F1 Sprint Changes for 2023

Overview

  • In 2023, the F1 Sprint format is undergoing significant changes to bring more drama, jeopardy, and glory.

Previous Format (2022)

  • Qualifying set the grid for the Sprint.
  • Sprint results set the grid for the Sunday Grand Prix.

New Format (2023)

Friday

  • Single Practice Session
    • Only practice session of the weekend.
    • Teams have one hour to:
      • Hone setups
      • Understand tires
      • Finalize cars
  • Traditional Qualifying
    • Sets the grid for Sunday's Grand Prix.
    • Determines Pole Position.

Saturday

  • Sprint Shootout

    • Replaces FP2.
    • Shorter qualifying session to decide the order of the Sprint in the afternoon.
    • Format:
      • Q1: 12 minutes
      • Q2: 10 minutes
      • Q3: 8 minutes
      • 7-minute breaks in between sessions.
    • Mandatory tire choices:
      • Medium tires for Q1 and Q2.
      • Soft tires for Q3.
    • Drivers in Q1 have:
      • Time for two runs, potentially with a pit stop.
    • In Q2 and Q3:
      • Only time for two time laps.
      • No time for fresh tire stops.
  • Sprint Race

    • 100 km race (approximately 30 minutes).
    • Pure racing, focused on driver and car performance.
    • Point distribution remains the same:
      • 8 points for the winner.
      • 1 point for 8th place.

Sunday

  • Full Grand Prix
    • Chance to earn a maximum of 34 points over the weekend.
    • Known and loved full race format.
