so greetings my name is Dr Jacqueline Nukem I use the she her pronouns series and I am the director of the Harvard pre-ol program I am so pleased to welcome you to the Harvard summer school Harvard College was founded in 1636 and the Harvard summer school in 1871 however this is the 10th Summer of the Harvard pre-ol program when I designed and created this pre-ol program I wanted to offer High School uh High achieving students in high school the opportunity to discover new ideas and perspectives while thinking critically I wanted students from around the world to ask important questions and to debate concepts with instructors and peers in choosing courses for our program I look for those that mirror the liberal arts our curriculum at Harvard and focus on learning for learning sake I also want to ensure that we are developing the whole student offering opportunities to learn both inside and outside of the classroom during this orientation we will spend some time reviewing what a typical day will look like for our students discuss expectations for your academic courses and co-curricular events review support available to you as a student and introduce some of our pre-ol program staff there will be a question and answer section at the end of the presentation feel free to write down any questions you may have and see if they're answered throughout the presentation then please submit any unanswered questions in the Q&A section on your screen Miss Lucy will compile the questions and try to answer as many as possible during this session we will provide a contact email at the end of the presentation in case we don't get to answer every question we are recording this session and we will email it to students within the next week now I would like to have the pre-ol program staff introduce themselves to you starting with Miss Caroline Lucy hello my name is Caroline Lucy and I'm the high school programs coordinator of the Harvard summer school hello everybody my name is Samantha Gordon I use is she her her pronouns and I am the assistant director for the pre-ol program in the Harvard summer school and our next slide uh we're going to briefly introduce you as well to our uh our resident Dean staff so each year we hire graduate level and new professional interns to serve as resident Deans or RDS they are either currently in graduate school or recently graduated from a graduate program these RDS Live in the houses and provide supervision to the undergraduate Proctors who are also known as raas at other institutions you'll hear from each of the RDS later in this presentation we also hire three graduate level or new professional interns who serve as our activities coordinators and these coordinators report up to our program coordinator Jordan Williams they manage all activities associated with the passpor program which we will hear about later in this session you also will get to meet them later as well so we're now going to launch a poll and ask that you answer the question where do you call home and as you're answering this you can see a map on the screen uh we have students attending our program from 44 States and territories in 80 different countries there are approximately 600 students in each preol session this summer and nearly 40 students are attending more than one session if you are one of these students you will remain on campus on Friday and Saturday night in between sessions and we will be taking you on some fun trips on that Saturday now we should be closing the poll and it looks like we have an abundance of folks from North America right now because as you may not know it is 1: or 2: a.m. across Europe uh as well as in other parts of the world it might be early mornings they might not be present with us right now but they are coming to our program uh and it looks like we have some small amounts from Asia Europe South America and Australia thank you to the Australia it's probably around uh uh 11: a or so so thank you all for joining us and it's really great to see how many folks are present now Miss Lucy will talk about a typical day course and student expectations hello everyone so thank you so much Miss Gordon so what does a typical day look like students you will attend your courses for three hours a day Monday through Friday and additionally expect two to four hours of homework each day including the weekends so missing class Andor being late will lead to a final grade of requirements not met so make sure you make it to class on time prepared alert and ready to engage please note there are no classes on Thursday July 4th in observance of Independence Day the activities coordinators will be offering events on the day off and those are required so we'll send more information about that them um in each 3-hour class you can expect a combinations of lectures small and large group discussions and student presentations so let's say a physics math or computer science course they could include a problem set for homework that needs to be worked on over several days whereas if you're taking a government philosophy speech or writing course your project may include several drafts or sections um written over the course of two weeks readings come from scholarly peer reviewed journals textbooks and in some cases even recent news articles and this summer we're offering over 50 co-curricular and social events during each two week session you will have access to the virtual emissions panels and there talks offered in all those talks are offered in all three pre-ol sessions and Miss Gordon will speak much more about this moving forward thank you Miss Lucy we're gonna open another poll now so we've just launched that course poll and I'd like to ask you to please choose under which academic discipline your course will fall this summer so will it be under speech