Understanding Health and Wellness Dynamics

today we're going to talk about the difference between health and wellness often we use these terms interchangeably but really when we talk about health the dimensions of health they're going to seem very similar to the dimensions of wellness that you just learned about there is a minor difference however health is the capacity to leave us satis lead a satisfying life and fulfill ambitions and accommodate change wellness is about your ability to make choices that support this so wellness is about knowing and being aware of your health and making behavioral choices to support your health so health is as is wellness specific to a person's life it's personal it's a personal uh assessment today that you'll do with regard to your own wellness and health it's dynamic which means that it changes day to day it changes based on the choices that you make daily it's holistic it's not just being free of disease being you know not ill it is if you look at it as a spectrum illness or disease would be on one side health would be on the other and wellness would be all the decisions and choices and your knowledge about your health your awareness of your health that allows you to change um the state of your health although you are more healthy when you are not ill moving on a positive continuum of wellness you could actually have an illness or disease and be making choices be aware of your health and be making choices to improve it and have you been moving in a positive continuum of health and wellness so the dimensions of health are really no different than the divisions of wellness and we've gone over those both in your previous video and on your you examine those in your own personal health and wellness through your wellness self-assessment i think it's important and you've probably already already realized this as you've gone through the self-assessment you've realized that in many ways these dimensions are not they don't stand on their own they're not dependent but rather they are they're not independent but rather they are interdependent they interact and overlap with each other so for example your social wellness or health can obviously affect your mental and emotional status your spiritual health can affect your emotional and mental status as well as i mean they all can can interact and engage so so if you're not physically active you may not feel emotionally stable i know that's true for me i really like when i um exercise on a regular basis i just i make better choices i react more responsibly with regard to my emotions i'm more reactionary when i'm not physically active in my daily life and many of you have experienced this as well so i want you to take a moment to look at the interactions of these dimensions on a holistic model and in just a moment you're going to be actually plotting your own personal wellness or dimensions of health and wellness on a similar model what we would want to see if we were to plot each score from each of your dimensions of health and wellness we would hope to see that the healthier you are the more well you are the more round and the wider your wellness profile would be so for example in a moment you'll be plotting this now i don't really expect that anybody's wellness scores would um be this low but for an example if you look at this with regard to emotional wellness if i were to plot or environmental wellness so if i were to plot my environmental wellness on this on this plot right i would look at my environmental scores which were emailed to you so all the when you completed the form after you completed that form it was sent to your email so you can go through and look at the scores that you gave yourselves um on each question there were 10 questions and you had a maximum of two points per question so if i answered two on all of my questions my environmental wellness score would be way out here at 20 right now if we're honest with one another it's likely that we didn't score 20 all the way around although that would indicate that at this time point in our life that we had a very well balanced holistic wellness profile more than likely you're going to have profiles for like environmental wellness that maybe for this example this person may be scored 18 on environmental wellness maybe 19 on physical wellness their social wellness was a little lower maybe this was like uh 16 looks like about 15 or so here similar uh maybe 16 on their mental wellness and their emotional wellness they scored fairly low let's say that's uh probably around 13 or so all right and look at this uh plot for this person so it is fairly wide if you look at it their emotional and physical wellness are pretty well developed but they have indentations on social mental emotional and spiritual so these are these are little lower points on their scale right so if i were um to quantitatively assess this right like social that's probably one of my weak points so what i might want to do is say that my weak points what are the things i identified that are things i don't do well so here are the things i do well here are the things i don't do well and what i could do is i could create a goal for social wellness so maybe for example let me go back here are some of the questions that i i was asked with regard to social wellness okay so some of the questions for social wellness were things like i have a network of friends and family i contribute time money and social uh to social and community projects i regularly spend time with people i like i balance my own so you can kind of go through some of these questions that you were asked and think what kind of things what kinds of things really were my my weaker points spending time with people i like that was a weak point for me balancing my own needs with the needs of others i tend to be a supporter i tend to uh fall into that parent role and i'm always worried about um you know taking care of my parents taking care of my child balancing work and social so i tend to kind of prioritize others needs over my own i don't spend enough time with people that i like there are lots of people that i can think of that i thought oh we should have dinner sometime and i never caught right so i kind of look at these questions and i should have kind of been reflective and if i didn't do a great job with it the first time i could come back and i can say all right what are some things that i want to work on i can set a goal right if this is my weak point that's the point that's sort of dented in in my wellness profile then i can come back to this and say hey you know what can i can i work on um you know one of the things i want to work on is and i'm going to make this a priority i would have starred this is calling people that i like and finding times to meet up and i'm going to set a goal of something like i'm going to have dinner with friends at least and i think how often i do this with my parents every two weeks so you know at least once a month i'm going to make a you know pretty easy goal once a month i want to go have dinner or do some activity with friends once a month and i can think of like a list of people that i wanted to do things with and i'm going to make that's my star right that's my thing i'm gonna work on and so what i hope is when i come back and do this wellness profile again because remember it is dynamic it is not static i would hope that what i'll do is i'll grow my social wellness and then when i come back