Overview

This lecture provides directions and sample questions for an English listening comprehension test, followed by test content including short conversations, longer dialogues, and talks, focusing on understanding spoken English, implied meanings, and vocabulary.

Test Structure & Directions

  • The test consists of three sections: short conversations, longer conversations, and talks.
  • Listen carefully; conversations and talks will not be repeated.
  • Answer questions based on what is stated or implied.
  • Do not take notes, write in the test book, or turn pages until instructed.
  • Fill in the correct answer choice on your answer sheet.

Part A: Short Conversations

  • After each conversation, answer a related question by choosing the best answer from four options.
  • Questions test understanding of implications, suggestions, and main ideas.
  • Common themes include opinions, advice, inferences, and implied actions.

Part B: Longer Conversations

  • Listen to longer dialogues, then answer several questions about each.
  • Example: Bob is unhappy with his much shorter than expected haircut and people tell him it will grow back.
  • Another example: A man regularly talks to his great-grandmother, who predicts storms by feeling joint pain due to dropping air pressure.

Part C: Talks

  • Listen to talks from a tour guide, professor, or coach, then answer related questions.
  • Everglades tour: Crocodiles have tears to expel salt, not due to sadness, and the expression "crocodile tears" means false sadness.
  • Clipper ship lecture: Fast, multi-sailed ships from the 19th century, first used for tea trade, later for gold rush transport, and assignment due Friday.
  • Drama coach: Stage fright is normal, affects all performers, can be managed through relaxation and positive focus.