writing and literature psychology medicine and Public Health law politics philosophy and literature business and Leadership race gender and ethics or science technology engineering art and math otherwise known as Steam now I'm going to explain a little bit about the academic expectations we have to ensure that your time with us will be as rewarding and smooth as possible please know that understanding and abiding by expectations in the pre-ol program will help you get the very most out this amazing opportunity we're about to close that poll so if you could just uh please finish answering now and I just thought I'd share what our two most popular courses this summer were the two that weight listed first with no surprise to me was Innovation inventions and markets as well as mathematical elements of artificial intelligence no surprise with the rise of AI technology all right we're going to close the poll now and as you can see we have uh students taking all of the different courses that we offer um with the most in stem sessions which is not surprising because I offer probably the most courses in stem um and Then followed closely by law politics philosophy history psych medicine and public health all right so remember that you are enrolled in college level courses they can be quite difficult and they require a good deal of reading and study outside of class the pre-ol program covers nearly a semester of material in just two weeks so here are some best practices that I'll ask that you you follow in this program first is arrive on time make sure you leave enough time to walk to your course some of our courses are all the way across campus so it could be your course could be two-minute walk or it could be a 20 minute walk we do have a shuttle near our houses that runs throughout the day but sometimes it's actually faster to walk than take the shuttle which does the whole campus Loop if you miss more than 15 minutes of any class you will not pass so please plan ahead do not schedule any other courses or activities during your session be prepared expect two to four hours of homework each day as Miss Lucy mentioned and ask for help if you need it meet with a tutor go to office hours or attend a study session to work with your peers read your syllabus carefully and manage your time and all of your responsibilities you'll have access to your course materials using canvas and logging in with your Harvard key complete all your assignments ask questions if they're not clear about the expectations of the class and don't approach learning as someone else's responsibility to teach you attend every class every day in its in and in its entirety ensure that your travel plans allow you to attend every course even the final class we do have classes on the final Friday of every session if you have a travel conflict email us immediately so you can meet with me before your session begins and we can try to come up with some possible opportunities and other courses that might meet your needs stay the course find your voice you may be used to being the big fish in the small pond but now you're a little fish in a big pond engage with your peers and be open to learning from each other you are a diverse group you're from different states countries racial ethnic religious socioeconomic backgrounds gender identity sexual orientation political affiliation you name it there is a lot of difference but there's one thing that really keep keeps you engaged is that you are all incredibly bright and very passionate about learning and that is why I believe you all belong here with us at Harvard this summer your peers and your instructors hope to learn from you as well so students be willing to share in your classes and outside of your classes maintain academic Integrity instructors will have information in their syllabi about academic Integrity read this thoroughly before creating your assignments some instructors may explain their exact academic policies if students have questions about citations AI usage Etc please go directly to your instructors and ask them there are tutors and Tas available for your assistance the pre-ol program offers tutoring and Miss Lucy will explain that in a little bit some instructors also have teaching assistance they can provide help throughout uh through their additional office hours or you can contact them for um support the pre-ol program focuses on learning for learning sake we do not use letter grades rather you'll get an AR if you meet all requirements or an NM if you do not you don't get a number grade or a letter grade in this program you can request an official Harvard transcript that lists your non-credit grade plus you'll receive a written evaluation from your instructor please note your written evaluation from your instructor will include the things you did well and any areas of improvement this evaluation can be used as supplemental material in your college application but it is not a letter of recommendation please remember that colleges are really looking for letters of recommendation from people who've had a longstanding relationship with you and not an instructor you've only known for two weeks so please do not ask your instructors for recommendations as part of your application we asked you how to define academic integrity and how it impacts your education here at Harvard we take academic Integrity very seriously students should present only their own work and be sure to cite or give credit to material that is not original this includes not reusing assignments or collaborating inappropriately with others our AI policy it's important to emphasize that the new machine learning and AI Technologies like chat GPT are emerging and they might be tempting for you to use to help write or do other assignments we want to therefore remind all students