to do this again i will have been a little further out on this continuum so if i were to outline like my my wellness um i'm going to have a a nicer curve right a a cleaner curve a bigger curve so what i would like for you to do now is to go to your own well actually don't do this now but we'll do it later so later what you'll do is you'll go to your own profile and you're going to make your own you're going to kind of plot your own dimensions of health and wellness and i'll give you i'll give you something to do that on and you can actually do it on a powerpoint and just use a pen take a pic take a little snapshot of it and you're going to turn that in you know screenshot you're going to turn that in for your assignment today but be thinking of things that you can do and goals you can set and how should i be growing how should i be pushing myself as we talk through the rest of the lecture so that you can do your own wellness profile graphic which will be something like this and you can see examples of other people's here and you'll outline it and kind of talk about it so if you think about where you are now as you are in adolescence and transitioning to young adulthood it is health and wellness is really related to your ability to cope with a lot of the interactions and transitions that you have in your life you have experienced many over the last few years and and actually have been challenged even more with regard to um covid and um you know just in the last week changing from face to face to online now we're going back face to face so think about transitions um but there are some that are specific just to you with regard to you know you're taking more responsibility for your own life your your you've got more power and control over your life so you've increased autonomy and you're able to to express yourself um outside of your family unit now as an individual um you have probably increased responsibilities um you're you're now increased industry meaning that we're expected to you're expected now to be doing more to to actually doing more work on your own um your relationships are intensifying and have been since you since you entered adolescence and in some cases some of our body structures are still changing you know now that we're eating our own particularly this is in adolescence mostly mostly about growth but it can also be about uh maturation you know guys are putting on more muscle or maybe if you're less active you're dealing with issues of weight and body composition and so those changes are all challenges to your health and wellness but those challenges within those challenges we find growth and maturity if you respond correctly so everything is about being aware of and this is the area of wellness being aware of what is changing what is happening with you and making choices that lead to a healthier you so wellness is about that awareness and those choices which affect the dimensions of health so when you think about things like uh things that often happen during transitions the dimensions of health that focus on transition is you know our transition being belonging becoming who am i who am i becoming as a person to what groups am i connected to what kind of groups do i have sense of belonging within and you know who am i what am i becoming so what accomplishments am i striving for what are my goals and this may be it's easy to really look at with regard to education and career but it could be any area or any dimension of health or wellness again it's a personal journey it's not a single event no single event determines your overall wellness but it's an ongoing process and it's it's as though you're working on a continuum going into positive and negative direction based on every choice and every single event that happens but but but a single event doesn't change your health right it just maybe you're you're you're fluctuating slightly on wellness on your uh on your choices right but it's really a number of choices it's not a single choice that is a determinant of your health and wellness so it's easy to think about you know okay so i'm trying to make i'm trying to be healthy with regard to my nutrition and diet well eating a snickers bar one day doesn't destroy your health or wellness profile but making choices every day is what really leads to it what are your overall choices what are the choices that are really on a consistent and routine basis affecting your health and so that's why the assessment that you did was really always looking at what do i do routinely what do i do regularly and if you feel like you didn't answer that appropriately that you were just thinking about one thing that you did today go back and answer that survey again and reassess your result results because ultimately your health and wellness are up to you you choose the combination of healthy choices and you decide how you balance your health and the choices for your health always we want to remember to do things in moderation not too much or too little of anything usually that's a potential problem you can look at that with regard to exercise it's a good example of that too little exercise you're going to have poor cardiovascular health or too much exercise can weaken your immune system we actually just talked talked about this and exercised physiology with regard to exercise stress and over training so everything in moderation really typically is a good way to go with regard to positive things right um a positive thing overdone can become a negative thing and an example of that would be exercise of course we want to avoid the negative behaviors like you know tobacco use and things like that that are not obviously that they don't have any positive health benefit we also want to make sure that we we kind of follow the best practice of how to address our health and wellness once we are aware of it we don't want to be reactive or curative you know i mean we we have to be curative sometimes when we find ourselves in a state of poor health but reactive or curative approaches actually we worry a lot um even about our health not only when we're sick you know we we don't necessarily want to think about um things go badly let me just fix it for example like if i'm sick i'm just gonna take you know a little medicine i'll feel better but what about perhaps taking an approach that rather than is reactive or curative is proactive and this is what we really want to do which is adult adopt that lifestyle that routine of habits that ultimately are going to lead to being healthier an example here is an approach of i'm building for my future what do i want to do for my body today that lays that foundation for a lifetime of being healthy so that really involves thinking about you know not overdoing it at this point so i'm injuring myself because that actually has long-term effects on our ability to be healthy and active the rest of our lives but what kind of things can we do now to lay that foundation for a health a healthy long high quality of life which is really making good wellness choices really being in a state of wellness that is well developed so that idea of wellness is a way to reflect on the choices that you're making and if you don't take time to do that you really aren't investing in your wellness you're just allowing your health to happen to you um making informed choices taking responsibility for how we live so that our sense of wellness is really influenced by a lot of people you know um our family