Key Events in Early Islamic Leadership

He refused. He said, I want to be from the general mass. I want to be with the people.

Let's elect somebody. He said, no, it's you. No one else is befitting except you.

Ali ibn Abi Talib, when they went on and on and on... they continuously told him told him refused he said if that's the case my Bay ah will not be hidden you won't be behind closed doors and to be publicly let's go to the mystery They were scared for Ali ibn Abi Talib. Ali went and he done his bay'ah jahra. He done an al-alan in the open. And the people came and they done bay'ah with him.

The people that done bay'ah with Ali ibn Abi Talib, brothers, I'm doing the story fast, is Talha ibn Ubaidillah, Zubayr ibn Awwam. They done bay'ah. I know they went to the ma'raqah, to Jamal.

They were in it. But they gave bay'ah to Ali ibn Abi Talib. And Usta.

so? Talha ibn Ubaidillah. When they gave Bay'ah, Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair ibn Awam took permission from Ali ibn Abi Talib because he was their amir and they considered him as an amir.

For what? If they could go to what? Mecca and do Umrah.

When they went Mecca, Zubair ibn Awam Talha ibn Ubaidillah, they met in Mecca. Aisha radiallahu ta'ala anha. Who was Aisha?

The wife of the messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When they met Aisha, they discussed the killing of Uthman and how he was killed. And Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair ibn Awwam and Aisha were very sad about what took place regarding who?

Uthman. Remember when Uthman had the Imara and he was the leader What he did was, he made governors in different lands of the Muslims The people are still in position that were the governors and had the wilayat From them was who? Who was the governor of Sham?

Was who? Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan radiallahu ta'ala anhu. Muawiyah was in Sham. And when Uthman got killed, Uthman's wife, who was trying to stop the Thuar, the Khawarij who wanted to kill him, she put her hand out, they chopped her fingers. Her fingers, some of it got chopped.

And so what she did was, she took her fingers, and she took the clothes that Uthman was wearing, and she sent it to Muawiyah. Muawiyah saw this and him and Uthman were cousins. He saw it, his Hamasah went very high. He is the blood of his brother, his cousin and his wife.

But Muawiyah took it and he hung it in the masjid. And he said to the people, I request the people who killed Uthman. Ali ibn Abi Talib Because the city of Medina he took over and the things, the facade that took place, the Uthman just got killed and he has to organize things. So Muawiyah sent to him, told him, I need you to find for me the people who killed Uthman. Remember this brothers, I need this to be clear.

Muawiyah never ever disputed the Khilafah of Ali. He never was against it. He didn't give Bay'ah. He refused to give Bay'ah.

But he didn't refuse to give Bay'ah Muawiyah. Because he was seeing himself to be more befitting to take the Khilafah. No, that wasn't the reason.

And forget what the Mustashriqeen and other people who say about Mu'awiyah, what they say. Mu'awiyah's reason was one. He wanted the ones who killed his cousin, Uthman, he wanted their blood.

He just wanted the people. Pinpoint them for me, send them to me, and I will deal with them. Because he was reciting the ayah, Anyone who is killed The people who are his family His wali They are entitled to ask for it So Uthman Muawi was like This is my cousin I am the one who requests for the blood Ali said this time is a facade That what's happening is a lot The moshkilah that's taking place is big Wait Let's organize everything And then I will what? We will get the people.

Because right now, if we take them, they're going to cause a fight. And a lot of problems going to happen. But Ali and Muawiyah both were going to bring the people.

They wanted the people to be judged. But it was the timing. Muawiyah wanted it now, Ali wanted it later. That's the khilaf. Nothing more, nothing less.

Don't try to look for something else amongst the companions. At this point, Ali ibn Abi Talib is discussing with Muawiyah Talha ibn Ubaidillah Zubair ibn Awwamin and Aisha they went towards the place Kufa where the people who killed Uthman had initially come from and they took an army they went there remember as I said Talha ibn Ubaidillah gave Bayat Ali Zubair ibn Awwamin gave Bayat Ali Aisha all of them are now going towards where when they went there Ali ibn Abi Talib was told that Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair ibn Awam have left and they are in Kufa. He took an army to them.