that our academic Integrity policy forbid students to represent work as their own that they did not write code or create submissions of computer generated text without attribution is also prohibited by chat gpt's own terms of service at the beginning of each session you'll receive an email with more information about academic integrity and student Support Services be aware of all the resources available to you as a Harvard student your Rd and Proctor can help you understand those resources for example you have free access to Harvard libraries all their online materials and Harvard students who serve as tutors during your session I'm going to turn things over to Miss Lucy now who will talk more about these opportunities for you okay thank you Miss uh Dr Nukem so we offer pre-ol tutoring where you can work in a group or oneon-one with a current Harvard College student who has experienced in a wide variety of coursework study sessions are also held each week by pre-ol tutors and and Proctors in the dunster dining hall so please use the tutor request form if you need any AC mic support as you can see you can use that QR code right on the side there and you should be able to see the form so the QR code on this slide can be used during the session to request a tutor and then so pre-ol tutors we offer open study hours for the following days Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. so in this room it's really a great way to to come in it's an open study session and students can mingle with their other peers get some help or just you know do their own study time we also have the Writing Center that's also a great source a resource for students to access during their time finally as Dr Nukem mentioned we have teaching assistants they can often hold extra extra study hours or extra study sessions or the instructor May hold office hours as well my biggest thing is don't be afraid to ask for help our courses are intense and Dr Nukem has really stressed that so if you fall behind on the first couple of days you may not be able to catch up so if you really need help with anything we are here to help and I personally see it as a sign of strength when students ask for assistance it's definitely not a weakness the best students take advantage of the available resources even when they don't need help there may be a concept or a question that another student ask that you might have not been thinking of thanks Miss Lucy as a student in our program we expect and encourage you to meet the following student expectations come prepared please check your email for important announcements and reminders be sure that the email address that we're using is updated in our system log into the my dce portal and check what we have on file if the email address is not the students email that they will have access to on campus it should be changed before they arrive we want you to build community attend required and optional events and get to know other students from around the world we want you to practice good self-care ensure that you're getting adequate sleep eat before your three-hour class and stay hydrated will even give you a water bottle when you arrive if you have classes that start at noon you may request a bagged lunch to pick up at anenberg dining hall you make that request the night before at dinner you fill out a form and you can pick it up at either breakfast or lunch the next day and we ask that you follow our policies we've sent you links to the Harvard summer school student handbook guidelines and key policies for our program please review and abide by them in order to promote well the well-being of students and to provide a safe and peaceful environment for learning social activities and personal growth there are additional policies that apply to all pre-ol students we've add a link to the additional rules for pre-ol students into the chat pre-ol students have an 11:00 p.m. curfew every day and are required to check in with their Proctors each night students May attend nonh Harvard sponsored events off-campus concerts performers or large uh sporting events but they must receive written permission from the program administration at least 24 hours in advance and return by curfew we we are limiting guests in the houses to other secondary school program students at Harvard summer school and other pre-ol students it's important that you speak to your roommate prior to inviting any students into your room of course we do not allow students to use or be in the presence of alcohol or other drugs this includes tobacco products and vaping pre-ol students may not smoke or vape during the program your study should occup the greater part of your time and very best efforts but some of the best rewards in college come from participation and co-curricular activities that take place outside of the classroom so be sure to engage with your peers and Proctors by attending events take care of the other members of our pre-ol community by doing the smart thing if you see or hear of another student engaging in Risky unsafe or inappropriate behavior dissuade them speak up and tell your Proctor or your Rd students will be held accountable if found to behave in a way that is disruptive to our community such as being in the presence of or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs harassing others or violating academic Integrity please note students placed on the Harvard University administrative board disciplinary probation or required to withdraw from the Harvard summer school must disclose this on their college applications in accordance with our policy and the family educational rights and Privacy Act of 1974 otherwise known as furpa we cannot release information such as students academic evaluations or class schedule to family members or Guardians we