mpc3 is out now It's been out since January and it is the new firmware OS for the MPCs in standalone So the main thing that I want to tell you which could be considered tip number one is that anything that I'm going to tell you in this video despite the MPC that I use can be done on the any MPC That means any modern-day MPC the MPC1 OnePlus the key37 all of that it works on there The sample I will use in this video will come from this website which is tracklib.com which has a vast library of samples and songs that you can get cleared and now royalty-free samples which I will be using in this video If you're familiar with places like Splice Loop Masters etc Well Tracklib is those places on steroids Speaking of which they have a limited time offer where if you bring your unused credits to Track Live from places like Splice Loop Masters or any other place where you shop for your sample libraries well they will match those deals for a limited time only All you have to do is follow three simple steps and you get access to Grammy awardwinning sample packs made by the best sound designers in the market As a longtime subscriber to Track Lib I want to give them a special shout out for supporting this video Thank you so much for the sponsorship And if you're interested in any of this stuff and want to learn more follow the link in the description box One of the biggest new features of 3.0 0 And I'm sure everybody noticed is the new main screen It can be quite confusing for someone that's coming from 2.0 but I'm here to just show you some of the best things about it So the first thing that people ask as far as tips they always say like "How would you rename the track?" Because it used to be you just double tap on the screen and it will give you access to renaming a track Now you would long press on this part of the screen and then it brings up a multitude of options So this track right here should be Bobby Brown and not Bobby Brown So I can just rename it so that it is spelled correctly There you go Another tip that I want to show you and that is possible in 3.0 has been the most requested feature is being able to rearrange tracks Now we have that option now So if I wanted to simply put this in position number five I can put this in position number five by moving my data wheel or by I guess doing this right here And once I tap on the arrow sign it will rearrange that track So now it's on track number five instead of being on track number one And now I can see everything prior to that which is the drums like I that's how I normally arrange stuff Another dope tip is a simple one and that's track duplication It used to be in the pencil sign right over here Like if you hit the pencil sign you would have access to duplicating tracks It still is over there But also if you press this right here you can simply do that on the screen Now I have two samples of the Bobby Brown joint that I did which and if you don't want to duplicate that track and it was a mistake you can always undo and bring it back How's this track sound anyways sounds pretty decent I ain't going to even hold you And if you want to have access or see how this track was made uh I recommend checking out my MPCX Masterass Another tip that I want to show you is the new channel mixer So one of the things about the MPC 2.0 I never liked was channel mixer The channel mixer looked terrible Now we have adopted pretty much the same vibes from the Kai Force inside of the MPC's right now in the 3.0 OS So you can access it by either hitting the channel mixer button on your MPC or you can just press this button right over here and it will bring you right into the new channel mixer where you can see everything in full effect so that you have access to mixing like how you would in a DAW Another thing if you want to do pan and volume you would just click on some of these buttons on the bottom over here And you can see it says pan volume You can do sends returns effects and IO I actually have a full video breaking down how this works and how to mix inside of the MPC It will be linked in the description box Another cool tip that I have to show you let's go back into the main screen is something that most people overlook and that is the new arrangement So from this window right here you can just double tap on here and you can go right into your grid Of course you can press the grid button on your respected MPC but I find that to be very convenient just so you can get uh used to the workflow However that's not what I'm trying to show you There is a list mode and what list mode does is allow you to see other things like the velocity So you can change whatever the note is and all of that if that is your cup of tea And if you just want to get to those events uh you just simply access that You can also affect things like probability which allows the notes to be played randomly So if you were to go let's say down to 60 50% it will play 48% of the time if you have it at 48% of the time And if you want to mess with the velocity right over here you can simply do that And of course if you want to go back into the grid and mess with velocity and stuff like that in it more traditional way you have access to that You would just hit the drop down menu and then you can mess with the velocity one at a time I actually have a full video talking about list mode in coming down in the near future I actually have it recorded already One of the biggest things that people ask me is about loading multiple programs similar to how you would do it in 2.0 Well it is a more efficient way to do that Let's say that we're in here We're in the content folder which is in the browser Should be everybody's default where you have your drums and stuff like that too So I have this acoustic kit I can load it right into this track right here But what if we want to load up another one or a different one on a different track while keeping those same drums well you simply do this right here You go to your next uh track right over here And then you would just select load to new track And once it loads in we can go to the main screen Go to the main And you