in you winning now obviously you get that 100 that you bet back plus what you won remember it's kind of like golf all right minus is better because that's the person you expect to win plus it's tougher so if i'm taking the underdog that plus bet if you put that money on me plus 100 to beat blaine and basketball which we all know that would have a good bet and that's an underdog bet if you if you bet on that you could bet eighty dollars to win a hundred dollars now that's not exactly the math but i'm just trying to give you an essence of of you bet less to win more therefore a lot of people will take the underdog so remember minus is the favorite plus is the underdog underdog you bet less you can win more favorite you bet more you win less but the odds of that happening are better something that i got confused about a lot is those numbers aren't exactly opposite you know so like maybe the line is minus 120 for blaine but plus 100 doesn't mean it's on it yeah not it's not plus 120 for you because the sports book is going to make money every sports book is going to make money no matter if you win or lose your bet they have the juice in there right so if you want to you know if you see something like let's just mention fractional odds real quick if you see something like the kentucky derby and you don't see plus 100 or minus one you know minus 500 those are fractional odds so rich strike winning the kentucky derby this year going off at 80 to 1. if you put that 100 bet down on that you're making 8 grand so in american odds that would be plus 8 000 yes whereas that's a real underdog situation they also have decimal odds which actually i've never been i don't know i've never been a fan of but it's actually even easier i'm still trying to figure out the dewey decimal system but look most of the sports book have american odds with a plus sign a minus sign just like she talked about so now let's break down what exactly you're betting on so let's start with a money line bet like we were talking about which yes because a money line bet is if you were to just take a team straight up but now let's switch it up so blaine and i are playing one-on-one basketball and i'm going off at -800 okay really i think is a is this minus 800 is a solid line let's whole numbers here yeah whole numbers okay money line means it doesn't matter how long it takes me to beat blaine how much happens if i win by one you win that bet yep right correct okay so now let's talk about you ty if we were to tie where to tie that's a push yeah a lot of times you win your money back everybody shakes hands yes no one likes any sports that tie no you know no that's why i don't really kissing your system that's a low-key soccer shot right there how about let's talk about spreads so let's handicap a match here okay let's just handicap that match so you and blaine are playing one-on-one in basketball what what are we handicapping that spread out i'm probably minus three and a half what are we playing two are we talking eleven we're grown up let's say we're playing two eleven minus three and a half playing two eleven let's just do it for this year well codename said he's minus eight okay let's see okay let's say blaine is minus three and a half in the basketball game between me those are probably one on one now yours will be the opposite you are plus three and a half because that's not the odds that it is that's what a handicapper is saying i think that you are three and a half points better than him so i'm going to handicap that alabama football playing georgia southern is not going to be a moneyline bet right you're going to have to take that with a point spread we go week one georgia versus oregon georgia is a minus point favorite is that what it is yeah it's minus 17 points and now i'm really not feeling about great about my prediction but it's minus 17 points is the spread so you're thinking georgia's gonna win this game by at least 17 points so if you flip it to the other side oregon to cover plus 17 points if you take the spread to cover that means the team has to lose by less than 17 points okay yeah so the best way i think to go about this is let's use the minus three and a half example playing to 11. if you decide because remember minus is the favorite in the odds and the spread plus is the underdog in the odds and the spread so if blaine is minus three and a half points favorited over me and you bet on blaine minus three and a half against me it's not just if blaine wins blaine can win and you can still lose your bet blaine has to win by four points or more because again what we call that half if you see three and a half and two and a half that's called the hook it's impossible in basketball to score a half point therefore there will be no ties or pushes on that so if it's minus three and a half and blaine wins by four points he wins that bet you win that bet it covers the spread if i win or i lose by three or less points because if he's minus three and a half i'm plus three and a half and you bet on me and i l i win or lose by three points or less you win your bet okay so it's pretty simple when you look at it uh we didn't want to dive too far down deep into the spread you talk about it against the spread and with the spread and all that we're not going there yet but just remember that minus number that is the favorite okay so it's about value because you in that situation money line right like if you if i think jake's gonna win this even though he's the underdog you should just take someone money line because you're going to win more money for the unit that you place we'll talk about units in a bit but if you think look i don't know jake might lose this but i think he'll keep it close then you want to take him with a few points you won't win as much money but you're still going to win the bet that's exactly right and and spreads and handicaps aren't just for high scoring sports even though it's more more popular there like we were taking hockey this year you can take a hockey team plus a goal and a half yes right so if you think the underdog you take them plus a goal and a half or minus a goal and it's more bang for your buck to bet on the underdog whether it's a spread or a money line so that's for winning or losing a contest let's talk about totals because a lot of people take overs and unders not only on points or runs or goals but also you know that's where it gets into picture props number of strikeouts over under break that down yes so an over under is actually a lot more simple than betting the spread it doesn't get really much simpler than a money line bet like we talked about earlier a bet straight up but overs or unders are the total amount of points that could be scored by both teams