communicate directly with students not with parents guardians or any other third parties families this is an opportunity for your student to gain indep attendant and take responsibility for their own learning and behaviors so please allow them to do so now miss Gordon will speak to you all about our incredible co-curricular program hello everybody and thank you for all your wonderful questions that are coming in um I'm excited to now answer many of them which are about our extracurriculars or what we call our pre-ol passport program so the pre-ol co-curricular events they provide you the opportunity to challenge yourself academically and socially outside of the classroom it's an opportunity to hear about exciting research happening in various Fields learn about critical skills necessary for college transition success and develop that Community amongst your peers in a stress-free and engaging way in the Harvard pre-ol program you have the opportunity to choose from dozens of co-curricular activities to participate in each week I think we have around 86 events for session one alone these opport unities help ensure that you have a well-rounded experience it is your responsibility to successfully attend and engage into of the following topics which you can see on the screen academic exploration college readiness social and residential and trips in Recreation and attending other social events are optional but encouraged um and lastly we also have virtual admission series which we would talk about next well now that you know a little bit about our passport program we would love to know which category of programs you are most excited about so a poll has just been launched and the question is which passport category are you most excited to attend and again the options are academic exploration college readiness social and residential and trips and Recreation now as we move on to the next slide I'll talk briefly as you fill at this poll about our virtual admissions events so we offer these uh Vision events such as online panel presentations some by Harvard staff and others in cooperation with Selective universities this year we have our hosting panels with schools such as UC Berkeley brandise Princeton Dartmouth and many more you're welcome to attend any of these events regardless of what session you're attending and I'll repeat that you can attend any event at any time regardless of your session these are all virtual and we'll be talking about how to register for them in just a few slides so now the poll has closed and as I expected trips and Recreation uh has has won out 47% followed closely by academic exploration and then a tie between college for needs and social and residential I have to say our activity staff have done an exceptional job and I think you will enjoy all of your programs this summer so we are now going to talk a bit about registering for these events which again I've seen many questions come in so like we mentioned you have the freedom to choose the events you attend but you also have the respons ability to challenge Yourself by learning these new skills and engaging with new ideas we hope that each opportunity is a rich and rewarding one for you so as you can see by the dates on the slide you'll be getting an email which session one you should have gotten that email today 10 days prior to the start of your session with directions on how to register for the programs those of you like I just said in session one should have gotten it earlier than today and if not you will receive many reminders the event registration is first come first sered so please fill out as soon as possible I highly recommend you put these dates on your calendar and look out for an email uh for session two on Wednesday June 26th and session three on July 10th uh make sure that none of your uh events overlap with your course or any academic field trips and you will see that in your syllabus now our sign up directions we have a video here uh you will be uh going to your my dce profile and you will see that you're assigned a task so the pre-ol passport program registration and as you can see the tasks will load and you will see the directions and they tell you exactly what you need to do and then at the bottom you will hit register now and the screen will pop up and there'll be many choices for you to fill out for which all the different topic areas that we have so academic exploration now we have college readiness next we have our social residential there are more than just one or two don't this was filmed just so you all can see some trips and if you have a trip that includes a meal it will let you know so for instance I wanted a meal so I have no dietary preferences then our Sunday trip and then last you have the option to attend a Red Sox game and I obviously had to sign up for that I love going to Fenway and then once this screen loads you will see in just a moment you will have a list of all the events that you have registered for to view it one last time before you fully click finish and it's just that simple and this is something we will be sending out to you all um so thank you to the many folks who have filled this out today so on our next slide uh I wanted to also show that you can view what events you have registered for in your my dce account so you'll go to down to where it says my events and click on it and then it'll open up to this page that you see now and then what I did is I filtered on the far left where it says my events and I clicked the button and these are the events that I registered for and if I scroll down you can see all of them I signed up for uh seven different events and my eighth event will be having a proctor program uh in my first few days if you have any concerns or you have any um uh issues with your events please email us at pre-ol