When he took the army, Ali ibn Abi Talib to Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair ibn Awam and Aisha radiallahu ta'ala anha, before the fight started, Ali ibn Abi Talib sent Miqdad. To talk to Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zuwayrah ibn Awam and ask them why they've come here and what's the situation. Alaa kullin when they spoke to Aisha and Talha ibn Ubaidillah and Zuwayrah ibn Awam they said we want the people who killed Uthman, that's all we want, nothing more, nothing less. We are on the view of Uthman and Muawiyah.

Maqdad said Ali is not refusing to bring them, he's ready, he's willing to bring them, but... Not now. Let him get everything controlled. He wants to bring them? That's what Zubair ibn Awwama al-Talha and Aisha said.

He said, yes, they do want to bring them. He said, okay, that's good. Then why are we on different sides? Allah brought what?

Peace between them. Nothing happened? Lakin there were people who wanted fitna.

So they said, huh? The two armies, they what? Spoke and they agreed on something? They said, no, that's not right. So what did they do?

Abdullah ibn Sabah, the Yahudian, followers like that, they sent an army to Aisha and Zubayrullah, people to start a fight with them, and Ali ibn Abi Talib, somebody to start a fight with, in the morning. And that's what happened. Each party thought what? That the other party was lying to them last night.

They deceived us. The fight happened between who? Well, Al-Asaf Al-Shadeed, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, and Talha Ibn Ubaidillah and Aisha. This was called what, Maarakat?

Aisha was on her camel, she fell off her camel, and Talha Ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair Ibn Awan both were killed in that fight. Ali cried. He came into the army, he saw Talha and Zubair ibn Awam in the middle of the mist, their faces in the ground, between rocks. He saw them, he cried.

Because this is what Ali wanted. This is what he put forward. No.

Like as Shaykh Al-Sami Ibn Taymiyyah said, If the fitna takes place, brothers, the ulama, the people of knowledge and uqala cannot stop it. Once it happens, no one can stop it. Once it happens, it takes place. When Zubair ibn Awam ibn Talha ibn Ubedillah died, Ali got very angry. Ali, what did he do?

He told... He told Abdullah ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Zubair. Zubair ibn Awam's son, Abdullah ibn Zubair. Remember, it's his auntie.

Because Abdullah ibn Zubair, Abdullah ibn Zubair was married to who? Asma'ibn Abi Bakr. Abdullah ibn Zubair's mother was who?

Asma'ibn Abi Bakr. So Abdullah ibn Zubair, his auntie, his auntie, maternal auntie from his mother's side is who? Aisha.

The Prophet took, sorry, Ali took Abdullah ibn Zubair and Abdullah ibn Umar and he said, both of you take her to Medina. Take her home safely to Medina. Aisha cried until she went to Medina and it was said that she never left her house in Medina. She stayed there until she died. Whenever she remembered that issue that took place, her tears would fill her khimar.

Abdullah ibn Zubair when he took her back Abdullah ibn Umar She said to Abdullah ibn Umar Why didn't you stop me when you saw me What I was doing Why didn't you tell me what I was doing was wrong And then he said I saw two men Meaning referring to Zubair ibn Awam and Talha ibn Ubaidillah Especially Zubair ibn Awam Two men who were Talking to you, convincing you so much to come. So she regretted it, Aisha radiallahu anhu. And the Prophet already said it before, that there's going to happen a... something's going to occur between who? Aisha and Ali.

And what did the Prophet say to her? If it happens, fa ahsin ilayha, be nice to her. Care for her. And the Prophet referred to Ali as the right one that day. The Prophet said when it happens, and then he said, Ali ibn Abi Talib said, I am the wrong one that day.

And I am the worst one of the two, if that happens. He said, no. The Prophet said, no.

But take her to where her place is. Send her back. And he did that. What did he do?

He sent her back to Medina. Aisha stayed in Medina. Ali got angry of what happened. He said Mu'awiyah has to give me bayah.

