if you have a Canon camera like this one then stick around because I've got some great tips to share that will help you get more from your digital camera so you can take better photos welcome to the photo genius Channel hi Paul here from photogenius Welcome to my channel where I share regular photography tutorials all designed to help you get more from your digital camera so you can take better photos if you are new to this Channel please consider subscribing now in this video I'm using the Canon 1500d which is also known as the t7 2000d and even the kiss X9 depending on which part of the world you may live but if you've got a different camera like the Canon t7 T8 200d in fact any recent Canon DSLR camera then please stick around because I'm pretty sure these tips will also apply to you and your camera as well now this week's video is actually inspired by a question that I was asked on one of my recent photography workshops here in Brisbane now the gentleman in mind was using his Canon camera on a tripod and he was using the live view function as opposed to looking through the viewfinder and he couldn't change the camera's ISO but actually you can you just need to know how to set this up so in this video I'm going to show you how to do it and I'm going to throw in a few other live view tips as well for good measure so I hope you'll stick around and enjoy the video so we're not using live view if you want to change features like the focus mode white balance the drive mode or the iso you can use the four buttons that surround the set button and all you've got to do is press the button and change the setting press set easy but when you're in the Live View mode these same four buttons now are used to move the focus around so how do you change these options without having to leave live view well this is pretty straightforward all you need to do is press the Q button and you will find that you can change the focus modes the drive mode or the white balance easily by selecting the symbol pressing the set button and then making the change as required but what about ISO because ISO is missing well all I've got to do is press the flash button on the top of the camera and I can change ISO without having to leave live view now without this function turned on I would have to leave live view press the iso button to change the ISO so let me show you how I set this up so to set this up is pretty easy you just press the menu button look for the tools options at the top here the tool menu number three go down to custom functions press set and then look for flash button functions now you'll see that this one is highlighted ISO speed and this means that if I press the flash button I can change the iso by default it was set to raise built-in flash so if I set that back you'll see now the button raises the Flash now I rarely use the flash on this camera so I'm going to set it back to ISO speed and this means now any press of the button on the top of the camera allows me to change the iso and this includes being in the Live View mode so now we know how to change the iso when using the live view function but what about the shutter speed and the aperture well the shutter speed is easy because there's a control dial on the top of the camera as you turn this the shutter speed will change I'm slowing the shutter down and you will see the screen is getting brighter if I increase the shutter speed by dialing to the right I choose a faster shutter speed this lets less light into the camera and as you can see the screen is getting darker now as well as the screen giving us an indication of how the exposure will come out we also have the camera's light meter and we'll come to that in just a moment but what about aperture well if you want to change aperture all you need to do is hold down the AV button which stands for aperture value and holding it down you turn the dial on the top of the camera and you're now changing the aperture bigger number means a smaller aperture and less light through the lens a smaller number means a larger aperture and more light can pass through the lens so what about the light meter well half press of the shutter button will wake up the light meter and all you've got to do is change the shutter speed or aperture to get the marker in the middle for what is generally regarded as a balanced exposure now I would like to mention that a balanced exposure according to the camera may be different to what I consider is The Perfect Exposure and of course your opinion may be completely different again it's completely subjective so what I recommend is to experiment and don't be afraid to slightly overexpose or slightly underexposed to get the shot that you want now I have made a separate video all about this that goes a bit deeper it also looks into a really good camera function called bracketing if you want to find out more you'll find a link at the end of the video now let's talk more about focusing Now when using live view this white box represents where the camera will focus and you can move this easily to the right up down and left using the buttons on the back of the camera now one of the drawbacks of using live view is the focus can be quite slow so if I press and hold the button you will see that there is a delay of a few seconds before the camera can focus you know when the camera's focused because the white square or rectangle will turn green now because the focus can be a bit sluggish this isn't really for sports and Wildlife for moving subjects but great for Landscapes and architecture as an alternative to using autofocus you could give manual focus a go now to do this it's pretty straightforward first you need to turn auto focus off and you can do that using the tiny switch on the side of the lens then you either use the screen and the live view function or you look through the viewfinder and you adjust the focus until the subject is sharp now don't mix up the zoom with the focus because they're two very different things manually focus in a lens is very popular with macro photographers and a few months ago I made a macro video so if you're interested in checking that out just use the length that should pop up here in just a sec okay that's about it I hope you enjoyed this week's video and if you did please consider giving it a thumbs up