summer. harvard.edu and our activity staff and I will'll make sure that we get back to you and figure out how we can manage the various uh issues that you may be facing and then many folks are asking when can they register for additional events and first of all just want to always remind you to please prioritize your academics however if you're finding that you have the time and uh the ability to register for additional events you may do so on the Monday morning of your session that first Monday you will get an email very similar to the F your 10 days out when we email you initially saying that you can now register for events so instead of going to that uh that form that that task that you just saw you'll actually go directly to your my events um component on your mydc account and you actually can click on each of these individually in these events uh and immediately register it'll be very very simple and again if you have any questions you can always visit the activities office in person or you can email us at pre-ol at summer. harvard.edu so this summer we are lucky to be living in two Harvard undergraduate houses dunster house and Leverett house which it's a screenshot of our admitted pre-ol students page we want to remind you that you can find lots of useful information on the website for admitted students and you can also see on the left side of the page there looks very small to me but hopefully might be a little bit bigger for you is a link to our arrival guide which I'm seeing many questions about so on the next slide uh I will talk briefly about this oh it's our already up there all right this guide includes important details about preparing for your arrival as you can see each section is a drop-down with additional information for example under the section get ready to live on campus you will find a list of Furnishings that will be in your room as well as a suggested packing lists all right again I have seen this question many many a time so I hope this answers those questions approximately one week prior to the start of your session you will receive an email stating that you're H ticket is available to be viewed in my dce you will find this on the left side of your screen uh in my dce we be sure to review it before arrival the H ticket will include your oncampus room assignment and other details so that means you will not know that until 10 until one week prior to the start of your session please check your age ticket to confirm that you are compliant with immunizations that is of the utmost importance you will also be asked to scan the QR code on this H ticket during check-in please be sure that you have it available either on your phone a screenshot or you are welcome to bring a print out and you also need to bring photo identification such as a government issued ID or passport so that we can give you your Harvard ID so now I want to tell you a little bit more about what to expect when you arrive on campus if you are driving to campus free parking is available at the 52 Oxford Street Garage and a shuttle will run to our houses from noon to 4m and again this is all on our arrival section of our website only students will be able to enter the houses parents will be able to help their students with their luggage and stand by it during check-in in the courtyard please pack lightly as students you'll be carrying your own bags to your room and you are here for only two weeks you can always do your laundry in the houses during the program you will have access to them per Harvard school summer school per Harvard summer school policy you are required to wait for the arrival of your roommate or roommates if you have them before choosing a bed this provides an early opportunity for you and your roommate or roommates to establish a pattern of working together constructively you and your roommate or roommates should seek guidance from your Proctor if you ever need help resolving any dispute of any kind following check-in you will meet with your Proctor and other students for introductions in in team building and next you will attend orientation in the beautiful Sanders the after orientation you will go on a tour of important campus locations including your classroom building and so you will also be with your class members so you can even plan to meet up before class and walk over together and after your tour you'll have dinner in annenburg dining hall at 8:00 pm you will have your first floor meeting with your Proctor and don't forget to check in with your Proctor at curfew at 11: p.m. now Dr Nukem is going to share a few more reminders thank you Miss Gordon I now want to talk about a few things that students need to complete before they arrive to campus first we've already mentioned that you need to claim your Harvard key you should have received an email within a couple of days of your registration so if you can't find it look back around the time of your registration in your email and it will have your Harvard ID number in there you'll use that to register for your Harvard key so that you can access all of the resources we we talked about today that happen to be electronic resources review your course syllabus in canvas there are only about five or six syllabi that I'm still waiting on that I've sent some revisions for out of over a hundred courses so you should be able to see your C your syllabus in canvas if you cannot send us an email so that we can make sure there's no error on our end um in the system check it out take a moment to look it over read all the policy and look at the calendar to see when assignments are due so that this information can help you select which passport activities you want to do so you don't conflict with a major assignment deadline or a class field trip or extra Study Hour submit your photo for your Harvard