This is wrong. Everyone who doesn't want to do, doesn't want to fall under Imara, no. It's Jubea.

He took an army and Ali waged a fight against who? Muawiyah. This is the second battle.

What is it called? Siffin. When it fought, fought, fought, Abdul Amr ibn al-Assad, what did he say? Abdul Amr ibn al-Assad said, he said, Another Riwayah he said Arsal al-Mushaf send a Mushaf to who?

to Ali I know who Ali is Ali is a man, Ali is an individual if you give him the Mushaf and you say I want meaning you to be judged between the book of Allah Ali will never say no send this book so the Quran was then sent to who? Ali and it was read on him the letter that Muawiyah wrote and that they want Allah's book to be judged this is called Qadiyatul Tahkeem Ali, when the letter, the kitab was sent to him, رضي الله تعالى عنه, an ayah was recited to him, أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يُدْعُونَ إِلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّى فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكِ Those who, the zubda of the ayah is, those who've been told to come to the book of Allah, and then some of them will turn away and not go for the book, the Quran, when they're told to judge by the book of Allah. Ali ibn Abi Talib said, I am the one who's...

who is more befitting for the Book of Allah to be the judge. I'm ready. I am the one who the Book of Allah is going to be the judge. This is where the Khawarij is going to come out. Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muawiyah came to a what?

came to agreement. Who was the representative of Muawiyah and who was the representative of Ali? Who was the representative of Ali?

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. Who was the representative of Ali and Muawiyah? Amr ibn al-Asr. What did they agree on? They are riwayat which are mawdu'a, da'eefa, munkara.

Ibn al-Makhlaf, he's a riwayat, batil, mawdu'a. No one should rely on that riwayah in regards to the issue that took place between the companions. Abadan. And when I talked about the Uthman ibn Affan's life and Ali ibn Abi Talib, I explained it very well over there.

So, what was the agreement that happened between them two? Amr ibn al-As and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, what they agreed upon, which is the riwayah, which Ibn Abi As narrated, which is the narration, which is sahih. Is that Amr ibn al-'As and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari spoke?

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari said to Amr ibn al-'As, Ali was a man who the Prophet was pleased with him from the Muhajirin. He talked about the virtue of Ali. He said, leave his position for him. Amr ibn al-As said, okay, what about me and Muawiyah? Where do we come into the equation?

He said, If Ali wants to use you guys, then help him in what he asks you to do. But if he doesn't want you, If he doesn't need you, doesn't use you, how long has Allah not required you or Muawiyah? Meaning Allah doesn't require you, then Ali doesn't need you, doesn't need you. Amr Mu'assir, okay. And he left.

This was the agreement. When this happened, and this agreement got met, Ali, when he came back home, to Kufa, remember now, Ali moved away from where? The Khilafah, where did he take it from? He brought it, he left Medina now, the Khilafah is not in Medina anymore.

Where is it? It's in Kufa. When Ali came back, The Khawarij were angry.

Why were they angry? They said, Kaif, how did you and Muawiyah both reach a conclusion? Kaif, what's the problem?

Hakamta al-rijal. You judged by men. Wa lam tahkum bima anzal Allah.

And you did not judge by that which Allah sent down. Your judge were men. Meaning Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and?

You didn't go for the book of Allah. And they cut off from the Muslimin, and they left Kufa, and where did they go? A neighboring place which was known as Harura. They stayed there. Ali went to them.

Ali, radiallahu ta'ala antu, went to them. Here's where the story of the Khawarij starts, inshallah. We're going to take that, bi-dhni Allah al-kareem.

Ali ibn Abi Talib came back to Kufa. When he came back to Kufa, the Khawarij were not pleased with what he did. What they wanted was what?

They saw Muawiyah to be an enemy of Allah and Ali should have finished him. This is what they wanted. And the whole city of Kufa they started to use, they started to say That's what they were saying.

Ali ibn Abi Talib said to them It's a word which is right, but the intent behind it is false. And Ali was doing a khutbah. Ali went to them He convinced them when they went to Harura first.

