Sternum Anatomy

Introduction

  • Sternum: Bone in the center of the chest, sword-shaped.
  • Purpose: This tutorial covers the anatomy of the sternum.

Overview of the Sternum

  • Structure: Long flat bone in the front of the rib cage.
  • Parts: Made up of three parts:
    • Manubrium
    • Sternal body
    • Xiphoid process
  • Function: Joins right and left ribs, provides base for the pectoral girdle.

Parts of the Sternum

Manubrium

  • Location: Most superior portion of the sternum.
  • Shape: Triangle-like, base in line with clavicles.
  • Notches:

    • Clavicular notches: On either side of the suprasternal notch; contribute to sternoclavicular joints.

Sternal Body

  • Features: Contains multiple costal notches for rib attachment.
    • Notches named after rib numbers (third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh costal notches).

Xiphoid Process

  • Note: Covered at a basic level, part of the sternum.

Articulations

  • Sternal Angle: Junction between manubrium and sternal body.
  • Xiphysternal Junction: Junction between sternal body and xiphoid process.