can see is on track number two So now I have two different programs loaded into the MPC Another cool feature about this is if you're messing with some drums let's say I want to replace that and then go right into the wave for uh forms right over here Then I can go search and replace that kick I'll just type in kick Select the kick So load And now it is replaced that kick that I had before In hindsight of that if I just want to simply load it into pool I could just load to the pool Go to sample assign it is in my pool Another hot topic is editing in the arranger So I have this track right here and I might want to edit some stuff So the first thing I will do is press the menu button and go into arrange Of course I could do this right here where I press the press and hold menu and then press the correlating button which is the pad and it'll go into the arranger But the main thing I want to do is maybe edit some stuff from the drum track So the drum track is around here I will go to the drums stretch the screen and take a good look Now if I want to edit some stuff right here in the arranger all I have to do is hit this up arrow right here and then use the selection tool You can also stretch it out and it'll correlate with the arranger And then I can erase stuff just like I would if I was in the grid So from here I would press and hold shift choose cut and then now I have an instant drop Please note that you will not be able to edit anything unless you have done the exact following thing right here You see this loop point you need to set your loop point So you can set your loop point to whatever you want Drag it over to the point that you want and then start to edit from right there Also a important mental note is looking at the top part of the screen So if you look at the top left side of the screen you can go from the arranger to the grid to list mode And in hindsight of that if you was go to the main screen and you wanted to see the grid you can go to that grid and still go to the arrangement right there Another cool tip is making a key group from a drum program So we have this track right here and it has a bass right here on this pad What you can do is double tap on that visual of that 808 and then just press this icon right here and it will give us a separate key group So in theory if I was to go back to the main screen this has created a new track with just those 808s in a key group You could then detect the key which the key is already set right here It's a E minor Go back to that track and then set it up for success So all you have to do is press this right here which will bring us into that mode and set it up for a E minor Another cool tip that I have for you is when you go into your key group there are two different modes So in this new mode you have all these new features that you have uh like setting up different filters pitch and everything else So you can have your sound that you want to manipulate done in many different ways However if you are a classic MPC head 2.0 and down you would just go into legacy mode and it will make everything simple and sweet and bring you back into the legacy features I will explain this fully of how key groups work in a future video So I have a new track pulled up It sounds like this right here But what I want to do is just highlight a specific part of it so that I can get to the meat of this video Let's just say I want to add a loop to this part of the track right here but I don't want to go through all of the processing of time stretch and all that I just simply want to warp it so that it fits to this track So let's go ahead and find the sample real quick Track li has provided me with a percussive loop So it's a afro percussive loop that sounds like this I will load it into the pool and then I will go into sample edit From here I know that this loop is a two bar loop because I've counted the bars So all you would have to do is just play it 2 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4 And since I already know that it's two bars we're going to go right into chop mode From the chop mode screen I'll simply just do either regions or threshold chop I'll just go ahead and do threshold chop and then press and hold shift convert and then select audio track from samples So normally it will be on the new drum track using slices but I want to use audio track from samples So from here you don't want warp enabled on All you had to do to use the new feature is turn that off and create a new track We already know it's two bars Do it and then it is done So from there go into your arranger and you'll see it'll be in the arrangement If I was to play it from the very beginning it sounds like this And if I want to drag it over it's on the cursor So I would highlight all those slices over here And then I could just drag it over Or I can just copy or cut move the playhead and then paste it And then what do we have and since it's two bars I need to paste it again So I'll just move the playhead over to the second bar and then or the third bar rather And then I will go paste Boom And if I need to make any adjustments to the mix of course simple as this Just move it on up or go over to channel mixer move it on down So the 16 level button has seen a couple of new features So I have a new track that sounds like this and I want to add some ratcheting to it Uh the high hats that is And normally I would just do not note repeat but I find this to be very simple So next thing you want to do is hit this 16 level button And you'll see some of the normal stuff like velocity tune filter and layer But you'll see things like slice decay probability and now ratchet So now that we have rationing on if I was to press on these pads my high hats will give me different ratchets So from here I could just record something in So overdub play start And here we go And what do we have so the 16 level button has some pretty dope ratcheting features just in case you want to give your drums a different look Not many people know this but the MPC has a step sequencer I can press this button right here and it will bring me into the step