He went to them, he spoke to them, he discussed everything with them, and they took it from him. They came back to Kufa. When they came back to Kufa, Ali ibn Abi Talib was in Kufa.

Things felt like it was going down. The situation was calming down. Ash'ath ibn Qais came to Ali ibn Abi Talib and Ash'ath ibn Qais was very close to Ali.

He used to enter upon Ali. He entered upon Ali one day and he said, Ali, I heard you had an agreement with the Khawarij. Not the Khawarij yet. The people of Harura.

You had what? You had an agreement with them. And he said, na'am, we agreed.

I brought them back to Kufa. He said to them, did you agree to take your shahad again? Because you were murtad and you took a shahada again. That's what they said. You left Islam and you took Islam again.

Ali said, no. He said, that's what the city of Kufa is talking about. That you left the religion of Islam and you came back to the religion of Allah because hakimta al-rijal. You didn't judge by Allah's Book, you were kafir.

So now you became a Muslim again. Ali said, no. He said, today's khutbah, the khutbah I'm going to talk about it. When he came into the khutbah, Ali ibn Abi Talib was giving the khutbah.

and he refuted them he spoke about what the reality of the issue was and what took place he mentioned it when he mentioned it they started to shout from inside the masjid لا حكم إلا لله لا حكم إلا لله the hukm is is for Allah alone. They started shouting, screaming in the masjid. Ali looked at them, he said, kalimah to haqq. Wallahi, this is a kalimah which is haqq.

Ureeda biha batil. The intent behind it and what they want from it. It is batil. It is what? It is batil.

Then as Ali was saying that, one man from beneath his feet stood up, underneath him from the pulpit. And he said to him, Muhammad, we revealed upon you, صلى الله عليه وسلم, وَلَقَدْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَىٰ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَإِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ If you do shirk, لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ That your actions will nullify And you're going to be from those who are lost Destroyed So he's trying to say You did shirk And your actions got nullified And you are destroyed Ali ibn Abi Talib he looked at them and he said Allah's order is what we await for you. Insha'Allah Allah is going to judge between us. And Ali left the pulpit and he left.

Ali ibn Abi Talib, his story... I'm going to mention here, by the will of Allah, Ubaidullah ibn Uyad ibn Amr al-Qari, he said, He said, Abdullah ibn Al-Shaddad, he entered upon Aisha, and we were sitting next to her. This was when he came back from Iraq, the days that Ali was fighting with the Khawarij. So I said to Aisha, O Abdullah ibn al-Shaddad, are you truthful about what I ask you about? Will you tell me the truth about that which I'm going to ask you?

Will you tell me about those people who were killed by Ali? Because Aisha wasn't there. Are you going to tell me about those people that Ali ibn al-Talib fought against?

He said, I don't believe you. Why is it that I won't tell you the truth? Of course I'll tell you the truth. Qala fahadithni an kisatihim Okay, tell me their story.

Qala he said, now he's going to tell the story of what happened between Ali and this is the last story we're going to take and then we're going to go into the characteristics biiznillah al-kareem. Qala he said, fa inna aliyan lamma kataman mu'awiyah When Ali and Mu'awiyah they wrote something together, they wrote a contract between themselves. Wa hakama al-hakamani, they took the two judges, kharaja alayhi thamaniyatu alafi bin qurra'in nas. 8,000 from the reciters of the Quran, Qurra'They went فَنَزَلُوا بِأَرْضٍ Meaning they left, they cut off from Ali's army And they left Ali And they went to where?

They went to a place called Harura That's where they stayed On the side of Kufa Then they started to scold and rebuke Ali ibn Abi Talib and his actions وَقَالُوا they said إِن سَلَخْتَ مِن قَمِيسٍ أَلْبَسَكَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى They said you took a garment Meaning the leadership Allah gave you, you left it And yesterday, what did they want from Uthman? To leave his position And Ali now they say what? You want, you left it, you left it They will see why, what they meant by it Wasmun sammak Allah ta'ala A name, a leadership Allah gave you the title Amir al-Muminin and you left it Thumman talaqta and then after that you went Fahakamta fi deenillahi rijal and then after that you went and you made men your rule Wala hukm Wala hukm illa lillah and hukm and judging is for no one except who? Allah When they were saying in Harura came to Kufa and Ali heard all of this, this is what Ali did.