University ID we'll hand it to you all printed when you arrive on campus so if you uh submit your photo and Advance it saves a lot of time and makes your life a lot easier please please ensure your immunizations are submitted this is extraordinarily important our University Health Services will not let you live on campus unless you meet all the requirements or exemptions log into your patient portal to review your status although you may have submitted everything it may not meet Massachusetts state requirements such as needing a pacle menitis vaccine at or after the age of 16 that is the one that trips on almost everyone up so make sure that you check the portal even if you've submitted everything to the best of your ability to see if everything was cleared on the university health services end if you don't meet your immunization requirements or exemptions you students you may need to get a vaccination on campus when you arrive we'd rather you spend your time enjoying your course and doing your co-curricular events than waiting in line at University Health Services for a booster all right if you have any questions about your immunization please contact the Harvard University Health Services directly as due to Hippa rules we do not have access to your medical records again miss Gordon's already talked about registering for your passport events make sure you do this in my dce you'll be able to register about a week and a half or 10 days before your arrival register for your virtual College admission series again you can attend any of the virtual College admission series at any time over the six weeks of our summer session so if there's a college that's coming um that'll be online virtually that you're very interested in it's in session one and you're attending session three you can still go so sign up for those under my dce uh they'll be available within the next few days for you to be able to do that and if there are additional events uh that you would like to attend and they're available to you you'll be able to re register for them in my dce on the first day of your class we'll send you a reminder once you arrive on campus all right here's some general reminders so if you could go to the next slide oh it's all on the slide sorry about that um respect your instructors your staff your peers and our community this includes respecting quiet and courtesy hours and our curfew and remember to clean up after your yourself you're going to be living in undergraduate University Housing uh these are houses that Harvard college students live in in the Academic Year some of them have Academic Year tutors and their families living in so we ask you to be respectful respectful of our community remember you are guests in Harvard College student at homes so please uh you know do things like take out your trash bring it to the basement to the trash room and clean up after yourself and just generally respect the property remember that time management is Paramount in this program students don't overbook yourself I've already mentioned this but this program will take up all of your time so you know trying to do other courses or hold a job or attend other obligations really is very very hard to manage during this program you'll be fully immersed in this residential experience so don't double book yourself remember you must attend every class in its entirety complete all assignments to pass missing just 15 minutes of class over the two weeks can easily result in a Grade of requirements not met if you anticipate any conflicts with attending all of your classes be sure to schedule an appointment with me by emailing preol summer. harvard.edu and we can set that up before you arrive it's much easier to have that conversation now than when you're trying to do your courses and you have arrived and it's too too late to make any other arrangements remember to challenge yourself meet and learn from others who are different from you and be open to new ideas we'll talk more about this when you arrive on campus but stay hydrated and eat meals several students are asking in the in the Q&A how do I book my bag lunches you do that we'll go over all of that at student orientation on the day of your arrival um and you can always ask your Proctor when you get here but it's really easy there's a paper form you just fill it out and hand it to the person who checks IDs at the front of the dining hall we're eating an anenberg Hall which you can see in this picture your if your class meets at noon you can order that bag lunch the day before and you can ask to have it picked up at either breakfast or lunch and there is no additional cost that's part of your program fee remember to have a really good etiquette in both your classroom and any of your events remember to bring your laptop with the camera and headphones so that you can attend any events that might be happening um on zoom and mute yourself when you're not speaking and be sure to keep your camera on be on time for class and any events what that are in person and online and remember to be curious and openminded learn a lot and really have fun for families here's a few reminders for you due to the shortage uh and I mean due to the short duration of this program sorry about that uh we don't allow students to receive any mail or packages if it's an emergency please contact our office and we'll see if we can make arrangements but typically we do not you know by the time the mail gets delivered to your student they've already gone home and we have to redirect it back to you we ask that you are careful with your keys and your Harvard ID you will need to carry both of these at all time your door locks as soon as you walk out of it it locks behind you so be really thoughtful about about using the lanyard we're going to give you so you don't