Enema Administration Procedure

Patient Preparation

  • Provide privacy to the patient.
  • Explain the steps of the procedure to the patient.
  • Position the patient in a side-lying position with knees bent close to the chest for easy access to the rectum.
  • Use absorbent pads beneath the patient to catch any spilling enema fluid.

Pre-Insertion Preparation

  • Remove the protective cap from the catheter tubing.
  • Apply lubrication to the tip of the tubing to prevent trauma during insertion.

Insertion of Enema Tip

  • Insert the lubricated tubing tip into the rectum about 2 to 3 inches.
    • Avoid inserting too far to prevent trauma.
  • Apply steady, gentle pressure during insertion.
  • Use a side-to-side motion and direct the tip towards the navel for easier insertion.
  • Never force the enema tip into the rectum to avoid causing bleeding or trauma.

Administering the Enema Solution

  • Unclamp the enema tubing to allow the solution to flow slowly into the rectum.
  • Communicate with the patient as the fluid starts to flow.
  • Once the solution is fully administered, clamp the tubing and withdraw the catheter.

Post-Administration

  • Educate the patient to retain the enema solution as long as possible for better effectiveness.
  • Provide privacy to the patient once the procedure is complete.

General Tips

  • Ensure adequate lubrication to avoid discomfort.
  • Adjust the patient's position if necessary for better access to the rectum.
  • Control the flow rate of the enema fluid to ensure patient comfort.
  • After procedure, dispose of soiled materials properly and perform hand hygiene.