He requested a caller to call. A caller called and he said no one should enter upon Ali except a person who memorized the Quran. I mean who knows the Quran? Ali radiallahu ta'ala, what did he do?

When the house got filled up and everyone was in it, the Qurra, all of them, Ali requested for a mushaf. Ali placed a mushaf in front of him. He started to point his finger and hit the mushaf with his hand. in front of him Ali was talking to the Mus'haf and the word Mus'haf, ikhwani, is مثلث you can say Mis'haf, Mas'haf, Mus'haf أَيُّهَا الْمُصْحَفِ O you Mus'haf حَدِّثِ النَّاسَ Talk to the people Inform the people What do you want from the Mus'haf?

Ali ibn Abi Talib said to the Mus'haf, talk, inform the people, tell the people. Then they called and they said, Ya Amin al-Mu'mineen, what do you want from the Mus'haf? It is nothing except papers on ink.

It's nothing else. And we are the ones that narrate from it. So what do you want? Qala he then said, Ashabukum ha'ulain ladhina kharajoo The friends here who left, who cut off Bayni wa baynahum kitabullah Meaning he's referring to who?

Muawiyah Between me and Muawiyah is the book of Allah And they said that you do not judge by the book of Allah, right? Ali is trying to tell them that I did He said what is between me and Ali is the book of Allah But Fi kitabillahi The Book of Allah is between us. And inshaAllah later I'm going to bring the Qawla of Imam Al-Shaqib, regarding this matter, when I speak about the Sifat of the Khawarij.

Ali ibn Abi Talib, what did he say? The Book of Allah is what's between us, but it needs somebody to interpret it. The way you all said right now, when I pointed it at it, you all said we inform what's in it.

He said, Naam. The hukum is the book of Allah. But the book of Allah needs tahkim. Somebody to judge it.

Somebody to extract it. That's what he needs. And then he gave them an example.

And this is to show you the jahl. And having no understanding of the religion of Allah, the khawarij, hadith, has the characteristics. He said, Allah said in a man and a woman who are married, and there's khilaf that happens between them.

Look what he said. A man and a woman have a dispute. The man doesn't understand the woman. The man doesn't understand her. Khilaf happens.

How can the khilaf be resolved? A person who comes from the man's side and a person who comes from the woman's side and they talk about the matter. And the solution is brought like that.

Sahih? So they're judging it from the Book of Allah, but then who is the Tahaqeem, the ruling happening from? Two people.

The nation of Muhammad is more honorable than a man and a woman. The blood of the Muslims and their dignity is more important because what happened between Mu'awi and Ali? Blood got saved. Nobody... This is a matter of people.

And when Musa al-Ash'ari coming, brought solution, blood should not spill. Allah is talking about a woman and a what? And also Allah said in Surah Ma'idah, And Ali ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Abbas is going to use that as a istishad later.

Regarding if a person... Hunt a rabbit Whilst he's doing what? Hajj Later he has to give what he hunted Is that correct? In return Who is going to determine that it was what he hunted? Two judges Two judges This is a rabbit Rabbit So what do you think about the Muslims and their blood?

It's more rightful So he answered that Now he has to answer him stripping his name off, sahb. And you also rebuke me for writing and making a solution between me and who? Me and who? Muawiyah.

Kuffar of Quraysh, they sent who? Suheil ibn Amr. Before Suhail they sent who?

Urwa Ibn Mas'ud Al-Thakafi Urwa came first, the Sahabis didn't agree with him There was no, nothing came, he left The second person they sent was who? Suhail Ibn Amr Suhail Ibn Amr, when the Prophet ﷺ was writing the letter The Prophet ﷺ wrote Bismillahirrahmanirrahim I will be talking about I'll be to the Khawarij, by the will of Allah, the Generous.