sequencer where I have access to all the different tracks Or you can go into your menu and then select step sequencer The step sequencer can be used for a multitude of things You can use it for your automations You could use it for velocity You can even use it for the probability tune and so forth I do have a full entire video about the step sequencer I have it linked in the description box One of the most underrated and underused buttons on the MPC happens to be the erase button And you need to know it now more than ever because of the new arranger So how it works in the new arranger is that you would set up a loop start and end point and then you would choose to erase So if I wanted to erase a certain part I would go to a specific track Let's say I wanted to delete some of the 808 or something like that I'll press the erase and then you can choose from whatever sequence that you're using You can also delete automation notes accept notes or just all I'll hit do it And you'll see that everything has disappeared However I find it easier to use just this right here the selection tool and just delete everything per usual and you get more of a refined detail that way However I know there are people that want to utilize that erase button or you might not have known that And as always you can always hit the undo button and have everything back to normal And and if you like what you did then you can press shift and then undo and it will take everything back out Since it is a new OS there are new things that are in preferences Uh one of the things that stick out to me happens to be some of the hardware features Now in the hardware features you might want to dim your screen You might want to change the screen dimming feature You might want to even change the brightness Well you can do that in this update In the general tab you have other things like you can change the vintage mode So if you want to set it to the older MPC stuff none of that has been removed from 3.0 However again there are a new offsets of features that you should explore So explore them You can change your sequencer to the different resolutions and then you can just parlay with whatever you feel in terms of your project So if you go into project defaults you can go and change the project defaults Like if you want to work at a specific BPM depending on your style of music then you can do so You can change the default mode to where the screen you can set it to either main mode or to sound So when you go to a new project you can select the sound Uh you can set your default bars and so forth Another tip yes you can still have multiple sequences So if I like sequence one I can hit this pencil sign over here and then say copy sequence So I can copy sequence one into sequence number two and I can change the name Let's change it like half I'll just put half or something like that And then hit do it And now I have a new sequence I can work with And you can also go into your arranger and you can insert that particular sequence Or if you're the type of person that works in song mode well you can do the old school song mode simply by inserting your new sequences and arranging it in here As you can see here's sequence one and then there's half sequence However I think it's just a whole lot more streamlined if you just change your sequence in here so that you can record on any track that you want So if you wanted to change up the bass notes or something like that since I'm on this right here uh this part maybe I want to change up the bars So let's record that in then play Turn the loop off so that we can have continuous play And then you can have your whole entire field change depending on how long your sequence is when you're in the arranger One of the biggest questions that people ask me is can you load up your old beats well technically yes but there are some catch 22 So if I was to go into my browser and then I was to go into my old drum or my old tracks then I can go and select let's say all the flavor Let it load It says all sequences You can load either a selected sequence So I'll load in full beat Do it And then it's right there You can simply go back into that exact same browser folder select that track select that sequence that you started from and then rework your track in 3.0 And this was in I did this one back in 2.7 I believe However there's more to that story And this is where controller mode comes in handy as a safety net 2.15 still pulls up on your MPC because it's still loaded in the background So all you have to do is just use the provided wire from your MPC and that hooks up to the USB of your computer It's always provided by a Kai Make sure it's plugged in Go to your menu and then you will go into controller mode by hitting this icon right here It will ask you to go into controller mode Go into controller mode It will then pull up your SD card and your hard drive if you have one inside of your MPC You can close those out And then you will pull up the MPC software Click on your MPC software Install on your computer if you haven't Once the software has loaded on your computer it will load the legacy software on onto your MPC And from there you can just go and navigate to your browser and then select your drive of choice My drive of choice is drive J I pull up that track call the flavor pull it up it will load the track immediately and then you can just play the full beat Hopefully Akai will allow us to keep 2.0 in the software so it can pull up but I can understand if they want to ditch the OS running in the background because it will kind of make things a little bit more wonky having both Let me know how you feel about this video I wanted to do the same thing I think I did this video last year and it was a hit And I want to give a special shout out to Jay Freshman because this wasn't an original idea or anything like that and he's a content creator that I also think that you guys should check out that gives great and valuable tips on the MPC and that's how we should do in this community uh off top you know but yeah let me know how y'all feel in the comments section until next