get locked out if you're just down the hall you talking to a friend or using a restroom students during student orientation will go more in detail about these topics and also how to get online with the Harvard Wireless through get online. harvard.edu you can't do that until you arrive on campus families please allow your student to be autonomous and navigate this experience on their own remember our departmental policy is that we can't speak to you without your students permission please be patient your student will be very busy and may not return your call or your text message immediately in fact most of the time they requireed to not have their phone on um during events or courses remember they could also be a little homesick and in those cases again I ask for your patience often not calling the first couple of days is better so they just get acclimated and used to campus life students I implore you please contact your families let them know you're doing okay work with your family to create a communication flam students tend to get quite busy during the program as explained previously and they're taking three hours of class with an additional two to four hours of homework and they're also learning how to balance their passport activities and meals and hanging out for friends often times times when parents call us worried or Guardians call us or you know siblings worried about they haven't talked to their student in two days their students phone is you know forgot to be charged they were taking a nap they're usually perfectly fine just really enjoying their opportunity to be on campus and be independent so come up with a communication plan that works for your family and also be patient both of uh both the students and the the families again if your student doesn't answer you as frequently as usual they really are just trying to balance and have a good uh priority schedule so we've been compiling all of your questions so now we're really going to try to answer some of them we've already answered 273 questions in the Q&A which is pretty remarkable so thank you to everyone on the back end who's been answering questions I see we have another 138 questions many of them are repeat questions so you may want to look back in the Q&A to see if the question you have has already been answered um but right now we're going to do some live Q&A we've taken a few that uh we found to be questions that we've received over and over again and we thought we'd try to answer some of those live so uh Miss Caroline Lucy if you could uh read some questions for Miss Gordon and I we'll we'll do our best to answer them and in the short time we have left perfect thank you so much okay so for our first question this is to miss Gordon will we have access to the recordings of activities that we cannot register for due to class time or conflict well in theory that would be great we do not record our activities um and so you will not have the ability to register or to attend those events or get any of the materials great thanks and another one again for Miss Gordon all these passport questions um is there a list uh of offered passport programs that were able to access before registration yes that is a great question so when you log on to my dce you will scroll down the page and you will see an area that says my events click on it the my events and there's a little arrow that takes you to another page then on that page you will literally see all of the 86 events we have open so again on my dce click on my events and then you'll be able to see them all so feel free to peruse and browse those those of you in session one session two and three your events will not be available until 10 days before uh your session and so once you've viewed them you can then go and complete that form and let us know what activities you're interested in okay thank you so this is for Dr Nuka what if you're are sick for one one of our classes and who should we communicate with always talk to your Proctor or the Proctor on call as Miss Gordon may have explained we have two Proctors on call in each of the houses that will be living in this summer and then we have two resident Deans on call and then myself or Miss Gordon is always on call this summer so there's a good good backup plan we do students have access to university health services for Urgent Care we also have a 24-hour nurse hotline and a 24-hour mental health support line so if you're feeling you know overwhelmed and anxious and you don't think you're going to get to class that's a great opportunity to call that 24-hour uh mental health hotline they might be able to talk to you so that by the time it is your class you're feeling well enough to get there if you are um physically ill and you're feeling really sick and you think you need to talk to someone uh we do have the 24-hour nurse line we ask you to call ahead you can make an appointment with University Health Services but let the Proctor on call know so that we can be in touch with your instructor and I will work with you and your instructor to make sure that you can you know get what you've missed we don't want you to miss any class because we're covering nearly 16 weeks of work in two weeks you're going to do about 304 hours and a seven week um summer course which is worth four credits at Harvard is 36 course hours so as you can imagine you're doing nearly the same amount of work as someone in a credit class missing just one day is like missing a week in the Academic Year so we just ask you to please work with us talk to the en call staff and communicate directly with me and your instructor great and this other question is also for Dr Nukem so what do I do if I need to miss part of my class for travel oh you should be emailing us miss Gordon or I um or Miss Lucy will talk with you before