combined you could take overs or and unders for single teams for example let's use georgia and oregon and i'm just going to throw numbers out there if you took the georgia oregon combined total of let's say it's 50 points and you took the over at the end of the game you are betting that georgia and oregon together will score over 50 points combined if georgia wins 30 to 27 that is a total of 57 points you hit the over if you take the under that means you think they will score 49 or less points if they score 50 it's a push you when you get your money back you don't win anything you don't lose anything so if you take the under and it's 49 or less you will hit that now you do have single team unders and overs like i said where you may georgia may have an over under of 28 and a half points you're betting on georgia to either score 29 or more on the over or 28 or less on the under because remember that half is called the hook now when you have that over under it will give you odds so let's use georgia and oregon again let's say the over under is 50. and yeah and it's looking like georgia's looking great on offense oregon's great on offense and the over is the favorite to hit yes so the over may be at 50 points at minus 100. so the favorite or the most likely thing to happen is that george and oregon will score over 50 points so if you go against it if you want to bet the under and let's say it's plus 120 whatever you are saying that i think they will score less than 50 points and you'll get more bang for your buck but that's also according to the handicappers or vegas however you want to call it is the least likely thing to happen but remember humans are humans and sometimes just because you see a plus don't run away from it there's some really good underdog beds out there yeah and you can do this with player props as well i think tom brady is going to throw over 2.5 touchdowns today right i think that justin verlander is going to strike out more than 11.5 batters today so you can take the over under that's where player props come in how about parlays and same game parlays because you bet these a lot and they're really popular yeah so a parlay that's the one parlay because what we were talking about earlier was single bets so that's a single bet you're going to take 20 and bet on this one single thing to happen whether that's an over under on the total whether that's the spread of one team or even a player prop a parlay is when you take multiple bets and put them together as one bet to get a bigger bang for your buck because obviously it is a lot less likely for multiple bets to all hit the way you want so for example let's go back to the game basketball game between me and blaine let's take georgia and oregon and let's go ahead and just say auburn and penn state are playing if you bet all three of those and you can parlay two games a parlay can be two games it's anything more than a single bet but i like three k three team parlays and you can do it from different sports you can take georgia horse oregon and football the braves over the mets in baseball and the predators to win in hockey and combine all those in one so instead of taking twenty dollars on a minus one hundred dollar single bet and winning ten dollars if you put three of those together you can bet twenty dollars to win a hundred dollars depending on which bets you take you can take underdogs and mix them with favorites you can go all favorites you can go all underdogs but a parlay is just combining all those single bets or anything more than one single bet into a collective but remember you can hit two out of three and you don't win your money you can you have to hit every single one of them so if you're betting a 12-team parlay and you bet a hundred dollars on it to win five thousand dollars that's great you can hit 11 out of 12 bets and you still lose that so while there is a lot of risk there's a lot of rewards so i like doing the parlay bets big barley yeah i i enjoy parlays because i think they're more fun it's more exciting and always remember this the last leg is always the hardest so if you bet three games one of them starts at one o'clock one of them starts at four o'clock and one of them starts at seven o'clock that one at seven o'clock it's gonna be a fist fight if you win the first two and then parlays you can bet spreads yes money over it can be whatever bet you want to combine with other bets and if you do push on one of those bets in a parliament call here it'll it'll change your odds in the bet but it still won't you won't lose the bad exactly so for example you take those three teams i talked about okay and your first two bets hit and then your third bet was you took the georgia oregon over at 50 points and that third bet the last one you had to hit was a tie they scored a combined 50 points with this a put which is a push you don't lose your bets but it takes the total amount of money that you could win so if you took those three and you bet 20 to win a hundred dollars and the first two hit and the third one tied you still have that twenty dollar bet you still hit but now you only won sixty dollars because it's like you won two bets instead of three so that doesn't kill your parlay at all it takes the money down uh but no that's a good point i'll tell you a same game parlay which that like i've been taking in major league baseball is you know you think the braves are going to beat the mets money line and then you want the both teams to combine under or over in runs 8.5 or 9.5 that's a nice same game parlay you have to hit both of them to win but your odds are usually a little bit better i don't want to go into units too much but i do think it's important to at least tell people you know a unit is the dollar amount placed on a wager with the dollar amount remaining consistent on each bet each unit or bet should be one to five percent usually of whatever your starting bankroll is some people bet ten dollars and that's what they want to do every bet some people bet a hundred dollars phil mickelson might bet a million i don't know but it's just important to know because you may hit a hundred um favorite bets in a row and not make much money you may miss 99 of those and hit one huge underdog bet like we were talking about rich strike that could fund your whole bankroll so units are important to keep up with later units are the most important to me because that's the money you're going to win units are the bankroll like you said and that's where you got to be pinpoint be precise and you know what we will be back with another episode if you guys want to tell us in the comments if you want another betting episode i know we started very elementary watson but we can get pretty in depth
