Crafting Engaging Narratives: A Guide

hello and welcome back to another touring teacher lesson video today we're going to be doing some more writing and you have come along to part one on how to write a narrative now part one is all about what actually is a narrative and we're going to go through what are the types of things that you would include in your narrative to make it the best one yet let's get started what is a narrative a narrative is a story the goal is to write something that will engage and entertain your readers the narrative story can be about something real or something made up a narrative follows a character a narrative is a story that goes in order there is always something that goes wrong then needs to be resolved okay so now that we know what goes in a narrative or what are the different types of things we need to be thinking of i've got an example that i wrote for you guys just a short narrative or a short story and then we're going to have a look at what are the different language features and other little bits that we included it was not just a normal day today was athletics day and i was ready to win the 100 meter sprint last year the new kid came along and she bet me to the finish line this year i have been training so hard this is my year i arrived at school and everyone was buzzing all the students were kitted out in their house colours my yellow t-shirt was going to help me win the gold as the day went on all the events had come and gone long jump high jump shot put when they called the year 4 girls 100 meter sprint i could feel my stomach in my throat my legs felt like jelly i must have looked as white as a ghost the principal had the wooden clapper she gave me a wink as i came up to my lane this was it you can do it i whispered to myself on your marks get set before i knew it my legs had started to move i knew what had happened instantly i had gone before the clapper in the olympics people get disqualified for false starts i could see my hopes and dreams floating away luckily for me it wasn't the olympics so the principal told me to get back in line to try again this time i waited for the clapper this time my legs felt like they were flying this time i won the race okay so that was my example of an athletics day and of a girl that really wanted to win the gold medal so it was a whole story and it was following a character so those are just some of the things that i included before let's take a closer look i have highlighted and color coded all the different things we need to include and i've color-coded them to the story so you can see which one i'm talking about so really important when we are writing a narrative we need to include who what when where why and how so let's see which ones are included in my writing so for the who you can see i included words like i me my so i was talking about myself the what is that it was not just a normal day the when i talked about last year and also this been my year the where i'm talking about that i arrived at school the why it's athletics day and the how i was talking about my feelings so i was talking about how i could feel my stomach and my throat that my legs felt like jelly and i must have looked as white as a ghost now the other really important part in a narrative is that something needs to go wrong and this sometimes is called the climax of the story or the problem and then there's always a resolution so as you can see in my story the part that goes wrong is that my legs moved before the clapper went and it was a false start okay so that was the problem there was a false start but now there needs to be a resolution or a way that the problem is fixed because no one wants to hear a story where there's something that goes wrong and that's the end so we need to be able to fix it so my resolution is that luckily for me i wasn't in the olympics so the principal told me to get back in line to try again so i thought that was a pretty good resolution because that's something that would happen in normal life now there's two more things that i've put up on our highlighted list of things to include so let's have a look if we can spot them in the writing so one of the things that i put on the list of what we need to include is that we need to include details because details expand our sentences and give that extra information to the story so let's see what i included so the details i included were all the students were kitted out in their house colors and my yellow t-shirt was going to help me win the gold so rather than just saying my yellow t-shirt was going to help me when i was talking about how everyone was kitted out in their house colors so it paints more of a picture and the last thing that i made sure to include in my narrative is that they were interesting sentence starters when you're reading a book it never starts with the same thing i did this i did that me me me because i think as a reader you would get bored so when we're writing we need to make sure we have interesting and different sentence starters so let's have a look at mine alright so you can see my first part i wrote it was not just a normal day another sentence starter was i arrived at school my favorite sentence started was as the day went on and then the principal had the wooden clapper so as you can see those were four different examples of ways i started my sentences or started my paragraphs there's so many ways that we could write different sentences to just engage our readers a little bit more okay so that was part one on how to write a narrative and this was all the parts on what actually is a narrative now remember you can click on part two which is all about how to plan for a narrative or you can always click subscribe and you can get notifications on when the other videos are coming out and you can always have a look at what other writing videos i have for you guys i'll see you in part two