our friends um so our peers it's also affected by the culture in which we live and the culture doesn't necessarily mean a location it it often has to do with more than just the location it's an interaction between the location and the people that we live within also affected by the media we can have kind of a counterculture media that doesn't necessarily always reflect good well behaviors but you know we make those choices and these are influences that that often take those choices and and put them in a sort of a different a different light than what if we were to take ourselves out of those influences and think personally what do i want to do as opposed to you know what is what is healthy for me what is the right choice for my long-term health often we get caught up in being influenced by things other than our own personal values and reflections so we can take those influences think about what is positive and what is negative because there are some positive things out there sometimes there's a counterculture movement that actually is really positive and sometimes you know it's negative so positive family influences would be a good place to kind of start to think about what influences my health what influences my choices what influences what i value well family is one of the primary influences on all of us to this point and we're just starting to break away and kind of creating our own personal values you know they have positive influences on your education often you know advice that parents give you about staying healthy you know wear your coat outside so you don't catch a cold or values of your family can actually influence your choices you know if you have a family that values sport and physical activity that's a positive influence in your growth and development towards your health and wellness you may also find a lot of support in family emotional support when things are stressful so there are positive influences that you can get from your family and from other avenues if you think about it what are your positive influences from society you know probably part of the reason you're in college is because societal societal influences on your life college is a good thing right so pursuing an education is a good thing those influences can also be negative so if we look at family influences you know families aren't always fully functional you know sometimes parents really over pressure their children or they they they use the wrong reward system that really is a negative impact on it on a student maybe parents are really aggressive or poor or role models i mean you can think of all these different influences can have positive or negative influences on your own personal values and so what you have to do is think what are my own personal values with regard to my health and wellness and reflect on those and then examine whether your actions sorry whether your actions are actually meeting your expectations of your own personal positives for your health and wellness we also get positive messages from the media you know if we like uh online influences they can be highly motivational there can be a role model that you really want to pursue physical activity because of and those messages can be negative unfortunately as well you know sometimes the media has an ability to encourage unhealthy choices i think about all the um all of the the twitter challenges and things like that the tick tock challenges that people like engage in and how negative that is you know right so um what are the messages that you're getting and how do you balance those messages and how do you try to leverage the positive messages and kind of dampen the negative messages where are you seeking your information is is the media information that you seek positive for the most part or how do you balance the input of media in your life so that you can make your own values um more known to yourself and have those values be influential on your health and wellness so there's an idea of balancing you know balancing online presence of certain messages in your life balancing the amount of time you spend watching a certain channel you know even the news can be overwhelming at times where is the balance and what do you how does that how does that medium affect you or influence you where are the positives where are the negatives what kind of balance does it need in your life you think a positive and negative influences on body image you know there are a lot of positive body image uh messages that are out available in the media today and there are lots of negative body images um within our culture that are are imposed on us and and and actually within your peer group are you getting um images body images and body messages that are positive from your peers so think about where are the influences of the things that actually affect my health coming from being aware of them with regard to wellness that part of wellness of being aware and understanding where the influencers are coming from allows you to determine what do i listen to how do i take it in and then how do i then make choices for myself that are more positive for my own personal health all in each dimension of health and wellness we have a a lot of influences that we maybe don't even pay attention to where they're coming from you know our views and our understanding of health is different across cultures and north american cultures tend to think about disease from a scientific point of view we largely rely on western medicine and and treatments increasingly we're looking at more holistic approaches to health and medicine but where are you looking you know what cultures are you looking to for input where can you find positive information outside of your culture what can we gain from learning about other cultures it also can affect your wellness and ultimately your health many non-western cultures have a stronger uh spiritual quality than our western cultures and they understand disease in terms of a person's spiritual harmony with oneself or their environment and we don't tend to think that way we tend to think disease cure you know that kind of that approach we don't think about we think about physical wellness certainly being a dimension of our our health and wellness that affects all other dimensions but we don't think about we don't think about the interaction between environment and spirit as much as eastern cultures do so really the idea of today is thinking about those dimensions of health which you've been introduced to through a video through the survey and understanding that your health is multi-dimensional that you have to make informed decisions and those those decisions that you make in one area of your health and wellness relate to other dimensions of health also where are your perspectives from where your decisions about health being influenced through your family your peers media and your culture remember that the journey towards health is a lifelong journey and you're making decisions today that will affect your health and wellness tomorrow but no single decision actually puts your health or wellness in jeopardy for the most part for the most part it's a routine that you're creating and habits or routines take some time to actually become more permanent so if you want permanent wellness if you want a permanent high quality of life with regard to health and wellness then setting those patterns now and maintaining them for a long period of time are what's most important