you arrive we'll figure out if there's an alternative flight you can take um we'll come up with some emergency plan planning and sometimes it's just easier to switch you into a class that finishes earlier um we'll see what we can do but it's really important communication is key we may not be able to do anything but at least we'll know before you arrive what your options are yes thank you so much Dr Nukem now this one's for Miss Gordon we've been getting a lot of questions about this how long do activities last everyone wants to know I think it's a great question it really is making me think that you all are very good at time management so I would say um for for academic exploration and college readiness they are all 90 minutes so you will need a full 90 minutes and you will want 15 minute buffers on each side because some of them might be virtual but many of them are in person and so you might have to walk from one location to another um and then the social events will happen Friday Saturday and Sunday nights and they're usually around two hours and then our trips are varied on the weekend okay thank you so much and then this one I can answer it's can students leave campus freely so I'm going to S talk a little bit about and then Dr Nukem or Miss Gordon will chime in if they have anything else to add so as students you can leave in the Boston or Cambridge area during the day not pass curfew anywhere you would like if you're going outside of that area you need to let your Proctor know at least 48 hours advance and also you need to let us know we need to we do this for your safety and it's to help everyone involved um any else anything else to add or we all set with the next question I think I just want to remind parents that your students are going to be very very busy in this program if I haven't stressed that enough I'd like to let you hear it again um dropping by unannounced is really difficult for students it might make them uncomfortable because they may have already had plans um students are not allowed to leave the program overnight or have overnight guests so we'd like you to really give your student the opportunity to just experience this twoe program in its entirety um so I'd ask that you you really are thoughtful about your plans if a student does want to visit a relative or you know go off campus for dinner with someone or you want to just take them out for dinner one night that's perfectly fine as long as they're back by curfew if you're leaving the Cambridge and Boston area we'll ask you to email permission for your student to do that uh within 48 48 Hours beforehand great um so another question is um if I arrive late what should I do and Dr Nukem do you want to take this question actually I would love you to answer this organizes our late arrival so sorry I want to say my breath clearly so as um so for late arrival students please email us at precol um summer. harvard.edu because I will help you with your specific situation and then afterwards I will send you specific information about this please email us as soon as possible because we want to be able to help you and we'll be there for you and I'll provide more specific information um yes and if something happens during your travel you know your flight's delayed don't fear we have staff on Call 24 hours a day even if you arrive late we still accommodate you um our phone number for the Emergency staff will be posted on the door of the building when you get your age ticket with Miss Gordon showed you um in my dce it's usually available about a week before your arrival then you'll be able to see the street address and everything else so you know even unexpected uh depart uh delays we can make sure you're you get checked in right um and then also this is a question from Miss Gordon where do I sign up for more co-curriculars and what if I miss the deadline yeah that's a great question I'm going to also add a few other random facts uh and fun tidbits to this so uh if you uh miss the deadline um well uh you will um want you will be notified during check-in there will be a sticker on or a Post-It on your key packet and on your on your checkin information that says please visit the AC's the activities coordinators they will be at a table during check-in and you will go to them and they will register you for those events right then and there however it is a first come first serve uh registration uh situation so please please make sure that you register within the time frame that we give you uh if you want to sign up for the more co-curriculars we won't open those until the first Monday um of your session now I know some folks have been asking about the fact that they only signed up for one soci social activity great observation and that is exactly what you supposed to do because your second social activity will be something that your Proctor will will plan for you so until you arrive they don't know what you want to see so they're going to talk to you figure out if you want to do a PowerPoint night have some ice cream and pizza go do a paint night uh and so that will be your eighth activity now for those of you in session one we will also be making July 4th activities available it is required that you attend one of our events now you can go on to my dce currently and register however your Proctor will help you register on check-in day for those events all right well our hour has flown by so I would like to uh thank you all for spending some time with us on behalf of all of us in the Harvard summer school I'd like to once again congratulate you on your acceptance to the Harvard pre-college program our admissions was extraordinarily selective this year and I really look forward to seeing you this summer on campus I wish you all the best with your course and your program thank you again
